The Dust Settles

February 1st, 2009 - 12:20am by mike_rice

As the 2008 NFL draws to a close, the Broncos have spent the last month planning for the 2009 campaign and beyond.

The shock and surprise of the team’s first head coaching change in 14 years has now settled into the reality that the Josh McDaniels era is underway at Dove Valley.

Ultimately, time will tell how successful Coach McDaniels is. This past week there were strong indications that he is off to a great start.

Broncos’ quarterback Jay Cutler told 850 KOA last week that he wasn’t exactly a happy camper when he heard the news of Coach Shanahan’s dismissal.

“I was mad, I was shocked, I was disappointed,” Cutler admitted. “Coming off my third year, we had a lot of success and I felt like we were going to take some steps back and start all over again. When it first happened, I wasn’t very happy about it.”

But after speaking with his new head coach several times, Cutler believes the Broncos hired the right guy.

“He impressed me from the start,” Cutler told 850 KOA. “(He’s) very sharp, you can tell he had a lot of energy. A month removed (from the change), after the fact, you can kind of understand why it was time for a change.”

Obviously I am no football coach and I didn’t even stay at a Holiday Inn Express last night. But I know the Broncos’ new coach had to get the quarterback is his corner.

Coach McDaniels is winning Cutler over and the quarterback believes the rest of the players will soon learn why he is so excited about his new head coach.

“I think the guys are going to be able to relate to him,” Cutler said. “I don’t think they’ll have any problems respecting him even though he is 32 because he has a presence about him and I haven’t even met him in person. This is just (from talking with him) over the phone. I have a good feel about him.”

Certainly none of this guarantees a spot in the playoffs next year but it is undoubtedly a good start.

Coach McDaniels has spent the last few weeks filling out his coaching staff. Most notably, former 49ers’ head coach Mike Nolan is the Broncos’ new defensive coordinator.

Nolan has often used the 3-4 scheme, one which many people have pointed out doesn’t fit the Broncos’ current personnel. Given the struggles the Broncos’ have had on defense the last few years, we would all be hard-pressed to think of a defensive scheme they could run that would produce a vastly improved result.

Furthermore, to think that Nolan can only coach a defense that runs a 3-4 seems short-sighted to me. The man has been coaching in the NFL since 1987. He knows defense, not just one defense.

Again, the credentials don’t guarantee a thing. But let’s at least give him a chance to unpack the moving boxes before we start telling him what defense to run.

Change can be unsettling. In this case, the sudden and dramatic nature of it turned the Broncos’ football operations partially upside down. That is difficult for all involved.

But that time is quickly becoming the past. Now Coach McDaniels is settling in and Cutler, for one, is embracing the change.

“I put down the phone (after their first conversation) and texted Casey (Wiegmann) and said, ‘You need to call this guy; he’s the real deal,’” Cutler shared. “When Josh was hired everyone (was thinking), ‘He’s 32 and he hasn’t had any head coaching experience.’ But it’s going to be fun.”

Coach Shanahan is a great football coach and will one day be in the NFL Hall of Fame. Before that, he will likely land a another really good head coaching position in the NFL. Moreover, his legacy will rightly be as one of the best coaches in Denver sports history. A big, big part of me wishes he were still the Broncos’ head coach.

I can also say that as the days go by, I find myself more excited about Coach McDaniels and his staff. I am looking forward to the off-season more than I have in a long time.

Now that the assistant coaches are on board, what are your thoughts about the new staff? I ask you keep your comments respectful; I enjoy reading your posts.

Thanks and I’ll catch up with you next week and share some thoughts about the Super Bowl.

Best,
Mike

    Jack_Fan-
Like where your coming from. The Salary Crap is somtimes an issue but i think alot of those guys are good and if we could pick up a couple of them we can be good.

Also, what do you guys say about Josh Barrett & Jamie Winbourn? Here’s the Defense I want to see next year:

    DT – *B.J. RAJI
    DE – ELVIS DUMERVIL
    DE – MARCUS THOMAS
    MLB – **JONATHAN VILMA
    MLB – WOODYARD
    SOLB – JAMIE WINBOURN
    WOLB – D.J. WILLIAMS
    CB – CHAMP BAILEY
    CB – *VICTOR “MACHO” HARRIS
    FS – ????????????
    SS – JOSH BARRETT

    * – PROJECTED DRAFT PICK
** – PROJECTED FA PICK UP

So what do you guys think of my opnion, am i crazy? :)

  2. broncos14441 says:

Maybe move Josh Barrett to FS an hire Darren Sharper an SS. Just a thought.

