The Underdogs

January 13th, 2012 - 7:50am by mike_rice

The Denver Broncos are right where they want to be. They are in the playoffs but still not picked to do too much.

“We love being underdogs,” linebacker Joe Mays said on Tuesday. “There’s no pressure. We just get going and play our style of football and just try to prove everybody wrong like we’ve been doing all year.”

I can’t imagine there are too many people outside of the Rocky Mountain region that are seriously going to pick the Broncos to defeat the Patriots. There are likely quite a few people in the region that will take the Patriots, even though those people might very well being pulling for the Broncos to spring an upset.

The Broncos probably don’t mind any of that one bit.

It has been amazing how through all the ups and downs, turmoil, uncertainty, inconsistency and injuries, the Broncos have somehow found a way to scratch and claw their way into the AFC divisional playoffs. At the very least, their accomplishment to this point is sensational. Inconceivable and unreal are the words that come to my mind.

The question now is where will this story end? Quarterback Tim Tebow was asked this week where the story of this season stands for him.

“None of us exactly know,” Tebow admitted. “But it’s a fun journey and we’re excited and every week trying to learn and improve and get better and not just look forward to the destination but enjoy the journey.”

What a journey it has been. Please excuse the Broncos for believing it will continue beyond this weekend.

“We’re confident (with) the way our season has gone and where we’re at,” head coach John Fox stated. “It’s a huge test no doubt to go up there against a very experienced team, a team that has been playoff-tested. That’s why there’s only eight (teams) left.”

While NFL players tend to say all the right things when few people give them a chance to win, they also tend to be the sort that wants to show the unbelievers to be wrong. That can be an extremely powerful position in which to be.

The Broncos believe they can beat the Patriots and I dare say they believe they will win. That kind of thinking should make for a very interesting game.

Perhaps the favored Patriots will do what so many people expect them to do, which is bring the Broncos’ crazy season crashing to an end.

But perhaps the Underdogs are ready to write yet another improbable chapter in a season that gets more magical by the week.

What will happen on Saturday night? Thanks for reading and sharing your thoughts.

Sincerely,
Mike

It is such a Joy to hear Broncos fans excited. I have been praying for my Broncos since they first became franchised and DEFINITLY have not had so much fun since John Elway was behind center.

Big D 44, and some others have already said it right. Other than turnovers, Denver has already shown that they have the capability to beat the Pats. They are underdogs, they are young, they are hungry, and they are for real. We don’t really need this win to put ourselfs at the top of the football world this year. Who do people talk about these days? They talk about MY team on every sports channel.

Historically, Pro analysts have made note of only a handful of pro bowl players on the Denver team. Meanwhile, they have slandered TT and actually laughed at the overall degree of Denver talent. The derision has been palpable as they have generally written the Broncos off as a bunch of losers. Every success during 2011 has been covered with excuses for Denver’s victims. They have described each victory as a fluke. Then they specifically stated that the wins would not continue, period!

I realize that these analysts must put out copious words and arguments for their salaries, but the inaccuracy regarding Denver would be unbearably embarrassing if I had said these words. Even some of Denver’s own fans have joined in this mindless clamor. I (for one) saw the wins coming and said so every week. I am smart and the experts are dumb. Hooraaa!

I will take Denver over the Pats 29 to 27.

My bets have been sweet this year.

That’s what I’m sayin’ fellas and ladies if there are any on here. This season is all gravy after the McDaniel fiasco. I don’t think a single Bronco fan from the beginning of the season thought we’d win the AFC West. Most picked us to be 4 and 12 or so. So it’s all gravy baby, all gravy! Of course I’m cheering for my Broncos to win and I think they can. New England is a good, classy, and formidable team but their defense is suspect and ours is peaking. If we don’t turn it over, we have a good a chance as any and if we get by the Patriots, we can beat the Ravens or the Texans. Anything is possible if you believe and I do. With that said, if we happen to lose, I can not be more proud of a team who showed resiliency and will be challenging for years to come, with all the young talented players we have. I want this win for Champ and Dawk, but we got some great players like Wesley Woodyard who never gets mentioned and boggles my mind. Did anyone realize that he has the most team tackles solo and combined? And he plays half the time DJ plays, not to take anything away from DJ. How about David Bruton who has made great touchdown saving stops in Dawk’s place. How about Robert Ayers as part of the triad of QB sackers. Everyone mentions Von and Doom but RA is a beast lately. Chris Harris is another gem, like Rod Smith who didn’t get drafted but will be a probowler. Can you tell I’m a defense guy? But much dap to the O-line. Ryan Clady and Hochstein and J.D. and Orlando are getting ‘er done! Glad to see Eddie back in the scheme of things and DT is beast! Our RB’s are grinding out a superb season. What a blessing to have Willis and Bell and Jeremiah! And the coaches have been superb and God Bless John Fox! Great motivating coach! John Elway – my 3rd hero in life has taken this team and made it a winner again! Thanks Mr. Bowlen for recovering so quickly from a near disaster! Always Broncos!

