Marshall to Brew Sports Soup

November 3rd, 2009 - 12:48pm by Gray CaldwellOther posts by Gray Caldwell

Brandon Marshall will be spending this Tuesday honing his comedy chops on television.

The receiver is taking over the hosting duties for one episode of Sports Soup — a show that is described as “an irreverant look at the state of sports and the people who play and report on them.”

The show plays clips from the world of sports — even pulling from pre- and post-game shows, press conferences and local media — and the host makes witty comments in between highlights.

The host is typically Matt Iseman, who was actually born in Denver, and the comedian said in a press release that he is honored to have Marshall take over his hosting duties for Tuesday’s show.

Marshall Ready To Rival Ravens Attack

October 30th, 2009 - 1:25pm by Chris GentilvisoOther posts by Chris Gentilviso

In his three-plus seasons with the Broncos, Brandon Marshall has faced 26 different opposing teams.

The Baltimore Ravens will become the 27th team on Sunday.

While Marshall did not play in the teams’ 2006 contest as a rookie, he knows plenty about the vaunted defensive attack that he and his teammates have been preparing for.

“It’s going to take four quarters,” Marshall said. “They’re a great team that’s used to winning, that’s used to being in difficult games.”

Showing His Smarts

October 14th, 2009 - 4:22pm by Chris GentilvisoOther posts by Chris Gentilviso

Few NFL quarterbacks can prosper without a strong system of support in place.

For Kyle Orton, recognizing that the Broncos offered that system took a matter of minutes.

“I thought that from day one, this was a great fit for me,” Orton said. “I had a lot of confidence when the trade happened. I was excited about the trade and excited for what I and we could do in this system.”

The “we” he was referring to was his relationship with Head Coach Josh McDaniels. Like Orton, McDaniels had few doubts regarding what his new quarterback was bringing to the table.

“Put on any film of Kyle Orton and you will see a smart football player that has always had a lot of responsibility at the line of scrimmage identifying the defense, getting his team into the right situations,” McDaniels said. “That is what we ask him to do here, and he has done a nice job of it.”

With that confidence in tow, the Broncos are seeing results on the field.

Training Camp Day 1: A.M. Blog

July 31st, 2009 - 11:52am by Gray CaldwellOther posts by Gray Caldwell

Check one more thing off the list on the road to the 2009 season — training camp is here. And the mass of fans lining the far hill of the Broncos practice fields almost an hour and a half before practice kicked off was a little taste of the excitement surrounding Day One.

As players came onto the field — dressed in full pads and uniform, including pants — some took a knee as soon as they hit the grass, pausing to take a moment before the unofficial start of another season.

It was perfect weather for the first day of practice — sunny with a little bit of shade. So without further adieu, here are some quick hits from the first practice session of the team’s 2009 training camp.

Monday Practice Report

July 27th, 2009 - 4:23pm by Gray CaldwellOther posts by Gray Caldwell

Monday marked the first day of training camp for rookies, all three quarterbacks and a few veterans — Kyle Orton, Chris Simms, Ryan Torain and Brandon Marshall were the only vets who participated. Wesley Woodyard and D.J. Williams were scheduled to participate, but didn’t feel well at the time of practice.

Marshall was back with the team for the first time this offseason.

Here are some quick hits from the quick walk-through session:

  • With only one rookie in the position, linebackers coach Don Martindale and assistant linebackers coach Roman Phifer got in some one-on-one instruction with Lee Robinson. All though it did make for one awkward moment, as other coaches yelled out their position for drills (defensive backs, quarterbacks etc.) , Martindale just yelled, “Linebacker!’
  • The players sported the team’s 50th anniversary logo on their practice jerseys.
  • Orton and Marshall spent a couple of minutes off to the side away from drills talking with one another.
  • At 3:44 p.m. the rain started, and 20 minutes later practice ended as a monsoon took over Dove Valley.

    Coach McDaniels on Marshall

June 12th, 2009 - 1:18pm by Gray CaldwellOther posts by Gray Caldwell

Head Coach Josh McDaniels addressed the media concerning Brandon Marshall’s absence from today’s first practice of a mandatory mini-camp. Here is a brief look at some of his comments.

