Who’s No. 1?

December 1st, 2010 - 2:55pm by Gabe HiattOther posts by

In one corner, wearing red trunks with yellow trim, we have the NFL’s leader in touchdown receptions. In the other corner, wearing white trunks with blue trim, stands the league leader in receiving yards.

For the second time this season, two pass-catching heavyweights will attempt to outperform each other as Dwayne Bowe and the Chiefs host Brandon Lloyd and the Broncos at Arrowhead Stadium on Sunday.

Both receivers scored two touchdowns in the Chiefs’ Week 10 loss to the Broncos in Denver.

Bakke: The Next One May Be The Best One

November 30th, 2010 - 10:55am by Gabe HiattOther posts by

Team photographer Eric Lars Bakke has been working with the Broncos for 26 years. His photography blog will serve as a unique look from the perspective of an NFL photographer, periodically updating the site with tales from the sidelines, some of his favorite photos and the stories behind them.

Each week I look forward to a new game and the photographic challenges that present themselves on the field.

By this point of the season I have fulfilled many of the requests for certain games, players and on-field events needed by the various departments for which I report.

Still there is always a need for more and better photographs.

Snap Judgement

October 14th, 2010 - 3:36pm by Eric DetweilerOther posts by

At times throughout the offseason, Broncos Offensive Coordinator Mike McCoy saw his unit confused by unusual blitz schemes designed by Defensive Coordinator Don ‘Wink’ Martindale.

When that happened, the players and coaches would get together and talk about how best to protect if they saw a similar look again.

With the New York Jets coming to INVESCO Field at Mile High on Sunday, McCoy said those situations were good practice for what Kyle Orton and the Broncos offense are going to face.

Confident Coverage

Perrish Cox did his best Champ Bailey impersonation in the fourth quarter of Sunday’s home opener against the Seahawks.

Bailey picked off a Matt Hasselbeck pass in the red zone on the Seahawks’ first drive of the game, prohibiting a Seattle score and shifting the momentum of the game to his team. Cox intercepted Hasselbeck with less than two minutes remaining in the game, allowing Kyle Orton to kneel the ball three straight times to finish the fourth quarter.

Getting Started

September 14th, 2010 - 12:54am by mike_riceOther posts by

The bottom line is always the most important factor in the NFL. The bottom line is wins and losses.

From that standpoint, it was a tough day for the Broncos in Jacksonville.

But I don’t think it is the entire story. Because the bottom line tends to dwarf everything else, some of the things the Broncos did well get overshadowed by the fact they lost the game. I understand, that is the nature of the beast and it likely always will be.

2010 Training Camp Day 17: P.M. Blog

August 17th, 2010 - 6:53pm by Eric DetweilerOther posts by

This morning the team got a little break only having to wear shells and shorts for practice. But this afternoon, full pads were back on – but only for a portion.

After one 11-on-11 period and a live goal line period, McDaniels told his players to take off their shoulder pads. About an hour into the practice, players took several minutes slipping into shells for the remainder of the workout.

Brian Dawkins returned for the session after missing the morning workout, while several veterans, including Daniel Graham, Champ Bailey, D.J. Williams and Renaldo Hill, got the afternoon off.

A crowd of 953 watched a practice that included several big plays on both sides of the ball and a lot of pre-practice dancing during stretching.

The team jogged back onto the practice field this morning for the first of two sessions. The sun came out in full force to greet the club, heating up the field and forcing onlookers to fan themselves throughout the two-hour period.

Passing Camp Energized

May 27th, 2010 - 2:19pm by Gray CaldwellOther posts by

Thursday marked one of the most energized practices of OTAs so far. In 80-degree weather, the offense and defense squared off for much of the session, and in the end the offense seemed to claim victory.

PASSING ORDER

In drills today, Orton was the first quarterback to take reps, followed by Quinn, Tim Tebow and Tom Brandstater.

It was the first time — during an open practice — that Tebow has taken reps before Brandstater.

Then again, McDaniels has said the order means little in the grand scheme of things.

“We told everyone, ‘Everyone is going to get reps and everybody is going to get rolling in there,’” the head coach said on the first day of OTAs. “The order, I don’t think matters. It doesn’t matter to me and right now I don’t think it should matter to anyone.”

2010 Free Agency Blog

March 4th, 2010 - 5:54pm by Gray CaldwellOther posts by

The free agency period officially got underway at 10:01 p.m. MST on Thursday, so check back with this blog all day for free agency news from across the league, and any official Broncos signings that come across our desk.

8:57 a.m. MST: Wow, you guys have been busy in the comments. Love to see it. All right, time to play some catch-up from the first night/morning of free agency. This early in the game it’s a little hard to tell what’s official and what’s just a bit of speculation, but let’s get started.

  • We do know a couple notes from within the division. First, the Chargers have traded cornerback Antonio Cromartie to the New York Jets. The Jets have confirmed the trade on their site, and sources say it will include a 2011 draft pick — potentially a third-rounder that could turn into a second-rounder — heading to the Chargers.
  • Another note from the Chargers — they have released veteran defensive tackle Jamal Williams and running back Michael Bennett. On the Jets’ side of things, New York has released cornerback Lito Sheppard.
  • One of the bigger names among the available free agents on defense was Colts linebacker Gary Brackett. Well, it appears Brackett will remain a Colts linebacker after agreeing a new deal.
  • It appears the Lions have been active as the new league year has gotten underway. It has been reported that the team has agreed to a deal with free agent receiver Nate Burleson. In addition, apparently the Lions and Browns have worked out a trade that will send defensive tackle Corey Williams to Detroit. And finally, Kyle Vanden Bosch is apparently saying he and the Lions have worked out a deal in free agency.
  • 9:10 a.m. MST: Some Broncos news just came across our desk: Brandon Lloyd and Russ Hochstein have agreed in principle to re-sign with the team. Terms will not be released, but we’ll have more on this later.

    Larsen and Royal Ruled Out

December 25th, 2009 - 2:20pm by Chris GentilvisoOther posts by

At his Friday afternoon press conference, Head Coach Josh McDaniels said Spencer Larsen (hamstring) and Eddie Royal (neck/head) have been ruled out of Sunday’s Week 16 matchup with the Philadelphia Eagles.

With Larsen and Royal’s absences, a host of other players will get some additional chances. McDaniels said Peyton Hillis will serve as the team’s primary fullback, while several other receivers could be called on to fill Royal’s void.

One of those individuals is rookie Kenny McKinley, who’s made an early dent in the kicking game. The South Carolina product has appeared in six games this season, with six kickoff returns for 136 yards and three punt returns for 37 yards.
