Mays’ Unique Flight Plan

When free agency began, Joe Mays admits he had doubts he would end up back in Denver.

“I wasn’t sure what was going to happen, just not knowing what to expect, not knowing what direction the team wanted to go in,” he said Thursday.

So the linebacker began visiting other teams. Fresh off a trip to New Orleans, he hopped on a plane headed to Washington before connecting to Indianapolis.

Mays, who typically turns off his phone as soon as he gets on a plane — “I usually do that and follow directions,” he smiled — kept it on this time.

And it rang.

Stokley Signed

The Broncos have signed wide receiver Brandon Stokley, the team announced on Monday. The 14th-year player rejoins the Broncos after catching 108 passes for 1,490 yards in three seasons with the team (2007-09).

“Stokely’s my guy,” wide receiver Eric Decker said at a press conference Monday morning. “He’s a savvy veteran. He’s been around the league for a while, so you can learn a lot from a guy like that.”

For his career, Stokley has appeared in 131 games and hauled in 339 passes for 4,680 yards with 34 touchdowns.

He reunites with quarterback Peyton Manning after the pair spent four seasons together in Indianapolis (2003-06). Stokley was a consistent target for Manning in Indianapolis, catching more than 40 passes in 2004 and 2005, the two full seasons he played for the Colts. In 2004, Stokley posted his most productive season as a pro, setting career highs in receptions (68), yards (1,077) and touchdowns (10). The duo earned Super Bowl rings together during the 2006 season.
