Trying To Get Back To The Top

February 12th, 2009 - 10:48pm by mike_rice

As I was watching the Super Bowl, my thoughts drifted to ten years ago, when the Broncos were showing they were the best in the NFL.

I wondered how far the Broncos might be from again scaling to the top of the league and hoisting another Lombardi Trophy. I realized that by looking at the Steelers and Cardinals, one can get at least some idea of how close, or how far, the Broncos might be from their third NFL title.

CULTURE OF WINNING

This is obvious with the Steelers. They were great decades ago. And they are still great. Sure, they have had some lean years but no team is great every year.

The Steelers personify toughness. And more often than not, they win. No team has more Super Bowl titles than Pittsburgh’s six. Enough said.

I remember leading up to the Super Bowl, one of the national commentators, it might have been John Madden, was asked what comes to mind first when one mentions the Arizona Cardinals? The answer the person gave was, “Futility.”

For years, the Cardinals were the doormat of the NFL. See them on the schedule and a team automatically figured it would win.

No more. Head coach ken Whisenhunt changed the culture of the Cardinals from one of futility to one of winning. The Cardinals are just now beginning to reap the rewards of that change.

I don’t think the Broncos need to develop a culture of winning. There is a standard of excellence that is in place and that’s one reason people are so upset at the 24-24 record over the past three seasons.

Furthermore, new head coach Josh McDaniels comes from a winning atmosphere in New England. He has seen up close what it takes to win at the highest level and he has been an integral part of that winning. From what he has said, he is comfortable with that being the expectation.

A QUARTERBACK THAT GETS IT DONE WHEN IT COUNTS

Ben Roethlisberger did it again. Seriously, the guy came up huge time after time after time all season long. He guided the Steelers through the toughest schedule in the NFL and then capped it off with a clutch drive to win Super Bowl XLIII.

Arizona’s Kurt Warner dusted off the magic carpet and took the Cardinals on a magical ride. Sure, he had some rough patches during the year but he was absolutely fantastic in the playoffs. And the way he led the Cardinals back to take the lead in the fourth quarter of the Super Bowl showed how good he is.

In this area, I think the Broncos are on the right track. Ultimately, nobody knows how good Jay Cutler will be. But there can’t be much debate about his incredible talent. His career is only three years old. Let’s not forget how long it took John Elway to figure it out.

I’m not saying Cutler will prove to be as good as Elway was. Time will tell. But I do believe Cutler is on the right track to develop into a great NFL quarterback that gets it done when the game is on the line.

A SHUT-DOWN DEFENSE

Again, not much needs to be said about the Steelers. They consistently have one of the best, if not THE best, defense in the NFL.

The Cardinals gave up over 400 points this season. But they were terrific in the playoffs. They made Falcons’ quarterback Matt Ryan look like a rookie. Then they picked off Carolina’s Jake Delhomme five times. And they withstood an Eagles’ rally to get to the Super Bowl.

This is the area where the Broncos need the most improvement. There is no doubt the talent level has to get better. There is no doubt the Broncos have to be tougher. And some continuity on the defensive coaching staff would probably help, too.

THE “IT” FACTOR

This is the hardest factor to quantify. It is one of those things that fans recognize when it’s there. The Steelers always seem to have “it.” They find a way to get it done. They make the big plays at the big times. They seem to be a unified group working together towards a common goal. And they seem to have fun doing it.

Without question the Cardinals had “it” this season. No one considered them a serious Super Bowl contender. Yet they kept grinding away. They battled through adversity. They won when it counted.

To me, this area is to be determined for the Broncos. With the latest move to make Brian Xanders the general manager, the hierarchy in the front office seems to be in place. Clearly, the new coaching staff is in place. Now they must retool the roster, install the systems and then see what results on the field.

Am I saying the Broncos are on the brink of a Super Bowl championship? No. But I am saying in today’s NFL, they might not be as far as some people think.

Time will tell.

