Meeting The New Guys - Part 3

May 30th, 2009 - 11:00am by mike_riceOther posts by mike_rice

In part three of our series of interviews with new Denver Broncos, we feature Broncos’ cornerback Alphonso Smith from Wake Forest University.

On the first day of the NFL Draft, the Broncos traded their own 2010 first-round pick to the Seattle Seahawks for the 37th overall selection. Denver used that second round pick to take Smith.

We spoke with Alphonso when he visited Broncos headquarters on the second day of the draft.

Mike Rice: You’re a Denver Bronco. Can you believe it?

Alphonso Smith: I can. I can. I had a pretty good visit when I came out here and I left with a pretty good feeling in my heart that it was a possibility that I could be a Bronco.

MR: But until you hear your name, I guess you never really know, do you?

AS: You never really know. But when Coach McDaniels called I was like, ‘Yes, Broncos. At least it’s a team I want to go to.’ I’m still kind of soaking it in. I can believe it but at the same time I really can’t believe it.

Meeting The New Guys - Part 2

This is part two of our interview series with some of the Broncos’ 2009 draft picks. We had the chance to speak with several of them on the second day of the NFL draft, April 26, at Broncos’ headquarters.

With the 18th overall pick, the Broncos selected Robert Ayers a defensive lineman/linebacker from the University of Tennessee.

Mike Rice: Did you have any idea that you would be the Broncos’ pick?

Robert Ayers: During the process, I felt like this was a good fit for me. From talking with the coaches, I felt like I was a guy they were targeting and the pieces fell into place. I’m more than happy to be here. I think I’m going to fit well with the team and I’ll do all I can to help this organization. It’s all about winning. They were one or two games short last year. I’m not going to be that piece that gets us over the hump but hopefully I can be a small part of the building block. You got great guys like Brian Dawkins and Champ Bailey here so I feel like we can get things turned around. I’m willing to do whatever I can do to get it turned around.

Meeting The New Guys - Part 1

May 11th, 2009 - 4:55pm by mike_riceOther posts by mike_rice

The Broncos have had a couple of mini-camps, the latest of which was in early May. That’s when the Broncos’ draft picks had the opportunity to work with the team for the first time.

This is part one of a question-and-answer series with some of the Broncos’ picks. We had the chance to speak with many of them when they first visited Dove Valley on April 26.

With the twelfth overall selection, the Broncos chose running back Knowshon Moreno from the University of Georgia.

MR: Knowshon, take us through the lead-up to the draft and your emotions leading up to the call from the Broncos.

KM: I waited throughout the week and finally it (the draft) gets here. I think at my place, the atmosphere was really calm and collected. Everyone was just waiting to see what happens because we didn’t know. We got that call and he said I’d be going with the twelfth pick to the Broncos and we all went crazy and I’m really enjoying it.

It’s Too Early To Know

April 28th, 2009 - 12:18am by mike_riceOther posts by mike_rice

Finally, the hype settles down. But we still don’t know much more than we did a few days ago.

The rite of spring known as the NFL Draft came and went with its usual, accompanying cacophony of opinions and overanalysis.

A simple fact remains, though, after all the “war rooms” have been converted back to their normal states: No one knows which teams did well and which teams did not.

We all can root for our favorite teams to select players we think will be good. We can all debate why we think a particular team’s draft was good or not so good.

But when you get right down to it, we just don’t know which players will be good and which ones won’t.

Those are helpful reminders for me as I think about the Broncos’ 2009 draft.

A Wild Weekend Awaits

April 23rd, 2009 - 10:49am by mike_riceOther posts by mike_rice

The countdown is on. The draft approaches. Let the speculation continue.

In recent days, the draft buzz surrounding USC quarterback Mark Sanchez has reached fever pitch. I’ll cut to the chase: I don’t expect Sanchez to be wearing a Broncos uniform this fall.

There are several reasons for this.

First, the Broncos need a lot of help on defense. With the twelfth and eighteenth overall picks, they could select a couple of highly rated defensive players and, hopefully, continue the rebuilding process on the defensive side off the ball.

They need a nose tackle; they need a pass rusher; they need a tough linebacker.

Thoughts From The Coach - Part 2

April 9th, 2009 - 8:01am by mike_riceOther posts by mike_rice

On Friday, April 3, the Broncos traded quarterback Jay Cutler to the Chicago Bears for two first-round draft picks, a third-rounder and quarterback Kyle Orton.

The day of the trade, Broncos’ head coach Josh McDaniels spoke with Dave Logan and Lois Melkonian on 850 KOA’s “The Ride Home.” Here is the second and final part of that interview. Again, 850 KOA tried to contact Jay Cutler but did not receive a response.

