Broncos-Chiefs: First-Quarter Notes

December 9th, 2007 - 2:10pm by AndrewOther posts by

2:06 P.M. MST: The sunshine is brilliant; the air frigid. Time for some football.

2:07 P.M. MST: Brandon Marshall sprints onto the field with a somersault … it’s not quite Marcus Thomas-like, but it’s not bad, either. Speaking of Harris, today represents his regular-season NFL debut.

2:13 P.M. MST: Broncos win the coin toss and will receive.

2:15 P.M. MST: Off we go. Andre Hall is deep to receive and returns to the football to the Denver 23.

2:17 P.M. MST: Second play … Selvin Young scoots around left end … Outstanding blocks by Chris Kuper, Cecil Sapp and Brandon Stokley … 50 yards later, the Broncos are at the Kansas City 21.

2:16 P.M. MST: Selvin Young starts at tailback and darts six yards on the game’s first play, running to the left side.

2:18 P.M. MST: That’s how you celebrate a contract extension … Brandon Stokley leaps in the right side of the end zone to grab Jay Cutler’s pass in front of Ty Law … Stokley got Law to bite as he stuttered and faked a curl before sprinting forward into the end zone … Four plays, 77 yards and the Broncos lead 7-0 before many people have settled into their seats … 13:20 left in the quarter.

2:21 P.M. MST: The good fortune nearly continued for the Broncos as Louis Green forced a Benny Sapp fumble on the kickoff … Kansas City recovered.

2:21 P.M. MST: Marcus Thomas in the Broncos’ defensive starting XI … Nothing unexpected in the opening defense.

2:24 P.M. MST: Outstanding penetration by Alvin McKinley to snuff out a Kolby Smith carry on third-and-1 … Thomas was also right there to make the play if McKinley could not have finished the tackle … After the 53-yard Dustin Colquitt punt, the Broncos will start at their 16 with 11:04 left in the quarter … nice job by Glenn Martinez to maintain his balance and not fall out of bounds on the 6-yard return.

2:25 P.M. MST: Brandon Marshall lobbies for a pass-interference penalty on Patrick Surtain, and appeared to have a good point, since the Chiefs defender had his right arm wrapped around Marshall’s midsection … no call.

2:25 P.M. MST: After Travis Henry saw some momentary work on the last series after Young’s 50-yard carry, the rookie from Texas is back in on this series.

2:26 P.M. MST: Daniel Graham talked this week about hoping to get the football more … There’s some evidence in his favor … Came back for Cutler’s pass and turned it into a 28-yard gain … Broncos near midfield … and they cross it on an 17-yard Young run on the following snap.

2:27 P.M. MST: Travis Henry with his first carry of the day, for six yards … Broncos at the KC 28 … Next play out of the shotgun, second-and-4 … Cutler finds Marshall, who hangs on to this one — with no defender hanging on him — and made a spin move and a stutter move to work past Ty Law and Jarrad Page, among others … Broncos in first-and-goal at the KC 6.

2:29 P.M. MST: Denver already has 158 yards … now 159 after Henry lunges over the goal line for a 1-yard score that is his third touchdown in the last two weeks.

2:31 P.M. MST: KC will start at its 29 after Benny Sapp’s kickoff return.

2:33 P.M. MST: In spite of the arctic conditions, the crowd today appears to be outstanding … of course, it has had much about which it can cheer so far, but the vast majority of the fans are present and accounted for.

2:34 P.M. MST: KC going backwards … second 5-yard penalty on them this series … third-and-16, and the Chiefs pick up 14 … nice, but not enough.

2:35 P.M. MST: San Diego wins in overtime … but bear in mind, folks, that they key game that the Broncos need the Chargers to lose — assuming Denver can win out — is against the Raiders in Week 17, so the Broncos can reclaim a division-record tiebreaker if the teams are deadlocked at 9-7. The Chargers’ win today really doesn’t hurt the Broncos all that much. If the Chargers had lost today and finished 9-7, and the Broncos had finished 9-7, San Diego would have won the tiebreaker anyhow since that San Diego 9-7 finish would have included a win over Oakland. The Broncos really are in no worse shape than they were when the day started.

2:38 P.M. MST: Broncos go three-and-out for the first time today … Eddie Kennison is announced as the punt returner, and the Denver fans, appropriately, boo. That’s the kind of vitriol that warms a man on a cold, lonely winter’s night.

2:41 P.M. MST: Josh Mallard, playing some defensive end, tips a pass at the line of scrimmage … Chiefs in third-and-7 … Brodie Croyle in the shotgun … and Kris Wilson can’t hang on to the pass. Punt time — again — for the Kansas Citians.

2:46 P.M. MST: Brandon Marshall, on the Broncos’ second play of their next series, gets tossed for a loss of six yards after looking to throw on a reverse … No one was open downfield … Broncos then go three-and-out after gaining nine yards on a third-and-16 one play later. Chiefs will begin the next series at their 37 as the first quarter ends.

