The 2007 season is in the books. It wasn’t the kind of year the Broncos wanted, and one can safely predict there will be changes.
It will be interesting to see what changes are made. Assuming there are some, one would expect the first ones would come to the coaching staff. Then beginning with free agency, the roster will be subject to microscopic evaluation.
I wish I could predict what will happen to the coaching staff. But I just don’t know what Coach Shanahan might or might not do. When a defense gives up 409 points, tied for the fourth most in Broncos’ history, it doesn’t take a genius to say that something has to get better.
At the same time, for as well as the Broncos moved the football, they didn’t do as well scoring points. So clearly the offense needs to make more strides, too.
I do think the Broncos have some good core players on offense. I am still a huge Jay Cutler fan, it is scary to think that Brandon Marshall can and will get even better, Tony Scheffler became a threat this year, Daniel Graham was a huge addition, Brandon Stokley is locked down to a three-year contract and the offensive line should get Tom Nalen back.
Yes, there are questions. Will Travis Henry or Javon Walker return? Can the Broncos again have a dominating running game? And going right to the bottom line, will they score more points?
On defense, the picture is less clear to me. If the Broncos decide to change defensive coordinators, they would have their third defensive coordinator in three years in 2008. If they don’t make a change, can familiarity with the system coupled with roster changes provide the needed improvement?
It will be interesting to see how this plays out in the weeks and months to come. When the offseason is here, all that we are left with is to follow the developments.
It won’t be long until the heat of summer brings another training camp and, along with it, the hope of another Super Bowl run.
Thank you so much for reading this blog all season long and thank you to those who have shared your thoughts. I have read all your comments and appreciate your taking time to write.
Enjoy the offseason…and the changes that are bound to come.
All the best,
Mike

I am exremely curious to see what happens on the coaching staff, especially the Defensive coordinator and Offensive coordinator (or whoever is calling the plays). It’s difficult to predict what will happen as far as players go until coaching issues are figured out.
-Winborn played great in his starts, Webster showed flashes and William is solid, but I would still like to see Denver go after Lance Briggs.
-I hope Denver resigns Foxworth and Paymah. Paymah has gotten progressively better and Foxworth is like a Troy Brown.
-O-line didn’t play that bad for first year together and first year for a lot of them. Nalen would help but he isn’t coming back for long. Hamilton likely will not return. Free Agency will be best chance to find a player to help right away.
I could see Denver trading Travis Henry and possibly even Javon Walker with the emergence of Selvin Young and Brandon Marshall and signing of Stokely. I think it would be worth it if they could get at least a 2nd round pick and a 3rd round pick or a trade for a good O-lineman. That way they would have a pick to draft a WR/KR because they still need help at safety and on the defensive line with their 1st and 2nd round picks. The draft is full of good DT’s and Kenny Phillups is the only top flight safety this year. Craig Steltz probably will last till 2nd but Kenny Phillups would be better pick if Sedrick Ellis is gone.
rd 1 pick 12- S–Kenny Phillups
rd 2 -DT-Pat Simms, Demarcus Granger, Kentwan Balmer, Frank Okam
rd 2 from trade of Henry–DT-see last pick and take whos left
rd 3 from trade of Walker- WR/KR Donnie Avery, Andre Caldwell, Lavelle Hawkins
rd 3 -traded for Jimmy Kennedy
rd 4-7- WR/KR,OL,DT,LB- best of whats left for last rds
Any thoughts anyone…
Looking forward to a great offseason and a much better season next year…
GO BRONCOS
im really interested to see what john lynch does this offseason and to see who they draft if you look at their personel they have no holes offence is solid and they have an ok line in deumevil moss crowder the question is dt safty abdullah is good and if lynch doesnt return convert foxworth to safty GO BRONCOS
fire Travis Henry is a trouble for Broncos
on the real we need OLINE and ONE More beefy d lineman….please if you have a chance draft graves from auburn 6’3 255 DE, OLB a beast….yall keep mentioning Phillips but dude from GA TECH is a monster and he will be available in the later rounds
I really liked what I saw with a lot of the younger players (Young,Scheffler,Cutler,Marshall,Dumerville,Williams & a few others) I think we have a great core group. We need to get rid of Henry, Young is just as good, and besides Henry is way to much of a Liability. I also really think we need to add a top flight LB. We need to get a little more help on our D-line to stop the run. I think we should do everything possible to keep Javon Walker, if we have him, Marshall, Stokley, Scheffler, Graham & Young in the back field we would have one of the Top ranked offenses in football.
