Taking Care of Our Own Business

December 28th, 2012 - 11:17am by Eric Decker

It’s Week 17, and I think there are a lot of things to stay focused on this week. There’s just the fact that we control our own destiny. It’s a division game. The last one at home. We’ve got to take care of business in order to set ourselves up where we want to be in the playoffs.

We’ve got the Chiefs Sunday, and they have a really tough defense. We know that. We were in a lot of third-and-longs last time against them, and I think that’s our focus, to make sure that we’re successful on first and second downs. Because when you play a good team or good defense, you’re going to hurt yourself by playing behind the chains. That’s the thing, make sure we execute, get better at what we do and score touchdowns. Again, that’s something we’ve been focusing on for a while. When we get to the red area, instead of kicking field goals, score touchdowns.

We know where we are record-wise and understand our opportunity at hand. I think naturally as a human you’re curious, so if they show scores of other games I might look, but I’m not going to go out of my way. But again, that will take care of itself if we take care of what we need to on Sunday. That’s all that needs to be said. Go to work and make sure we play well.

RH, I really like your insight on the previous blog. I think you nailed it…along with the feedback from the others.

This team has shown us that the coaching and personnel guys (ie. rumor has it, Elway hand picking 20 of the players himself since getting on board, maybe not all on the field yet, but nonetheless putting pieces together) have created a unique core and complementary supporting cast. A great time and enjoyable season to witness.

    Thanks Broncos…Go Get Em!

    Thank you.
I think people don’t realize how seamless this team can change from 4-3 to 3-4 to 3-3-5 (nickle).
What often looks like a 4-3 on third down is really a 3-4 with Miller at the line and rushing. Some will still calls this a 4-3 and claim all the guys on the line are rushing so it’s a 4-3. In reality, the scheme is a 3-4 because of the way that Vick/Bannan and Wolfe/Unrein take on the guys/gaps in front of them.

sndvl, to address what you said in the previous blog.

By far the best way to counteract the NE extreme hurry up offense…get this…doesn’t even involve the players on the field.
It is the twelve man. To run that extreme hurry up, Brady has to call everything from the line of scrimmage. The louder the crowd, the more difficult it is and that will slow them down.

I also suspect that BB has the answer to this, as he always seems to. The answer isn’t difficult but it takes a lot of practice and the whole offense has to be on board. They would have to have made a set of hand signals or side line cue cards. The hand signals don’t work for the Oline guys though, there will still need to be verbal communication to them.

Anyway. For all you in Denver that attend these games (I live in CA). Get loud, really loud and you can drastically change the way NE plays. More so than when playing a normal offense.

P.S. This is a major part in how the Seahawks beat NE. The other part was the very very physical Seahawk defense.

  8. Royalbroncofan1 says:

The Seahawks also have one of the best stadiums designed to retain sound…. very loud at their home.

Royal – I was talking about the Cincy vs Duke game last night. Wolfe’s Bearcats won a good game.

  10. OTbroncos says:

I agree about the TE coverage issues, and I also think that Trevathan could help in that area, but as mentioned, it will be difficult to make proper substitutions when facing the hurry up..

Ok thanks OT – I watched the basketball bearcats.
