The Frenzy Begins

March 1st, 2009 - 2:51am by mike_rice

NFL free agency is underway and the Broncos have already made a splash. Safety Brian Dawkins makes the move from Philadelphia to Denver and he is in the fold.

There are also multiple report that the organization is also close to signing safety Renaldo Hill, running back Correll Buckhalter, wide receiver Jabar Gaffney and longsnapper Lonie Paxton.

It seems like a good possibility the moves are imminent and if they indeed come to pass, I like them.

First off, the Broncos would presumably have their two starting safeties and upgraded the back end of their defense.

Dawkins is a seven-time Pro Bowler who spent 13 seasons with the Eagles. Yes, he is 35 years old. But he still plays at a high level and, by all accounts, is a tremendous presence in the locker room.

He also comes to Denver ready to go all out.

“We’re all jacked,” Dawkins said on Saturday. “I’m jumping around with my words because I’m so emotionally excited about this opportunity.”

Dawkins said he knew early on that head coach Josh McDaniels wanted him wearing orange and blue and while it was emotional to leave Philadelphia, Dawkins knew it was the right decision.

“Just hearing Josh and how excited he was and how much they wanted me here. I was not just a want for them. They felt like (it was) a necessity for me to be here and that’s something every player wants to feel from an organization.”

Hill figures to step in as the starting free safety. There is little doubt the Broncos would have upgraded the safety position if Hill joins Dawkins in Denver.

The same can be said for running back, if all the paperwork gets done with Buckhalter. Yes, he comes with some miles on the tires—he is 30 years old and has had a handful of knee injuries—but he is a tough runner who can be productive.

He is an established pro, something the Broncos desperately needed at the running back position. Peyton Hillis and Ryan Torain seem to have talent. But one has to feel better about the position with Buckhalter and Arrington in the fold. And who knows? Maybe Derrick Ward will also find Denver to his liking. He seems to like enough to visit Dove Valley.

The bottom line is that, assuming the Broncos get everything done with the players they are reportedly close to signing, I believe they Broncos are a better football team today and free agency is only a few days old as we write this.

They are better at the safety position. They are better at the running back position. And Gaffney should be a good fit as the third or fourth wide receiver.

The Broncos probably aren’t done, either.

Along with reportedly visiting with Ward, the Broncos are likely looking to shore up the cornerback spot. There are reports that they’ll be talking with Andre Goodman, who started 16 games for the Dolphins last year.

There is no doubt the Broncos have more work to do. But they seem to be off to a good start.

What do you think the Broncos should do next?

Thanks for reading,
Mike

March madness i love it. lol. Yeah maybe marshall should take goodell to court if suspended. I just hope we know his decision before draft. so we can know if we need to draft a receiver.

Jay is coming to town lets drop the cutler talk til at least next week

  6. broncosforlife80 says:

Cutler has every right to be pissed off and i would to if i was him. It shows no confidence and lack of respect for cutler. Especially trading for a guy like cassel who is still relatively unproven, because he played with the patriots, now watch him in kansas city choke becuase he dosent have the same supporting cast. Cutler is a much better QB then cassel will ever be. MOST DEFINETLY ON CUTLERS SIDE ON THIS ONE!

IM HAPPY WITH THE DEFENSIVE PICK UPS ALSO

  7. Bailey'sBestFan says:

Hey broncos 82 cool down just a bit alright MC D has publicly stated that he will not trade cutler. As to the petition nothanks i think MC D knows whats best(for now) give him a year. i like the signing i think this will be a good year.
their is two things that i am concerned about and the firsr is if MC D will utilize are TE’s as wide recivers or not and second if he is serious about possibly trading stokley and or schefller

  8. TonUpSoldier says:

First, to the guy talking about Cutlers diabetes and stamina. You obviously dont know what you’re talking about, or even know anyone with the disease. For starters, there are multiple types of diabetes, some are worse than others. Cutlers is pretty maintainable. Yes, it can effect your stamina if not watched. But they seem to have a pretty damn good system in place. Second, he’s not getting a shot of “medicine” Its called Insulin and its something most peoples bodies make naturally. Just so happens that diabetics dont. NFL teams have the best doctors money can buy, dont for one second think that Jays condition will cause issues with his ability to play now that they know that he has it, and have it under control.

I would also like to add that im glad that McD ballzed up and told the media exactly whats going to NOT happen now. Should have done it sooner, but water under the bridge. Now lets just hope the two of them can work it out and start fresh. Time will tell.

Lastly, as angry as ive been over the whole McD/Cutler fiasco, I have to say im extremely impressed with our FA aquisitions. I think it will bolster the defense, and help get some of these younger guys like Moss and Crowder a chance to learn and progress.

Orange and Blue, through and through. Go Broncs!