  3. Jack_Fan says:

I can’t afford my defense? Below you will see the players cut to make room for my players. And I didn’t say that we would pick up the high end free agents. I targeted more affordable and effective players. I think my projection is very doable for those reasons.

I am projecting that we will no longer be paying for:
    Dre Bly
    Dwayne Robertson
    Ebenezer Ekuban
    Darrell Jackson
    Niko Koutivides
    Marlon McCree
    Michael Pittman
    Nate Webster
    Selvin Young

Maybe even Jarvis Moss and Tim Crowder

These coaches have no reason to keep draft picks from the previous staff they deem to be useless. They will be cutting the fat as they see fit.

  4. Jack_Fan says:

By the way. There will certainly be more players cut. I’m simply listing the ones who will clear away the most salary cap space.

  5. monodono says:

Jack_Fan, it looks good on paper but I think Niko Koutouvides and Dre Bly’s money is garanteed, Nate Webster is allready a FA I could be wrong.
The Broncos projected cap space is around 34Mill which is pretty good, and your right there will be more.

    TIME OF POSSESSION ! ! !

    GO BRONCOS ! ! !

Wow monodono – thanks for the scoop with FA and UFA’s ! Great job compiling this information. Just read that Larry Johnson wants out of KC.

There is good reason for optomism, and it’s not just because he has a high football IQ.

I suppose the enthusiasm that I keep hearing about gives me optomism also. The head coaching job requires a lot of energy. If he really is that enthusiastic it will be contagious for the players.

I think that Shannahan may have lost some of that excitement at the end. I noticed him showing emotion on the sideline this last year that he has not shown in years past. I wondered at the time if he was beginning to feel the pressure of not winning for a few years. In retrospect I wonder if it was a sign of the times (so to speak).

  11. broncos20 says:

Wow! thanks monodono for all the info…did your h/w well…..

  12. Iamthe56 says:

Why has no one said James Larinitus

  13. Iamthe56 says:

one thing i want to know about this L.J. deal is does he want out because of a legitamate reason or because the team has hit a rough patch because if its the latter i don’t think he belongs in denver unless he is just showing up for a routine beating

  14. BroncoAussie says:

LJ wants out of KC because he doesn’t fit in with the team and community, so he says. Just sounds like he has no friends to be honest. As for my thoughts I think they will target a LB in the 1st round, Maualuga if he is still around or James Larinitus. They will take a NT in the 2nd or 3rd round and this will allow Marcus Thomas to play DE. I think they will have a long look at someone like Julius Peppers or Terrell Suggs to play the other DE position. I’m thinking there will be at least one big name FA pick up this offseason and it will be one of them.

  15. raiderhater78 says:

that is very good info monodono. u also have to take into consideratioin our new coaching staffs pay and the fact that if Shanny doesnt go to another team we owe him a dump load of money to not be coachin. Nate is a FA and i hope hes not picked back up and as much as niko may have been a STer i dont wanna c him back either make room for some good LB’s

And just for fun, my birthday is coming up in a couple of months and as my fellow Broncomaniacs… I’d love some input on this. I’m wanting to buy myself a BD present and I for the life of me cannot pick between an Elway or Cutler fathead. I’m on the edge to get both – I can’t stand the thought of getting one without the other. Any input??

    With faith…
    GO BRONCOS in ’09!!!!

  17. monodono says:

Iamthe56, I like the idea of picking James Laurinaitis in the draft, but I think we’re trying to evaluate The current Team to get an idea of who Coach McDaniels will Keep. Then comes Free Agency, then The NFL DRaft.

