The offseason is over. Training camp is upon us. This marks the final installment of our interview series leading up to the start of camp.
In this edition, we bring you thoughts from new quarterback Brady Quinn (BQ), whom the Broncos acquired in a trade with the Cleveland Browns.
During OTA’s (organized team activities), Quinn spoke with 850 KOA.
850 KOA: What first went through your mind when you heard the Broncos traded for you?
BQ: When I first found out, the GM from Cleveland called. I thought someone did a prank call so I wasn’t sure if it was real or not until he told me Josh (McDaniels) would call me a few minutes later. When Josh did call, it kind of hit me that it was for real. I was really excited for the opportunity. I have looked forward to playing for a coach like Josh, a guy who loves offense, loves the quarterback position and is really going to help develop a guy (and) do some different things on offense to take advantage of the defense. It’s definitely a great opportunity for me. Any time you think of the Denver Broncos and the storied program that it is, it’s an exciting time.
850 KOA: What was your reaction when you heard the Broncos drafted Tim Tebow?
BQ: No different. Tim Tebow being drafted here really doesn’t have a whole lot to do with me. My goal is to work as hard as I can, get as good as I can and go in and compete. That’s my job and my role. Every coach is going to try to put as many good players on the team as he can. That’s what he (Coach McDaniels) did by drafting a guy like Tim Tebow.
850 KOA: Josh McDaniels and former Notre Dame coach Charlie Weis once coached together with the Patriots. When you look at the Broncos’ offense, do you see similarities with what you ran at Notre Dame under Coach Weis?
BQ: There’s definitely a lot of crossover, a lot of similarities. Granted, I haven’t been in that system (Notre Dame’s) for three years, but even playing under Brian Gable last year (in Cleveland), his offense had a little bit of crossover from what I ran under Charlie. It’s a good fit for me; it’s a good system. Again, I’m excited about the opportunity.
850 KOA: We hear it is a quarterback-friendly system. What does that mean?
BQ: To me what I think that means is giving the quarterback the opportunity to pretty much do anything he wants. You’re making the decision at the line of scrimmage and setting things up. From there, you’re controlling what’s going on, how to get your team into the best play and really deciding what the best thing to do is in each given scenario. For a guy who likes to play quarterback, that’s right up my alley. That’s something I had the opportunity to do in college and it’s something we had the opportunity to do a little bit last year. I’m excited about being able to do that here.
850 KOA: What is it like to have the kind of competition the Broncos have at the quarterback position?
BQ: That was the situation I came into as a rookie (in Cleveland) so it’s really not much different than what I was accustomed to. That’s actually what it was going into last year with Cleveland. We had four guys on the roster even though it was mostly between Derek (Anderson) and myself. A quarterback competition is a quarterback competition. Everyone kind of looks at that and focuses on that. Everyone is competing all over the field. It’s not just at quarterback. I think in the end that makes everyone better and it makes your team better as a whole.
850 KOA: Coach McDaniels has made it pretty clear that he is going to play the best player at any given position. Even though coaches say things, players are smart and know if a coach is just saying that or if he means it. Since you’ve been in Denver, have you been given any indication that the quarterback job is not open?
BQ: Josh has been up front with you guys (the media) just as much as he’s been up front with us. The best guy will play and that’s what he has stated all along. I think it’s in the best interest of any head coach to play the guy who gives him the best chance to win. That’s been no different than what we’ve heard.
850 KOA: The weather is a lot better in Denver than it is in Cleveland.
BQ: (laughing) You’re not kidding. It has been beautiful.
850 KOA: Welcome to Denver and thank you for your time.
BQ: Thank you.
As of now, Quinn is second on the depth chart behind starter Kyle Orton. Feel free to post your thoughts on the three-way quarterback competition (Orton, Quinn, Tebow) and how you think things will shake out.
Full-squad training camp practices start on Sunday, August 1. I’ll have a training camp preview in my next post.