Costanza, Bly, Orange and Rockies

Ellipses for a Tuesday …

… You’re never as great as people say when you’re winning; you’re never as lousy as people espouse when you’re losing. And even when you fall 41-3, the line isn’t all that thick between victory and defeat. Maybe it’s as wide as a strip of paint between parking spaces in the INVESCO Field lot, but that’s about it. There’s a reason why the cliche’ about the “24-hour rule,” exists; it’s a good guideline for forgetting about the past, whether it’s the finest moment possible or the worst. That rule can have a 24-hour extension, however, if you’re going to be off for an unusually lengthy time frame, like the Colorado Rockies or an NFL team that wins its conference championship …

… I’m always fascinated by the automated blog links that occasionally pop up. Child hurling in India? Where the heck did that come from? …

… I never thought LetPlummerPlay would write, “Let Mason blog!” First time for everything, I reckon …

Anyhow, let’s dive in, shall we?

We’ve gotten more than a few questions about the status of Dre’ Bly

It doesn’t seem as though the slight shoulder separation will be a problem; Head Coach Mike Shanahan said Monday that Bly likely wouldn’t even need a harness on the ailing right shoulder. We’ll see what the injury reports of the next few days reveal, but as Bly said, “My shoulder or my hand has got to be cut off for me to come out of the game.” Sounds like a man who’ll be ready when the bell rings — whether it’s at 6:05 p.m. MDT next Monday or 6:40.

From RSH:

Quick question for you, any chance the Broncos will wear the orange jerseys on Monday night or are they going all-blue again? Perhaps it’s wishful thinking on my behalf because of Halloween and because I love the orange.

It’ll be the blues. Teams have to put in for league approval to wear the third jersey months before the season arrives. In 2004, the last time the Broncos wore orange, the move was announced in June — five months before they actually put them on. The team lost 25-24 to the Oakland Raiders, dropping the record in the alternate oranges to 0-2. The only question is — will the Broncos go with blue pants or white? Sunday night’s win in the all-blues pushed the team’s record to 4-3 in that ensemble.

From 1ARABIANKNIGHT:

Blessings be upon you BRONCOS!!

“Thank You for doing as I asked, in Honoring my slain”…..the Spirit of Mile High says for me to give to you. I, J’shua, Messenger of ~Adonai~

And it just goes on like this, at least until he starts talking about Jim Bates and the defensive package, which is a pretty jarring right turn in his narrative.

I didn’t major in theology, and when it comes to religion, I’m far more certain of what I’m not than what I am. Some of y’all say this is mocking God … I’ll leave those assertions elsewhere, because I probably haven’t studied the Bible as much as some in these parts (like our man Rev79).

So can anyone explain to me what this guy’s talking about — while, of course, not firing the spark that creates a holy war around here?

From myleshigh:

Oh yea, Mase, you get Rockies tickets or just not interested?

I was quite interersted .. but I, like many locals, failed. After a couple of expletives were uttered, I was emotionally okay with it. Disappointed, yes; I would rather have seen a lottery, but putting it on-line was, in effect, a lottery.

Twice I got past the countdown page. On the first, I put in for four seats — this was still fairly early in the game — and was rebuffed. On the second, I put in for two, entered the confirmation word … and was sent back to the countdown page. I felt like George Costanza visiting the “Soup Nazi” and being rebuffed when asking for bread.

“No soup for you!”

It wasn’t until a frustrated friend’s e-mail missive landed in my box at mid-afternoon that I advanced from mildly peeved to flat-out … well, you can probably finish the sentence.

The only person I heard of getting tickets was somebody in Ohio that was a friend of a friend’s officemate. He’s just going to put them on eBay and let the cash come to him.

My reply to my friend included the use of a mildly creative profanity to decribe this profiteering Ohioan. I reckon it’s simply reminder No. 18,447 that the world simply ain’t fair. The other 18,446 are infinitely more important than getting tickets to a game, no matter how momentous it may seem.

If you got tickets and are going to use them yourself, then my heartiest congratulations; I know you’ll have fun. If you bought them with the mere intention of opening up bidding on any of the myriad of ticket re-sale sites or via the classifieds or what-not … then I hope you spend your profits the way George Costanza spent the money he earned on interest:

The Wisdom of George Costanza

And by the way, lawdog, I am a nerd — and I’m damn proud of it.

And one more thing, Foxy … the elbow comes and goes, like George Costanza’s involuntary elbow twitch.

Three Costanza references in one blog … not too shabby. See you Wednesday.

Broncos Have the Blues …

October 21st, 2007 - 4:12pm by AndrewOther posts by

… when it comes to pants, that is.

For the first time since their last Sunday Night Football game against Seattle on Dec. 3 of last year, the Broncos will wear their blue-on-blue ensemble. In the past two years, it has become their night-game staple; the team wore the uniforms in each of its prime-time home games in 2006, going 2-2 in the uniforms.

Denver also wore them twice on Monday Night Football in 2003, splitting the games for an overall mark of 3-3 in the all-blues. Prior to that season, they hadn’t been seen since the ’97 preseason.
