Quick Hits from Fox

On Willis McGahee’s late-game success:
“He’s one of those guys—I’ve had players like that in the past—that take a little time to get a feel for it and get in a groove. In the run game, that can be particularly true. Then, there’s a wear-down effect on your opponent as well. It’s like body blows in a heavyweight fight. They might take their toll, maybe not in the first five rounds but in the last five rounds. Part of that’s just a culmination of sticking to it and pounding it until you open it up.”

On Von Miller’s development:
“Whether it’s quarterback, outside linebacker, fullback, left guard, this is the best there is in the world. When you take level jumps like going from JV to Varsity, you’re taking a big level jump, so it takes a minute for any young player. He’s gotten better every week. I think his body of work proves that whether it’s run, pass rush, I think he’s improved quite a bit since the beginning of the season.”

Goodman Returns INT for TD

November 17th, 2011 - 8:41pm by Max HensonOther posts by

Thanks to the Denver defense the game is tied at 10.

Cornerback Andre’ Goodman stepped in front of a pass intended for Plaxico Burress, tipped the ball to himself and returned the interception for a 26-yard score.

Matt Prater added the game-tying PAT. 4:25 remains in the third quarter.

The interception return for a touchdown was the first of Goodman’s career.

A Week’s Work

December 10th, 2010 - 2:48pm by Gabe HiattOther posts by

After wading in and out of the lineup because of injuries, two Broncos could return to the defensive backfield this week.

In his Friday press conference, Interim Head Coach Eric Studesville said Andre’ Goodman and Darcel McBath had two good days of practice this week, and the team has another chance to judge the players’ health in Friday’s practice.

Mays, Gronkowski to IR

December 6th, 2010 - 2:52pm by Gray CaldwellOther posts by

Two players who joined the Broncos in trades before the season are headed to the injured reserve.

After sustaining an ankle and knee injury, respectively, in Sunday’s loss to the Kansas City Chiefs, Dan Gronkowski and Joe Mays are out for the remainder of the season.

Gronkowski, who had eight catches for 65 yards this season, suffered his injury in the second quarter but toughed it out to return to the game.

“He’s just a tough (player),” Head Coach Josh McDaniels said. “He (injured) it and then he went back in and taped it again at halftime. I love his toughness and we have a great deal of respect for what he tried to do yesterday, because he did not want to come out of the game. As a coach, you appreciate that a lot.”

While Gronkowski did not reinjure the ankle, the initial injury was severe enough to end his season.

McDaniels also discussed the loss of Mays, who has stepped in as a starter at middle linebacker in five of the previous six games, accumulating 40 tackles and a pass defensed this season.

Striking a Balance

November 19th, 2010 - 5:24pm by Eric DetweilerOther posts by

The package of plays designed for Tim Tebow showcased a new wrinkle in Sunday’s win against Kansas City when the rookie quarterback tossed a 3-yard touchdown pass to Spencer Larsen.

Besides ensuring Tebow heads into Week 11 with a sparkling 118.8 passer rating, McDaniels said the play represents a natural progression for the package.

After a run in a similar situation earlier in the game on which Tebow scored a rushing touchdown, the coaching staff saw the Chiefs overplaying for the run and trusted Tebow to make the play with his arm.

“I think now everybody knows we will throw it with him,” McDaniels said. “It is just a matter of picking your spots there.”

Next Guy Up

October 11th, 2010 - 4:43pm by Gray CaldwellOther posts by

With the news that five defensive players — including three starters — will sit out Sunday’s home matchup with the New York Jets, the Broncos locker room shared a simple philosophy.

“The next guy up has got to perform,” said David Bruton, who said he’ll be ready to take advantage of his opportunity if he’s asked to step in at safety with Brian Dawkins and Darcel McBath out.

Bruton started a Week 15 matchup against Oakland last season when Renaldo Hill sat out with an injury, registering five tackles and a pass breakup. He said that experience has made him more confident while approaching a similar circumstance this week.

Five Defenders Out

October 11th, 2010 - 12:21pm by Eric DetweilerOther posts by

Robert Ayers, Brian Dawkins, Andre’ Goodman, Darcel McBath and Wesley Woodyard will miss Sunday’s home game against the Jets due to injury, Head Coach Josh McDaniels announced Monday.