Thanks for reading.
Sincerely,
Mike

sndvl…You’re welcome. Thanks to you for continuing to check them out. I really appreciate that and also appreciate your posting so often. Time to get down to business. Should be fun. Mike
Thanks Mike! I’m so pumped to see what happens, this is the first year that I can honestly say the pre-season could be as interesting as the regular season! haha
Nice Q&A Mike.
Hope your the one who bring us fans the real stories. Hope your the one who brings us fans the up todate going-ons in camp. And I hope your the one who brings us fans the news on every battle at every position in camp. Please keep bringing us fans what we are looking for during camp and the regular season. Keep up the good work.
Go Broncos!!!
haaa, the Quarterback Quagmire, what do we think will happen…
If Orton gets hurt or if he has no shot at the playoffs with a few games to go , that’s the only way Quinn sees the field, whether he is #2 or 3. Reason is If Orton stays healthy and and has a shot at the playoffs through the season, the only help he will get is from Tebow in wild horse formations. So in order for Quinn to have any relevance he needs to lock up the #1 spot for the start of the regular season. Tall order.
Hence Quinn is the odd man out in this triplet in my opinion, and I kind of feel for him. He is very mature in this interview, yet I know he is probably sorry how things turned out here for him since the day he was traded here and immediately put on a pedestal by friends and media, only to fall flat on his butt with the drafting of Tebow. That is the truth of the matter and there is no way around it, Bravo Brady for showing such class, and if things turn out as I think, hopefully you will get a shot somewhere else next year, I think that will be your best option by far because even if you start this season Tebow is waiting to take your job in the wings.
That’s my thoughts about the QQ, some think it’s a good position to be in, having a three horse race, I don’t, the team needs to know right away who is driving the car, this is not a positive to me, but just the way it has turned out and McD made it that way so he and I will have to live with it. As you famously said once Mike, it is what it is…
“whether he is #2 or 3″ shouldn’t be in there in above post, I changed my train of thought while writing and forgot to delete it. This of course was based on Orton being #1, Quinn 2 and Tebow 3, which seems to be the consensus now.
Oh and Bay, Cody passed his physical today haha, too funny.
I take it he took some heavy dose of laxative for one end and medicine to get rid of excess water for the other end.
Darrell Reid, ex Colts, has a lot of good things to say about Tebow in today’s article by Klis in the DP, even saying Tebow’s work ethics remind him of Peyton Manning, if you are a big Tebow fan, you’ll eat that article up, check it out.
I think by the time te season starts, Quinn or TT will be the starter. I think they are way more talented than Ortonn and seem to work just as or more hard than Orton. GO BRONCOS!!!
Then why would McD keeps saying Orton is way ahead of the other two, I mean if he had the thought in the back of his head that someone other than Orton will start, why toying with Orton like that. I think Orton starts the season and when he is replaced is stricktly based on his performance on our record, as long as we are in the game playoff wise Orton stays the man, with an early collapse we could have Quinn replace him by mid season, and Tebow shall be the starter next year, that’s how I see it.
That’s why it’s a QQ, good for conversation, that’s for sure, but unfortunately not good for much else, at least in my opinion.
Kyle Orton is not going to get us where we want to be. I think they should start Quinn and see what happens. He is a much better athlete
than Orton.
We all know Tebow will play this year in certain packages and start next year.
I just touched on that in the previous blog, I agree.
IMO we should see how pre-season goes, Tebow hasn’t even taken an NFL snap and some of you want to throw him in the fire and Quinn hasn’t done anything in the NFL so far! I like all of our QBs and they all have potential but as of this minute I trust Orton to give us the best chance this season, and I’ll think that until Tebow or Quinn prove they can handle it!
That seems to be the way McD is thinking.
good find on the home records baylin!
IF we can win our divisional games at home this year-10 or 11 wins is not out of the question. Pivitol final game of the season. Been that way two years running. 3rd times a charm?!?