If we are able to stay healthy next year with a small tweak to personel (four of five guys), I think we could have a good run at the title next year.
Hears hoping for a better 2008 season!!!!
Thanks to Mr. Rice for writing your blogs and taking time to write. Its been fun coming on to all these different blogs and reading and sharing all the different opinions and being able to vent out my frustration although that is definitely not what I had in mind for this season.
Where do I begin? There are going to be so many changes and improvements, its mind-blowing but very much needed. As for the coaching, something needs to desperately change on Defense… I would be shocked and actually quite appalled if none of the coaches said that we’re fine on the D. Our D had some very minor strong points but like Mike said… 409 points… that’s ridiculous and quite embarrassing. I can’t believe that is actually true, that’s going to haunt me for quite some time. And either Bates needs to go or he needs a 100% complete new strategy for how he coaches… I think its time to let him know, what he’s been doing isn’t working. I would hope after the season we just had he would get the picture but then again maybe he’s just that crazy.
As for Lynch, I really hope he stays. I really believe he’s got more spark in him for him to give to this team. I’m having a hard enough time trying to even fathom the idea of letting go of Rod Smith on this team, I don’t think I could handle watching Lynch go as well. This is starting to remind me of when both Elway & Davis left after the last Superbowl… Davis almost didn’t come back for the first one I believe it was. Anyway, I say Lynch needs to give it another go and depending on how bad or good our D is next season then I’d love to see him go out on a good season, better yet a Superbowl. I’d love to him go with a Superbowl ring with the Broncos.
And for Rod Smith, I love you man!!! I’ll never forget any of the memories I have of you on this team, I’m about ready to cry just writing this. I really think they should retire his number… no offense to anyone but like Elway’s number, no one deserves to wear #80 other than Smith. I mean who would want to see some other QB wearing #7… I’d be offended big time. Every time I see the number 7 or 80 or even 30 I think of those guys that wore those numbers and how no one else should have it.
Going on to the offense, I think we were just kind of stuck in the middle of good and bad. We had some fantastic games, both games against KC and the Pittsburgh game was pretty good. Cutler has improved so much, its like Deja Vu all over again. He truly reminds me of a young Elway, with so much potential and a very very bright future. He’s going to be scary good next season and I honestly can’t wait!! And as for Marshall – WOW – he’s as scary good as it gets. He’s going to be a huge threat to other teams next season… I think I’m more excited than he is. Scheffler is like a little ball of fire out there… we may have saw more of him last season but I think both him & Cutler will shine brighter than the sun next year. They all have such great potential, I know they’ll work on what they need to and they’ll be the talk of the NFL next year so much that everyone who’s not a Bronco fan will be sick of it. I’ll love every minute of it. Stokley I think we’ll come back strong as well… the same goes for Graham and definitely Nalen. I think Nalen still has alot left in him for this team too, its going to be so hard to let all these veterans go after what I’ve seen them do for this team. Its not easy.
On to Shanahan, I believe in this guy more than I believe in myself. He’s been one heck of a coach and like some of our veteran players, he’s still got some good years left with this team. But whenever he goes, its going to be like a stab to the heart. Next year is going to all about change and improvement for this team and I think Shanny is going to be a big part of setting this team up with what we need to go on whenever he goes.
And really, I know alot of people probably don’t like hearing this kind of stuff but I don’t care, its true – our team is on the verge of rebuilding if they’re not doing so already. I mean its not that hard to see… we’ll definitely be getting an almost new coaching staff, alot of veteran players are starting to consider leaving and where does that leave us? Rebuilding with new young but talented players and new coaches. By now alot of the youngins are getting used to this or have by now and have pretty much adjusted themselves to this team and whatever strategy it is we use, which I don’t think we had one this season but surely someone around here gets the picture. The growing pains and rebuilding are the tough part obviously but its going to be worth it when Cutler, Marshall, Scheffler, hopefully Walker, Stokley all have gotten used to each other and playing 16 games. I saw Cutler’s press conference after the game last night and something he said made complete sense as to why he may not of been exactly what we all expected but by next season I think he’ll be up to most expectations. He was saying that last year he really didn’t know what playing 16 games could do to you, that it drains you out mentally and physically. I couldn’t agree more. I’ve never playing 16 games like that or anything remotely close to the stuff they all go through but it makes complete sense. And he even said that Marshall went through the same thing and I guess you could say those were part of the growing pains… the young guys adjusting to playing such a physical game for as long as they did. Its no wonder why QB’s start to lose their edge by the time they get to Brett Favre’s age… that’s just the way it is.
So I think I’ve said pretty much all that I’ve wanted to say and yes I know its very long. There’s just so much to say about this season that I could go on and on. We really need to improve and I think we’ll be a whole new team next season. I’m relieved that this season is over but now I can’t wait to see how well our guys play next year.
Last but definitely not least, my prayers and thoughts go out to D-Will’s family and Damien’s family. Everytime the New Year comes I’ll always think of those two guys. I can’t believe its been a year already… this stinks. May they Rest In Peace. Same goes for Sean Taylor, I hope they find the little turds who did this to him and D-Will. Justice needs to be served!!! Happy New Year!!!!!
GO BRONCOS!!!!!!!!!
Well I couldn’t read that last post, it’s too long! But my thoughts are that the players seem good, they seem fast enough, strong enough, quick enough. But there’s something else wrong. I think it’s the mental part of the game. Either the coaches are not teaching the players well enough, or the players aren’t smart enough, or they don’t have the die-hard non-stop attitude to be great. I don’t know, but it seems like they should have been better. They looked great some weeks and other weeks they were pathetic. Maybe it was the lack of leadership. The most talented players are the youngest, or the newest, and then there’s Lynch. So, maybe it’s just going to take a few years for the team to establish great leadership, not good leadership.
is jim bates fired yet?
If you watch the better teams in the NFL, they just play better. I think the coaching is pretty bad with the Broncos. They don’t seem to have good defensive schemes and they don’t seem to have a flow in offensive play calling. Not enough creativity.
I THINK THEY SHOULD GET A STRONG RUNNING BACK THAT CAN RUN 20 TIMES A GAME . I WISH WE WOULD HAVE GOT TANK JOHNSON FROM THE BEARS I THINK HE COULD HAVE HELPED OUR DEFENSE. WE NEED WARRICK HOLDMAN BACK AND HEALTHY. SEE YA NEXT YEAR!1!
FIRE BATES AND FIRE TRAVIS HENRY
I was delighted to see the Broncos play an almost perfect game. The offense ran exceptionally well on the number one rushing defense. After the first two series, the defense played the run very well. The special teams were not spectacular, but did a better tha usual job. But, the win took us from number 8 draft pick to number 12. I sure hope it doesn’t make a difference.
If the first 6 items happen, get the best D lineman, Linebacker and O lineman you can buy in that order of importance.
Draft for the best athlete avilable the first three rounds, then draft for your weakest position(s).
If I were in charge I’d make several major changes:
1) Trade Walker. If you can’t trade him, cut him. The knee is gone.
2) Trade Henry. If you can’t trade him, cut him. Did you notice that very soon in the game Youngs reflief wasn’t Henry?
3) Find the best hip replacement specialist you can for Rod. Rod is, make that should be, considering the incompetents voting for HOF, a first ballot HOF. But, even if he undegoes the abriment operation again and it works, he’ll be a number three wide reciever at best. Not a good usage of cap money.
4) Hire Rod Smith as wide receiver coach.
5) Encourage Lynch to retire. He’s great on run defense, but did you see how many times he got beat easily yesterday? Again, not good use of cap money.
6) Sign Elam to a two or three year contract.
7) Don’t fire any coaches. Am I crazy??? When a new coach comes in, be it Special teams, Offense, or Defense, it takes a season for the respective players to fully understand and feel comfortable with the scheme being used. This is not something we need. We need consistancy.
May all our personal and Broncos dreams be fulfilled in 2008!!!
Man i was watching Walkers Interview as he cleaned out his locker and he made it sounded like he was done beeing a bronco…He is a b**ch…hes jus doin diz cuz the Broncos had a bad season and Marshall is way better den him…so bye Javon Walker and go f**k up another team cuz we dont need B**ches on this team
Bailey#1 I don’t think that at all. I think he is just fustraited like everybody else on the team. I totally think they are way better than there record. On Walker he is a good receiver i had knee surgary and it takes at least 2 years to get better. Not that the broncos can wait but letting a good player go is a horrible decision unless we can get Chad Johnson. And that probably won’t happen. So if he can come back healthy we will have a great receiving core.
walker what a baby!!!
I know it’s been said bring back coyer! he is aggressive and not afraid of putting pressure on the QB. seems we found a starter at line backer in winborn, he is a freak, I know I am a minority but I hope this is lynch’s last year he is only affective as a fourth linebacker, he is a liability in the pass defense, I would like to see abdulla as free saftey and foxworth as strong safety maybe fox can show that over priced DB dre bly how to tackle, and cover has anyone noticed that most all deep pass completions were againist bly. I would still like to see denver covet a middle linebacker through a trade using walker as bait move DJ back to strong side backer and winborn to weak side.and now to upset the other half! mr. shannahan it’s time to look at being just a head coach quit deviding your time if you want to continue play calling give up the front office, the game is starting to pass you by, your play calling in the begginning and at the end of a game is predictable why do you think kubiak beat our ass’s last but not least bates you suck you all took a top five defense coyers defense and made it into a bottom feeder, I don’t know who you BS to get the job but you screwed the pooch oh ya happy new year
One more item on the to do list:Trade Dre Bly back to the Lions. Nobody else would be dumb enough to take him. Want a quick TD? Just do a double move on Bly. Bang, Zoom. TD!!!!!
I’m not going to pass judgments on the defense as of yet. Injuries to Jarvis Moss, John Lynch and Champ Bailey really affected our schemes negatively, so perhaps if we can have some continuity with our personnel, things can get better. I know we need to draft some key defensive players once again, you can never have too much depth on the D-line. Travis Henry should probably go, but it’s worth it to keep Javon Walker around. Defenses will quiver in their cleats when they have to face a healthy Walker, a freakish Marshall and an excellent Stokely. The team is poised to contend once again and the inexperience and uncertainty of ’07 is upon us. I feel great about our prospects. I can hardly wait until next August! Jim Bates should be gone, 409 points surrendered is unacceptable.
I knw he is frustrated…i dont know….Maybe Shanny can talk him in to saying but for right know im callin him a whimp and when i play with the Denver Broncos on Madden 08 i always will bench him until i find out what he is gonna do..if he stays good but if he goes i brand him a baby 4 life
What the broncos should do is fire Bates and hire Brian Billick and when he fixes our d he’ll get another shot at Head coaching. I also wouldn’t mind picking up Marty Shottinheimer as GM since he can bring in the right tallent and not waste draft choices like we end up doing every year.
hey walker would probably lead this team in catches if he wasnt hurt all year…thats the main reason Marshall got so many balls…remember the first 3 games..walker led the league in catches!!! almost 9 a game…him and cutty were huge those first 2 weeks in getting us those wins..with big catches on 3rd down…give the guy a break….only one year ago…he had a man die in his arms…..i dont know how many of yalll been thru that but i know others that have and it took them alot longer to get over it then it seems it took Javon….do u Javon….ill go for ya….fan since FSU days
The first thing we need to do is resign Elam. He is still one of the best kickers in the league, only missing 4 kicks longer than 40 yards, one being longer than 50.
I like the idea of bringing in Brian Billick to replace Bates, but he might end up as the head coach of another team. We might want to also look to see if Rex Ryan is going to be on a team and possibly go after him. Other than that, no names really come to mind as being available, and a second year might just be what Bates needs to get our defense to where it should be.
I won’t speculate on Smith or Lynch. Both are great players who I would love to see back, but they have to want to come back if they are to contribute. Give them time to make their decisions.
One thing we really need to address is our lines. I got sick of seeing our defensive line being driven back 5 yards on every running play. Our offensive line had a lot of injuries, but defenders got past them too often this year.
Bly led the team in ints this year. With another year of experience playing across from Champ, he will be better.
We need to keep Walker. I know he was frustrated with how things turned out, but he was also frustrated that he couldn’t help out more due to injuries. He can make a pretty strong comeback next year.
As far as running back, Henry never really impressed me. With him not playing the last game of the year and his poor performance in games before that, I expect him to be gone next year. We keep Young and Hall and grab a rookie either late draft or undrafted. You can never have enough running backs.
I guess i kinda enjoyed watching the broncos this season. Yes they were inconsistent, and our record was not up to bronco country standards, but we have a lot of young talent, and they can only get better.
I really hope we do keep walker, cutler would have so many options then opposing defenses would not know who to gameplan against. I love selvin young, but i wouldn’t mind having a change of pace back like marion barber. That guy is a beast, and i think a back like him would work great in our run blocking scheme.
Defense needs a major overhaul, losing Wilson and pretty much all of our lineman from last year didn’t help our rush defense that much. I would love to know how #56 is doing, if their was any chance at all he could return next year the broncos better go after him. I love DJ but he is better on the outside.
I do not know if i could handle losing Lynch and Smith. I feel Smith is done, but he would make a great WR coach.
I look forward to next year though, hopefully everyone stays healthy next year, if they do, i see a definate shot at the playoffs.
Happy new year everyone.
Firing Bates will do nothing but set us back further. In Miami and Green Bay, his defenses took HUGE steps forward in their second year. These are facts.
Oh, and Billick is an offensive coach, not a defensive coach. Bringing him in to coach the defense would be moronic, at best.
look, i know everyone is going to call me an idiot for this thought…now ever since gary kubiak left, denver has NOT been the same. everyone gives shanahan all the credit for the superbowl wins, but in the light of things it was kubiak stringing together the wins. we need a new head coach, i think shanahan has lost the team personally. (dont know that for fact) i say give billick a job offer and see if shanahan wants the offensive coordinator job. its crazy but the difference between crazy and genius is measured only by success. Sorry but to Real Moose, how can you say billick is an offensive coach??? arent the ravens known all around football because of that defense that he helped build??? and without looking do you know who the offensive and defensive coordinators were the year they won the superbowl?? billick preaches defense!!! green bay and miami did good irregardless of bates, they had a good draft, what can you say! sometimes players make the coaches look good. personally i think they should go after 3 offensive lineman first. and work from the inside out. Saftey, bronx 2729 knows his college football…but you cant guarantee phillips will be there..i dont know JACK about college football but you make him sound like a “LaRon Landry” type of saftey which we need so desperately! getting that win against minnesota really dropped us a couple spots..i would have taken a loss for a higher draft pick…AS LONG AS MY BOY CUTLER IS SHREDDING IT UP i would be willing to take a loss. walker had a life altering situation the past year and im sure he would be wanting to start over somewhere else…it would be too hard to be a bronco anymore. besides he’s a health risk anyways, and always will be…im not sure you could get much out of him because of that reason but do what you will…henry just sucks flat out, sorry to say that about a fellow stoner but hey, truth hurts! Ive said it since his first game, Selvin Young could be the next Terrell Davis, he dont have breakaway speed but man that guy can shrug some tackles..and his feet NEVER stop moving, an admirable trait. Brandon Marshall is a BEAST!!!! the guy is better than Terrell Owens in the open field…just try to tackle the man and you’ll find yourself on your ass! i like that guy right there! Scheffler, i love that guy! he knows where to be on the field and has pretty