Healthy Update

October 15th, 2010 - 1:51pm by Gray CaldwellOther posts by

While the week began with a blow, Friday brought some positive news on the injury front.

Demaryius Thomas returned to the practice field for the first time this week, having fully recovered from a concussion suffered last Sunday.

“He passed all of the tests, so that’s good for him and today will be another test, too — he’s got to go through a practice and feel comfortable with that,” Head Coach Josh McDaniels said. “He didn’t have any recurring symptoms yesterday and that’s a couple days in a row (without symptoms), so we feel like we’ve gone through all of the things we’ve needed to go through to put him back on the field.”

In addition to Thomas’ return, Knowshon Moreno practiced for the second consecutive day, something that McDaniels said has the team excited.

The Broncos’ injury report features 10 players, five of which were declared out of Sunday’s game earlier this week — Robert Ayers (foot), Brian Dawkins (knee), Andre’ Goodman (quadricep), Darcel McBath (ankle) and Wesley Woodyard (hamstring).

With those five players out, McDaniels said the team might have to get creative with its lineup — “We’re looking at a few different concoctions of alignments,” — but David Bruton said he’s confident that whoever is on the field will step up.

Fortunately for the Broncos, the remaining five players on the injury report all practiced at least once this week. Andre Brown (illness) and Mario Haggan (neck) are probable for the contest, while Spencer Larsen (ankle), Moreno (hamstring) and Thomas (concussion) are listed as questionable.

As for the Jets, cornerback Darrelle Revis is questionable for the contest. The five remaining players on the injury report — linebacker Calvin Pace (foot), safety Jim Leonhard (biceps), center Nick Mangold (shoulder), guard Brandon Moore (hamstring) and linebacker Jamaal Westerman (ankle) are probable to play on Sunday.

Goodman, Harris Good to Go

October 1st, 2010 - 10:24am by Gray CaldwellOther posts by

While the backfield will take a hit for this Sunday’s game, other positions are getting healthier as the Broncos prepare to head to Tennessee to take on the Titans.

Head Coach Josh McDaniels said he expects Andre’ Goodman and Ryan Harris to be able to suit up for the Week 4 clash. Both players missed last week’s loss to the Indianapolis Colts.

If Harris steps back into his starting role at right tackle, that would push Zane Beadles out of the lineup, but McDaniels is excited for what that would do to the depth of the offensive line.

“I think he’d be a really solid sixth lineman for us if he’s not starting because he has versatility to play inside and he can also be our third tackle and he’s done admirably there,” he said of Beadles. “So, if that’s the role he ends up fitting into, that’s fine.”

On the other side of the spectrum, the head coach said Knowshon Moreno and Spencer Larsen will most likely sit out Sunday’s game. That leaves Correll Buckhalter, Laurence Maroney and Andre Brown as the three running backs in the rotation, and tight end Dan Gronkowski has a chance to spend time as a fullback — something he did on occasion last week against the Colts.

“Gronkowski could play in the backfield a little bit more than what you have seen so far,” McDaniels said. “(He) did a good job last week of filling in for Spencer when Spencer went out, so it could happen more this week.”

Moreno, Harris Out

September 24th, 2010 - 1:06pm by Gray CaldwellOther posts by

Head Coach Josh McDaniels announced Friday morning that Knowshon Moreno and Ryan Harris will not suit up for this Sunday’s game against the Indianapolis Colts. They are listed as out on the injury report.

Harris had been listed on the injury report this week with an ankle injury. He practiced on a limited basis on Wednesday, but didn’t practice Thursday or Friday.

Moreno wasn’t on the injury report initially, but McDaniels said that he “just sustained a little something that we won’t be able to play through this week, yesterday.” He didn’t practice Friday.

In his stead, Andre Brown, Correll Buckhalter and Laurence Maroney are all ready to step up on Sunday.

“In this business, you can’t expect anything,” said Maroney, who had full participation on Thurdsay and Friday despite a thigh injury. “I know one thing — I’m going to be prepared for whatever comes my way, whatever Josh (McDaniels) asks of me.”

McDaniels said he is hopeful that both Champ Bailey (foot) and Andre’ Goodman (thigh), who both practiced for the first time this week on Friday, will suit up on Sunday.

“They both want to play, and I think they’re getting closer to being ready and able to,” he said.

Both cornerbacks are listed as questionable.

As for the rest of the injury report, Chris Kuper (knee) and Wesley Woodyard (hamstring) are listed as questionable, and Maroney and Darcel McBath (forearm) are probable.

For the Colts, Anthony Gozalez, Ramon Humber and Bob Sanders are listed as out for Sunday’s game. Joseph Addai, Charlie Johnson, Clint Session, Pierre Garcon, Brandon King and Eric Foster are questionable. Gary Brackett, Jeff Saturday and Jerraud Powers are probable.

Speed Rush

September 22nd, 2010 - 3:17pm by Gabe HiattOther posts by

Demaryius Thomas summed up the Colts defense in two players.

“Two defensive ends that play,” he said. “The whole defense is fast.”

Head Coach Josh McDaniels took a similar stance.

“They have very disruptive players, which starts with Dwight Freeney and Robert Mathis on the edge — who get to the quarterback plenty and also take the ball away,” he said.

The Broncos on Tuesday signed running back Andre Brown back to the active roster from the practice squad. He spent the first week of the season on the active roster before being waived and signed to the practice squad on Sept. 17.

To make room for the move, the team waived running back Lance Ball.

Brown is a second-year player who spent his rookie season with the New York Giants after being selected in the fourth round of the 2009 NFL Draft.
