The Broncos’ passing camp is underway. Clearly, there is much attention on the Broncos’ four quarterbacks: Kyle Orton, Brady Quinn, Tom Brandstater and Tim Tebow.
Shortly after the NFL draft, 850 KOA had the chance to talk with Tebow (TT) one two occasions. Here is part two of our interview.
850 KOA: You’ve obviously been blessed with great skills. But it’s apparent you have a broader perspective on things. Where does that come from?
TT: It’s having that relationship with Jesus Christ and knowing that football is just a game. It’s passionate, I love it. I care about it, I want to be the best I can be at football. But at the end of the day, it’s just a game. There are things that are more important. Football gives me a platform. It gives me an opportunity to walk into a hospital and make a kid smile. It gives me the opportunity to talk at a youth ranch and inspire young boys. It gives me an opportunity to talk to a team and tell them you can go reach your dreams if you believe in yourself and outwork your opponent. That’s what I believe football gives me. It gives me the opportunity to share my faith and that’s what I love about it. I believe it’s an obligation to make a difference in people’s lives because you are blessed with a platform. If you go out there and win games and try to win championships, at the end of the day, what does your life really mean? You won some games. But those trophies, they’re going to rust and they’re not going to mean much one day. If you make a difference in people’s lives, that’s going to make an impact and that’s going to last forever.
850 KOA: You find out you’re one of the first picks, you come to Denver, you meet the press, you talk to the coach and you fly home. How is your life right now and what exactly does it entail?
TT: My life is wonderful. I am truly blessed. I had a great time flying to Denver and getting to know everybody. Right now, it’s pretty much just learning the offense. As we speak I have film in front of me and I’m just trying to understand this Bronco offense.
850 KOA: Despite the fact you are in Florida, you’re still trying to learn everything and getting ready to be a Denver Bronco?
TT: I’m trying to learn, I’m trying to get better every day. For me, the great thing about it is it’s not work. It’s something I love to do and so even if I didn’t get paid for it and it was something I could go do for fun I would do it. I do it with all my heart.
850 KOA: After the Broncos drafted you, Coach McDaniels was quick to point out that he stole some of the Florida offense that you ran in college under Coach Urban Meyer. Are there any similarities you can see between the Broncos’ offense and what you ran at Florida?
TT: Yes, there are some similarities with some of our reads, some of our progressions, a lot of our empty package, a lot of our five-wide. The verbage is different. For me, for a lot of the empty (formations), it’s just translating the verbage. I can pick up on it pretty quick because we did a lot of similar things. That package is pretty easy to pick up and learn. A lot of the other stuff is a little bit different. It’s things that have evolved with Coach McDaniels. But overall it’s a great offense. I’m excited about learning it. I’m excited about being in it and understanding it so it becomes second nature for me.
850 KOA: Now matter how good a player was in college, he must, in a sense, start over when he moves on to the NFL. What will your approach be at mini-camps and training camp?
TT: There are two important ingredients you need to have. Number one, you need to be humble. You have to know that you don’t know it all. You have to understand that there are a lot of people that have been doing this for a while and those people can teach you a lot. And then you have to come in with the drive, with the hunger to work hard and get better and soak up knowledge and talk to the other guys and learn and try to improve every day. For the rookies coming in, our number one goal needs to be to do those things and earn respect from the older guys, not with our words but our actions.
850 KOA: When you were playing in Coach Meyer’s offense at Florida, how much of that offense was called in the huddle as opposed to how much did you have at the line of scrimmage to change a play?
TT: We’d call something in the huddle and we’d go up to the line and have a lot of things, run-run checks, run-pass checks, pass-pass checks. We’d go up there (to the line) with three or four different calls where if they give us this look, we’re going to check to this. If they give us this look, we’re going to check to this. Our philosophy at Florida was we want to be in the best possible play in the best possible scenario. We didn’t want to lock ourselves down to just being in one play. Coach (Meyer) gave me the ability to have freedom at the line of scrimmage to be able to audible. Even if we know we want to run the ball, we still have audibles to three or four different runs depending on the (defensive) looks. We always went up there with multiple options but a lot of it was game plan. You’d say, versus this look, we’re going to run “x,” versus this look, we’re going to run “z” and we’d always have those different looks we would be able to change it to. I think that gave us a lot more success at Florida because we had the ability to try to get into a better play.
As always, feel free to post thoughts you might have about Tebow or the Broncos’ quarterbacks. I appreciate your reading.
Sincerely,
Mike

Possible maybe in 2011 and forward, but this year I’ll mortgage my house to place a bet against it, just saying. Whenever you guys need a dose of reality, don’t worry I’ll deliver, LOL.
bay,
I wouldn’t even sniff the 500 yards rushing but I would bet the farm that Tebow would get 3,500 yards passing if he were the starter all season.