BroncoAussie, I like your input do you think you could put up a speculative roster of the TEAM you think should stay before Free Agency and the The Draft? Actually I think everyone should try to do this and see what wee come up with.

raiderhater78, I don’t think the Coaching staff’s salary goes against the Cap. The “Team Salary” falls under the Salary Cap. Team salary includes the amount a team must pay its current or former players under their player contracts. Notice emphasis on the word PLAYERS. The salary cap does not apply to coaches, assistants, trainers, and other personnel. Only the top 51 player salaries for a team count against the salary cap in the offseason. During the season, all player salaries count toward the salary cap. However Pat Bowlen still has to fork it out…

07elway, Get both it’s your Birthday:-) or maybe your boyfriend will get you one. OH AND I KINDA FEEL SOMEONE NEEDS TO STEP UP AROUND HERE WE GOT NO TIME TO MESS AROUND. SOMEONE GIVE ME A JOB DOING THIS!

    TIME OF POSSESSION ! ! !

    GO BRONCOS ! ! !

  19. BroncoAussie says:

Hey monodono, thanks for the great input. As for the team I won’t go in to the exact roster but the starting 11 on each side. For offense I would want them to keep the same players. I would like Hillis to play FB because he can create great mismatchs with his hands and running ability. I would like to see them give Torain a shot and Aldrige a go. But looking to the draft if “Beanie” Wells falls to us at 12 don’t be surprised to see McD grab him to be our every down back. The rest of the Offense I would leave the same, I only wish that Tony Scheffler stays health because he is a big part of the Offense. As for the D, this is assuming that we move to a 3-4 which I think is a given, I would have Marcus Thomas DE, not sure on a NT probably some one we draft or sign through FA same could be said for the other DE position. Though I would like to see what Carton Powell can do, I think that was the DT we drafted that got injury. If he can be a gem like the other guys we got in that draft maybe he can play the DE position otherwise we need to get someone that has the size for this position. For the linebackers we have a surprising number of guys for these positions. We could have Bailey, Larsen, Williams, Woodyard, Winborn, Doom, Moss and possibly Crowder. I like Larsen but he probably would be a FB and special teamer. Bailey is a good OLB but always injured so he could be cut. I have read that DJ will be moved inside which could be a good position for him but I heard that he prefers outside. Winborn is a good fill in but not a starter. Woodyard needs to be on the field he is a great player and we won games with this guy on the field, this kid could be a leader on defence. The question is on Doom and Moss, I would not be surprised if Moss is cut or a backup/rotation guy this season. Doom, I hate to say it, could be traded. He is a great player but just undersized and has a lot of question marks on whether he can stand up and still play in a 3-4, personally I want him to stay (I love the undersized guys that stick it to the man like Woodyard and Doom) but he could be traded to a 4-3 team for a 2nd or 3rd draft pick depending on his value. Crowder will most likely be back as a backup. So Woodyard, Williams, Drafted ILB or Larsen, and hopeful Doom or Bailey for linebackers. For the secondary Champ is a must, CB stands for Champ Bailey. I think Dre still has game but would probably be let go to make more cap room and a younger guy will get a go, Josh Bell or Jack Williams maybe someone we draft. At safety I want Josh Barrett to start he is a really quick and big dude, remember the hit he had on Steve Smith, great. Though he needs some work so he doesn’t over pursue or get beat. As for the other safety position I don’t think anyone else from last season would get the start but a few will be kept for ST. So someone we draft or sign would play here.

    So quick run through:

DE – Thomas, Powell? Signee/Drafted Player?
    NT – Signee/Drafted Player?
ILB – Williams, Larsen?, Drafted Player?
    OLB – Woodyard, Doom, Bailey?
    CB – Champ, Signee/Drafted Player??
    Saftey – Barrett, Signee/Drafted Player?

So I have maybe 5 starting positions on defence that I think will be filled by knew guys.

  20. BroncoAussie says:

Also Mario Haggan, might get a run at ILB.

  21. 07elway says:

monodono – So funny you told me to get both because that’s exactly what I did last night. They had this deal going on buy one get one half off and I just couldn’t pick between the two – Elway is a living legend & HOFer and Cutler, well I just love the guy plus he’s an awesome QB. So happy birthday to me… early birthday that is.