  9. broncosforlife80 says:

also for the amount of talent cutler has the amount were paying himright now is a steal. all these other QB’s wants 15 16 millions dolaaras a year and were paying cutler 6 mill. Its a steal which tells me he just loves playing football and hes not a million dollar baby like the rest of the big name QB’s out there.

  10. G funk says:

First of all i LOve watching ESPN. But im also pissed about the way they have handeld the story about Cutler. Has anybody noticed the majority of the rumers are come from all these other teams reporters and newspapers. I think Cutler is realizing this to. My opnion is alot of teams want Cutler so they are putting all this stuff out there to ESPN so they can keep this story going so tthey can get Cultler just to say he wants to be traded. That why i’m glad to see that J going to meet with MCd

  11. funnycar says:

A note to Cutler; Shutup and do your job, like those of us who buy tickets have to.
A note to Coach McD; Bronco fans hate everything about the Patriots, quit acting like one.

  12. lostfan says:

hey wasn’t it cutler’s agent who first brought these accusations out, maybe, just maybe, it was all a bunch of hot air coming out of Cooks mouth because he invested all his money with Madoff, and needed some extra cash.

  13. BradJamesBroncoFan says:

I think Bus Cook is a moron with a stupid name. With that said, McDaniels has confirmed the truth so now he and Jay need to get a better rapport. Yes, funnycar, on the 4th of July, I celebrate Anti-New England Patriot Day with my good friend who’s a Colts fan.

  14. 15themarshall15 says:

Angelo Crowell is who we should get guys only reason he isnt highest thought after player is cause of one injury thats not as serious as tought he was just put on ir at beginning of year cause bills needed his roster spot we have to take a chance on him
and bus cook is a good agent he just gets plublicity they brought this on its offseason everyone needs a story right

  15. monodono says:

    lostfan,
I agree with you Bus Cook is trying to boost Cutlers value so He can sign a big new contract which, He may deserve. Like Broncosforlife80 said Cutler is cheap right now and He is probably getting some bad advice right now. I think it’s a skam. I’m not saying Coach McDaniels did nothing wrong but Cutler and His Agent are setting us up.
I hope They don’t try to pull an Andreus Gallaraga (spelling?)on us. Remember He wanted to stay in Denver if The Rockies would let Him, I want to retire a Rockie….. Then He left for a few more mill. He played The Fans against The TEAM to start a bidding war then left. (BOOOOO)

you all are right about bus cook. he is the only one to profit out of a trade, with all his fees and commisions. i have a friend that was working for one. he told me stories only a blood sucking SOB would do.

  19. xxgracegunnerxX says:

..the cutler thing is old news…non-existant…so stop talking about it…theres nothing you can say that hasnt been said a thousand times!! get off mcdaniels back too…we all know how the media and the moron anylists take a story…blow it up WAY too much..beat it to death..twist it around… because the $$/ratings are in the drama…i guess thats the price you pay for a tv network starving for things to talk about 365days a year.. when the dust settles after the season ends…anyways…teams are always gonna call…who knows who else has been in trade talks…prolly happens everyday…jays the man..mcdaniels is the man…get over it or its gonna be a long year…GO BRONCS!!!

  20. xxgracegunnerxX says:

..interestingly enough…wasnt another one of “bus” cook’s QB’s all wrapped up in the news last season…i cant remember his name…haha

  21. Cutlerizer says:

The headlines this morning make me happy.
Cutler, Coach, lets get in the playoffs this year and win the damn SuperBowl!
Now, who’s onboard with this sentiment.

  22. Cutlerizer says:

I keep reading various bloggers’ (NFL fan) comments at ESPN and elseware–talking about Jay Cutler, our quarterback in Denver.

There is this sentiment out there, obviously motivated by a combination of jealousy and gullibility (stupidity), which says that Jay is somehow “over-rated.”

As a long time Denver fan, it occurs to me that this is precisely what we continually heard from the cowardly people outside of Broncoland about another Denver QB–the Best Quarterback of all time–John Elway. It’s time we face up to the truth, as Bronco Fans, that part of being who we are, means that we will always suffer from a lack of respect from other fans in the league.

So, our Quartback isn’t pretty to look at (face it Jay, you’re no Tom Brady, and we don’t want a pretty boy to look at in Denver anyway). So, he’s a little cocky at times (as if John wasn’t). What he does have is the arm to make all the throws, and a team that wants to win with him at the healm.
    He’s a flat out stud.

    DeBerg? Brister? Griese? Plummer?

No, we are an Elway town, which means we are now a Cutler town.
    Go Broncos!!
Bring back the the Orange jerseys–I promise it will give the Defense its swagger back.
    Peace Out, Bronco Fans

  23. S.D.Bronco30 says:

Anyone know who else the Broncos are looking at? I have not heard much lately.