What do you think? How far are the Broncos from returning to the group of elite teams in the NFL?

Thanks for sharing your thoughts.

Best,
Mike

MONODONO you have WAAAAAY too much time on your hands. Go out and do somethin with your life.

  3. m.c. the great says:

All of this free agent talk is disturbing. Teams dont get good and stay good through picking up players other teams dont want in free agency. You build through the draft. Thats were we have gotten our best talent from on the team. Free agency should be used to find players to fit a role for a short amount of time and a small amount of cash.

With that said I say Bring in my favorite player Fred taylor since he is willing to take less money. and it would really be a win-win situation. That way we can get top talent in the draft for our defense.

I would like for us to draft a safety. Im liking william Moore from Mizzou He can help out on the run game and pass coverage. We should be able to get him in the 4th or 5th round. A real steal.

I say go MLB in the first round. with either maualuga, or Aaron Curry. Simply because MLB seem to be able to come in and have an immediate impact on the team. Then go D-line in the second and third.

  5. 07elway says:

Ha, I guess I kind of contradicted myself a bit up there about the RBs. I said we didn’t need another RB then said I don’t see all of the ones we have staying with us. So…

monodono – by no means was I suggesting or hinting that we should keep Pittman, Hall, Young or Boyd. However, if Torain can get healthy and stay that way I’d say he’s our guy. But we do need some healthy backups as well like I mentioned earlier.

And 2champ does have alot of great insight, points and ideas… the guy knows his football.

    With faith…
    GO BRONCOS in ’09!!!!

  6. 07elway says:

    ANYONE BUT TANK JOHNSON…. AHHHH!!!!

That guy has issues… he may be a good football player but this game goes beyond what happens on the field. He’s a no-good Cowboy I tell you, we do not need someone with such a bad rep like he does. Sorry, but this guy is a BIG N-O!!!!

    With faith…
    GO BRONCOS in ’09!!!!

    Mike,

The photo at the top with the Lombardi trophy looks somewhat elusive at this point, but as you mentioned… time will tell. Looking towards the future of the Team, I’m optomistic about our chances in the next couple of years. We have young and talented players, who need a strong sense of direction. This seemed to be missing for the last couple of years. Jake Plummers story on Shanahan confirmed that things had gone somewhat astray. I appreciated Mike Shanahans effort over the years & always felt that we were never too far from getting back to the big game w/ Mike in our corner. Unfortunately, we developed a false sense of security that never materialized 10 yrs later. Coach Josh McDaniels was a well proven OC, who was ready to take on the next step as a HC in the NFL. Owner Pat Bowlen made a great move to sign a coach who will have a significant impact with the Denver Broncos. His efforts to assemble a strong coaching staff have not gone unnoticed. The efforts to clean house have already begun and the Draft will again produce some high quality talented aquisitions for our Team. The free agency market may produce some key aquisitions…. we’ll see. When you look at the Steelers… you see a team that has done a great job throughout the years of building thru the Draft. In addition, they’ve never moved away from the slogan that “Defense wins Championships”. Remember the Broncos ascent to their first Super Bowl in ’78 – was mainly due to our great Orange Crush defense. As fans, we will see what the new staff does and what they do to make us a strong contender again. We definitely have our work cut out for us, but no reason we cannot get back into the running for the most coveted trophy of all sports…… The Lombardi Trophy.

    GO BRONCOS !!!!!

