Broncos Can Clinch AFC West Sunday

November 27th, 2012 - 12:03pm by Gray CaldwellOther posts by

The NFL just released all playoff-clinching scenarios for Week 13, and the Broncos have three ways of locking up the AFC West on Sunday.

A win against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers at Sports Authority Field at Mile High would put the Broncos in the playoffs and cement a second consecutive AFC West title. A San Diego loss would do the same, as would a Denver tie plus a San Diego tie.

Currently, Denver holds a four-game lead in the division — plus the tiebreaker over San Diego, having swept the Chargers — with five games remaining in the regular season.

Regardless, the Broncos aren’t looking ahead.

“We don’t want to worry about all that as much as we want to worry about the Tampa Bay Bucs in all three phases,” Head Coach John Fox said Monday. “That’ll be the mantra when we gather the team back up on Wednesday.”

Below are the other playoff-clinching scenarios for the rest of the NFL this week:

Broncos Continue to Earn Midseason Recognition

November 7th, 2012 - 10:24am by Sam DavisOther posts by

On Tuesday, DenverBroncos.com posted a list of the many accolades the team has received at the halfway point of the season and in weeks prior.

On Wednesday, ESPN.com’s Bill Williamson gave Denver some more recognition as he included a total of 11 Broncos on his All AFC West Midseason Team. The 11 Broncos — five on offense, five on defense and one on special teams — were the most players that Williamson selected from any team in the division.

The list of players include defensive end Elvis Dumervil, defensive tackle Kevin Vickerson, linebackers Von Miller and Wesley Woodyard, cornerback Champ Bailey, tackle Ryan Clady, quarterback Peyton Manning, running back Willis McGahee, receivers Eric Decker and Demaryius Thomas and return man Trindon Holliday.

Holliday was also named the AFC Special Teams Player of the Week on Wednesday for his performance at Cincinnati.

How the West was Won

January 5th, 2012 - 11:01am by Stuart ZaasOther posts by

The Broncos earned their first playoff berth since the 2005 season by virtue of coming out on top of the most closely contested division in the NFL this season.

Three teams finished tied atop the AFC West with 8-8 records and the fourth place team, Kansas City, came in just one game back at 7-9. No other division had fewer than four games separate the top from the bottom.

Denver, Oakland and San Diego were so even-matched throughout the season that it took the third tiebreaker to determine a division champ. With three teams tied, the NFL’s initial tiebreaker is head-to-head record amongst the tied teams. Every team in the division split its games against the other three AFC west clubs, so it was on to the next tiebreaker.

Tiebreaker No. 2 is the win-loss percentage withing division games. Since all four teams finished 3-3 in divisional play, the process moved on to tiebreaker No. 3, which is win-loss percentage in games against common opponents.

Each AFC West team played the four clubs in the NFC North (Chicago, Detroit, Green Bay and Minnesota) and the four members of the AFC East (Buffalo, Miami, New England and N.Y. Jets). Those eight games, along with six AFC West games that each team had in common added up to 14 common opponents between Denver, Oakland and San Diego.

This is the tiebreaker that gave the Broncos the AFC West after the team finished one game better than Oakland and San Diego in this comparison. Denver posted a 7-7 record to Oakland’s and San Diego’s 6-8.

If you are trying to pinpoint specific games that factored into the team’s division title more than others, Denver’s wins over Miami, Chicago and the New York Jets were the difference makers in this tiebreaker. Those also happened to be three of the Broncos’ most improbable victories of the year.

The Broncos and Raiders fared the same against every one of their common opponents with the exception of the Dolphins. Denver overcame a 15-0 deficit late in the fourth quarter to come away with an 18-15 overtime victory, while Oakland lost to Miami 34-14.

Denver earned the advantage over San Diego with wins over Chicago and the New York Jets — both of whom defeated the Chargers. San Diego did come out on top of Buffalo, who Denver lost to, but the wins over the Bears and Jets gave the Broncos a one-game edge in this comparison. Both of those wins also saw Denver overcome late deficits to earn the victories.

