Challenging the Champs

This Sunday, Denver will travel to Green Bay to tussle with the defending Super Bowl champions in the Green Bay Packers. Green Bay edged out Pittsburgh 31-25 in Super Bowl XLV, played this past February in Dallas.

The upcoming matchup will be mark the 26th time in team history that the Broncos will play the previous season’s Super Bowl champion.

In Denver’s previous 25 matchups against defending Super Bowl champions, the club has recorded a 15-10 (.600) overall record.

400th Win Target of Broncos

The next regular season win for the Denver Broncos will be the team’s 400th in its history.

That is a lot of wins for a team that started off its existence at the bottom of the rag bag of the American Football League.

This week’s opponents, the Tennessee Titans, began life and play as the Houston Oilers, and the other six original AFL teams were the Boston (now New England) Patriots, Buffalo Bills, New York Titans (now Jets), Los Angeles (now San Diego) Chargers, Dallas Texans (now the Kansas City Chiefs), and the Oakland Raiders.

Draft Memories: Elway

With the draft now right around the corner, I thought it might be fun to revisit some of the greatest draft moments in Denver Broncos history.

Where else would one start besides the acquisition of John Elway. I know, I know, he was acquired by trade, but that’s just the end of the story, not the beginning.

The beginning came in San Diego on Sunday, November 28, 1982, while John was still a senior at Stanford. We were staying at the Town and Country Hotel in San Diego for a game against the Chargers, and Broncos owner Edgar Kaiser and general manager Hein Poulus called me into Mr. Kaiser’s suite. I didn’t know the topic, but left very excited.