WOW READING ALL THESE COMMENTS IS FUN
I WANT TO GET IN THE FUN TOO

HERE IS WHAT I THINK THE WE SHOULD DO

1ST-GET A SAFETY IN FA, THIS WAY WE DONT NEED TO DRAFT A SAFETY IN THE EARLY ROUNDS
JERMAINE PHILLIPS, MIKE BROWN OR ATOGWE OSHIOMOGHO(I WOULD PREFER SIGNING THIS GUY OUT OF ALL OF THEM)

2ND-SIGN BART SCOTT OR SUGGS OR MAYBE EVEN LEWIS WHICH EVER ONE WHOGETS RELEASED. IMAGINE HAVING ONE OF THESE GUYS TEAMED UP WITH WILLIAMS AND WOODYARD(I BELIVE HE WILL START)

3RD-IF WERE GOING TO BE PLAYING A 3-4 D PEPPERS WILL NOT BE ANY NEED FOR US AND IF WE PLAY A 4-3 HE WILL NOT WANT TO COME. SO HERES OUR OPTION TO FIX OUR HORRIBLE D-LINE SIGN. SIGN HAYNESWORTH AND DRAFT B.J. RAJI OR BRIAN ORAKPO.

4TH-IF WE SIGN HAYNESWORTH(THATS A HUGE IF) DRAFT A DE IN THE SECOND ROUND

5TH-SIGN DEUCE McALLISTER AND DRAFT A RB IN THE 3RD ROUND

WELL THATS IT FOR WHAT I GOT TO SAY
TELL ME WHAT YOU GUYS THINK

  9. 831_Broncos_Fan says:

FOR ALL YOU BLY HATERS YOU GOT YOUR WISH THEY FINALLY REALESD HIM. :(

  10. Jack_Fan says:

Ok, I’ll jump into this a lil late…

Monodono got smacked down by Rice for being a fan with NO life… AWESOME!!!

As for the off-season moves. I hate to say I TOLD YOU, but I FREAKING TOLD YOU!!!

I said there would be massive cuts by this staff. I said there would be 6 new starters on D. You people said “NO Jack, your dreamin”.

I also said they’d go after a couple 1st teir free agents at the Saftety (phillips) and Defensive End (canty). I said they’d cut robertson to help pay for them… Guess I was wrong on that too!

I’ll also call that they go either Raji or Maualuga with pick 1 and either DT or LB in round 2.

    Love,

    Jack

P.S. I did predict Bly would be gone by now… So far I’m wrong. But I believe he will be beat out by any other CB in camp and he will get his long deserved pink slip!

  11. Jack_Fan says:

HAHAHAHA!!! BLY GETS THE PINK SLIP TODAY!!!

This staff DOES know what they are doing! How about a going away song for Ms. Bly.

NANANANA NANANANA HEY HEEEY GOOD BYE!!!!!

All you Bly lovers will understand why they did this when you see his replacement actually MAKE tackles!!!

Monodono and others, please stop whining about me picking on this EX-Bronco!

    Love,

    Jack

    I KNOW DEFENSE!!!

  12. twiztedbronco says:

Now with Bly gone I think my top 3 FA picks are gold. If you missed it:

S 2 Oshiomogho Atogwe UFA St. Louis
CB 13 Ronald Bartell Jr. UFA 4 6-1/205 Central Michigan St. Louis
DT 9 Grady Jackson UFA 12 6-2/345 Atlanta

  13. RSH says:

Grady Jackson is old and has another Bronco defensive lineman bust written all over him. Atogwe and Barterll Jr. could be good pickups at the right price, but no extreme and outrageous contracts for those two.

  14. tnalen66 says:

I agree G Jackson is too old. I do think we should look at Chris McCalister.

  15. 07elway says:

WOW!!! This is hands down the most wild and unpredictable offseason I’ve ever seen and lived through for this team. I’m beginning not to like surprises anymore… good grief!!

So Bly is gone… can definitely say I HATE this move. I think the front office has finally lost their minds. I would’ve killed my computer if it was Champ so as long as they hang on to him I think I’ll live. I wish Bly all the best in whatever he decides to do with the rest of his career and life. He’s truly been an asset to this team no matter what any of the haters say inlcuding our 2 year old Jack*** up there who has no respect for anyone or anything. Bly – you’re an awesome guy and football player… God Bless You!!!

And Jack Fan, I LOVE picking fights so I’m going there. If the Bly replacement is anything like you our defense is as dead as a doorknob. I’d hate to be you and have your 2 year old brain. You don’t deserve compassion… but pity instead.

