Wolfe Excited to Get Started

April 27th, 2012 - 6:45pm by Kenny LeganOther posts by

As the dust settled after the first round of the 2012 NFL Draft, former Cincinnati defensive tackle Derek Wolfe remained at home after not receiving a call from an NFL head coach welcoming him to the team.

While that might be the norm for many NFL prospects, it is anything but that for Wolfe.

2012 NFL Draft Day Two Coverage

April 27th, 2012 - 5:00pm by Gray CaldwellOther posts by

The second day of the 2012 NFL Draft is just about underway. The Broncos currently hold two picks in the second round — No. 36 and No. 57 overall — and one pick in the third — No. 87 overall.

This will be different than yesterday’s first-round live blog format, and more like our gameday live blogs.

While we won’t live blog each pick, this blog will essentially serve as a central location for all of our coverage of today’s picks — including top stories on the player, blogs from each player’s conference call with the media, photos, audio, video and more — and a hub for all of your comments this evening.

The St. Louis Rams are on the clock first with the 33rd overall pick — the Broncos are coming up shortly.

5:12 p.m. MDT: Looks like Baltimore’s pick is in, which means the Broncos are now on the clock at pick No. 36.

5:19 p.m. MDT: Terrell Davis is announcing the Broncos’ pick — and it’s defensive tackle Derek Wolfe from Cincinnati.

BEARCAT TO BRONCO; WOLFE TOP PICK: With the 36th pick in the 2012 NFL Draft, the Broncos selected defensive tackle Derek Wolfe from the University of Cincinnati. Read more here.

2012 NFL Draft First Round Live Blog

April 26th, 2012 - 6:00pm by Gray CaldwellOther posts by

Finally, we’re just about 15 minutes away from the start of the 2012 NFL Draft.

It’s been a long day of anticipation, and it might get a little longer with the Broncos not set to pick until No. 25. But from past experience, when the draft gets going, it tends to go more quickly than originally anticipated.

Stay tuned to this blog — the plan is to keep it updated pick-by-pick until the Broncos are on the clock. At that point, we’ll turn our focus to providing as much content as possible on the player the Broncos select, including a top story, photo gallery, quotes from the pick, audio of his conference call and plenty more.

Head Coach John Fox is expected to meet the media at the end of the first round, and we’ll have coverage of that as well, including a live stream of the press conference.

Watching the Mocks 2012: Final Edition

April 26th, 2012 - 12:40pm by Gray CaldwellOther posts by

We’ve only looked at mock drafts across the Internet once since the end of the season — early in the process on February 13.

By today, many outlets have released their final mocks as the first round kicks off tonight at 6 p.m. MDT.

Without further ado, here are who the “experts” believe could be headed to Denver.

NFL Network’s Mike Mayock: Dontari Poe, DT, Memphis
“I’ve been trying to find a spot for him since pick No. 11 with the Chiefs,” Mayock writes. “The Broncos need a guy who can come in and play inside. At 350 pounds with movement skills like Haloti Ngata, Poe is the guy. On third down, when most defensive tackles are out of the game, Poe will be at his most effective.”

Video of Mayock discussing the pick can be found here.

Predict the Picks and Win

April 25th, 2012 - 2:40pm by Stuart ZaasOther posts by

Want to win a football autographed by the Broncos’ 2012 Draft Class?

Elway announced the contest via his Twitter account this morning after the Broncos’ front office wrapped up its draft preparations.

The fan that guesses the most Broncos draft choices in the 2012 draft will win that prize. To enter, tweet your picks using #BroncosPicks. To be eligible for the prize, all of the guesses must be submitted via one tweet. In the event of a tie, whoever submits the tweet first will be the winner.

Last names of draftees are fine, and the order they are listed in does not matter. You can guess as many names as you can fit in one tweet, but remember, the Broncos are scheduled to draft seven players.

We are getting closer to the draft. I love it.

What will the Broncos do? Will they trade out of the first round? Will they stay put or even try to move up?

The closer we get, the more excited I get.

My colleagues at DenverBroncos.com continue to do an excellent job previewing some of the top players at each position and I encourage you to check out those draft previews if you haven’t done so already.

DEFENSIVE LINE

Like many people, I really thought the Broncos would draft a defensive lineman last year. I think the same thing in 2012. It gets interesting when one thinks about when the Broncos might address this position.

There is no doubt the countdown is on. Teams have made their moves in free agency. The shell of the preseason schedule is out and the regular season schedule won’t be far behind.

Bring on the draft.

I hope you’ve been able to keep up with the fine draft previews here on DenverBroncos.com. My colleagues have done an excellent job highlighting some of the players who figure prominently at each position. Recently, they put the spotlight on running backs and linebackers.