  24. brian_schneider says:

McDaniels must think he’s still in NE with all the old guys he’s been picking up. It is the same thing that NE does sign a bunch of old guys and hopefully they’ll play well enough to get to the Super Bowl. I guess it sort of has worked but I want to have a competitive team for seasons not just one or two. With all these old guys we are going to have to “rebuild” in 2 or 3 seasons. That’s if some of these FA signings aren’t busts again.

  25. BigSmoove says:

Good to see there are a few die hard Bronco fans out there that realize Coach is not the biggest scumbag in the world. This whole soap opra reminds me of how the media would just take off with T.O. stories… ridiculous! Listen, you have to understand that this guy has a lot of pressure and high expectations riding on his performance. He just took over for a Hall Of Fame coach who brought Denver’s only championships to fold… and he is coming to one of the greatest sports cities in America and trying to win with one of the most successful franchises in sports… Guys and Girls, he didnt except a job with the freaking Browns or Jets. This is the F@#$ing Denver Broncos! We dont talk about rebuilding even when we suck, and we dont lose at home! Now dont get me wrong, I would have probably had a hard attack if this new guy traded away the face of the franchise but you do have to commend this guy for coming in and trying to make this team a winner… this year! With this offense and his play calling… it could happen. We just need to put up some resistence on Defense and make sure we dont turn over the ball more than the other team every week… I know, sounds like Pop Warner… but trust me we didnt play far from that much last year…

  26. lostfan says:

hey all you No Fun League experts out there, can some explain to me why the nfl wants to bench brandon for half the season for him and his girlfriend getting into a shouting match, when they do not even slap a players wrist when he is involved with murder? and yes i am talking about a ravens player. when lewis was involved in the murders that happened at a strip club the nfl backed away from even making a statement. hey maybe if vick killed his girlfriend instead of his dog he still be the falcons qb

  27. BigSmoove says:

    brian_schneider

I hear you man but that is old football… Free angency and salary cap have taken over football! Think about it… you sign a young star for much more money, he is just going to leave again when the money is right somewhere else. I dont mind us spending money on someone who is proven and is a lot cheaper then Hansworth or Hall! Dont get me wrong though, I dont agree with all the signings so far like Fields and Reid or another freaking Brown… are you kidding me God! Anyways… Welcome to new age football and why the Patriots are successful… oh and remember 1997 and 1998… some of the guys on that roster: Ed McCaffrey, Neil Smith, Bill Romanowski, Ray Crockett, Darrien Gordon… all free agents and all big reasons why we were finally successful!

  28. BigSmoove says:

    lostfan

I agree dude… I’m sick of all the harsh things said about Vick and what they are going to do BMarsh yet Crazy Ray doesnt even get a talking too and Pacman goes out and gets chance after chance when he is ordering hits like he is in the mafia or something!

  29. Torain ATV fan says:

its all about who the commish wants to suceed.

  30. -=DaNation=- says:

Vick ought to be drowned or hung just like what he did to his own dogs. . . what a piece of sh*t

  31. Torain ATV fan says:

he has paid for his crime, which i can say many have not. So lets let him be, who cares anyway he is not a BRONCO.

  32. Torain ATV fan says:

there is a report that we have signed a deal with lamont jordan. makes me believe torain might not get a true shot to be our workhorse.

  33. BigSmoove says:

    -=DaNation=-

I dont condone Vick’s transgressions! But are you screaming for Pacman or Chris henry or Tank Johnson or any of these other spoiled overpaid athletes driving drunk to be hung! Vick was involved with some horrible things involving animals… these other guys are reckless to other human beings lives! Nothing in this world is more important than human life…

  34. Torain ATV fan says:

agreed nothing more important than human life. i dont condone vick either, but at least he has already paid for his crime. I love animals also. I think i have had dogs that i loved more than certain family members. lol. i just think hes done his time, while like you said others have not.

  35. john4alibroncos says:

Well, i think everything is blown out of proportion…In fact, i think JC will use being almost traded as a weapon. JC will come out this year with a ” chip ” on his shoulder and will lead denver to the playoffs, after all we have made the best off season moves in my opinion…GO BRONCOS!!!!!

  36. shawn723 says:

if the NFL looks into it and sees that all it really was was a shouting match than theres no way Goodell can do anything. IF he does, i think we will miss him but we can win without him weve proven that

  37. john4alibroncos says:

I am new to this site. I just want to say hello to everyone and i hope the broncos go all the way , i mean look at miami, 1-15 to 11-5..We were 8-8 and i think we can win the division this year…..I also want to give a shout out to my girlfiend……….kiss Ali

  38. brian_schneider says:

Serious question here, why are we looking for RB? I thought that we had a pretty decent core, I mean aside from the injuries. I thought that we would have a good chance of keeping some of them. Do you think we’ll be using FA to set up mainly our D and go after some offensive guys in the draft or what?