    With faith…
    GO BRONCOS in ’09!!!!

  16. imready says:

MONODONO, you are definately a wack job! That being said, Bowlan should give you free season tickets, we need crazy fans like you in the stands every weekend!
I don’t see this team doing all their building thru the draft. The owner wants to win NOW, not in 5 years! That means our new head coach needs to win NOW and you aren’t gonna do that with just draft picks. I see them looking for d-lineman in free agency because the general consenseus is they take 3 years to develope. Maybe some other key positions too and maybe some trades for draft pics. Draft day could get exciting for the Broncos!
I think this core group of Broncos could challenge for the title in two years if our coach is as good as we hope he is. With #2 in the league talent on offense, with the right pick ups in free agency and trades plus the draft …we can always hope for a Superbowl in 2010! Go Broncos!

  17. imready says:

    Wow, Dre Bly gone!

  18. jack_fan says:

07elway, thank you! I now know you have zero football sense.

Bly made 10 million as the highest paid player on the D last year.

I saw him quit on a regular basis.

He didn’t deserve a undrafted rookie contract with his play.

Most people agree with me.This staff agrees with me!!! I don’t care how nice a guy he is.

Nobody will wish we had him back. Anyone else is an upgrade.

  19. jack_fan says:

  20. CARAMELLOO says:

Now yall bout to get my lil sis 07elway started! Yall already have brother mondo dropping knowledge from every direction. Now on to Bly’ and some of the other stuff……

1st…. I think BJ Raji lacks work ethic and would just end up being a big lazy DT. That’s just my opinion and I could be wrong just like I’m wrong about many things.

    2. Someone mentioned Mike Brown of the Bears and several other potential Free Agent bust. Mike Brown is injury prone! Chris Mccalister is injury prone. Hell ya might as well get both knees operated on Deuce Mccalister if your gonna waste money on often injured players.

    3. We don’t need to waste time on Peppers, Haynesworth, Suggs, Scott, etc. Too much money and all it will be about is money with them. We need a guy like Rey Maualuga who’s gonna come in and bring intensity. Also try to get Phillips from Tampa bc we need a SS.

    4. I know Bly’ didn’t tackle that great but you can’t fault the guy for all of the coverage mishaps. How can a DB cover with no pass rush?! We don’t need a big name DT or DE to get a pass rush. We can draft a guy in the later rounds who we know would fit our system instead of trying to make a guy fit our system.

Best of luck to Bly’ and the others who were let go.

  21. chuntbuck says:

anyone else really like the idea of grabbing malcolm jenkins? yes i know there are better options but i think we really have to start looking at the future of that position too, and what better time then when he could learn from champ.

  22. royalbroncofan1 says:

We need a leader on defense and Rey definitely fits the bill. Maualuga has great size and power….. ( 6’2″ 260 lbs). He can cover sideline to sideline and flies to the ball and hits like a locomotive !! He is surprisingly smooth for such a big linebacker. Maualuga has improved his instincts as a blitzer. Maualuga is a great middle linebacker prospect and in the right system could emerge as a great impact player… (A great prospect for Defensive Coordinator Dick Nolans 3-4 defense). Maualuga finished the 2007 season as USC’s leading tackler with 79 tackles, including 10.5 tackles for a loss of yardage and 6 sacks. Maualuga had a great game in the 2008 Rose Bowl, including 3 sacks and an interception. He was named the game’s “Outstanding Defensive Player.” Maualuga is the most instinctual linebacker college football has seen in the last 5 years. I’ll keep my fingers crossed on draft day.

  23. monodono says:

imready, your right I’m a wack job! Thanks just look at what a few comments started. A few day’s ago no one was posting except 07elway, BroncoAussie, and Mr. Rice. You say a few controversial things, present your thought’s right or wrong and watch the sparks fly, Pandemonium! Just look at the response. The Teachers, the dreggs, the cheerleaders, the gamers, and the classless, ALL true fans come out of the wood work.

jack_fan, your the classless one, some day you will get a pink slip and everyone you work with will sing! It’s one thing to say you think He should go but another to rub it in. No class.

