Chiefs’ Ground Game a Bright Spot

December 26th, 2012 - 11:55am by Sam DavisOther posts by

Only three running backs have surpassed the 100-yard mark against the Denver defense in 2012. The last one to do it – the Chiefs’ Jamaal Charles — is coming to Denver on Sunday.

Denver has faced a handful of elite rushers in 2012 and has fared well enough to stand as NFL’s the third-ranked rush defense heading into Week 17.

But five weeks ago, Charles ran it 23 times for 107 yards against the Broncos. The Chiefs hope to feed them another heavy dose of Charles on Sunday.

“Jamaal has done a really nice job for us, has a chance to become a 1,500-yard rusher and that’s something that doesn’t happen every day,” Kansas City Head Coach Romeo Crennel said in a conference call. “Everybody can’t do that. He has good ability and he’s helped this team quite a bit.”

Quinn to Start for Chiefs

November 21st, 2012 - 11:04am by Sam DavisOther posts by

On Wednesday, the Kansas City Chiefs announced that Brady Quinn will be the starting quarterback for Sunday’s game against the Broncos. It will be Quinn’s third start of the season — his first in Kansas City — after spending the prior two years with the Broncos and not appearing in a game.

“I like his leadership qualities,” Chiefs Head Coach Romeo Crennel said. “He has experience with a couple different teams and he’s seen a couple different things. I think that will bode well for him.”

Shortly after Crennel made the decision public, quarterback Brady Quinn spoke with Denver media on a conference call.

“Anytime you get the opportunity to start in the National Football League, you’re very blessed,” said Quinn, who has started 14 games since coming into the league in 2007 as the 22nd overall pick. “I haven’t had as many opportunities in six seasons as some guys get in one season. Any opportunity for me to play is good. I’m always learning, always trying to get better.”

NFL Players Participate in Business Programs

March 12th, 2012 - 10:29am by Stuart ZaasOther posts by

Broncos offensive lineman Russ Hochstein and quarterback Brady Quinn are among the 66 players who have enrolled in the NFL Business Management and Entrepreneurial Program at Harvard Business School and the Kellogg School of Management at Northwestern University.

The program is one of NFL Player Engagement’s initiatives to assist players in preparing for their post-playing careers. Since the program’s inception in 2005, more than 700 players have participated.

“We are excited to continue this program which has been beneficial to so many of our players,” said NFL Vice President of Player Engagement Troy Vincent, who has attended each of the business management programs. “Over the years, the Business Management and Entrepreneurial Program has assisted players — myself included — and their families in making smarter business decisions while inspiring others to go back to school for an MBA.”

A Fluid Position

Last weekend, the Broncos made a change at quarterback.

No, it didn’t have anything to do with Kyle Orton, the signal-caller behind the NFL’s No. 1 passing offense, but rather the two players behind him.

Changing of the Guard

September 7th, 2010 - 4:38pm by Gabe HiattOther posts by

Deciding which players will board the plane to Jacksonville for the first week of the regular season evokes a conditional enthusiasm. The Broncos can look forward to a clean slate of football, but only after saying goodbye to the players that didn’t make the final cut.

“There’s a little more elbow room in the locker room — and this is a hard time for everybody because in training camp you forge relationships, and it’s hard to see some guys go,” Spencer Larsen said. “You just get used to the guys you are around and as the season goes, you just kind of jell.”

Head Coach Josh McDaniels said the process wasn’t easy.

Training Camp Day 10 Blog

August 10th, 2010 - 3:23pm by Eric DetweilerOther posts by

After a day off, the Broncos were back on the practice field on Tuesday. Last week, dark clouds and rain greeted most of the afternoon practices, but today the sun was shining with very few clouds in sight. A crowd of 1,593 gathered to soak in the sun and watch the Broncos return to work with the preseason opener less than a week away.

In a pre-practice media session, Head Coach Josh McDaniels said he and his staff were productive during the two-day break, while it gave players a chance to rest and get treatment. It also gave the rookies, whose new and ridiculous haircuts created quite a stir at Saturday’s INVESCO Field workout, time to fix their veteran teammates’ clipping mistakes. Tim Tebow was among the freshly shaven rookies.

Final Day of Minicamp

June 13th, 2010 - 11:56am by Gabe HiattOther posts by

On October 31, the Broncos travel across the Atlantic Ocean to take on the San Francisco 49ers in London. During today’s final minicamp practice, they got a taste of what the weather may be like in six months.

Much like yesterday, temperatures were in the 40s with a steady rain falling throughout the session. Dicky Lyons readied himself for the weather by wearing long sleeves, gloves and a hand warmer.

Minicamp Underway

The final Broncos camp until training camp got underway on Friday under overcast skies and cooler temperatures. As the session wore on, more and more playmakers entered the fray in an action-packed practice.

LINEUP

  • In the first 7-on-7 drill of the day, Kyle Orton stepped up under center for the first reps, followed by Tim Tebow and then Brady Quinn. That same rotation held true during a 7-on-7 red zone drill later in practice, but during several 11-on-11 drills, the order was Orton, Quinn then Tebow.
  • A few new defenders saw repetitions with the first unit defense on Friday. Jarvis Moss and college free agent Kevin Alexander lined up at the outside linebacker spots with D.J. Williams and Mario Haggan inside, and Perrish Cox occasionally lined up outside at cornerback opposite Andre’ Goodman or Champ Bailey during certain drills.

The rest of the defensive lineup featured Justin Bannan, Jamal Williams and Ryan McBean on the line and Brian Dawkins and Renaldo Hill at safety.

    Tebow, Quinn and Orton

Have to give the guys credit where credit is due….true professionals and I appreciate seeing it. Each has a role to play and a role to compete for, and may the best man win. Don’t bother reading the papers as they’re on a roll to create as much controversy as they can between the players and it’s almost comical.

Big news of the day came out of Miami, with our buddy Brandon and another hip surgery….wow, interesting?? and I mean in the way we all know Brandon. I stopped by his site and it said he’d been overseas in Thailand and the islands over there…hmmmmm.

    O.K. back to the fellas:

    Tebow Talk–Part 2

    May 17th, 2010 - 11:25pm by mike_riceOther posts by

The Broncos’ passing camp is underway. Clearly, there is much attention on the Broncos’ four quarterbacks: Kyle Orton, Brady Quinn, Tom Brandstater and Tim Tebow.

Shortly after the NFL draft, 850 KOA had the chance to talk with Tebow (TT) one two occasions. Here is part two of our interview.

850 KOA: You’ve obviously been blessed with great skills. But it’s apparent you have a broader perspective on things. Where does that come from?

TT: It’s having that relationship with Jesus Christ and knowing that football is just a game. It’s passionate, I love it. I care about it, I want to be the best I can be at football. But at the end of the day, it’s just a game. There are things that are more important. Football gives me a platform. It gives me an opportunity to walk into a hospital and make a kid smile. It gives me the opportunity to talk at a youth ranch and inspire young boys. It gives me an opportunity to talk to a team and tell them you can go reach your dreams if you believe in yourself and outwork your opponent. That’s what I believe football gives me. It gives me the opportunity to share my faith and that’s what I love about it. I believe it’s an obligation to make a difference in people’s lives because you are blessed with a platform. If you go out there and win games and try to win championships, at the end of the day, what does your life really mean? You won some games. But those trophies, they’re going to rust and they’re not going to mean much one day. If you make a difference in people’s lives, that’s going to make an impact and that’s going to last forever.
