P.M. Blog: Day One

July 25th, 2008 - 6:37pm by Jake GrilleyOther posts by

The Broncos closed out day one of training camp with an afternoon jog through practice. Head Coach Mike Shanahan has decided against holding two-a-day practices and risking injury to his 80-man roster. Instead the team’s afternoon practices will be mostly geared toward seeing plays and getting mental reps rather than full speed football drills.

Some afternoon practices during camp will be these types of jog throughs and others exclusively scheduled for special teams.

The wind picked up and a few raindrops could be felt outside at the team’s practice facility as afternoon practice got underway. With a few small storm clouds in the distance the Broncos broke into offense and defense with each grouping on seperate fields.

Broncos-Lions: Pregame Notes

November 4th, 2007 - 10:06am by AndrewOther posts by

The Broncos will have to make do without safety John Lynch.

After being limited in practice on Thursday and Friday as he recovered from the pinched nerve he incurred against Green Bay last Monday, Lynch was one of the eight players scratched for today’s game against the Detroit Lions.

Joining Lynch on the sidelines will be fullback/running back Mike Bell, safety Curome Cox, defensive tackle Amon Gordon, guard Isaac Snell, tight end Chad Mustard, wide receiver Javon Walker and defensive end Jarvis Moss, whose season ended last Thursday when he fractured his fibula and tore ankle ligaments in practice. However, he has not yet been moved to injured reserve.

Hamza Abdullah, meanwhile, will make his return to the lineup after missing the last five games with a strained hip flexor. With Cox inactive, Abdullah is one of three pure safeties active for the game, joining Nick Ferguson and Steve Cargile. Cornerback Domonique Foxworth, however, is expected to see substantial action back at safety, as he did last week following Lynch’s injury and back in December 2006 when Ferguson was lost for the season.

Detroit’s inactives players included running back Tatum Bell, whom the Lions acquired from Denver in the Dre’ Bly trade eight months ago. Joining him are cornerbacks Dovonte Edwards and Tony Beckham, guards Blaine Saipia and Manny Ramirez, defensive ends Ikaika Alama-Francis and Kalimba Edwards and quarterback Dan Orlovsky, who is in uniform per the NFL’s rules regarding third quarterbacks.

Alexander to IR; Mustard Back on Roster

October 18th, 2007 - 2:56pm by AndrewOther posts by

It has been a little over a month since Chad Mustard bounced back and forth between the Broncos’ 53-man roster and the unemployment line, as he did in each of the first two regular-season weekends — both of which saw him see action.

Now, as the leaves turn from green to autumnal shades of orange, red, gold and brown, Mustard returns to the roster, but Stephen Alexander — who was released to make room for Mustard in Week 2 — will see his season end as the Broncos moved him to injured reserve.

The Broncos announced the moves Thursday afternoon during practice.

Alexander has grappled with a calf injury that he incurred in the preseason finale against Arizona. He was limited in practice throughout the season to date — including Wednesday afternoon’s session — and had not played so far in 2007.

Mustard — who is listed as a tight end in the press release sent out regarding his signing Thursday — worked at offensive tackle in the preseason before being released Labor Day weekend and was listed as an offensive tackle when he was on the roster for the wins over Buffalo and Oakland last month.

Mustard In; Alexander Out

September 15th, 2007 - 5:54pm by AndrewOther posts by

Just like last Saturday, the Broncos re-signed offensive lineman Chad Mustard less than 24 hours before kickoff of the weekend’s game.

This time, the team did not release someone at his position to make room.

It was Stephen Alexander who lost his grip on a roster spot, as the Broncos released their primary starting tight end of the 2005 and 2006 seasons to open room for Mustard, who himself was released earlier this week in order to clear the way for the acquisition of backup linebacker Jamie Winborn.

Alexander was inactive for the Week 1 win at Buffalo, while Mustard was in uniform for the game.