Below is a game-by-game comparison of how the three teams fared against common opponents:

Denver: San Diego and Oakland each went 1-1 against the Broncos.
Oakland: Denver and San Diego each went 1-1 against the Raiders.
San Diego: Denver and Oakland each went 1-1 against the Chargers.
Kansas City: Denver, San Diego and Oakland each went 1-1 against the Chiefs.
Chicago: Denver won 13-10, Oakland won 25-20, San Diego lost 31-20.
Detroit: Denver lost 45-10, Oakland lost 28-17 and San Diego lost 38-10.
Green Bay: Denver lost 49-23, Oakland lost 46-16 and San Diego lost 45-38.
Minnesota: Denver won 35-32, Oakland won 27-21 and San Diego won 24-17.
Buffalo: Denver lost 40-13, Oakland lost 38-35 and San Diego won 37-10.
Miami: Denver won 18-15, Oakland lost 34-14, San Diego won 26-16.
New England: Denver lost 41-21, Oakland lost 31-19 and San Diego lost 35-21.
New York Jets: Denver won 17-13, Oakland won 34-24 and San Diego lost 23-20.

Broncos Stay Grounded

Having won five games in a row, and six of their last seven, the Denver Broncos have garnered increased attention from around the nation as they turned their 1-4 start into a 7-5 record.

But despite the additional intensity from outside sources, the team hasn’t let it become a distraction.

“For me, (I want) to consistently be motivated and come out here and work extremely hard and not worry about everything else on the outside — whatever good or bad is said,” quarterback Tim Tebow said. “Just let that be on the outside and focus on things I can control and come in here being a great teammate, work as hard as I can and try to get a little bit better.”

Notebook: Miller, Moore and a Division Test

November 9th, 2011 - 6:14pm by Gray CaldwellOther posts by

NO. 58

Von Miller makes no bones about it — the late Derrick Thomas was his “favorite football athlete of all time.”

And it all started with an interview.

“He said that he looked at playing defensive end as being like a running back, and the offensive linemen were trying to block him from getting to the quarterback,” Miller recalled. “That’s how I look at it. I always thought I was an offensive guy at heart, and I look at it like the offense is trying to stop me from getting to the quarterback. That interview was really what made me fall in love with Derrick Thomas the football player.”

Now Miller wears No. 58, just like the former Kansas City Chiefs linebacker.

AFC West is Wide Open

November 7th, 2011 - 3:05pm by jim_saccomanoOther posts by

The Denver Broncos Sunday posted a stirring come-from-behind 38-24 win over the Oakland Raiders at the Coliseum, better known and forever regarded as the Black Hole.

On the same day that San Diego and Kansas City both lost, the AFC Western Division race is now a three-way tie among those three guys, with the Broncos just one game out.

And forget all the logic about this team, that team……just forget it. It belongs to whichever team winds up first, whether by wins or tiebreakers.

Broncos Could Have a Franchise First

December 10th, 2008 - 9:15am by jim_saccomanoOther posts by

This has been an amazing year for the Denver Broncos and their fans, as everyone who has been watching realizes.

It is all too easy to be picky about many aspects of performance that could be improved upon, but what has emerged as the key factor in the story of the Broncos’ 2008 season is that the team is in first place with a fine 8-5 record despite a staggering injury list that has led to one of the highest number of games played by rookies in team history.

There have been times before when this many rookies played, but it previously happened in rebuilding years, such as 1967 under Head Coach Lou Saban. Although anyone who saw and still remembers that season (as do I) would agree that “building from scratch” would have been a more accurate description than “rebuilding.”

And regarding this year’s record, no apologies are necessary, but kudos are in order.

Every team has a schedule, eight home and eight away, and every team has a record.

And when the standings show you are in first place, that’s where you are.

When you get there with two-thirds of the players who see the most action being first, second or third-year guys, that’s remarkable.
