Notebook: OTAs Day Four

May 30th, 2012 - 2:22pm by Gray CaldwellOther posts by

Wide receiver Andre Caldwell had one of the biggest highlights from Wednesday’s practice, hauling in a deep touchdown on a throw from quarterback Caleb Hanie.

“That’s my motivation every day – to come out here and prove to everybody that I should be out there on the field making plays,” Caldwell said. “I can be a household name and help this team win ball games.”

Caldwell explained that on that route in particular, he was one-on-one with a cornerback, gave him a quick move inside and then used his speed to run underneath Hanie’s pass.

That speed, Caldwell said, allows him to play outside receiver, but he said he feels comfortable playing as a slot receiver as well.

Regardless of where he lines up, he’s excited to have quarterback Peyton Manning throwing him the ball.

“Peyton signing here had a big impact on my decision,” he said. “I wanted to go to a passing offense with a quarterback who could get the ball to me and use a bunch of receivers, just let us make plays. From what I have seen of Peyton in the past, he makes the receivers look great. He puts the ball in the right spot so we can’t help but catch it. Just put your hands out, it’s going to lay right in the basket.”

Chain Reaction

March 30th, 2012 - 10:01am by Stuart ZaasOther posts by

When the Broncos signed quarterback Peyton Manning, much was made about the on-field contributions expected of the four-time NFL MVP. With the first Sunday of the regular season 164 days away, Manning has already helped the team improve via the free agent market.

In the ten days since Manning agreed to terms on March 20, the Broncos have added seven additional free agents: WR Andre Caldwell, LB Wesley Woodyard, CB Tracy Porter, QB Caleb Hanie, TE Joel Dreessen, TE Jacob Tamme and DE Jason Hunter.

Executive Vice President of Football Operations John Elway said that he expected other free agents to be excited about the prospects of playing with a proven winner like Manning.

“It always helps because when you have a guy on your team like Peyton Manning, you have a chance to win and players in the NFL know that,” Elway said. “There are a lot of guys out there that are free that want to go somewhere where they can win championships. It is a huge benefit and it already has [helped]. We have seen that as we have seen the reaction of guys on our football team that we have been dealing with, even within the league. It is a huge plus to have a Peyton Manning on your roster.”

Caldwell Talks Coming to Denver

March 22nd, 2012 - 9:48am by Stuart ZaasOther posts by

After signing with the Broncos on Thursday morning, wide receiver Andre Caldwell did a conference call with the local media.

He said that while his agent had been in touch with the Broncos since early in the free agency period, his interest peaked once the team inked quarterback Peyton Manning to a deal earlier this week.

“It was a big factor,” Caldwell said about Manning. “He’s a veteran quarterback who knows how to win games. He knows how to put players in positions to be their best. He gets the best out of his receivers. That played a big part of it and that’s a big reason why I came.”

Caldwell, Woodyard & Ramirez On Board

March 22nd, 2012 - 7:54am by Gray CaldwellOther posts by

The Broncos added another free agent on Wednesday — wide receiver Andre Caldwell.

The 6-foot, 190-pound receiver has played in 51 games — including 14 starts — in his career with the Cincinnati Bengals.

Entering his fifth NFL season, Caldwell has totaled 124 receptions for 1,172 yards and six touchdowns. A third-round pick by the Bengals in the 2008 NFL Draft from the University of Florida, he left the Gators as the school’s all-time leader in receptions.

His older brother, Reche, was a wide receiver for Washington (2007), New England (2006) and San Diego (2002-05).

In addition, the team agreed to terms with free agent linebacker Wesley Woodyard and re-signed guard Manny Ramirez earlier this week.