And I just wanted to say, I love what Jay has been doing down in Hawaii. Been reading his journal entries every day and this guy is just one big inspiration and so classy. He’s got such a heart of gold!! Loved the story he posted Tuesday about how 2 O-linemen (one from the Chargets and the other from the Jets) they came up to him at the hotel pool and asked him for his cell phone. He said he gave it to them (foolishly) and as soon as he did they both pushed Jay into the pool. He called it Rookie Initiation… thanks for the laugh Jay!!! :p
So glad he made it to the Pro Bowl. He, B-Marsh and Casey really deserved it. I could name off a ton of our guys that deserved but at least we got some greats representing the Bronco Orange & Blue down there. Just think its the stupidest thing though that they’re taking the Pro Bowl out of Hawaii… just plain dumb. Seriously, why break a 30 year tradition!?

    With faith…
    GO BRONCOS in ’09!!!!

  22. raiderhater78 says:

07Elway i agree a 100% bout Jay. I wasnt a 100% with the choise to start him his first year over plummer but i gotta say im so glad i was wrong.

i think this is how our D will play out

NT, Thomas/Draft/FA(Tank Johnson,Haynesworth, just look for a BIG DT)
    RE, Doom,Ekuban
    LE, FA/trade
ROLB, DJ with woodyard switching in occasionally
MLB, Trade/FA(Suggs or anyone we can trade for)/Draft/Boss/Larsen
    LOLB, Jamie/Moss/Draft/FA
    SCB, Champ
    WCB, Dre/Bell/FA/Trade
    SS, McCree/Draft
FS, Barrett with Fox switching in occasionally

  23. raiderhater78 says:

Heres what id like to see next year on o

OL, Same line as last year including Casey (i hope Nalen retires its time)
TE, Scheff starting TE and Ghram backin it up on the other side
    WR1, B Marsh
    WR2, Eddie
Slot, Stokes, and Chad switching in for experience when stokes retires
    HB, Tatum/Hillis
    3DRB, Hillis
    FB, Pittman/FA

  24. broncos14441 says:

    For Offense I think this:
    * * * LINE * * *
    LT – Clady
    LG – Hamilton
    C – Wiegemann
    RG – Kuper
    RT – Harris
    * * * MAIN BACKFIELD * * *
    RB – Young/Torain
    FB – Hillis
    QB – Cutler
    * * * SITUATIONAL BACKFIELD * * *
    3DRB – Pittman/Hillis
    GoalLineRB – Hillis/Pittman
    3DFB – Hillis/Larsen
    GoalLineFB – Larsen/Hillis
    * * * RECIEVERS * * *
    Split WR1 – Marshall
    Split WR2 – Royal
    Slot WR – Stokley/Scheffler
    Recieving TE – Scheffler
    Blocking TE – Grahmm

  25. texark-fan says:

great work monodono. looking it ever we need to rework eddie royals contract, so he will be happy.
bronco 14441 you and i are the only ones even thinking about larsen as a f/b. so we must be wrong. [h/b hillis f/b larsen and use the 2 back set] hillis could be used as a slot rec without changing the line up. but good work
happy b/d to you 07 elway now ‘couse i’ll forget.
now that we have figured out the new line up who is gona tell the coaches lol

  26. reaper81 says:

I had a quick comment or maybe a couple:
    1. we should trade or cut Dre” I get burned too often”Bly.
    2. we should also trade Selvin Young.
    3. Jamie Winborn should be cut.
    4. Marlon McCree should have left with Shanny.
    3. Marquand Manuel CAREER should be terminated by the NFL.
    5. Josh Bell should be moved back to the practice squad.
    6. Tatum bell should be resigned as result of Selvin Young trade.
    7. make sure Bob Slowik and his brother are both fired.
    8. ???? who is Louis Green ???? did he do anything in 08′
    9. Go all defense in the draft.
    10. win the “SB” in 09′ hands down.

We have obviously the best offense in the whole league hands down, and that is with no running game. once our defense catches up it is all over for every team that is not in orange and blue.

  27. raiderhater78 says:

reaper81 to cut Dre would be stupid he costs to much trading would be good tho. and i agree selvin hasnt proved n e thing to me he did pretty good his rookie year but he never really impressed me tatum has on several times stunned me.Mcree and manual getting rid of them is fine. Jamie Winborn has stepped in as a back up for so many players and done a great job he just needs to play for the team not himself. Green get him outa here 100% with u there. josh bell shouldnt go to the practice squad but unless he does better he shouldnt start he should be with paymah i wanna see jack williams get a shot tho and as for the draft atleast go 90% D at the leastim talkin 6-7 D save offence rookies to undrafted we dont need really n e thing on O

  28. Jack_Fan says:

Rather than continue to debate what the D is going to look like next year and whether or not we can afford the free agents I think we should target.

