Ready for a Monday Night Showdown

October 13th, 2012 - 3:43pm by Von Miller

This is a huge game, especially coming off a loss last week. You definitely want to win all your division games. It’s tough, but we definitely want to get ourselves in a tie for first place with a win in our division to give us a better chance to go to the playoffs.

All weeks are important, but this week is definitely important because we don’t want to go to the bye week with a bad taste in our mouth.

It’s always a challenge going against the Chargers. We won one last year and they won one. I’m sure we’re going to go in there and they’re going to try their best to beat us.

Being a divisional opponent, we’re pretty familiar with them and in turn, they’re pretty familiar with us. It’ll be a good game. We’ve had another good week of preparation and hopefully we can get it done on Monday.

I love playing on Monday Night. It’s the only game on. I used to watch Monday Night Football when I was a kid, so playing on it is a dream come true.

Gig em!

RH709 Brooking did get a concussion, but he is active to play tomorrow according to the Broncos.

  2. strandoftds82 says:

And Brooking is 37 years old. Thats up there for a football player, a concussion is no joke at his age.

Peyton Manning was signed to a 5 year, $96M contract, with only the first year gauranteed. He has to pass a physical each year to make the next year guaranteed. In today’s world of sports contracts, when dealing with a superstar of Manning’s stature, this type of protection afforded to the team, is completely unheard of.

Mario Williams, conversely, signed a 6 year, $96M contract, with $50M fully gauranteed. This means the Bills are on the hook for at least $50M, no matter what happens (or doesnt happen) to Williams. This contract was the biggest ever given to a defensive player in the history of the NFL, including all the elite CB’s out there.

Both of these contracts represent a large portion of their respective teams salary cap, but the major difference is the importance of the QB position. Both players were coming off injuries that caused them to miss all or part of last season, Manning with his neck, and Williams wih a torn pectorial muscle, and only Manning’s contract contains any protection to the team if he isn’t able to return to form. So far, Mario Williams has been completely non-existent on the field, while Manning has clearly shown how he can effect a game single handedly. It seems clear as day to me that Denver made the right choice on how to allocate their resources.

“What’s in doubt is whether other Broncos are worthy of being on the same field with Manning. That should be where the sense of urgency is born. If Fox, Dumervil or Thomas wastes a veteran quarterback’s brilliance, maybe there should be no Plan B for any of them.” -Mark Kiszla

    100% agree OT!!!!

    Prediction Re-Post:
    Broncos 34
    Chargers 24

  7. OrangeTsunami says:

And to further my comment, had we signed Mario Williams, it would have given us two DE’s with a torn pectorial muscle in their recent history. Admittedly, I’m no doctor, but I have heard several people in the medical field say that broken bones actually can heal to become stronger than before the break, but I’ve never heard anyone say the same thing about soft tissue.

  8. strandoftds82 says:

    OUCH!!

  9. broncomatt76 says:

Start fast, no turnovers, and the Broncos will win! 34-17

  10. Zach says:

Good luck this week Von, I feel like you guys are just a bounce here or one bounce there away from 5-0. Not once have you been blown out. Lets finally get a win in SD!

  11. wolfedom says:

GO BRONCOS!!!!!! We are way past the salary paid to the players we have. Doom is making more money than Peyton this year and I can’t say that he has added to the victories as much as Peyton. That said, I wouldn’t want to trade Doom for Williams or anyone else Defense needs to gain each others trust and work together. When that happens the defense will gell and players will concentrate on their own responsibilities. jmho

  12. tlcat06 says:

Wolfe… Really? Dumervil makes more than 18 million this year?

  13. broncsbomber66 says:

Helli everybody….Jyst stopping by to say Im super pumped for tomorrows game. I’ll have to DVR it so I will ignore everybody and their mom tomorrow evening. Hope everybody has a good day..Raiders beating theFalcons….WTF…are they out if their “Falcon” mind.

  14. strandoftds82 says:

It’s early in the season. No need to panic.

  15. strandoftds82 says:

    HaHaHa! Very funny!

  16. strandoftds82 says:

No, Doom doesn’t make that much a year now does he? hmmmm

  17. wolfedom says:

I understand that Doom is making 19 mil this year. I could be wrong, I was once in 1963.

  18. tlcat06 says:

LOL!!!!!!!!!! That is awesome. I now must go investigate this.