OTA Day 2

Bon giorno from Dove Valley on a cloud-shrouded but nevertheless pleasant Thursday morning, one which saw the Broncos take the field for the second day of quarterback camp.

With only 10 minutes on the field, I figured I would get a good look at the quarterbacks today after watching the D-linemen go through warmup drills yesterday morning. In particular, I wanted to check out the two new quarterbacks, Darrell Hackney and Patrick Ramsey, although neither would show their full arm strength during the warmup segment of the session.

Not too much to report from the 10 minutes of open access today … aside from new kicker Brandon Pace being implored to hustle as he ran from one practice field to another in time for pre-practice stretching — although I must note that it looked to me like he was moving at a pretty brisk pace.

A few more photos follow below, and I’ll be back with more this afternoon after on-field player availability for interviews.

Mustard Set to Go; Wilson ‘50-50′

December 8th, 2006 - 5:05pm by AndrewOther posts by

Chad MustardJason Elam says he’s playing Sunday. Al Wilson says he’s “50-50,” befitting a player who is listed as questionable on the injury report for Sunday’s game, although he has made it through all three practices this week.

There is no such question for Chad Mustard; he’s listed as probable and made it through all practices this week, even though he admitted that the shoulder he injured on his second catch at Kansas City 15 days ago remains “a little sore.”

Sitting out last weekend helped — although he didn’t know he’d be scatched until Sunday.

“It was kind of a last-minute decision,” Mustard said. “You just try to go with what the coaches say, you’ve got to be ready no matter what the circumstance. I found out Sunday morning and they told me right before the game.”

But Mustard now feels it was the best decision.

“I got an extra couple of days over the weekend where I can rest it and let it heal and get it back to normal,” Mustard said. “That’s definitely an advantage.

“(The shoulder) is doing well. I’m cleared to practice and play and everything.”

Broncos-Seahawks: Pregame Notes and Inactives

December 3rd, 2006 - 5:13pm by AndrewOther posts by

The sun has gone to bed, and the teams are beginning to trickle through the tunnels at the south end of the stadium for pre-game warmups.

Two of the Broncos’ starting offensive 11 from last week will not play tonight, as both Adam Neadows and Chad Mustard were placed among the eight inactive players. George Foster will take over for Meadows at right tackle, returning to the starting lineup for the first time since Week 9.

Other news from the pre-game roster moves:

  • Tatum Bell and Mike Bell will be the Broncos’ two tailbacks, with Cecil Sapp serving as the de facto third stringer. Both Damien Nash and Cedric Cobbs were scratched from tonight’s lineup.
  • Offensive lineman Chris Kuper is active for the first time in his career.
  • Denver’s other inactives include wide receiver/kickoff returner Quincy Morgan, linebacker Nate Webster and defensive linemen Kenny Peterson and Antwon Burton.
  • Rookie tight end Tony Scheffler is back on the 45-man roster after sitting out the last three games.
  • Seattle will start Tom Ashworth for Sean Locklear at right tackle. Locklear, however, is still active.
  • The Seahawks deactivated wide reciever Bobby Engram, linebacker D.D. Lewis, offensive linemen Robbie Tobeck and Ray Willis, defensive end Robert Pollard, tight end Itula Mili and quarterbacks Gibran Hamdan and David Greene. Greene will still be in uniform, though, as their emergency No. 3 quarterback.

Back to Lake Erie: Chad Mustard

October 21st, 2006 - 4:53pm by AndrewOther posts by

Between now and game time, I’ll use this space to focus on each of the six former Browns on the 53-man roster who will return to Cleveland this Sunday.

If Chad Mustard holds any ill will towards the Browns for casting him aside two years ago, he doesn’t let it show. The way he views it, it was the Browns that gave him an opportunity to show his skills, plucking him from the Omaha Beef of the National Indoor Football League after watching a tape he sent around pro football.

“I sent a tape out to all the teams, and one of their scouts finally got through it and said, ‘Hey, this guy might be able to play,’ and gave me a chance,” Mustard recalled.
