Colquitt Razor Sharp, On and Off the Field

December 5th, 2011 - 4:26pm by Kenny LeganOther posts by

Punters don’t normally get a lot of recognition, but Broncos punter Britton Colquitt has earned it with his helmet on and off.

When it’s on, Colquitt is dropping punts on dimes deep in opposing territory. Sunday, he constantly forced the Vikings to drive the length of the field against a stout Broncos defense. On Colquitt’s six punts, the Vikings had an average starting field position of their own 14.5-yard line.

“That was really big with field position all game long,” Head Coach John Fox said after Sunday’s game. “Our coverage teams did a good job.”

When his helmet is off, Colquitt has shown he’s in postseason form with his various forms of facial hair. He went with sideburns transitioning into a handlebar mustache on Sunday. But he wasn’t alone as he was joined by teammates Eric Decker, Adam Weber and Matt Prater as they all found something fitting for Minnesota.

Notebook: Five Broncos Popular for Pro Bowl

December 1st, 2011 - 4:45pm by Gray CaldwellOther posts by

With a little less than three weeks remaining in Pro Bowl fan voting, Broncos fans are making their voices heard.

Five Broncos are among the top five vote-getters at their respective positions in the AFC — cornerback Champ Bailey, punter Britton Colquitt, safety Brian Dawkins, linebacker Von Miller and quarterback Tim Tebow.

Four of those five players were among the top five in mid-November, and Bailey has since joined that list.

It would mark the first Pro Bowl selection for Colquitt, Miller and Tebow, the ninth trip for Dawkins and the 11th for Bailey.

Voting is still open, and will end on Dec. 19 at the conclusion of the Monday Night Football matchup between the Steelers and 49ers.

The teams will be announced at 5 p.m. MST on a special NFL Total Access 2012 Pro Bowl Selection Show on NFL Network.

The game will be played on Sunday, Jan. 29, 2012.

Fresh for San Diego

November 21st, 2011 - 2:45pm by Max HensonOther posts by

Leading up to their Thursday Night Football matchup with the Jets, the Broncos were tight on time with an accelerated schedule.

But a short week is followed up by long one and Denver has enjoyed extended time to rest and prepare for Week 12 in San Diego.

“The fact that we gave them a weekend off both Saturday and Sunday — guys are freshened up,” Head Coach John Fox said. “We conditioned today. We’ll lift today, get a good lift in, and just kind of get an opportunity to refresh and get it back going. We pretty much just went through some things, some tweaks, some ideas we had. It gave us an opportunity to go Broncos-on-Broncos, training camp-type of practice.”

Family Affair

November 13th, 2011 - 10:28am by Stuart ZaasOther posts by

Special teamers are often among the first players on the field for pregame warmups and today was no different. Usually the kickers and long snappers test out the turf and start their pregame routine several hours before kickoff.

Being a tight-knit group, most special teamers know their specialist colleagues around the league and take time to greet one another during pregame warmups. Broncos punter Britton Colquitt knows his Chiefs counterpart extremely well, being that the two are brothers.

Britton and Dustin Colquitt are the first brothers to punt in the NFL at the same time since 1941 (George and Wes McAfee). The Colquitt family has produced four NFL punters, including Britton and Dustin’s father, Craig, and uncle, Jimmy. All four Colquitts attended the University of Tennessee.

This season, Britton is one of two NFL players to rank in the Top 3 in both gross and net punting average. Through eight games, Britton Colquitt has averaged 49.8 yards per punt (43.1 net). Dustin Colquitt has averaged 46.7 yards per punt (41.3 net).

Colquitt Caps Historic Month

October 31st, 2011 - 12:51pm by Stuart ZaasOther posts by

Broncos punter Britton Colquitt maintained his Pro Bowl-caliber start to the season with a record-setting month of October. The third-year punter led the NFL with a 50.3-yard gross average and ranked third with a 43.5 net average on 24 punts in October.