    Good luck Mr. Bly

    TIME OF POSSESSION ! ! !

    GO BRONCOS ! ! !

  24. jayd06420 says:

James laurintas will be better for are team and won the butkis award last year just as good if not better than rey and has no problems off field we need james luarintas as are starting mlb i like rey too but he aint as good as james at man and zone coverage and reading plays before they happen not to metion is just as big as rey and hits just as hard i have my fingers crossed we draft james laurintas first round twelve overall

  25. 15themarshall15 says:

sorry for bly but he cost too much good luck dre your better then you get credit for go back and help the lions they need you back.

if were going full out three four our starting linebackers should be woodyard williams maualuga and boss, boss is good when he is healty i hope they dont cut him too i think they could cut anyone guys champ included highly doubted cause they would piss a lot of people off champ has a huge fan base as far as im concerned he is the defense

  26. jayd06420 says:

i agree good luck bly and monodono do u agree with me that james laurintas would be a great fit in orange and blue!!!!!!

  27. 15themarshall15 says:

i disagree we need julius peppers thats a big one and oj atogwe. hayneworth isnt worth the money though i agree we need to draft a NT but maybe third rounder. and even though its defense defense defense this year we gotta think about taking green if he is available at pick 48 guys him torain and hillis could be a great back field thats a top notch offense there. first rounder has to be rey maualuga he is better the laurinitas. maualuga is a run stuffer him and dj in the middle and woodyard on the weakside would be sick. i think namdi would be worth the money too but that probably dreaming there. champ and namdi with atogwe and barrett would be won of the top secondarys in the league. i love dreaming why not thats a superbowl run there its superbowl championship
    1. peppers 2. atogwe 3. namdi then were set lol

  28. jayd06420 says:

woodyard;baily;laurintas;williams dumervil;new dt hopefully a rookie and jarvis moss thats are 3 4 front line thats what i see happening we should get cris mcallister ravens cut him to make space for lewis so we need to get cris.

  29. Cutlercountry08 says:

ok some of u fans are right and you kno wut ur tlkn bout. buh all you fools tht think bly was a good player nd tht laurenitus is a good fit ur all idiots. first off ive never been happier to see someone leave the team.. this management knows exactly wat there doin. bly was the WORST replacement for the late darrent williams(rip) god i miss his presence. buh bly was completely useless on our team he was old he was slow as dirt nd he was always tryna make plasys tht he couldnt could make. terrible acquisitions. nd as for the guy who said bly had nuttn to work wit .. are u in idiot? bly was by any means jus a role player on the defense. nd besides he had the best cb in the game hands down on the other side of him. he always got burned. buh enough about him .. kno to the fool who said laurenitus would fit well in our defense. he wouldnt hes slow period. he played in the big ten which is a joke compared to the sec nd big 12 so i wouldnt pick him up unless he was available in the second round. my opinon u trade up nd get tht beast of a man brian orapko he is a monster. or the lb frm wake forest. nd if u cant then go wit a dt or ray manaluoga to finish off tht 3-4 tht we hopefully in stall. i see a shawn merriman written all over him. nd we need tht on our defense. im lovin the noise tht were makin already lets make some more. make a move nd tryn get chris mcallister or fred taylor ehh guys still a beast!! LOVE THE BRONCOSS!!! LETS GO IN 09 !!!!!!!!

  30. 07elway says:

jack fan, honey, you are just plain sad. I for the life of me cannot figure out why you would thank me… nothing I said to you is something to be proud of. You’re just p’od that someone finally said it to you and consider it that I said it to your face because this is as close as you would want me to be to your face. Keep in mind you pitiful excuse for a human being that I LOVE picking fights. I got NO problem tellin you off my dear.