The head coach did not rule out Demaryius Thomas, who left Sunday’s loss at Baltimore with a head and neck injury after a second-quarter kickoff return.

McDaniels did not discuss the nature of the injuries or how long the players might be out. McBath left Sunday’s game in the first quarter with an ankle injury and did not return, while Dawkins went down with a knee injury in the fourth quarter and didn’t return, according to press box injury updates.

Goodman, Harris Good to Go

October 1st, 2010 - 10:24am by Gray CaldwellOther posts by

While the backfield will take a hit for this Sunday’s game, other positions are getting healthier as the Broncos prepare to head to Tennessee to take on the Titans.

Head Coach Josh McDaniels said he expects Andre’ Goodman and Ryan Harris to be able to suit up for the Week 4 clash. Both players missed last week’s loss to the Indianapolis Colts.

If Harris steps back into his starting role at right tackle, that would push Zane Beadles out of the lineup, but McDaniels is excited for what that would do to the depth of the offensive line.

“I think he’d be a really solid sixth lineman for us if he’s not starting because he has versatility to play inside and he can also be our third tackle and he’s done admirably there,” he said of Beadles. “So, if that’s the role he ends up fitting into, that’s fine.”

On the other side of the spectrum, the head coach said Knowshon Moreno and Spencer Larsen will most likely sit out Sunday’s game. That leaves Correll Buckhalter, Laurence Maroney and Andre Brown as the three running backs in the rotation, and tight end Dan Gronkowski has a chance to spend time as a fullback — something he did on occasion last week against the Colts.

“Gronkowski could play in the backfield a little bit more than what you have seen so far,” McDaniels said. “(He) did a good job last week of filling in for Spencer when Spencer went out, so it could happen more this week.”

Moreno, Harris Out

September 24th, 2010 - 1:06pm by Gray CaldwellOther posts by

Head Coach Josh McDaniels announced Friday morning that Knowshon Moreno and Ryan Harris will not suit up for this Sunday’s game against the Indianapolis Colts. They are listed as out on the injury report.

Harris had been listed on the injury report this week with an ankle injury. He practiced on a limited basis on Wednesday, but didn’t practice Thursday or Friday.

Moreno wasn’t on the injury report initially, but McDaniels said that he “just sustained a little something that we won’t be able to play through this week, yesterday.” He didn’t practice Friday.

In his stead, Andre Brown, Correll Buckhalter and Laurence Maroney are all ready to step up on Sunday.

“In this business, you can’t expect anything,” said Maroney, who had full participation on Thurdsay and Friday despite a thigh injury. “I know one thing — I’m going to be prepared for whatever comes my way, whatever Josh (McDaniels) asks of me.”

McDaniels said he is hopeful that both Champ Bailey (foot) and Andre’ Goodman (thigh), who both practiced for the first time this week on Friday, will suit up on Sunday.

“They both want to play, and I think they’re getting closer to being ready and able to,” he said.

Both cornerbacks are listed as questionable.

As for the rest of the injury report, Chris Kuper (knee) and Wesley Woodyard (hamstring) are listed as questionable, and Maroney and Darcel McBath (forearm) are probable.

For the Colts, Anthony Gozalez, Ramon Humber and Bob Sanders are listed as out for Sunday’s game. Joseph Addai, Charlie Johnson, Clint Session, Pierre Garcon, Brandon King and Eric Foster are questionable. Gary Brackett, Jeff Saturday and Jerraud Powers are probable.

Confident Coverage

September 20th, 2010 - 6:50pm by Gabe HiattOther posts by

Perrish Cox did his best Champ Bailey impersonation in the fourth quarter of Sunday’s home opener against the Seahawks.

Bailey picked off a Matt Hasselbeck pass in the red zone on the Seahawks’ first drive of the game, prohibiting a Seattle score and shifting the momentum of the game to his team. Cox intercepted Hasselbeck with less than two minutes remaining in the game, allowing Kyle Orton to kneel the ball three straight times to finish the fourth quarter.