KOA: In Jay Cutler’s performance on the field or how he conducts himself off the field, did anything strike you after you took this job that caused you concern (so) you would say, “I’m not sure this is going to be the guy we go forward with?”

JM: Absolutely not. No. I’ll tell you this. There are a lot of things we need to do to improve our team. The perception is the offense has all the answers and the defense cost us a lot of games. The reality is the offense has significant improvement to go through. We had 17 two-minute drives last year and scored one field goal. (We) had 30 turnovers which was second-worst in the league. (There are) a number of things that aren’t necessarily as glowing as you might think they would be. We were last in the league in field position; we were 28th in kickoff return. So there are a number of reasons why we weren’t as successful as Denver and this community wanted it to be last year and our goal is to address all of them including the play of the offense. There’s significant improvement that needs to be made in order for us to compete at a high level but none of that was directed at the quarterback. There were a lot of other things that needed to be fixed. That’s what we were going to work hard to do.

Thoughts From The Coach - Part 1

April 6th, 2009 - 10:01am by mike_riceOther posts by mike_rice

The Broncos and quarterback Jay Cutler could never get on the same page. Now, after the blockbuster trade that occurred on Friday, April 3, Cutler is in Chicago and the Broncos are moving on with quarterback Kyle Orton, an extra first-round and third-round draft pick this year and another first-rounder in 2010.

There has been much speculation about who said what to whom and when. Broncos Head Coach Josh McDaniels spoke with Dave Logan and Lois Melkonian on 850 KOA’s “The Ride Home” on the day the Broncos made the trade. I wanted to share some of the questions and responses because they hit on many of the key issues in this whole saga. Part one of that interview follows.

A Much-Needed Break

March 24th, 2009 - 7:04am by mike_riceOther posts by mike_rice

The stakes are high. The emotions are raw. Everyone wants to see a resolution in the situation between the Broncos and quarterback Jay Cutler and we all wanted it yesterday.

The fact is that sometimes things just take time.

If you had asked me two weeks ago how I thought this saga would end, I would have said without a doubt I believed Jay Cutler would be back as the Broncos’ starting quarterback in 2009.

Now, I can only hope he will be back.

The tough part in trying to come to an opinion about a situation such as this is that people on the outside, and I include myself in that group, don’t really and truly know what is going on. People might think they know based on who tells what to whom.

But when it gets right down to it, we weren’t in the meetings. We didn’t hear the various conversations that went on. The people who were in the meetings and were involved in the conversations have often come away with much differing thoughts on what transpired.

I have never liked playing the blame-game; it just doesn’t accomplish much. So I’m not going to sit here and say who I think is right in this whole thing because I just don’t know. Call that a cop-out if you like but sometimes I believe we all think too highly of our uninformed opinions.

Taking Stock

March 9th, 2009 - 11:48am by mike_riceOther posts by mike_rice

The initial flurry of free agent activity has subsided and the Broncos were as active as any team in the NFL. Their list of acquisitions looks like an oversized draft class. They signed players at a variety of positions, which is good because the Broncos have a variety of needs.

Here are some thoughts about the Broncos’ moves in free agency. Keep in mind that I am an optimist and look for the bright side of things.

RUNNING BACK

I like what the Broncos did here. They brought in experienced NFL players Correll Buckhalter, J.J. Arrington and LaMont Jordan. Add them to a group of young backs including Peyton Hillis, Ryan Torain, Selvin Young and Andre Hall and the Broncos will have plenty of options once training camp starts.

They simply had to bring in some guys who have produced in the NFL. They accomplished that. When Coach McDaniels was in New England, the Patriots used several running backs instead of one workhorse back. I can see the Broncos using the same philosophy at running back in 2009. If they do, they’ll have some good candidates from which to choose.

I think Buckhalter, Arrington and Jordan can and will be productive, assuming all are on the team in September when the regular season opens.

And let’s not forget that Hillis showed he is an NFL-caliber player in 2008 and Torain showed flashes of good play in his short time on the field before injuring his knee.

The Frenzy Begins

March 1st, 2009 - 2:51am by mike_riceOther posts by mike_rice

NFL free agency is underway and the Broncos have already made a splash. Safety Brian Dawkins makes the move from Philadelphia to Denver and he is in the fold.

There are also multiple report that the organization is also close to signing safety Renaldo Hill, running back Correll Buckhalter, wide receiver Jabar Gaffney and longsnapper Lonie Paxton.

It seems like a good possibility the moves are imminent and if they indeed come to pass, I like them.

First off, the Broncos would presumably have their two starting safeties and upgraded the back end of their defense.