“Anytime you’re out on the field, the more you’re out there, the more your confidence is going to build and just try to get as consistent as possible,” Colquitt said. “It’s one of those positions, where if you hit bad punts, your confidence is going to go down. As you keep hitting them well, your confidence is going to go up.

Colquitt joins Shane Lechler (Oct. and Nov, ’09) and Craig Hentrich (Nov., ’98) as the only punters in league history to gross more than 50 yards per punt and net more than 43 yards per punt in a month (min. 20 att.).

He turned in three of the 15 highest single-game net punting averages in team history this past month (min. 6 punts). Against the Lions, Colquitt’s 46.1 net punting average ranked second in franchise annals (min. 7 punts). He finished with a 42.8 net average on Oct. 9 vs. San Diego and a 41.4 net average on Oct. 23 at Miami.

Special Start for Special Teams

October 15th, 2011 - 9:57am by Stuart ZaasOther posts by

One of the bright spots through the Broncos’ first five games has been the play of the team’s special teams units.

In his first season as the Broncos’ special teams coordinator, Jeff Rodgers has the league’s top-ranked punt return unit along with the No. 2-ranked net punting average entering the Broncos’ bye week.

“We’re not trying to put a bunch of emphasis on stats,” Rodgers said. “But net punts are an important indicator of how we’re doing field position-wise with returning the ball to the defense and vice-versa with opponent net.”

Kickin’ it with Colquitt

October 13th, 2011 - 8:48am by Stuart ZaasOther posts by

Broncos punter Britton Colquitt has started strong this season through five games, building off his hot preseason.

After leading all NFL punters in net punting average this preseason, Colquitt currently ranks No. 2 with an average of 43.7 net yards per punt.

“Net punts are an important indicator of how we’re doing field position wise with returning the ball to the defense,” Special Teams Coordinator Jeff Rodgers said. “Britton will be the first one to tell you that unless he’s got guys covering well, it’s not going to help him statistically…He’s done a good job, but the guys around him have done a pretty decent job too.”

While other position groups may have been affected by the shortened offseason, kickers and punters work more as individuals and did not have their normal training routines impacted as much as offensive or defensive units.

Sky’s the Limit for Colquitt

September 21st, 2011 - 4:57pm by Stuart ZaasOther posts by

Broncos punter Britton Colquitt nearly turned in a historical outing on Sunday, finishing with an impressive stat line: six punts for a gross average of 55.8 yards and a net of 51.0 yards. Both his gross and net averages led the league’s punters in Week 2.

The 51-yard net average is the fourth highest single-game net average in NFL history by a player with at least six punts in a game, and the 55.8-yard single-game gross average ties for tenth all-time (min. 6 punts).

Had it not been for an unsportsmanlike conduct penalty called against the Broncos that negated an 82-yard punt in the fourth quarter, Colquitt’s gross average would have been 60.0 and his net would have improved to 58.5 yards.

The 60.0-yard gross punting average would represent the highest for a single game in NFL history and the 58.5-yard net average would rank second in league annals.

Kicking in the Elements

December 17th, 2010 - 2:24pm by Gray CaldwellOther posts by

It’s wet in Oakland.

It’s raining today, and there’s at least a 60 percent chance of rain on each of the next five days — including a 70 percent chance of precipitation on Sunday.

In other words, as Justin Bannan put it, “it might be a mud bath out there” as the Broncos take on the Raiders at Oakland-Alameda County Coliseum.

“We have talked about the weather,” Interim Head Coach Eric Studesville said, noting that the team hasn’t spent much time dwelling on it. “At this point in time, we have not adjusted any of our game plan for that — although we do have things in the game plan that would be good for this kind of weather that we are anticipating.”

One player in particular who has an eye on the weather is kicker Steven Hauschka, who will play in his second game as a Bronco with Matt Prater officially listed as out for Sunday’s game.