GO GET EM BRONCOS, 2K10!!!!!!!!!!
Thanks sndvl, glad someone found it useful since it took me a while to gather it.
I think this will be one of the most interesting position battles at training camp of all time.
So many possibilities. Most of you know how orton folds when there is compitition. (see rex grossman) he could have a terrible preseason like he did last year, or mess up his ankle again. I already know tebow will get playing time but not in a starting role. The real battle is between orton and quinn.
Since no one is on the previous blog any longer, I’m re-posting my last post there where I talked about just what florio is talking about, for this year the only QB competition is between Orton and Quinn, here is the re-post:
The Tebow magic show certainly seems to be pushed back to 2011 if we can believe Elway that patience should be the motto with Tebow in his first year, unfortunately I pretty much buy that all the way, so the only options I see for this year is Orton or Quinn, that’s it. And since I know what Orton can do I wouldn’t mind seeing what Quinn’s got, at least next year when Tebow starts, we would know who to keep for a back up and we wouldn’t have to carry 3 QB’s.
It is interesting to be entertained by the QB competition at Dove Valley but I’m more concerned about the O-line than anything. Getting Clady and Harris healthy for starters and then the guard and center positions are a concern. The D-line offers some intrigue as well with many newcomers added to the mix. Jamal Williams, Jarvis Green and Justin Bannan should be strong additions. The dark days of NFL summer are over. I’m pumped!!!
GO BRONCOS!!!! South Stands Forever!!! The Orange Crush Lives!!
Mike,
Interesting to read Brady Quinns take on the system and more importantly, the familiarity. Coach McD will make the calls, but awarness at the line of scrimmage and recognizing what the defense gives you of course is a big key.
I look for Quinn to be a reliable #2, for the time being. He may be #2 for KO and and could possibly do the same for TT down the road.
Hard to say what will play out. If we’re gelling as a unit on O, and QB is a concern, then he’ll get the opportunity to contribute. The intangibles Quinn brings, could be what the Team may need at a certain point.
It’s great to know we have a stronger #2 QB this year.
Great interview… thanks for keeping us in the loop.
GO BRONCOS!!!
For us who claim to love and know the Broncos, you should know that McDaniels offense is a very complex and difficult. Most Qb’s struggle their first year in it. Orton’s numbers will be better this year even without Marshall because he knows the offense much better and will make better reads with less mistakes. Orton is the front runner in the Qb competetion by far. This is his second year in it. No way Brady or Tebow can beat him out. I believe they are more atheletic than Orton but Orton knows the offense better there for Orton will start and finish the season unless he get hurt or we fall from Play-off contention. Orton will have a great year, I believe alot better year than last year. We will see but remember IWILLX2 said it first !
It is GREAT to have BRADY for our back up. Tebow will need 2 to 3 years to really be ready to fully run this offense. when he is ready, he is going to be special….I believe if he is blessed to continue to learn under McDaniels, He WILL bring a SUPER BOWL to us Denver Broncos ! IWILLX2
So if Orton is average once again like last year, do you still want us to remember you, LOL.
Orton doesn’t have the arm strength to stretch the field making it too easy for the opposing defense to keep us from the end zone.
Hopefully Quinn proves that he is the guy that should be starting with Orton and Tebow competing for the back-up role.. I’d rather see Tebow on the field in that case and Orton on the bench
McD seems to be too much of a stubborn ass to take Orton out unless it’s for Tebow.. On a positive note, if things don’t go well this season we should see a new head coach
Well if Orton has a good year, baylin, then what?
If not today, I hope Tebow signs soon, his day should be up any moment, the rookies have their first TC day today. Are we going to get any kind of report on that?
IWX2,
If Tebow takes 2-3 yrs to develop then I think it was a big mistake drafting him. McDaniels may not even be around to see the guy play. At that pace McD will need a contract extension just to be able to coach Tebow in a game??? We need to draft players that can contribute right away. We need immediate major production from all of our high draft picks.. jomho
What great football player needed 3 years to sit on the sideline before he could be able to play? Phillip Rivers may be the exeption.