Buzzkiller..LOL
Hey just dreamin’
And to ask for him to run for 500 yards in a year would be nothing short of suicidal, Elway’s best years running he had 258 yds in 1990 (his best), 257 in 86, 255 in 91, 253 in 85 and 249 in 96. And he was a pretty good running QB if memory serves right. But don’t get me wrong, it’s fun to see you guys excited like we’ve found the motherload.
buzzkillinorcrush…ha
OC, you are not exactly puting yourself on the spot when you say Tebow could get 3500 in the air, since the guy you say is so awful, Orton, put up over 3800 yards last year, LOL.
just kidding…lol
I have been called much worse, still feel the need to call it as I see it, you know the drill, LOL.
yeah, I was hoping you would bet me a Cool Orange Tebow jersey on that one…lol
Probably any one of our three QB’s could get 3,500 playing a full 16 games…
honestly i think Tebow will be a good quarterback as a starter this year.. If he is our future QB why not start him theis year instead of Orton?? If the coaching staff has him as our ‘future qb’ then the future should start with our preseason opener with Tebow as a starter ya know what i mean. IF HE IS READY!!!
Numbers that make more sense to look forward to in the future for Tebow in a McD offense are like Tom Brady’s numbers:
4398 in 2009
4806 in 2007
and 4110 in 2005.
Now I think that’s the neighborhood we’ve got to aim for if we’re to go back to the top, right?
OC, I’m not that easy to set a trap to, LOL.
NN….
The Future is now!!! I LIKE IT!
ILMSDTB!!!!!
NastyNate and Orange_crusher,
I use to think the same thing..However, if you sit down and think about it, the best thing for all of our qbs is to let orton start this year. The reason i say this is because, mcdaniels system is complex and hard to learn. Many players have admitted to that. With that being said, tom brandstater and orton have the best knowledge about the system. By letting quinn and tebow sit behind orton this year they can learn from his mistakes and learn the system to be ready by next year. BY putting them in the fire now, the outcome could turn out badly. The only reason orton had to last year is because we had no other option. Now we have the luxury of these 2 great qbs to learn the new system. Its kinda like saving your best for last. Next year following the end of the season, or a while before the draft orton will be traded to another team for a player or draft picks. Prob a 2and or 3rd. I can see buffalo making a move before the season or after.
Tebow in:
2010 = 3800 yards passing, 200 rushing 10-6 Playoff loss
2011 = 4300 yards passing, 150 rushing 12-4 AFC title loss
2012 = 4800 yards passing, 100 rushing 13-3 SB Champion
bb, if you think Buffalo might make a move for Orton before the season, that would throw a wrench into your let’s start Orton this year plan, right? Am I missing something?
No im simply saying if anything went down i would see them making a move for orton before the season or AFTER. Its always been a hunch to me, and i thought it would happen during the draft last year.
My rant about orton starting is just what i fell is the likelyhood of why he will be our starter if not traded. I mean doesn’t it make sense to do that?
Now you ‘re talking OC, I like the expectations of those numbers for 2011 and 2012, not so much for 2010 since the odds are still against Tebow starting an entire season this year.
bb, Orton is a free agent next year and we won’t get any compensation for him at all.
I just don’t believe that Tebow or Quinn will learn anything by watching Orton make mistakes.
It’s like saying I can learn to golf better by watching another golfer slice the ball on every drive.. just say’n.
Orange crusher, but you would do better on a test if you had time to study correct?
Though you cant measure the speed of the game by just watching, and you have to actually get out there and play, i feel going into something being prepared is alot better than not being prepared. By sitting for a year they will absorb as much as they can and when they step into the offense as a starter or not, they will know the philosophy.
Idk, theres alot of different ways to help a qb learn. Some feel by exposing them to the fire asap is better for their progression, others dont. I just dont see mcdaniels being the throw your qb into the fire right away kind of guy.
bb, we had a heavy discussion about all that the last week or so, so I don’t want to get back into it fully, but the point I was attempting to make was if we are only going to be a couple games better with Orton at the helm than Tebow, and as I think either way our best record this year would be 9-7, which to me has litterally no shot at making the playoffs in our division, so why not throw Tebow in there and therefore be ready for next year that much quicker, because Tebow is unlike other rookies, he would not get his career ruined by being thrown into the fire early, he has too much drive for that. But the start Orton deal also has its merits, I am not sure in the end those merits are worth the waiting for the future thing with Tebow. We all know it’s about Tebow Time, I’d be ok if it was now, just my opinion.
No i agree completely and i as a fan want the future and progression NOW. I simply was just saying what is more than likely going to happen. I would love to have a new qb this year, even though i like orton, i feel he is not our future.
I think everybody can agree on that…
bb,
I think we have all summer to prepare the starter, we’ll see. I hear where you’re comming from though. There have been QB’s that disintegrated when thrown into the fire, but TT is made of TiTanium!! I think he will respond to adversity with a King Leonidas mentality!!!
hey! I made a brand new nickname for him!!!!!!
TITANIUM TIM!!!! YEEEEAH!!!
That’s why this now time is referred to here as the QQ, LOL.
qq?
Is that for the titanium plate he got for the broken fibula he ran for a TD on? just kidding.
how about TIMTANIUM!!!
lol
Quarterback Quagmire.
aah
the Quantum Query into the Quarterback Quagmire…
Im sure orton is grining right now saying ” heh heh…Alll riggggght”
The double QQ. Either way we look at it’s still a QQ.
I am sayin the future is now. And starting a qb that knows he probably will be gone next year all year he aint going to play very good. Every time he steps on the feild and throws an interception in Den the crowd is gonna want Tebow in and they will let Orton and McD know that. So seriously if we aren’t going to have Orton around trade him to buffalo or Seattle or something. or keep him as a back up the rest of the year but seriously…
the QQ is quite complexing and has been know to cause qualm or quarrel in this quaint quadrant of the Bronco Universe. But if you feel qualified to question the subject or make a quirky quote about our quadrupliet of quarterbacks, then we wont quell your quest.. kdn
HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHHAHA, only OC could come up with so many Q words in such a short paragraph, Genius! Why don’t you apply that to your football knowledge? LMAO/JK.
Are you saying the quality of my football quantifications is quasi quibble?
@NastyNate.
Why wouldn’t Orton play his heart out this year. The better he plays this year the bigger his contract will be next year. In a way this year he would be interviewing for a job for another team. He has to play well and fight for that starting spot if he wants to have a future on another team.
Now with all that said I would like to see him traded so we can get our future started with Quinn or Tebow. I just don’t know if there is a team out there that would want to trade for Orton and if so I don’t think we would get much just because he will be a free agent next year.
So to summarize if Orton starts I believe he will do great and play his heart out however I personally am ready to see Quinn and Tebow compete for that starting spot since the two of them are the future.
I think Orton already played his hart out last year. What you see is what you get. There is no different guy gonna jump out of his skin and become a Quintesential Quarterback…?
Besides, why would Coach waste a season away letting a QB “interview for other teams” when he could be having the team playing for their future leader?
We are in the third day of a passing camp and we had great coverage the first day with interviews and pictures. Day 2 One feature on Marquez Branson and an interview with Dawkins and Bannan. Day Three story about Wink Martindale.
What is the problem. Why can’t they do still pictures of practice from the Broncos website staff. We are dying for this stuff because the off season is so long. McDaniels limits the coverage for whatever reason?
THis is the age of information. Don’t get me wrong I like the website this is just frustrating.
I LOVE ME SOME “Wink” SWAGGER!!!!!!
We might get some compensation for Orton…a compensatory draft pick, of which the process of getting was so aptly explained to me by texark, I believe. I am a firm believer that we should wait for a year or two to hand Tebow the reigns. QBs always do better when they aren’t tossed to the wolves.
“Between them they have accumulated to 991 tackles, 46.5 sacks, 29 passes defensed, 15 forced fumbles, 10 fumble recoveries, two interceptions, three Pro Bowls and two Super Bowl wins.”
I love it
Since we were talking RB’S today, I thought I would just post what Klis just revealed, Moreno had only two runs of twenty yards or more last year out of 247 carries!!!! We not only do not go down the field with long passes with Orton but we sure didn’t go long in the running game either. However I would think Bucky surpassed that mark, still it’s pretty humbling to see how anemic we were in the long plays department.
OC
Your quaint but quality post of QQ’s! Made laugh out loud! I had a bad day today and you turned my frown Upside down! I mean it —it was not a LOL— It was my wife coming into my office and asking what happened? LOL
FTR
FTR,
I’m soo glad to have made you laugh and have a better day.. Wow! knowing that just made my day even better than it already was.. cool!
Laughter is the key to the universe….
And the Broncos winning, of course…lol
ILMSDTB!!!
I LOVE ME SOME BRONCO LAUGHS!! ha
Go Broncos
FTR
I honestly believe Tebow is going to be the first QB (When he reaches his prime) to throw for 20 and rush for 20 TD’s.
ha Idk what denver should do with tebow! unless he gets traded orton will start but I really doubt he will finish this season..as soon as he starts to lose consecutive games and his production drops off the denver fans will “force” Mcd to put quinn or tim in, I cant wait for preseason, I will actually want to watch the whole game and not just the first half anymore!!! come on august!
GO BRONCOS!!!!
