I know, I know, there is still Thursday night’s preseason finale to tend to. But I’m ready to get the regular season going. Since the starters won’t play against the Cardinals, it won’t feel like a real game.
It’s still an important game for the players who have one final opportunity to make a positive impression. But realistically, how many roster spots are open? I can’t believe it’s a large number at all.
Of the reserve players, there are a few who have me at least intrigued, if not excited.
One of those guys is wide receiver Brian Clark. He has shown the ability to make plays, he doesn’t seem to be afraid to go over the middle, he has shown improvement, and — while this may not count for a whole lot — he seems like a really neat guy. Javon Walker, Brandon Marshall, Brandon Stokely, Domenik Hixon and maybe Clark, maybe Quincy Morgan, maybe both are on the roster for the season opener against Buffalo.
In fact, I’m excited to see more of Hixon on Thursday night, too. He has shown glimpses of being a game-breaking kind of player. I love watching a young player start to make an impact and I think over time, Hixon will be a guy who impacts games.
I also am inerested to see what Montrae Holland will do as a starter on the offensive line so he probably won’t play against Arizona. I know watching the o-linemen isn’t exactly the chic thing to do, but it seems like the Broncos might have a really good player on their hands. He’s healthy and for a big guy, Holland can move. He has shown enough to earn a spot in the starting line-up.
On the defensive side, I want to see more of Jarvis Moss and Tim Crowder. Crowder has been slowed by the ankle injury recently and earlier in the preseason Moss suffered a twisted knee. There’s no doubt that the Broncos will need those young defensive linemen to make plays and I hope those two can contribute.
I also like Hamza Abdullah and Steve Cargile at safety. Again, they’re young players who seem to developing right before our eyes. They should see plenty of snaps in the final preseason game.
Since there are four preseason games on the schedule, we might as well see what the back-ups can do…even if the game doesn’t count in the standings.
Of the reserve players, who gets you excited? I’d love your thoughts.