  19. RH709 says:

Doom is not making that much. btw just cause doom doesnt have a bunch of sacks doesnt mean he isnt doing his part. Doom just a few weeks ago was leading the league in pressures. He is fine and sacks will come. relax people.

  20. wolfedom says:

RH, I didn’t say that Doom wasn’t doing his part. You need to relax and read the entire post. I said “I wouldn’t rade doom for Williams or anyone else” just saying

  21. still1972 says:

is the game score blog contest still going? or is the one by Grey caldwell now the only one? just wondering cause the only results i see are from the Grey caldwell one. regardless,
    *official game score prediction*
    Broncos 34-Chargers 27

  22. James says:

Hey von how bout an autographed Jersey man? Haha gig em!

  23. tlcat06 says:

Wolfe, you are so my hero! Because now I can bring that up when people complain about Peyton making $18 mil. Wow.

  24. tlcat06 says:

Wolfe, why are Dumervil’s bonuses included against cap space? Everywhere else says he gets 14$ million this year.

  25. Bronco_Turtle says:

    http://profootballtalk.nbcsports.com/2010/07/23/six-year-615-million-for-dumervil/

This shows Dumervil’s Salary at a Gaurantee of only 12m for this season, not sure if it’s accurate but each site shows different numbers…

  26. wolfedom says:

Cat, I’m not sure how all the money stuff works. You would have to be an attorney as well as an accountant to make sense of it all. I just don’t think its fair to say that Peyton makes so much that it disables the team. Just not fair in my opinion.

  27. wolfedom says:

Whatever the numbers show, I think they are both worth the money. We could be absorbing Mario’s salary now and that would be a shame. At least our guys are making a big contribution. imo

  28. Bronco_Turtle says:

Anybody watching the space jump on Discovery? I have it on the little TV in front of the two Big ones that I have Games on!!! :)

  29. tlcat06 says:

I agree, Wolfe and it is very confusing. AB said that maybe the bonuses count against the salary cap now. Because with all his bonuses, he’s supposed to make 18,948,000 in 2012.

  30. tlcat06 says:

    I just finished watching the Browns win (;

  31. Bronco_Turtle says:

Wolfe, The way I have to look at it is like this… Tom Brady has started in Five Superbowls, and this year took a reduction in Base salary from over 16M to less than 1m in order for his Organization to Stack his Defense with fresh Talent, Manning has always made it clear that he feels he should be the highest paid player in the league, and he does have the biggest contract for this season from what I can find to read. He said openly he wants a ring and that is why he chose Denver but I can’t believe that is true if he still required a max contract…

I’m not complaining, and I haven’t been down on Peyton as a player, he is fun to watch and we are fortunate to have his talent but if he was really concerned about the team’s W/L and the talent he has around him he would be willing to Pull a Brady and play for less… Just my oppinion and the way it makes sense to me and another reason why I will always have Brady>Manning in my Pantheon of QB’s

  32. wolfedom says:

I see your point Turtle, but you know Brady has been with the same team for a long time and was able to assess his teams talent. I’m sure Peyton was told that we had the talent in place or he may not have chosen us. We still have salary cap space and I didn’t see any moves to improve our team. That seems to say that we were satisfied with our players. With our center being hurt, Koop being out and, in my opinion, our mlb position being very weak , the coaches judgement may be suspect. I don’t think Peyton’s salary has anything to do with acquiring more talent. We will just have to wait and see.

  33. tlcat06 says:

I say, let’s see how Brooking does at MLB instead of Mays and see if we can fill that hole that way.

BT, tell me one more QB of Peyton’s stature that joined another team after playing 13 for a different one and MADE the team he was joining put clauses in his contract to protect the team for the future? Name one. We still have 11.1 mill in cap space. Peyton’s money is NOT hurting our team right now.

    PLUS, read this: http://profootballtalk.nbcsports.com/2012/03/12/broncos-pitch-for-peyton-buoyed-by-27-million-cap-carryover/

  34. Bronco_Turtle says:

It’s not just the money. The amount of time we waited to sign Peyton left us with Free Agent acquistions like Brookings, Leonhard, Dressen and Tamme… I’m sick of the Veteran Leadership arguement also when it comes to Brookings and Leonhard because to the best of my knowledge neither has ever even played in a Superbowl, meaning neither has ever been on a Conference Championshiop Level Team… Those are the slow aging vets that you need to have! Winners, not just guys that have been banging around the league for multiple years. Talent matters and we didn’t add alot of it to our Roster outside the Draft and PM this season.

I say Cut Brookings and let Irving and Johnson get in there and bang some heads. Until we get a Real DT that can stop the guards from getting to our LB’s it won’t matter who you put in there I don’t think, you can’t play behind your own side of the line of Scrimmage and ever expect to be a successful football team

  35. OrangeTsunami says:

Drew Brees is the highest player in the NFL, fresh off signing a 5 year, $100M contract, with a record $60M in gaurantees. When looking at NFL contracts, you MUST look at how much is gauranteed, which is paramount in properly evaluating them. In the NFL, unlike in MLB, a player can be cut or released at anytime and the team in no longer on the hook for any part of the players contract that is not gauranteed.

Comparing Brady’s contract restructure to Manning’s contract is impossible, since you can’t “rework” a contract that has yet to begin. Brady signed a 4 year extension, worth $72M, making him equally paid as Manning. Peyton didn’t ask for more just to be higher paid than Brady. When Brady reworked his contract, he is getting the same amount of money, just paid differently, to free up cap space this season. He is not taking a pay cut, and the move actually will put his cap hit over $21M for 2013 and 2014. It’s a bit of a head scratcher why they did it, as they didn’t need to, especially going to the draft for defense, where there is a rookie wage scale. It will be interesting how NE will cope with Brady’s huge cap hits over the next two seasons…

  36. OrangeTsunami says:

    *highest paid player

  37. tlcat06 says:

Also, if Peyton wanted more money he would’ve gone to Tennessee. They were willing to pay him more than we were.

  38. tlcat06 says:

LOL! Wow. Tamme, Dreessen and Porter didn’t sign with us until we had Peyton if I remember correctly. Plus, we were dealing with what to do with DJ Williams. Plus, those guys are younguns and Fox likes veterans. Not saying I was happy with Brookings or Leonhard signings, but we did need some veteran leadership. Tell me a guy that’s been to the SB that was available before Peyton made his mind for us to pick up BT.

  39. Bronco_Turtle says:

Haha… Sean Peyton was the ‘Highest’ Coach OT… all hopped up on Hydrocodone (sp)! Thanks for the clarification OT but the overall all point I guess I should have emphasized is that QB’s like Elway and Brady restructured as players to help the team, Peyton has never turned down a raise to sign an extra stud has he? He got a Max Contract that Brees exceeded. I think the Hypocracy of the whole situation is Elway taking a pay cut to bring in the likes of Neil Smith and Alfred Williams should have set a strong precedent for not overpaying the QB position…

That Crazy guy JUMPED FROM 120,000+ Feet…. CRAZY!!! He’s trying to break the sound barrier

  40. Bronco_Turtle says:

See you guys tonight… I’m taking hunters back up the Mountain. Felt odd to have 2 PM Sunday and No Bronco Football

    B-R-O-N-C-O-S BRONCOS BRONCOS BRONCOS!!!

  41. tlcat06 says:

BT you don’t take a pay cut the season you join a team. Brady and Elway have never played for a different team. This conversation is appropriate for next season, but not this one. IMO

  42. OrangeTsunami says:

Just remeber, you can’t make the money disappear. The Pats are getting approximately $6M of cap relief for 2012, which is going to add approximately $3M onto Brady’s cap number for 2013 and 2014. It sounds better than what it really is. If we get into a salary cap bind, I have no doubt Peyton will rework his contract to give us some relief for that year.

  43. tlcat06 says:

And we still have 11.1 million dollars in cap pace so it’s a MOOT point!

  44. OrangeTsunami says:

But I agree, you really need to be a lawyer and accountant to fully understand the salary cap and players contracts, which I have neither. It makes it especially difficult for us fans to piece it all together, when there are varying numbers being reported by different sources online. Feel free to correct me, but I’m pretty confident that any cap reduction in a players contract, would add an equal addition in subsequent years.

  45. strandoftds82 says:

We’re gonna come away with a win in S.D. Monday night.

  46. OrangeTsunami says:

Raiders and Chiefs last today. Now we just have to win on Monday, and it will be a perfect week for the AFC West!

  47. OrangeTsunami says:

  48. tlcat06 says:

I’m looking forward to tomorrow, but I have to admit it’s been nice watching football without anxiety today. LOL

  49. camharland says:
