Credit to the Blockers

October 12th, 2011 - 1:26pm by Willis McGaheeOther posts by

This week I just want to give credit to the big guys up front.

The O-line, basically they’ve been doing a great job as far as opening up holes for me, giving me lanes to run down and make plays for our team. I’m just happy to be a part of it.

As for the bye week, I usually just go home and relax, hang with the family, get away from football for a little while so I can come back and be ready for work.

That’s the same thing I’m doing this year. I’m going to head home, hang with my mom and just chill out.

Reid on ESPN First Take

October 27th, 2009 - 4:34pm by Zach EisendrathOther posts by

While many players on the Broncos spent time off during their bye week resting up or on a quick vacation, Darrell Reid spent a portion of his time away from Dove Valley in Bristol, Conn. — making his way around ESPN studios.

Reid appeared live on a variety of ESPN programming last Friday, including SportsCenter, ESPN News and the Scott Van Pelt Show.

He also appeared on ESPN First Take — sitting down with co-host Dana Jacobson to talk about Head Coach Josh McDaniels’ influence on the team’s 6-0 start and how the club has been able to jell so quickly in 2009.

Catching Their Breath

October 25th, 2009 - 10:34am by mike_riceOther posts by

The Denver Broncos can take a breath this weekend. They have bolted out to a 6-0 start and shown themselves to be one of the best teams in the NFL.

Clearly there is plenty of football left. But there is no doubt they deserve to enjoy their start.

The best part of it all is that no one who follows the team expected this. Most people thought the Broncos would struggle. Few, if any, thought they would be undefeated. That’s why they play the games.

Here are my top three reasons the Broncos are 6-0:

Resting Before The Stretch Run

October 21st, 2009 - 3:29pm by Chris GentilvisoOther posts by

For the next four days, the Broncos and football will have a chance to be separate entities.

After holding a film study on Wednesday morning, Head Coach Josh McDaniels released the players to embark on their bye-week break.

The team will have the time to rest and recuperate before resuming practice in preparation for the Ravens on Monday.

“We made some corrections today and talked about things we didn’t do very well in the game and tried to put that game behind us,” McDaniels said. “Now we’re moving on and the coaching staff’s going to do a few things here in the next few days and get ready for the next 10 weeks.”

Ready and Waiting

October 30th, 2008 - 8:08pm by Ryan TorainOther posts by

Ladies and gentlemen, the time has (possibly) come.

All I know is I’m most definitely excited to get on the field if Coach calls my name. Like I’ve been saying, I’ve got to be ready if it happens, and right now I know I will be.

Over the bye week, as you all know, I just stayed a couple extra days and conditioned, working out with Coach Tuten. I did some more rehab and studied my playbook — just did a couple of extra things to get right. Get my mind right and my body right. I did have some time to relax though, on Saturday and Sunday, then we were back in here on Monday.

I have noticed one change, though. More and more reporters are coming to my locker during open locker room. It went from having maybe one person come and talk with me to having every camera in the place all gathered around me. It’s not overwhelming or anything like that, though. I’m just answering the questions, telling them what’s going on. The question that’s been asked the most is, “Are you getting playing time?” or “Are you starting?” I can’t answer either of those. Both of those are a game time decision. I don’t know yet, so I’ve just got to stay patient, stay on my Ps and Qs and be ready for everything that could possibly be thrown my way. Then I can go out there and have some fun.

100 Percent After the Bye

October 23rd, 2008 - 9:59am by Ryan TorainOther posts by

It’s the bye week, and it couldn’t come at a better time. We’re all ready to go relax, get our minds off football and come back refreshed.

The bye is always great — it gives guys a rest, a chance to get their mind right, just to focus on the next game and get their mind right.

People are going home, seeing their families, hanging out with friends. Want to know what I’m doing?

I’m staying here. Haha.

I’m going to be conditioning, working out with Coach Tuten. But that’s pretty much been the plan since I’ve been hurt, just try to get back to 100 percent so I’ll be able to help the team when my number’s called. So it’s all good.

