Reunions Set For Sunday

COLLEGE TEAMMATES TO REUNITE ON SUNDAY

Brandon Stokley and Panthers quarterback Jake Delhomme were college teammates at Southwestern Louisiana from 1995-96. Fast forward 12 years and both are 10-year NFL veterans.

“I never would have though either one of us would have lasted this long,” Stokley said. “It is pretty special. I think both of us feel we are pretty blessed to have this opportunity to keep playing.”

The two former teammates keep in touch and keep tabs on one another.

“I do keep a pretty keen eye on Denver — I want to see what they do, I want to see what Brandon does week-in, week-out,” Delhomme said.

Stokley said that coming from a smaller school and having the mindset that they had to prove themselves is part of the reason both players have had such long and successful NFL careers.

“You can’t ever take anything for granted,” he said. “You have to work a little bit harder than everybody else.”

Off Early for the Holiday

November 27th, 2008 - 4:01pm by Adam ZinserOther posts by Adam Zinser

The Broncos held an early 10:20 a.m. - 12:15 p.m. practice at Dove Valley so players could get home to spend Thanksgiving with family, and by all accounts, everyone was in high spirits, laughing and joking around in the locker room before heading their separate ways.

But we were able to chat with a couple players before they headed out, so here are some quick hits from the day’s events.

DINNER WITH IRVIN

A few days before Thanksgiving, Brandon Marshall had dinner with a Hall of Famer — former Cowboys wide receiver Michael Irvin.

“It was right after the Oakland game,” Marshall said. “I sat down with Michael Irvin after the game for dinner, and he put a lot of things into perspective for me.”

When you’re an up and coming young wide receiver in the NFL, seeking out a knowledgeable veteran who has been there and done that can only help.

“I think we all know what type of guy he is and the things he has been through,” Marshall said. “All I did was shut my mouth and listen a lot. He told me to surround myself with good people, to do the right things and continue to do what I am doing. I feel good with the direction I am heading as a person and I am thankful. It is Thanksgiving and I have a lot to be thankful for including the season, the organization, the NFL giving me another chance and the fans giving me another chance.”

Improving Upon Inconsistencies

November 24th, 2008 - 5:29pm by Jake GrilleyOther posts by Jake Grilley

The Broncos locker room was fairly quiet on Monday.

Although the day marked the start of a new week, this weekend marks a tough road contest at New York against the Jets, the team was still trying to gather itself after Sunday’s disappointing 31-10 home loss to the Oakland Raiders.

In his post-game interview Ebenezer Ekuban called the flow of the team’s contest against the Raiders “a little bizarre.”

“But there are ebbs and flows about every game,” Ekuban admitted. “You just have to take it as-is.”

Stepping Up and Filling In

November 17th, 2008 - 5:47pm by Jake GrilleyOther posts by Jake Grilley

With the Broncos recent injury woes the team has had to rely on first-year players and free agent acquisitions to step in and contribute. Both the rookies and the free agents have ran with their opportunities.

A CLASS ABOVE

The members of Broncos 2008 draft class knew that they were talented — they just didn’t think the team would be utilizing their talents so soon.

Spencer Larsen for one thought he would have to cut his teeth on special teams and that eventually down the road his chance would come. But the heart and drive demonstrated by Larsen and his peers coupled with the recent wave of injuries has been enough for the Broncos coaching staff to give the rookies a shot at serious minutes. They have responded by playing key roles at various times during the season.

Brandon Stokley said the rookies have been thrown into the fire and have held up well.

“It is hard to do for a young guy coming straight out of college (to adjust to) 16 games,” he said. “Usually they are winding down right about now and we are just getting cranked up. It is hard, but that is the business that we are in so they have had to grow up quick.”

The Status of a Champ

November 14th, 2008 - 3:29pm by Adam ZinserOther posts by Adam Zinser

The first snow at Dove Valley forced the Broncos into the South Suburban Sports Dome for today’s practice. And the players were in a light mood, cracking jokes left and right — after all, since they won last week they didn’t have to wear helmets at practice.

#24 UPDATE

Though he didn’t speak with the media today, Champ Bailey was definitely the player everyone had their eyes on.

He did not practice on Wednesday and participated on a limited basis Thursday.

When he initially suffered his injury against the Patriots, Head Coach Mike Shanahan and Bailey believed it would be 4-6 weeks before he returned.

Bailey participated in today’s practice as well, though in actuality, it was more of a walkthrough since the bad weather forced the Broncos into the Dome for practice.

“He practiced today,” Shanahan said. “He’s feeling better. Hopefully no setback and we’ll kind of see how he feels before the game.”

If he is healthy enough to play on Sunday, it will surely boost the defense that already has injuries across the board. Prior to his injury, Bailey had lamented the fact that he hadn’t had as many opportunities to make plays — after all, quarterbacks never threw to his side.

NO GROUND WORRIES

Another thing Shanahan spoke about after today’s practice was the situation at running back, and as he said, when injuries decimate a running back corps, things are going to change.