    On Marshall’s absence…
“That’s a personal decision that Brandon’s made, and we’ll do what the league rules allow us to do for a player that misses a mandatory activity. The rest of that is really internal. I’ve spoken to him and his agent, and that’s the decision that he’s making.”

On if Marshall will be fined…
“We’ll do what we think is the right thing to do.”

On if he knows the reason for Marshall’s absence…
“Sure, and we’re not going to go into detail. I’m not going to talk about that. That’s between the Broncos and Brandon and his agent, and when that’s resolved we’ll look forward to having him on the field.”

On whether he expects Marshall on Saturday or Sunday…
“He’ll be here today. We’re having a meeting later this afternoon, and again it’s something that we’re going to take care of and handle in house. He’ll be here later this afternoon but he was not here this morning.”

On whether Marshall is falling behind…
“Well there’s 40 practices before our first game starting in August, he’s a smart player and I’m sure he’ll be able to learn whatever he needs to learn to be able to play successfully if he’s here at training camp, so I’m not concerned about that.”

Zach Eisendrath will post the normal practice blog soon.

    Picture day in Hawaii

    February 8th, 2009 - 4:10am by dave_gaylinnOther posts by dave_gaylinn

Friday was a team picture day for both the AFC and NFC squads. After that was a light walk-through for each team. Brandon and his fiancee took a helicopter tour around the island. I’ve been itching to get in the water for a long time, so I passed and raced down the 16 floors and jumped into the crisp, clear ocean.

The report from the helicopter ride was very positive. There were some scary moments, including one that Brandon described as “we don’t have time to turn, just throw this thing in reverse and let’s get out of here!” They flew right next to a water fall, over Diamond Head crater among other places on the island.

    A quick update from Hawaii

    February 6th, 2009 - 2:37am by dave_gaylinnOther posts by dave_gaylinn

Well, it sure has been an interesting start to Pro Bowl weekend for me.

First, please allow me to introduce myself. In his blog, Jim Saccomano, has often mentioned the behind-the-scenes staff the Broncos have. My name is Dave, and I am a part of that behind-the-scenes staff, Saccomano’s media relations staff to be specific. Since the start of the 2008 season, I have handled Brandon Marshall’s media requests. In that role, I have forged a strong relationship with the starting wide receiver at this weekend’s Pro Bowl. I was fortunate enough that Brandon felt my performance worthy of an invitation to join him in Hawaii.

    Wiegmann Heading to Hawaii

January 13th, 2009 - 12:56pm by Adam ZinserOther posts by Adam Zinser

Jay Cutler and Brandon Marshall already have their tickets to the NFL’s annual all-star game, but now they’ll have a little company.

Casey Wiegmann will now join them in the 2009 Pro Bowl in February. He was listed as the first alternate at center, but with Kevin Mawae of the Titans bowing out of the game due to his torn triceps muscle, Wiegmann steps into the lineup.

This marks the first trip to the Pro Bowl for Wiegmann, who just wrapped up his 13th year in the league and first with the Broncos. He has started 127 consecutive games, the longest active streak among centers in the NFL.

The game will be played on Sunday, Feb. 8, at Aloha Stadium in Honolulu at 2:30 p.m. MST and will be televised by NBC.

    A ‘Dangerous’ Game

December 18th, 2008 - 4:32pm by Gray CaldwellOther posts by Gray Caldwell

It has been well advertised that the Broncos have a chance to clinch a playoff berth with a win on Sunday. The Buffalo Bills are the team to beat, and at 6-8, losers of three-in-a-row, some people might think Sunday is a foregone conclusion.

But Brandon Marshall says not so fast. Just because the Bills are eliminated from the playoffs doesn’t mean they don’t have the ability to come into INVESCO and get a win.

“If a team is not in the playoffs, they want to take somebody home with them,” Marshall said. “It is not easy. A lot of people think, ‘Oh, you are going up against a team that is 6-8,’ but those teams are the ones you don’t want to see at the end of the season when you need a win. They are dangerous.”

But at the same time, Denver has won four of its last six, and with the No. 2 offense in the league, not many people want to see the Broncos come the end of the year, either.

“We are dangerous on the offensive side of the ball and we play with confidence,” Marshall said. “If we limit our mistakes against Buffalo, we can be dangerous on Sunday.”