Thanks for the thoughts, folks. I appreciate them.

seweatherman1…I agree, it will be interesting to see how–and when–this whole season ends. I sure hope it isn’t on Saturday! Mike

killerkod…thanks. I completely agree with you regarding the turnovers. If the Broncos take care of the ball, I don’t see any reason why they can’t make a game of it. Wouldn’t it be unreal to see them win it? Mike

well here we are again..the underdogs..just were we want to be. nobody giving us a chance..guess well have to prove them wrong AGAIN…seems like people just dont learn.you dont bet against the broncos…unless you like losing money..as for me and mine…we believe..

  11. RobbMoore says:

We’ve got this, so long as we create turnovers and don’t give their defense a break. You keep their offense off the field and put Brady on his back. Go Broncos!

  12. ddk002 says:

30-20 BRONCOS. Lets do this guys, we believe in you!

  13. Ohio says:

If we are going to beat New England we have to make Brady uncomfortable…….get to him constantly, knock him down, rattle his cage, force a turnover or 2……..if we do this we can win this game. We need to get pressure on Brady and by doing this may result in a few big plays for the Pats but I’m willing to give up a big play or two if that means knocking Brady down and making them punt. The Pats D is suspect, we put up 16 points on them in heartbeat earlier this year……..this time those FG’s need to be Touchdowns……..I truly believe we can win this game, momemtum is on our side and when you’re the underdogs and no one is expecting you to win crazy things can happen……..I also don’t think the Pats respect the Broncos and Tebow for that matter……..shock the world fellas!

    Go Broncos!

Guys… it has been a pleasure watching this whole season. I knew Orton would fail us and Fox had the courage to stick Tebow in whether it was to fail or to learn, I don’t care but anything was better than watching Orton. I haven’t seen a year of football so entertaining and fun to watch in forever. This may even be better than our super bowl winning years. With that being said, I have been wanting this match-up ever since we handed them the game last time and I stand firm in my wishes. We CAN beat this team. Good game plan and EXECUTION are the only 2 things required. A little luck doesn’t hurt now and then though. Last weeks game our coaching staff put together a gem and the guys went out and executed it…. not perfectly but real close. This game will take a lot of rushing, ball security and 2 or 3 big throws and Brady and Tebow can meet again in the middle of the feild.. with class the same as before, but with different results. BRONCO D… DON”T FAIL US NOW!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Turn those sacks into turnovers…

  15. truecolors36 says:

The anti Christ media tried to crucify Tebow last game ,because they Pridefuly thought not even God could Help him against this Steelers D-fence against the Pass ,Tebow throws 40 yard passes like there 10 yard passes,Hes a GIANT at the long Ball ALL YEAR.gET HIM A COUPLE MORE FAST recievers who can beat there defender down field ,he will make a Living on droping the A-BOMBS.

  16. truecolors36 says:

Tebow needs a Randy Moss kind of Guy to playside bye side with number 88 which is your record this season 8-8 ,this would compliment Tebows natural Tallent to throw the 40 yard pass like its a 10 yard pass.Put this is your Christmas List, will Help Against many of the touch apponents next year.

  17. jdoms24 says:

agreeing with you all about the no turning it over but even winning the turnover battle and playing a full game of football wont help us win the refs gotta call plays as they are not as they want them like facemasks and holding when miller and doom come storming across the line. because we all know today denver plays the team that refs play favorite to because of pretty boy tom

man this is going to be a long six hours….the pre-game has started in my house..my tebow crazed 14 yr old daughter has covered her entire face in orange and blue, along with her tebow jersey, orange and blue fingernails, one blue shoe, one orange, one blue earing, one orange,my wife has her lucky denver outfit on, my son following suit. the sweet smell of bbq fills the house, and then me sourounded by my broncos goodies, sitting in front of a 60 inch hd tv, watching the coverage on the nfl network(nobody giving us a chance but whats new) ready to watch denver put new england in its place (watching the super bowl from the couch), and good friends coming over to watch denver move on to the next game…….. good day, great friends, it dont get much better. win or lose, tebow has brought football goosbumps back to my house, as for me and mine……..we believe… have a great day everyone, and enjoy the show…..