  39. LBWilson56 says:

Let me say this once and for all…Let’s stop all this”i’ll go where Cutler goes”and “I may have to stop being a Bronco fan”because of McD..Atrue fan is measured by his loyalty to his team.I’ve been a bronco fan since i was 6 and had to suffer through many hardships:Bad drafts, blowout superbowls, idiot coaches(Phillips).Trust me,if you out there in these blogs consider you a TRUE Broncos fan,you know its never been a rose garden except for our first S.B Win…We’ve had our ups and downs, and will continue to have, but you have to remain loyal and supportive. If you a true bronco fan,no more talk of following players,or leaving the team because of bad decisions.I Bleed orange and blue and i trust everyone on this blog does too.Man the F up and support…my soap box just collasped so im done..

  40. broncoryan says:

So what does everyone think about the way the D is shaping up with free agency? I for one am excited. I am still thinking DT if Raji is available.

  41. BucknBronco says:

Buckhalter is going to be good for us. With him and Hillis in the backfield, we should have a pretty productive running game. I’d really hate to see Scheffler go. I like Graham, he’s aggressive, but so is Tony. They both had some good plays last year. I’m stoked about keeping Stokely.
With what has already transpired, it would be difficult to guess what our final roster or depth chart will look like. Even before training camp, it has many new names. New names of players who are here to MAKE names for themselves and be a part of this new era of the Broncos franchise.
We knew things were going to be different, and not everyone was going to end up wearing Bronco Blue this year. Nobody ever wants to see their favorite player(s) go, but I say give Coach McDaniels a chance. He’s the coach, and he’s very motivated. I think we’ve ended up with some good FA players so far.
Hopefully Coach and Cutler get past things. We’ve previously been told to expect to see alot of passing. It’s very important that Cutler is the one doing the passing. With fewer mistakes, and a little growing up, Cutler is the kind of QB that you see in the Pro Bowl every year. With a stable running game, Cutler will be able to relax a bit. I think we’ll have that running game, and I think Jay will like all of the targets when it’s time to sling it. He needs to learn that playbook inside and out, so we’re not constantly going THREE AND OUT. At least have it FedEx’d or something man!

    Go Broncos!!!

  42. dlmyers says:

Like our mothers always told us “if you can not say something nice about someone do not say anythink”. Enough said.
Josh McDaniels and Brian Xanders is in charge, period.
Since we have not won in over eight years, maybe the roster should be trimmed. Tony Scheffler will be traded. Dan Graham will not like his new role. Jay Cutler needs to learn to be a control QB (yes like Brady and Cassell). The 2008 offense was good but at only stacking up yardage. Could not score, could not use the clock. Hum, maybe it was not that good.

I really like what I see because I am tired of losing!!!!

  43. Torain ATV fan says:

i think we should give our 1st and 5th round pick, for someones else is early 1st rd pick, so we can be sure we get raji. what do you guys think? is this possible or do you guys think we would have to give up more? Does anyone know how much money we have left in the cap?

  44. broncosgo 09 says:

i like mike peterson the ex middle linebacker of the jaguars is a very good defensive player and is in the free agency.broncos domination on 09

  45. broncoryan says:

    dlmyers,

Graham may not like his new role, but he has said publicially that he wants to retire as a Bronco, he likes it here. But then again that may have changed withe the staff. I love him and Tony, I hope they can figure out how to keep both, Scheffler is one of my favs

  46. monodono says:

Torain ATV, were did you hear The Broncos signed LeMont Jordan? Give us a link please.

  48. aSharpeIdea_84 says:

BigSmoove – Nothing in this world is more important than human life…

I hear your point BigSmoove but I would like to remind you that without bacteria, all human life is over. The fact is, ALL life is equally important because in reality we all need each other to survive and thrive on this planet. The world as a whole forms a symbiotic relationship where a lot of the key players are microscopic.

Translating that to football lingo, saying ‘nothing is more important than human life’ is the same as saying noting is more important than the QB. But without a great OL and great receivers to throw to, and a great running game to offset the pass, and a great defense to get you back onto the field, then the QB can’t flourish. It’s a team sport and so is life.

It’s time for us as a species to get back to nature and realize that we are all One. One with Earth, Sky, Nature, and especially each other. Government, Religion, Culture, Social status…these things serve only to divide us. United we stand, divided we fall.

And I agree Michael Vick has served his time but more importantly has he had a change of heart? I sincerely hope he makes a triumphant return to the NFL. That would be a great story for us all.
