Training Camp 2012: Day Five A.M.

July 30th, 2012 - 12:09pm by Gray CaldwellOther posts by

For the third straight day, the Broncos ran onto the practice fields at Dove Valley wearing full pads. And for the third straight day, the team had a fast, physical, productive practice.

Without further ado, let’s get to Monday morning’s practice recap.

ROLL CALL

Safety Quinton Carter (knee) and tackle Orlando Franklin (concussion) did not participate in Monday’s practice. Defensive tackle Justin Bannan (calf) was on the field for the session, but was just observing in shorts and his jersey. Cornerback Joshua Moore left practice with a right hamstring injury. Cornerback Omar Bolden got “dinged,” Head Coach John Fox said, and the team will evaluate him.

Defensive end Jamie Blatnick (ankle) practiced for the first time during camp.

Chris Kuper continued taking more and more reps with the first-unit offensive line. For the majority of practice, he was in at right guard.

PLAYMAKERS

  • Wide receiver Brandon Stokley got his day started off right. During individual drills — even before the stretch period — he made a nice grab that warranted a high-five from Demaryius Thomas and a cheer from the crowd. But that was hardly his only highlight.

During one-on-ones between receivers and cornerbacks, quarterback Peyton Manning found Stokley for two quick catches. When the offense switched to 7-on-7s, Manning found Stokley two more times back-to-back, including a diving catch on the sideline that garnered more cheers. His other notable catch of the day came during team drills. Manning dropped back and was immediately under pressure as the defense came with a blitz. The veteran quarterback got the ball away, sending it directly into Stokley’s arms in the end zone for a touchdown — much to the delight of the crowd, and the rest of the offense.

Former Broncos Take In Practice

July 29th, 2012 - 7:59pm by Tyler EverettOther posts by

A trio of former Broncos who starred on the defensive side of the ball attended Thursday afternoon’s training camp practice. Safety Brian Dawkins, who retired this offseason, was joined by a pair of Denver Broncos Ring-of-Fame linebackers in Karl Mecklenburg and Tom Jackson on the sidelines today in Dove Valley.

“Well, I think it’s great,” Head Coach John Fox said. “These guys were great players and have a lot of pride, much like all our fans here in Denver. Bringing back the alumni, they always have good messages for the guys because they did win a couple of championships and had great careers so these young guys have learned from them.”

Mecklenburg, a 12th round selection in the 1983 draft, has taken in the past two days of camp as a voluntary coach, working with the pass-rushers.

Finding the quarterback was one of the former linebacker’s specialties during his 12-year career. He notched 79 sacks en route to six Pro Bowl nods.

Mecklenburg, a force on five division-title winning Broncos teams, said it felt great to be welcomed back to Bronco Country, adding that he hopes to see more former players around Dove Valley during the next few weeks.

Training Camp 2012: Day Three P.M.

July 28th, 2012 - 7:58pm by Sam DavisOther posts by

On a cool and overcast Saturday night, the Broncos finished their third day of training camp with an hour and twenty minute walkthrough.

Below are some quick hits from this evening’s session.

WELCOME TO DENVER

The newest member of the Denver Broncos, safety Anthony Perkins, watched the walkthrough from behind the defense. The Northglenn, Colo., native got some welcomed news on his way to watch the Broncos’ morning practice.

Perkins worked out with the team during the rookie minicamp earlier this summer and has kept himself in shape since then, anticipating an opportunity.

“I was comfortable with how it went,” Perkins said. I thought it went well. I thought I moved around really well. I got good feedback from the organization. I just wanted to stay in shape and make sure I stayed ready just in case.”

After working out with Offensive Line Coach Dave Magazu’s son in Boulder, Colo., Perkins was headed to Dove Valley to check out the facilities when his phone rang.

“I got the call when I was about 15 minutes away,” Perkins said of finding out he was signed. “It was a little unreal.”

Perkins, who still watched the morning practice, stood next to and talked with Secondary Coach Sam Garnes throughout the evening walkthrough, trying to absorb as much as possible given his late start.

“At this level, every detail matters,” Perkins said. “You’ve got to be detailed in every single thing you do. Practices like that, you’ve got to be good at the details. I’m kind of playing catch-up right now, trying to get into the playbook and making sure that I’m able to be as detailed as these guys are that are practicing out there.”