I also disagree that McD’s offense is very “complex”? I watched it all year last year and it was bland, predictable, slow and inefective…. Umm, “complex”? I didn’t see it.
Maybe it’s soo complex that he uses the same running play up the middle every time because other teams would never guess that a coach would run the same play over and over again all year?? Or maybe it’s soo complex that the QB just throws the ball away if his first option reciever is not open…Teams would never guess to defend the out of bounds sidline pass!! haha..lol kddn
sndvl, if Orton has a good year, it will be a great audition for him to get on another team next year is how I look at it, a first round pick QB with Tebow’s attributes cannot sit on the bench very long, specially with how enamored McD is about him, Tebow will start next year regardless of the other QB’s performance would be my take on it.
I just have a headache cuz we have too many potentials…I almost wish we only got BQ or only got TT. Dont get me wrong this puts us in a better position for finding the future QB and an even better position for a back up QB if the starter goes down unlike last year. But at the end of the day, I can’t help but feel like whoever doesnt succeed it woulda been a waste getting them between BQ and TT. Orton just feels like the odd man out. I say we should have traded him (especially after his best season to date) and gotten something good, cuz if he gets benched half way through the season, his stock will take a hit lol
Thanks for the interview…. Geez, held out on it long enough though – this was done during OTA’s?
Only kidding… I really do appreciate you sharing.
I have great confidence in Our team this year. It has easily doubled the excitement I felt for the season, this time last year. Looking forward to attending all the training camps from the 1st – 7th (the Mile High TC). It’s going to be a great year for Us and Our Broncos!
Coach McD in his second year building a TEAM and some of you already talking about his demise(cloq,OC etc). I predict McD will turn out to be a damn good coach and very successful and until proven wrong I will plan on him being here for a long time. I’m sure not wanting to go through a rebuilding process every few years like some of you seem to want. I look for 11-5 or 10-6 this year and better next year. Then can we keep McD? GO BRONCOS!!!
I think it might be later than next year before Tebow starts. I think it’ll be Orton this year, then either him or Quinn next year, and the following year is when Tebow will really fight for the job. Statistics show that QBs who wait 2-4 years before starting do much better than those who wait 0-1.
Maniac. if thats the case, then like OC said, its a waste, cuz I hop McDaniels doesnt really believe he has 2-4 years cuz I think he has 2 years max to show us somethign before he gets the heave ho.
footballManiac,
Don’t tell me there is a statistic, show me the statistic. Name a few QB’s or something….
Danso,
Nobody want Josh to succeed more than me! They call me a Joshkateer at the DP..
I was only refering to the fact that McDaniels only has three years left on his contract and if TT don’t play for 3 years than McD will need a contract extention to see Tim start.
I personally think it is all rubbish… Nobody sits on the bench for three years and becomes a great football player..Now way, Great players play!!!
OC-Thanks for clarifying-my mistake. The ones who are calling for his head after only one year do p_ss me off. Give the man the benefit of the doubt and a chance is all I’m saying.
OC loves McD and hates Orton
sndvl loves Orton and hates McD
It’s not that complicated, you’ll get the hang of it.
LMAO
LIKE TO SEE QUINN GET A FAIR SHAKE TO SEE WHAT HE CAN REALLY DO.THIS MAY BE HIS LAST CHANCE TO PROVE HE CAN PLAY AT THE PRO LEVEL.SORRY FOR CAPS!
You’ll have to forgive me Danso if I’m a little skeptical of McD. From what i’ve seen since he’s been in Denver he’s; traded a franchise QB, traded one of the best WR’s in the league, and gave away 3 draft picks for someone that could have come much cheaper.
How long would you like to give him to rebuild? He hasn’t done much to deserve the praise he’s been given