Back from the Bye

October 15th, 2007 - 3:39am by AndrewOther posts by

Notes as I begin sifting through the comments posted since my last entry … many of which I will reply to within the following 48 hours …

I can only hope that everyone else in Broncoland returning from near and far has more energy than I do, that the players and coaches who scattered about were able to get more rest than I could, and that no one is dealing with an injury that is as painful as this right elbow that flares and throbs with each letter I type.

Whether I managed to find much time for sleep amidst darting from one family function to another — all following a one-hour night of sleep that began the weekend last Thursday — won’t make a whit of difference for the Broncos as they reconvene Monday for practice, just as they have following other bye weekends in recent years.

But for the players and coaches, the potential benefits of the time away won’t be fully known until we see them in action Sunday night against Pittsburgh, when they look to snap a three-game skid and find their old form after going 4-8 in their last 12 games, including a 2-5 home record in that span.

“By no means is this thing over,” safety John Lynch said before the bye weekend. “It’s just we’ve got to come together — coaches, players, everyone — and get the thing right. Start doing things in the right way and making plays.

“I think we all believe we have the talent in this locker room. I think what’s become apparent, talent alone doesn’t win you games, you’ve got to execute and all those things, and I think we will when we come back.”

Some quick bye-week stats of note to mention as the Broncos begin gathering once again:

Denver is 14-4 following its bye week, which is the second-best post-bye record in the league. It was tied for the best with the Philadelphia Eagles and Minnesota Vikings, but both moved to 15-4 in that scenario Sunday with wins over the New York Jets and Chicago Bears, respectively …

… Head Coach Mike Shanahan’s post-bye record is 9-3, and his teams have won four such contests in succession, the most recent being a 13-3 Monday Night Football triumph over the Baltimore Ravens last October …

… The Broncos’ post-bye home record is 10-2.

Of course, numbers and references to the past are but a guideline; it is the present collection of Broncos — which, because of injuries last week, is down both Tom Nalen and Nate Jackson — who will have to try to uphold those trends.

More to come later today as the Broncos return to Dove Valley, return to practice and look to set their course right after a three-game losing streak leading into the one-week respite. Until then, I need to get some sleep myself, so vaya con Dios.

Time For A Break

Sometimes you have to get away from it all. It certainly couldn’t hurt the Broncos after Sunday’s loss to the Chargers.

I couldn’t believe what I was watching. That game was so out of character for this team and organization. I was left not knowing exactly what to think.

As far as the football goes, the same trouble areas cropped up again. The run defense just wasn’t there and special teams had another rough day. Those areas need to get fixed; that’s not saying anything beyond the obvious.

On top of that, the offense did virtually nothing, too. Here’s an understatement: It wasn’t a good day at the office for the Broncos.

Bye-Week Flashback: Part 3

October 1st, 2006 - 9:37pm by AndrewOther posts by

Our year-by-year look at the Broncos after the bye concludes with an examination of the 2000-05 seasons, when the Broncos won five of six after the week off.

2000:

  • Bye Week: 9
  • Record Going In: 4-4
  • Immediately After Bye: W, 30-23 at New York Jets.
  • Notes: The week before the bye, Corey Dillon sliced through the Broncos’ defense for a then-NFL single-game rushing record. Denver proceeded to win six consecutive games upon its return.

Bye Week Flashback: Part 2

September 29th, 2006 - 3:29pm by AndrewOther posts by

Greetings from the heart of the Tar Heel State, where I’ve temporarily decamped for a weekend not of R&R, but of time with both the extended and immediate family.

Anyhow, our year-by-year look at the Broncos after the bye continues with an examination of the 1995-1999 seasons, when the Broncos won four of five after the week off.

1995:

  • Bye Week: 9
  • Record Going In: 4-4
  • Immediately After Bye: W, 38-6 over Arizona Cardinals.
  • Notes: Triumph over Arizona was first week of 3-2 stretch, but Broncos closed the season as they began for an 8-8 finish, a one-game improvement over the previous year.