reliable hands…he just has to get used to cutler’s cannon arm…doesnt that trio of cutler, scheffler, young, and marshall remind you of a trio that won 2 straight superbowls??? elway, sharpe, davis, smith…but ed mcaffrey (probably spelled wrong) is kind of like brandon stokley but 10x’s tougher…do you see it now??? defense…jeez what a mess!!! champ needs traded as much as it hurts to say it..and so does bly…the defensive line could definately use some MASS like 330 lb defensive tackles, strength cannot be coached either…you can only get so strong because there is a limit…the broncos have got to get strength up front…we need to get speedy linebackers…gold is getting up there in age but he knows where to be on the field and is very quick and williams is a god send for that defense… now to fill one more spot…who to get…i dont think you will have holdman filling that spot cause that injury seemed pretty bad…get someone else. im sure there’s someone out there. Defensive backs…the struggling point of that defense, it looks like bailey just isnt the same anymore, i dont see desire when i look at him, its more frustration than anything else, so do him a favor and your cap room and trade or release him for god sakes…i love champ and have lots of money spent on his cards but, this is a business and sometimes things have to be done that people dont want to see but im ready for it…if that means thats what we have to do to be contenders than so be it! dre bly is overrated, it takes more than interceptions to get into the hall of fame…he is good but foxworth is just as good and WAY FASTER! but foxworth can also hit hard enough that he can be a threat at saftey!! i love that idea! paymah is making his name known! he seems to be coming along nicely and making big plays when its one on one…another dude that is fast also! john lynch, i love ya man but if you have to go…go with a smile, i dont think you’ll have a smile on your face playing with the broncos…your time is almost up, maybe, and we are in the process of rebuilding that defense…its safe to say we wont be contending for the superbowl for the next couple years…Tom Brady, Peyton Manning LaDanian Tomlinson…come on get realistic guys. Denver can touch the playoffs but till those guys are gone the broncos are only possible playoff contenders…THATS IT! it hurts to say that but the truth must be exposed!!! one more thing, it deals with the saftey position, we need SPEED IN THE SECONDARY, you cannot be getting beat deep like that (green bay) and expect to make the playoffs!
Thats ok though, Pat Bowlen knows whats up and he needs to fire somebody’s ass! yes, yes all good things happening next year i can feel it…GO CUTLER!!!
I’m not ok with 2007, but this isn’t as dark as it seems if I take this season as a looong offseason heading to 2008. Why? Many new and young players in key roles to really get into the Broncos game. There were many good surprises but also painfull revelations. My fact-wish list…
1)This is the 1st season in some years without a 1000 yds RB. Travis Henry must be traded or fired. The place is covered with Young and Hall, and maybe a new undrafted RB (scouts are good at this).
2)Lynch should retire. I like him, but I think he’s thinking more about his health, family and future out-of-the field (NFL Network maybe?) than anything (and who could blame him?). This position should be the #1 priority to cover.
3)Keep J. Walker. I agree with all those who want to see a Marshall-Stokley-Walker-Scheffler-Graham receiving combo. Give this weapons to Cutler and there will be a good air show to see.
4)Get all help you can to OL. RBs can help better for other tasks than blocking (where are the screen passes??) and Cutler just doesn’t play as well lying on the field this much, don’t you think?
5)The offensive plays…. Hell! Get help in this too!! Offense was so predictable that my pals and me played “guess which play they will do” watching the games on tv and it was an easy-boring game. Just look back at the game vs. Houston… It was sad to see them doing all those old Broncos’ variety of plays (Kubiak’s), and nothing from our side. Shannahan must hire a head to think that for him and let him focus on coaching a whole team (defense included, of course).
6)For defense… well, get one. Good guys + no couch watching + no coordinator + no plan = 409 pts. Why not offer a Titans / Ravens / Steelers def. coord. a job instead of a Packers one? Was the GB defense so great in 2006 that it worthed it? No.
Sorry for the long post. Too much to say.
Cheers and GO Broncos!!
A little too much from the Negative Nacys here… The Broncs were really not as bad as you all think. Lots of transition – everything just hasn’t completely gelled yet. We all had high hopes for the season and sure it hurt when it fell short, but we’re only a couple of players away from completing the puzzle and rocking the league. Clearly the defense has a lot more room to improve than the O, and it won’t take much to bring it together. Everybody saying Lynch is too slow and should retire? Heck, why not move HIM to MLB…? DJ is a great player but more times than not he’s out of position. Sure, having very little D-Line help makes the job harder, but he may not be cut out for it. Move him back outside! Everybody saying trade or cut Walker and Henry? Why?? Yes, they did not perform up to the standard we all hoped they would but you can’t just chuck ‘em like you’re playing Madden or something. These are GOOD players and will really help the team. What happens if Young gets hurt (like he did about as much as Henry)…? What happens if Marshall gets hurt…? Use your freakin’ brains guys. You KNOW there won’t be much chance of us getting equivalent talent in the draft. It would be downright STUPID to throw these guys away. Just a couple more players added and the team mixture solidifies…and the Broncos will be absolutely PREMIERE for many years to come. The future looks great!
Hiring Brian Billick would be the worst move since Shanny took over. He is technically an offensive guy. His defense in Baltimore may have been good, but I certainly wouldn’t give him most of the credit. He originally got the job because of his success as an OFFENSIVE coordinator. He was blessed with great defensive players and coaches, but he failed for 10 years to have anything resembling a good offense. That is sad. They had an excellent O-line, running backs, tight end, and OK wide recievers. BUT, Billick still failed because he never picked the right QB. This is what he prided himself on. They had plenty of opportunities, but he just couldn’t get it done.
Some of you are upset with the offensive play calling, but we did improve as an offense as the season progressed. The offense got better. We moved the ball well, but we struggled inside the red zone. We still had a young team and a lot of injuries. Plus, we were trailing a lot this season because our defense and special teams struggled. That all factors into the trouble. I am confident that we will improve on that next year.
Jay has more experience and it is starting to show. Give the kid a break. Early in the year he forced some throws that were not necessary. But he improved on that. The first 5 games of the year he had more interceptions than touchdowns (6 int. and 4 TDs). BUT, the last 11 games he had 16 TDs and only 8 interceptions. That isn’t bad. The good news is a lot of those interceptions came when he NEEDED to force a play. Cutler ended the year with 20 TDs, 14 Int, 3497 yards passing, and a rating of 88.1. If you forget the Chargers and Raiders games, he had an terrific middle and end of the season starting at week 7. Perhaps if he wasn’t sacked 4 times against the Chargers, then maybe that day would have been better. That is improvement, and that is what is important.
Trade Cowher for defensive coach
Being a long time (over 45 years) Vanderbilt Fan ,,, I can say without reservation – Jay cannot do it alone … He could not do it alone at Vanderbilt … Consequently, he really never learned how to win. As best I can tell, that is the *ONLY* plus missing from this young man’s resume … Once he learns how to win – John who ?
Now, if I could just get the dang Titans to take their boring team and move to Toledo and then, the Broncs to move to Nashville – I would be happy. (ducking)
Happy New Year, folks … May the Broncos make the playoffs and not have to play a round one game next January … ‘no whut I meen, Vern ?
All We Need Is A Few Good O-Linemen And Maybe Two DT’s I Cant See Getting A DE With Dumervil Moss And Im Not Sure If Ekuban Is Coming Back If So Thats Three DE’s WE Got Speed Time For Strength And Sam Adams Just Wasent To Special At DT And It Did Not Help Our O-Line To Have Hamilton And Nalen Hurt Now Lepsis Is Gone WTF?!?!,,,GET LINEMEN IN THE DRAFT OR FREE AGENCY I DONT CARE WE NEED TO COMPETE AND WE NEED A FEW GOOD LINEMEN DESPERATELY,
it’s not cutler that wasent winning it was the team in his first 21 games he has an 88.2 rating peyton manning’s first full season he had a 70 rating and won one more game then cutler did in his first 5 my point cutler is solid there nothing to worry about
Fixing the team
1) New defensive scheme, hire Rex Ryan or Joel Collier
2) If Kenny Phillips is there, grab him, we lost out on Ed Reed by being stupid, lets not do that again.
3) Do whatever it takes to get Frank Okam.
4) Do whatever it takes to get Alan Faneca.
5) Do whatever it takes to get Owen Scmitt, our LT is going to get beat, we need a stud fullback to compensate.
As for Walker, he admits he was out of character and simply frustrated, re-work an incentive laden deal and hope he can stay healthy.
Ditto with Henry.
Get a veteran LT to back up Harris.