    How about this…

A 3-4 defense and 6 or 7 new players on the d can NOT be worse than last year. It isn’t possible to be any worse!

It will take time. But, we only need a mediocre D to help lift this O to greatness.

Draft primarily defense for the next 5 years, keep the same d-cordinator and schemes and maybe we can have a Pittsburgh like D.

P.S. Stop defending Bly! Do you think he cares that you don’t want me to bash him? He’s just looking to get PAID!!! My grandmother could make more tackles than him. GO BACK TO DETROIT DRE!!! Go visit some little league practices where they can teach you to “WRAP UP”!

  29. monodono says:

    DT

Ok here’s one of the areas everybody agrees we need the most help lets review. Assumeing (emphasis on the ass cause only Mike Nolan and Josh McDaniels knows what D they will run and I could be the ass.) Coach Nolan will run a 3-4 D. The talk of the town is to get a True NT. Here’s what we have currently on the roster.

    99 Askew, Matthias DT 6′ 5″ 302 26 3rd Michigan State FA-’08
    93 Clemons, Nic DT 6′ 6″ 300 28 2nd Georgia FA-’08
    90 Peterson, Kenny DT 6′ 3″ 300 30 6th Ohio State FA-’07
    75 Powell, Carlton DT 6′ 3″ 300 23 R Virginia Tech D5b-’08
    63 Robertson, Dewayne DT 6′ 1″ 308 27 6th Kentucky T (NYJ)-’08
    95 Shaw, Josh DT 6′ 2″ 290 29 5th Michigan State FA-’08
    79 Thomas, Marcus DT 6′ 3″ 305 23 2nd Florida D4-’07

Not as terrible a class as I keep hearing but do they fit in?
First off I don’t know a damn thing about Mr. Askew other than whats on his bio, but his size suggests He may be able to add the weight needed to play NT aslo He has had knee problems and this will be His 4th season. To many questions here to evaluate.I say keep him on the practice squad.
Nic Clemons, now I like this guy, lot’s of upside no injuries to speak of He’s young this will be his 3rd year and at 6’6″ 300 He too could add weight to play NT my suggestion to Him is to get in the gym and try the long snap to see if you can do it, if you can thats just one more reason The Broncos should keep you.
Kenny Peterson is a keeper but at back up maybe they move him to end. P.S. He played at McKinley High in Canton.
Carlton Powell last years rookie that tore His achiles tendon, thats a hard injury to over come but I hear He’s doing Great in thr Gym, we’ll see.
Dewayne Robertson another keeper but as a back up.
Josh Shaw will be a casualty this year, sorry Josh not that He can’t play He is a gamer just not the right fit in Denver.
Macus Thomas isa keeper and the one guy who might be a starter although He will most likely be a back up. He also played FB in high school you think he might want to try it again at the goal line? Ya gotta love a 6’3″ 305 player who can do a standing back flip. Lot’s of upside here and only His 3rd year, Hopefully He opens up this year.

so in my estimation we need at least 2 True NT.

    TIME OF POSSESSION ! ! !

    GO BRONCOS ! ! !

  30. monodono says:

    DE
Here is what’s on the current roster.

    96 Crowder, Tim DE 6′ 4″ 275 23 2nd Texas D2-’07
    92 Dumervil, Elvis DE 5′ 11″ 260 24 3rd Louisville D4b-’06
    91 Ekuban, Ebenezer DE 6′ 4″ 275 32 10th North Carolina T (Cle)-’05
    60 Engelberger, John DE 6′ 4″ 260 32 9th Virginia Tech T (SF)-’05
    98 McBean, Ryan DE 6′ 5″ 290 24 2nd Oklahoma State FA-’08
    94 Moss, Jarvis DE 6′ 6″ 265 24 2nd Florida D1- ‘07