“I think we’ve probably thrown the ball a little bit more this year than we have in the past, but any time you lose five of your guys you’re always going to be tested,” Shanahan said. “I still have a good feeling about the guys that we’ve got.”

And those guys of course include Peyton Hillis, P.J. Pope, the newly added Tatum Bell and the still injured Selvin Young, who has not participated in practice this week.

“I think Peyton Hillis did a great job, he played well,” Shanahan said. “And we’ve got Tatum back. Pope’s been with our system for about seven weeks. Obviously Tatum’s got the experience and the other two guys have really stepped up. I’ll be surprised if we don’t run the ball well.”

No Need For Extra Motivation

Bulletin Board Material for Sunday? Err…Thursday?

Browns Head Coach Romeo Crennel told the media earlier this week, “We’re not throwing in the towel, we’re not giving up on the season, we’re going to beat Denver, and that’s what we’re going to do.”

Brandon Stokley said it didn’t bother him, and that he doesn’t need that type of motivation to get up for a big game, regardless of what day of the week it comes.

“They have the midset that they’re going to beat us, and we’re going to beat them — that’s our mindset,” he said. “It doesn’t matter what they say. It just really comes down to who goes out there and plays better football on Sunday.”

It only took a second for Stokley to remember. “Thursday,” he said with a laugh. “Habit.”

Dre’ Bly agreed, saying bulletin board material like that doesn’t make as big an impact as some people may think.

“It’s motivation, but if you don’t think you’re going to win the game you don’t need to be out here — you don’t need to be playing, you don’t need to be in this league,” he said. “You’re supposed to go out with a swagger and go out there with confidence. Just because he publicized it, it’s no big deal to me.”

Fresh Faces Following Bye

October 27th, 2008 - 5:24pm by Jake GrilleyOther posts by Jake Grilley

The Broncos made several roster moves on Monday, including signing free agent wide receiver Chad Jackson and tackle Matt Murphy to their active roster. The team also elevated Josh Bell to its active roster from its practice squad and placed center Greg Eslinger and cornerback Rashod Moulton on its practice squad.

In two seasons with New England, Jackson played in 14 career games including a start, amassing 13 receptions for 152 yards with three touchdowns.

Head Coach Mike Shanahan said he is looking forward to seeing how Jackson acclimates himself the the Broncos’ system.

“We just had him in here today, and he did a pretty good job for his first day out,” he said. “We’ll get a chance to see over the next week or so.”

Jackson said he feels fairly comfortable in the Broncos offensive system and with a little studying he should have a solid grasp of it.

The former Patriot and Florida Gator said the hardest adjustment for him will be playing in the Mile High air of Denver.

Banged Up But Optimistic Heading Into The Bye

Still Atop the AFC West

The Broncos didn’t want to head into the bye week on a losing note but at 4-3 and still first place in the AFC West the Broncos know they are still in a pretty good position heading into the second half of the season.

Michael Pittman likes where his team is right now but said he knows they are capable of playing at a higher level.

“Right now we are 4-3 and I think that is a pretty good record right now in the NFL because everybody is good in this league,” he said. “We are at the top of our division right now but we have to play better.”

“We just need to do what is needed to win these football games and eliminate these mistakes that we are making on both sides of the ball,” he continued. “We are going to keep battling as a team and as a unit because we believe in one another. Early in the year we were scoring a lot of points and the defense was doing a good job stopping people. We know we can go out there and do a lot of good things, we just have to go out there and do it.”

Disregarding Records

October 8th, 2008 - 3:45pm by Jake GrilleyOther posts by Jake Grilley

The Broncos have the Jacksonville Jaguars on tap for this weekend. The Jags come to Denver with a 2-3 record on the season but the Broncos know that Jacksonville has played all five of its opponents close this season. Denver realizes that it is up against a talented football team, regardless of what its record may be coming in.

“The average fan looks at them and they see a 2-3 record and they don’t see the football team,” Head Coach Mike Shanahan said. “That’s usually indicative of most people. You are looking at the record and not how they have been playing. Our football team is well aware of that and we will be ready to play.”

Toughness on Display

October 5th, 2008 - 8:47pm by mike_riceOther posts by mike_rice

Sometimes you just have to put your foot down. The Broncos did that in Sunday’s 16-13 win over the Buccaneers.

Don’t get me wrong. I love watching shootouts. But there is something to be said for winning a defensive struggle. The Broncos showed they could do that.

I won’t pretend the Buccaneers have an elite offense. The fact remains, however, that they were averaging 350.2 yards per game entering Sunday’s game. They had only 307 against the Broncos.

They were also averaging 22.8 points per game before Sunday. They had just over half that against the Broncos.

The Bucs had allowed just four sacks in the first four games and none in the two games leading up to Sunday’s contest against the Broncos. Denver had three sacks in the 16-13 win.

For as much as the Broncos’ defense struggled early in the season, it toughened up against the Buccaneers. In seven of their 11 possessions, the Buccaneers had the ball for under 2:30. Only four of their possessions netted 37 yards or more. The other seven drives netted nine yards or fewer.
