Remembering Fred Gehrke

Let’s take another step back today to look at another fantastic moment that could only have happened back in the day.

We are once again going to revisit one of the most story-laden franchises and times in pro football history, the remarkable Los Angeles Rams of the late 1940′s and early 1950′s.

The source of this little known episode in pro football is from the horse’s mouth-in this case, the general manager of the horses. I was hired by General Manager Fred Gehrke of the Broncos in 1978 and we became very close over the years.

As many of you know, he is a remarkable figure in pro football history, and is a member of the Pro Football Hall of Fame as one its Pioneer Award winners.

HoF Memories: Waterfield and Van Brocklin

Continuing on the theme of Hall of Fame members who have some lesser known tidbits involving them, let’s visit the Los Angeles Rams of the early 1950’s again. If it seems like we keep going back there, the reason is due to how much took place at that time and place in America.

They played before 100,000 a game in the Los Angeles Coliseum, with alternating quarterbacks who BOTH made the Pro Football Hall of Fame. Just think about that. How could a team have alternating quarterbacks who both made the Hall of Fame, and it’s not a trick question or topic.

The players were Norm Van Brocklin and Bob Waterfield, but their performances were just part of the story.
