Fox Talks First Day of Camp

July 26th, 2012 - 4:56pm by Tyler EverettOther posts by

In terms of on-field action, Thursday’s morning practice that officially kicked off the 2012 training camp resembled the work the Broncos did during minicamp and OTA practices in June and July. But unlike the team’s last practice back in mid-June, this morning’s session was packed with fans and television crews who swarmed Dove Valley for the Broncos’ first official practice of the season.

“Our practices in the offseason are closed so it’s exciting,” Head Coach John Fox said. “It’s different. It’s kind of why you play the game.”

Many in the record-setting crowd packed the team’s Dove Valley practice facility for their first glimpse of quarterback Peyton Manning. And according to Fox, Manning was as impressive today as he was during the team’s minicamp and OTA practices.

Training Camp 2012: Day One A.M.

And here we go. The Broncos’ 2012 training camp kicked off Thursday morning to a raucous — and record-setting — crowd at Dove Valley. Officially, 4,372 people gathered around the practice fields to soak in the first session of training camp — a Dove Valley record.

The sky was clear, it was hot — but not too hot, about 80 degrees — and the players were fired up. In other words, the perfect atmosphere to kick off camp.

ROLL CALL

Before we get started, wanted to throw out a little piece of trivia. Or rather, ask you to take a wild guess at the answer.

Who were the first three players to take the field Thursday morning?

The answer will be revealed later on in the blog.

As for attendance, the only player absent from practice was wide receiver Brandon Stokley, who had the flu. Limited in practice today were defensive tackle Justin Bannan (calf) and defensive end Jamie Blatnick (ankle).

WELCOME, NO. 18

The loudest cheers of the day came when quarterback Peyton Manning jogged out from the locker room and made his way onto the field to kick off his first training camp practice as a Bronco.

First Fans in Line

While most of the Rocky Mountain region was asleep, A.J. Pierce, Jordan Clayton, Leonard Delvalle and Dean Mirelez were already in line for the Broncos’ first practice of training camp.

The group arrived at 8 p.m. last night and began forming the line at 2:30 a.m. when the second group of people arrived at the Broncos’ Dove Valley training facility.

Pierce said the key to passing the time until the gates open is to bring some form of entertainment.

“Bring toys to play with,” he advised. “Keep yourself entertained, most importantly. Then your hours go by pretty quick. Other than that it will be a long night.”

Rice Takes: Getting Started

July 26th, 2012 - 7:37am by mike_riceOther posts by

Thankfully, the waiting is over.

Broncos training camp is here and I am excited as I have been going into camp as I have been in a long, long time.

There are several reasons.

1) THE BRONCOS HAVE SOLID LEADERSHIP. I think of the changes John Elway has made in his first year-plus on the job and I am astounded at how far the Broncos have come in such a short time. Starting with Elway’s hiring John Fox as the head coach right through his ability to land Peyton Manning, Elway has shown himself to be, at the very least, a more than capable executive. And I still think there are better things to come.

That doesn’t always happen when a Hall of Fame player makes the transition to the front office. Elway said he wanted to run the Broncos and put in the necessary work to do that in a way that would get them back to the top of the NFL. He is off to a great start. If anyone thought that Elway wouldn’t be willing to put in the time and effort his job demands, he has shown those concerns to be completely unfounded.
