Clark, Gordon and Cox Released

November 6th, 2007 - 3:43pm by AndrewOther posts by

Denver’s players got the day off on Tuesday, but three of them will not be back at practice when Wednesday arrives, as the Broncos released wide receiver Brian Clark, defensive back Curome Cox and defensive tackle Amon Gordon.

Gordon had tumbled down the depth chart in recent weeks. After becoming a first-teamer in the preseason and starting the first three regular-season games, he was deactivated for four of thes next five contests, including all three after the Week 6 bye last month. Gordon logged five tackles in games against the Bills and Jaguars and ended up with 16 total tackles in his four games this year, but did not log a sack.

Clark, meanwhile, was waived for the second time this season. The team placed him on waivers on Sept. 29 — one day before the Colts game — then brought him back on Oct. 2 when it waived Domenik Hixon. Clark then played in each of the next four games, catching four passes for 23 yards and returning three kickoffs for 70 yards. He did, however, fumble twice — once on a kickoff return against San Diego and again while stretching out to try and score a last-minute touchdown in Sunday’s loss to the Detroit Lions.

Cox, meanwhile, was inactive for the first time this season on Sunday at Detroit. He played in 36 games — starting five — over the last three years for the Broncos, logging 26 total tackles, a pair of interceptions, two fumble recoveries and 10 passes defensed.

Denver also moved defensive end Jarvis Moss to injured reserve; he fractured his right fibula and tore ankle ligaments in practice last week.

The Broncos filled the roster vacancies by signing wide receiver Taylor Jacobs, a former No. 2 pick of the Washington Redskins in 2003, and three defensive ends — ex-Atlanta Falcons Josh Mallard and Paul Carrington and Larry Birdine, who was most recently on the Titans’ practice squad.

Carrington was waived from the Falcons on Sept. 1, while Mallard was waived from there on Oct. 13. Both Carrington and Mallard played last year in Atlanta under current Broncos defensive-line coach Bill Johnson.

Looking Back on the Packers Game

Pretty frustrating way to lose, in overtime, having played as well as we did, for the most part, defensively. We had a rough first half on defense, but still managed to hold them to 13 points, because we played well in the red zone. We didn’t give up any red zone touchdowns, which is something that we focused on throughout the course of the week– just improving in the red zone and on key third downs. I don’t know that our third down percentage was all that great, but the important third downs when we really needed to get off the field, we were able to do that.

So defensively, I think we played outstanding overall, especially against a really good 6-1 football team. With the exception of a few plays here and there on both sides of the ball, I think we played pretty well. The red zone fumble from our offense was a tough one, and the two big touchdowns, the two deep touchdown passes were pretty big plays that hurt our team. I guess the most frustrating part is that I think we’ve been improving since Day 1, which is something that all teams want to do, just get better week after week. I think that’s something we’ve done, and I even include this last week, even though we lost. We showed major improvements defensively. You look at this defense compared to the defense that played against Jacksonville or even some other teams earlier than that, and we’re a better defense. We’re a better defense now, we just gave up some big plays, which is uncharacteristic of us.

Amon Gordon’s Homecoming

September 19th, 2007 - 2:52am by AndrewOther posts by

Amidst a thicket of Broncos players, team staffers, local media members and children headed for school, Amon Gordon glanced at his surroundings Tuesday morning and smiled.

This was the kickoff event for the construction of the Darrent Williams Teen Center at the Broncos Boys and Girls Club. But for Gordon, it was a homecoming. What he saw around him was his entire path through life — where he’d been, and who he’d become.

The presence of his teammates reflected his present and future as an emerging young defensive tackle, finally establishing his name as an NFL contributor. The teenagers and grammar-school students scurrying about the club, however, reflected his past.

“This is me,” he said.

OTA Day 12: Notes, Photos and Sam Adams

Sam Adams
The newest Bronco had little choice but to don jersey No. 63 for his first organized team activity of the 2007 offseason. All the numbers in the 90s — including jersey No. 95, which he wore in Cincinnati last season — were claimed by his new teammates.

“Sixty-three is a great number,” he said. “My father was 61. There’s no significance.”

But, to say the least, the jersey was a tad snug on the 345-pound defensive tackle.

“As you can see, I had to hold my breath the entire practice, so I won’t be in this (practice jersey),” he said.

But it wasn’t how he looked in a jersey, but how he looked in action, that concerned Head Coach Mike Shanahan.

“He looked pretty good today, even though he didn’t get a lot of reps,” Shanahan said. “He got a few reps, and it looks like he’s been working out. With the offseason conditioning program and summer camp, hopefully there’s no setbacks and he’s ready to go.

Tuesday’s session was Adams’ first since undergoing arthroscopic knee surgery earlier this year, but he appeared to show no ill effects.

“I feel good,” Adams said. “This is a great system to be a part of as a defensive lineman. It’s an attacking front. It allows us to put pressure on the football, whether it be run or pass.”

More Day 12 notes:

… One of the niftier catches of the day belonged to tight end Nate Jackson, who reached back while falling — and actually had one knee on the ground — in order to snag a pass from Darrell Hackney that had passed just behind him …

… Shanahan said that he thought about returning safety Sam Brandon to full team work this week, but opted to wait as the sixth-year veteran returns from two torn knee ligaments. Shanahan said that Brandon should be “full speed” by minicamp, which begins July 9 …