Fist off I think Coach Nolan may move look at his DT and move one or two to the End we will see.
Tim Crowder is a Keeper and a starter in my book hopefully He worls hard to get there this off season.
Elvis Doomervil is a Keeper and starter but may be at an OLB position. Can you see him intersepting a pass at the goal line and running it 100yrds for a TD? Well maybe not but I can see Him Blitzing from that position.
Ebeneezer Ekuban will be in His 11th season and has had some injury problems, Sorry to say He may be a casualty even though The Broncos could use his experience and presance.
The same could be said about John Engleberger in His 10th season with sholder issues.
Ryan McBean, I know nothing about this man except what’s in his bio, looks good though, practice squad?
Jarvis Moss this could be His best year as a Bronco but as an OLB we will see Keeper.

So in my humble opinion The Broncos need 2 DE.

    TIME OF POSSESSION ! ! !

    GO BRONCOS ! ! !

  31. monodono says:

texark-fan, I’m still evaluating player’s and have’nt figured out any thing yet. LB’s are next.
Jack_Fan, let’s try not to be too harsh on the players they are people too and Dre Bly is a Great Humanitarian and works hard for His community. It’s one thing to not want Him to play for The Broncos but keep it at that. Like they say act like you’ve been there. I suggest you go read His Bio, He’s not out there just looking to be paid.

  32. jmanz22 says:

bly is a keeper we could just use better safties though so dont talk about bly not as good as champ and geez maby bly would be a better safety idk but they need d help

  33. Battle_E says:

I was wondering if you could tell me what Denver is going to do with 12 running backs/full backs going into the off season? Normally there is usually 8 maybe 9. Normally they carry 4 or 5 running backs and 3 or 4 full backs. What ones should Denver keep and what ones should they let go?

  34. Battle_E says:

IMO Bly and Champ had two problems this year injuries not withstanding.

The first one was the lack of a pass rush in passing downs.

The second was no Safety help behind them.

Both Champ and Bly live on jumping routes and going the other way with the ball. This is accomplish by two things IMO.

First the QB is harassed and is forced to throw early and/or off balanced.

Second the WR doesn’t have time to a double move.

Both are the result of a good pass rush for the most part.

  35. raiderhater78 says:

i could go either way with bly he can go and it wont hurt me and he could stay and id be stoked but 1 thing in his deffense is YOU try playin the opposite side of Champ im sure any 1 else would get burned more than a few times too i mean the man is a god at that possition. ok so ur the QB of a nother team what side are u gunna throw to more the 1 with champ or dre. im throwin over dre’s short A** lol. ok so give the man props he does a good job considerin the situation. and i doubt we will ever be a straight up 3-4 team we will prolly be a 4-3/3-4 team

  36. raiderhater78 says:

Id like to point out to all u guys who said Shanny is the Chiefs new head coach to re check ur sources cause according to NFL.com Haley from the Cards is the chiefs new HC. I realize this wasnt the blog but just provin some people wrong. Believe in ur man Shanny he wouldnt play us like that.

    Revising Your Comments

I had a quick comment or maybe a couple:
    1. we should trade (NOT CUT) Dre “i get burned too often”Bly.
    2. we should NOT trade Selvin Young.
    3. Jamie Winborn should HAVE A SALARY cut.
    4. Marlon McCree should have left with Shanny. AGREE
    3. Marquand Manuel CAREER should be terminated by the NFL. AGREE
    5. Josh Bell should be RELAESED.
    6. Tatum bell should be resigned.
    7. make sure Bob Slowik, his brother, AND THE REST OF THE 2008 DEFFENSIVE STAFF is fired.
    8. ???? who is Louis Green ???? did he do anything in 08′ ANSWER: ALL HE DID WAS BREAK HIS NECK, NOTHING ELSE.
    9. Go MOSTLY defense in the draft.
    10. MAKE THE PLAYOFFS in 09′ hands down.

  38. monodono says:

Ok, finally some time on to LB’s.

    52 Green, Louis LB 6′ 3″ 237 29 5th Alcorn State FA-03
    57 Haggan, Mario LB 6′ 3″ 263 28 6th Mississippi State FA-’08
    53 Koutouvides, Niko LB 6′ 2″ 238 27 5th Purdue UFA (SEA)-’08
    46 Larsen, Spencer FB/LB 6′ 2″ 240 24 R Arizona D6-’08
    58 Webster, Nate LB 6′ 0″ 232 31 9th Miami (Fla.) UFA-’06
    55 Williams, D.J. LB 6′ 1″ 240 26 5th Miami (Fla.) D1-’04
    51 Winborn, Jamie LB 5′ 11″ 230 29 8th Vanderbilt FA-’07
    59 Woodyard, Wesley LB 6′ 1″ 230 22 R Kentucky CFA- ‘08

Allright, to get started I would like to say I think Coach Nolan will want to move atleast one DE to the OLB position so just keep that in mind.
Louis Green Has been a ST standout and has done well when He was asked to fill in. This will be His 6th yr in The NFL without any major injuries and has good speed keeper.
Mario Haggan, He might get a chance to play a bigger role at OLB but I have my doubts about His over persuit. We shall see.
Niko Koutouvides, has played well on ST but as a back up He looked lost on the field and I believe He is over paid, I’m not impressed. Please Niko prove me wrong.
Spencer Larson, played His best at ILB and tremendous up side, Keeper.
Nate Webster, I like Nate, He sure has put in His time this will be his 10th yr. I just don’t trust his Knee and I think He will test the FA waters, good luck Nate.
DJ Williams is a Keeper, I hope His knee is good.
Jamie Winborn, I love this player but His size and it being His 9th season may push Him out. I’m still going with Keeper. I also like that He is on ST and He played FB in High school, Jamie you wanna give FB a try?
Wesley woodyard, It’s His 2nd yr. pure stud, play’s ST and spent time as SS, Keeper.

We may be better at LB than we think especially if Elvis Doomervil or Jarvis Moss can make the transition. I’m going to say 1 LB.

    TIME OF POSSESSION ! ! !

    GO BRONCOS ! ! !

  39. monodono says:

Allright here we are with Safeties, in my opinion The second biggest need on The TEAM. Here’s the current roster.

    36 Barrett, Josh S 6′ 2″ 225 24 R Arizona State D7a-’08
    39 Fox, Vernon S 5′ 10″ 203 29 7th Fresno State FA-’08
    43 Jones, Herana-Daze S 5′ 11″ 205 26 4th Indiana FA-’08
    33 Manuel, Marquand S 6′ 0″ 213 29 7th Florida UFA-’08
    20 McCree, Marlon S 5′ 11″ 204 31 8th Kentucky FA-’08

First off I’d like to say I would’nt mind seeing more of Wesley Woodyard at the FS position just to see if He could prosper there before I would commit to that prospect, but He has the right frame for it at 6’1″ 215lbs. perfect.

Josh Barrett, performed beautifully at SS in His first yr. Keeper
Vernon Fox, play’s on ST and did ok as a back up, He has experience this will be in His 8th season but His size may be what keeps him from being here next yr. Recievers are just getting bigger and stronger.
Herana-Daze Jones, also play’s ST a plus and He did ok as a back up but His size and Knee leave questions.
Marquand Manuel, I actually liked His play but it will be His 8th season and He has’nt been dominant and this is what The Broncos have missed at this position for the last 3+ years.
Marlon McCree, reading His bio makes your heart worm, what a Great guy. But this will be His 9th season and that ankle kept him from playing well.

WE NEED DOMINANT SAFETIES! Plane and simple The Broncos need 3 Safeties.

    TIME OF POSSESSION ! ! !

Josh Bell, This will be His second yr. and probablly played just good enough not to get cut but i have a hard time calling Him a Keeper.
Dre Bly, The guy can play but also His 11th yr. Keeper?
Rashod Moulton, don’t know Him enough.
Karl Paymah, play’s ST and did well as fill in and back up. Keeper
Jack Williams, again don’t know Him but at 5’9″ I can’t call him a keeper

With the size of recievers getting bigger I think The Broncos should look a little closer at their youth at the CB position. We’ve got two CB’s going into their 11th season and have to look to the future of this position. The Broncos need 2 CB’s.

monodono – your homework is turning out to be VERY impressive. Keep it up!! You’ve got some great points and ideas.

All I can say is if we don’t keep Champ whoever gives him the boot is a complete and utter idiot!!!! Now, if its his choice to leave/retire than I can respect that coming from him. I really really hope he stays at least another year, by next season he could be back to his normal hard-hitting intercepting-crazy self. We really need him back out there for our defense. His kind of leadership is essential to our ever ailing defense. And I’ll be one of those people that says both Champ & Bly should be our starters on CB next season… regardless of what anyone on here thinks of Bly – the guy has some undeniable talent and we need him!! End of story.

But I will agree with monodono once again, the 2 of them are getting up there and are very tenured vets, sooner or later we’ll have to look at getting some people to replace them. Hopefully they both last another season or two. There’s nothing I would love more than to see Champ get a SB win and ring and everything that comes with a SB. That just puts more pressure on Cutler and he knows that but, Champ definitely deservese to go out like Elway did – on top of the world. It would be a complete shame to see Champ retire without a SB win with the Broncos.

    With faith…
    GO BRONCOS in ’09!!!!

And MY BEST GUESS of What The Broncos Need the most and not in any order of need are:

    1 QB FA
1 RB if one fall’s in our lap in the draft.
2 or 3 TRUE FB’s FA or draft
    1 WR
    1 TE
    1 G
1 LS hopefully we can find someone allready on The TEAM if not, a combo LS/G.
    2 TRUE NT
    3 DE
1 LB FA or if one falls in our lap in Draft
    3 SAFETIES!
    2 CB’s
WOW! What a list. What do you guy’s and Lady think? Please give me some input as to what you think The Coaches are thinking.

  44. BroncoAussie says:

Hey monodono, quick question about your LB. You mentioned that Moss and Doom might translate to LB. Just wondering on your thoughts if they can’t. Does that make them expendable?

  45. monodono says:

BroncoAussie, Great question. I think Evis Doomervil at 5’11″ 260 would become a situational DE at best. But Jarvis Moss at 6’6″ 265 might be able to put a little more beef on and do allright. That’s just my opinion and GOD know’s I’m wrong a lot.

  46. BroncoAussie says:

Hey monodono, looking at your list and its a long list of players, I have some input.

Agree with needing a good backup QB
Agree on a RB, don’t be surprised if it is Beanie Wells in the first if he falls to us.
2 or 3 FB I think is a stretch, definitely need 1 and maybe a second for insurance.
WR? Maybe, probably a late round draft pick or undrafted player.
TE? Not a really need but maybe a good back up. Also Mike Leach was our long snapper last year not sure if he is still around though.
Agree on the G, NT, and DE needs. Need a lot of help on DL if Moss and Doom play LB.
Definitely need one good LB that can play inside, think we are sweet with outside guys.
Agree on needing a whole bunch more safeties don’t think many of last years guys will be around expect for Barrett because he has a good up side.
And need two young corners, Champ and Dre are getting up in years.

  47. BroncoAussie says:

So Moss is more likely to get a starting spot and Doom as a situational guy. Do you think that is a bit of a waste of talent if Doom can only play some situations? It would seem that Doom would become the expendable guy because he would have more value on a team that can use his talents rather than on the bench half the time for us. I think if you follow that train of thought wouldn’t it make more sense to trade Doom to a team that can use him? Say for draft picks or a play we need.

  48. monodono says:

    BroncoAussie,
I was speculating P Hillis might move to RB and S Larson will move to ILB He played very well there in my opinion and we may not need an ILB, and that only leaves A. Pinnock at FB. He look’s great on paper but we never got to see Him on the field so I have to question it, plus I would like to see atleast one true FB on The TEAM.
Mike Leach is still the ONLY LS on The TEAM and He will be playing His 10th season. Good player just trying to look at the future and have a back up.
Your right TE is just speculation not a need.
THNX for the input, what do you think The Coaches are thinking?

  49. monodono says:

Broncos Aussie, Great point about DOOM, I would have a hard time letting Him go but if He cant make that transition, it very well may happen. Who or what do you think He may be traded for and where?

  50. monodono says:

Moss may become a back up as well if The Coaches move Kenny Peterson or Dewayne Robertson to the DE position. Tim Crowder and Jarvis Moss may become back up if that happen’s.
    So much speculation……
I feel like were getting some where now.