And thank you to the people who backed me up or at least gave Bly the respect he deserves as a human being. Loved the responses!!

    With faith…
    GO BRONCOS in ’09!!!!

bly won the kc game or we wouldnt of been in it at all week 17

  32. chuntbuck says:

bly really underachieved over his time playing for us. i think we are dropping too much all at once but i feel the bly release was a very smart one. while i have been a huge laurinitis fan for the past few years i think our defense needs a maualuga to come in a be a leader for the next ten years.

  33. royalbroncofan1 says:

I meant Mike Nolans 3-4 defense. For some reason was thinking of his Father Dick Nolan (RIP). Disagree with you jayd06420 – Maualuga and Laurinitis are not the same size. We’ll see what happens on draft day.

WHAT DO YOU GUYS THINK ABOUT THE IDEA OF MOSS PUTTING IN 50

    THANK GOD!!!!!!!
SOMEONE FINALLY DECIDED TO GET RID OF DRE”I CAN’T KEEP UP WITH MY MAN”BLY.

  39. reaper81 says:

    man,
broncos are going to revamp the needed positions through the free agency, and the draft. mostly through the draft, we need fresh young players that are willing to work hard and be coached. we need more rookies like the ones we had in the 2008 season. if they can keep drafting like that, we will be in good shape. if are defense can be in the top 12 this year we should make a good run, i believe we can make it to the super bowl. the broncos are not that far off from i championship you guys don’t worry we are going to be alright we are due for another back to back.

  40. BradJamesBroncoFan says:

We should definitely pursue Bart Scott in free agency and with Dre Bly being released, a corner position is open. I have confidence that Xanders and McDaniels will make the right calls because if I didn’t it would be counter-productive to be a fan. It is expedient for us to draft effectively and I know that the evaluation process will be prescient and extensive. My friends, the Broncos are not as far away as many analysts would think. It all starts up front with our O-line studs. When Cutler has a running game, watch his turnovers decrease significantly while his offensive numbers remain high. In my opinion, the Broncos, Dolphins and Ravens are the future of the AFC. Of course, the Broncos will emerge triumphant consistently. GO BRONCOS!!!

  41. 15themarshall15 says:

suggs is franchised too you guys gotta keep up before you post

  42. West Coast says:

Bly getting cut made my day. What a freakin waste of money. Its about time he got the pink slip. For all you bloggers that thought he was good please let me know what you must be smoking. I am glad our new coaching staff obviously has some common sense. Thank you for the cuts. Please keep them coming beacuse our defense does not deserve a paycheck.

bly ??? strange move. I said i was not a fan if his, but he was better than playmah. boy do we need to do some wheelin and dealin for def players, our depth chart looks like freddy cruger gave a party.
by the looks of it we need 3 linemen, 2 or 3 linebackers and 2 or 3 def/backs. and just think they are just starting! i hope they save 11 to play the games. cap room, now we can sign maybe 2 elite def players. i’ll not make any predictions ‘couse i am already dizzy. but i think you blogers have covered them all.

Bly was weak. He couldn’t hit and he couldn’t make plays.

anybody for taking rey maualuga with our pick sticking him in the mlb/ilb spot and moving wesley woodyard back to safety with barrett…wood played the spot once this season and also started out that way in college as well…with wood and barrett back there that could be a young safety tandem that could knock heads for a long time to come…

the donk’s need to get back to hard nosed football. Get some guys that play ball.

Monodono your funny dude. Nic Harris is not projected to be a Safety he played LB at the Senior Bowl. Thomas and Askew are too small for nose in a 3-4. I think Antonio Smith is a realistic pick up from Arizona.

Remember Everyone Peppers wants to be a stand up outside Linebacker.

I think Delmas Safety or Vontae Davis CB would be a great selection
in the second round. I would like to trade out of #12 and pick up some extra picks if Raji is not around.

Time of possesion is the most overated stat in sports.
