Stokley Voted DISH Unbeatable Value Player of the Year

February 20th, 2013 - 2:23pm by Stuart ZaasOther posts by

After a season in which he became just the 10th player in NFL history to catch 40-or-more passes and at least five touchdowns at age 36 or older, Brandon Stokley was voted by fans as the DISH Unbeatable Value Player Of The Year.

The inaugural award, sponsored by DISH, recognizes a player that exceeds fan expectations. Whether a free agent or draft choice, a low-profile acquisition or a backup player that takes on the role of unsung hero, the award epitomizes the unbeatable value DISH is committed to providing its customers.

Stokley signed with the Broncos in April and went on to catch 45 passes for 544 yards and five scores during the 2012 season — his second stint with the team.

The 14-year veteran also caught three passes for 27 yards and touchdown in Denver’s AFC Divisional Playoff Game against Baltimore to join Keenan McCardell as the only players in league annals to record a postseason receiving score with four different teams.

The Alley-Oop Attempt

October 31st, 2012 - 5:46pm by Eric DeckerOther posts by

You guys might have heard about a plan Demaryius and I had last week. We had this idea to throw an alley-oop after his touchdown. Salt and Pepper, one guy throws to another guy, just to have some fun. I don’t think we realized the repercussions or the consequences of something like that. We joke and laugh about calling Brandon Stokley “Daddy” in the locker room, but to have a guy that kind of in the heat of battle has that understanding to stop us and say it’s not good right now, I’m very thankful obviously that we saved a penalty in a big situation and probably a fine, too.

He grabbed the ball from me and goes, “What are you doing? You’re going to get fined and you’re going to get a penalty.” At that point I knew, OK, that was dumb.

But rest assured the lob would have been right on target. I’ve had some experience in high school lobbing it up to a couple teammates.

KOA Q&A with Brandon Stokley

July 20th, 2012 - 9:18am by mike_riceOther posts by

Our interview series continues as we lead up to training camp. During the recently-completed OTAs (organized team activities)and mini-camp, 850 KOA spoke with Broncos wide receiver Brandon Stokley (BS), who is back with the team this year.

850 KOA: You’re going to get this question about 500 times in training camp but after OTAs, how do you feel?

BS: I feel great. I feel as good as I’ve felt in five or six years. Everything is feeling good. That could change but right now I feel really good.

850 KOA: You suffered a pretty serious quad injury with the Giants last year and took the season off to rehab it. That seems to have been a good decision for you.

BS: Yeah. It wasn’t like I had any offers to go play anywhere any way. (Chuckling) I wasn’t in any rush. It feels great right now. I took the time off and it healed up fine and has given me no problems.
850 KOA: You are familiar with Peyton Manning from your time playing with him in Indianapolis. Does that familiarity help you at all?

Stokley Looking to Seize Opportunity

May 2nd, 2012 - 4:42pm by Gray CaldwellOther posts by

Brandon Stokley knew he had more in him.

Since his last stint with the Broncos, he spent time with the Seattle Seahawks in 2010 and New York Giants in 2011, playing in just two games last season before suffering an injury.

But the 14th-year veteran didn’t contemplate retirement.

“I wasn’t really ready to be done — I still feel like I can play,” he said. “For me, it was just all about trying to get that opportunity somewhere.”

The Broncos provided that opportunity, and it’s one Stokley won’t take for granted.

Not only does he get a chance to prove he still has it, but his return to the Broncos means a reunion with a former teammate — quarterback Peyton Manning.

“I didn’t ever think I would have another chance to play with him,” Stokley said. “When you’re there (in Indianapolis), I was there with him for four years. I don’t want to say you kind of take him for granted, but then you move on and you kind of realize what you had. You kind of always hope that you’ll get that chance again. For me, it’s been great. To me, I think he’s the best to ever play the position. So to have another chance to play with somebody like that is pretty special.”

Stokley Signed

April 16th, 2012 - 2:43pm by Stuart ZaasOther posts by

The Broncos have signed wide receiver Brandon Stokley, the team announced on Monday. The 14th-year player rejoins the Broncos after catching 108 passes for 1,490 yards in three seasons with the team (2007-09).

“Stokely’s my guy,” wide receiver Eric Decker said at a press conference Monday morning. “He’s a savvy veteran. He’s been around the league for a while, so you can learn a lot from a guy like that.”

For his career, Stokley has appeared in 131 games and hauled in 339 passes for 4,680 yards with 34 touchdowns.

He reunites with quarterback Peyton Manning after the pair spent four seasons together in Indianapolis (2003-06). Stokley was a consistent target for Manning in Indianapolis, catching more than 40 passes in 2004 and 2005, the two full seasons he played for the Colts. In 2004, Stokley posted his most productive season as a pro, setting career highs in receptions (68), yards (1,077) and touchdowns (10). The duo earned Super Bowl rings together during the 2006 season.

Early Impressions

August 24th, 2010 - 11:33pm by mike_riceOther posts by

One of the hardest things to do is to evaluate preseason football. Teams keep play calling pretty vanilla. They protect their front line players. There is little, if any, talk of winning the games.

Yet here we are, halfway through the preseason. The Broncos have lost to the Bengals and the Lions, with games against the Steelers and Vikings still to come. I am left with several impressions.

2010 Training Camp Day 13 Blog

August 13th, 2010 - 10:29am by Gray CaldwellOther posts by

The Broncos headed back to INVESCO Field at Mile High Friday morning for a practice closed to the public.

Just a quick note — all practice times are subject to change, and some sessions next week have been shuffled around. Be sure to check the Fan Information Guide for the full schedule, or call the training camp hotline — (720) 258-3709.

Eddie Royal and Marquez Branson were among the players back at practice after sitting out Thursday’s afternoon session. Despite wearing full pads, the team practiced at a walkthrough speed. For that reason, the majority of the highlights Friday morning came on the offensive side of the ball.

Learning on the Run

May 28th, 2010 - 10:30am by Gray CaldwellOther posts by

Knowshon Moreno has been there.

Well, every NFL player has been there at one point — putting on the pads for the first time and trying to play with the big boys as a rookie.

“It’s a little bit of pressure, it’s something new,” Moreno said. “You’re around new people, a new system — you’ve really got to hit that book and learn as fast as you can because it’s all going so fast.”

Speed seems to be a common theme when discussing rookies.

It is often said that the “speed of the game” is so much faster in the NFL than in college. Tim Tebow isn’t one to argue with that point, but he clarified that it doesn’t always refer to the speed of the players.

“It’s not necessarily how fast guys are, because they don’t necessarily get faster, but what they do get is a lot quicker as far as their thinking,” Tebow said. “There are guys jumping in and out of coverages and so I think that’s where the game speeds up for you.”

Can’t Miss Play of the Year

January 12th, 2010 - 1:00pm by Gray CaldwellOther posts by

Five plays have been nominated for the 2009 Sprint Can’t Miss Play of the Year. One of them comes from the Broncos. Any idea which play it might be?

Yes, it’s Brandon Stokley’s “Immaculate Deflection” from the team’s Week 1 victory against the eventual NFC North-champion Cincinnati Bengals. In case you don’t remember, after the Bengals took the lead with 28 seconds remaining in the game, Kyle Orton let loose a pass from the Denver 13-yard line. The pass was intended for Brandon Marshall, but a crowd of Bengals closed in, and cornerback Leon Hall tipped the ball into the air. Stokley swooped in and snared the pass, sprinting 87 yards into the end zone for the go-ahead score that cemented a 12-7, season-opening victory.

Still need a refresher? Here’s the video:
