On The Clock

April 19th, 2010 - 11:49pm by mike_rice

The draft is upon us. As there is every year, there has been plenty of talk about what will happen. It is fun to wonder what will happen. It is fun to consider the many scenarios that could unfold for every team.

I always try to keep two main things in mind when trying to guess what any given team might do.

1 – NO ONE KNOWS WHAT WILL HAPPEN UNTIL IT HAPPENS. I know, no kidding. But with so many people offering their opinions, one can easily think that any one of them actually knows what will transpire.

The fact is, we don’t know. We can analyze the needs a team has. We can offer some educated guesses about what might happen. But to paraphrase Yogi Berra, we don’t know until we know. I like it that way.

2 – WE CAN’T REALLY TRUST WHAT FRONT OFFICE PERSONNEL OR COACHES SAY LEADING UP TO THE DRAFT. If we need a current example, Browns’ President Mike Holmgren offered one last week. Again to paraphrase, Holmgren said he says things before the draft to suit the purposes he has. What he says may or may not be true.

That’s part of the chess game the draft is and it is another factor that makes the whole event so interesting to me.

3 – EXPECT THE UNEXPECTED. It always seems to happen. In recent years, we have seen the Broncos position themselves to draft Jay Cutler. Last year, they took Knowshon Moreno twelfth overall when few people thought they would draft a running back that high. Whatever you think the script is, get ready to see it be something completely different.

Last Friday (April 16), Broncos’ head coach Josh McDaniels made some interesting comments on a number of topics, but I’m not sure exactly what to believe.

The Broncos have the 11th selection in the first round. Coach McDaniels said, as of Friday, the team has not talked to any teams about moving up in the draft.

“We’ll be flexible and we’ll listen but the odds would be in favor of us going backwards probably because the most opportunity lies there.”

That leads me to how I think the first round will go for the Broncos.

1 – IF THEY CAN, THE BRONCOS WILL TRADE DOWN AND TAKE FLORIDA CENTER MAURKICE POUNCEY IN THE FIRST ROUND. According to many people who evaluate prospects, Pouncey has the ability to start in his first year. The Broncos have a glaring need at the center position and Pouncey would fill it.

The tempting situation for the Broncos would be if Alabama linebacker Rolando McClain is available when they pick eleventh, assuming the Broncos haven’t moved up already. If McClain is there, I could see the Broncos taking him. He, too, would fill a need for a playmaker on defense.

2 – THE BRONCOS WILL NOT TAKE OKLAHOMA STATE WR DEZ BRYANT IN THE FIRST ROUND. Coach McDaniels spoke glowingly about Bryant last week but taking a wide receiver in the first round doesn’t add up to me. Yes, the Broncos need to upgrade this position. But this seems to be a position of depth in this draft and the Broncos have two second round picks.

Thankfully, it is about time to stop talking and starting picking. I know many of you have shared your thoughts on what you think the Broncos will do in the draft. Keep the comments coming.

Thanks for reading,
Mike

  3. BroncoAussie says:

    Oh you so naughty sndvl

  4. sndvl says:

point all i was trying to convey is that we have a list full of needs that were not needs at the end of the season.

even Klis used the “rebuilding” word on the DP….

  5. BeastFromEast92 says:

    I said the b word and didn’t.LOL

  6. sndvl says:

we have many needs and not enough draft picks…would loved to have our #14…i would be happy to trade out of the first all together to get another 2nd and 3rd to be honest with you all!

  7. sndvl says:

I know BFE, WTF???? Maybe i should cool it on my rhetoric….

McDaniels youre so awesome. The bestest coach in the league. You are #1 in my book. People will respect your authoritay. OR ELSE!!!

  8. BeastFromEast92 says:

    LMFAO

  9. derrick149 says:

there u go, sndvl. ur finally coming around. I knew you had it in you. lol

  10. BroncoAussie says:

Sounds like your head is so far up McD a$$ you can see what he ate for lunch. haha

Nah sndvl, the filters on this blog have been screwy for a while now.

  11. BeastFromEast92 says:

It won’t work they know you all to well…sndvl the McChaos Basher.LMAO

  12. BeastFromEast92 says:

I know we need help on Offense, but DAMN this draft is DEEP with Defensive players that can flat Dominate.Wished we were set on Offense, and go D-D-D-D-D-D-DEFENSE.

  13. kase78matt says:

BeastFromEast92 Danario looks like a clone of marshall… id love to see that draft he looked like he had decent speed too

  14. BeastFromEast92 says:

Yeah kase we need a WR with size and strength, maybe(and that’s a BIG maybe) he might eventually turn out to have some skills like you know who.

  15. oldsouthstander says:

When the 2010 home and away opponents were annunced, sans specific dates, I felt that the Broncod schedule would be much easierb than last years. But the schedule makers sure found a way to stick it to the Broncos with 4 away games in five weeks; three of them in a row!!! But, hope springs eternal.
At Jacksonville Win Jags were 7-9 with a much easier schedule than the Broncos and had every 2009 home game except one blacked out. Easy to get what fans they have out of the game.
Seattle Win Seattle will soon find out why Carroll should have stayed as a college hadf coach. He sucked first time, this time will be no different.
    Indy Toss up, probable loss.
At Titans Toss up. Is Young the real deal or will defenses catch onto him? Also, lost their best D lineman.
At Ravens Loss Broncos should do better against them this time, but still ..
Jets Win Jets were 9-7 not 7-9 only because their last two games were against second stringers. Not as good as their record .
    Raiders Practice game
at SF Toss up. Advantgae Broncos.
    KC Win
    At SD Loss
    St Louis Win
At KC Toss up Advantage KC as the Broncos seldom win two in a row at KC
AT AZ Win No QB, no run game, no D
    At Oakland Win
    Houston Win
    SD Toss up Advantgae Broncos
9-7 to 11-5 depending on a lot of stuff. May revise this depending on draft.

Let’s just sweep the Chargers this year and do it right. Thats my early Christmas wish, and win the AFC west. LOL

  17. BeastFromEast92 says:

Yeah Big D If we win the West we are sured of a playoff spot too.Not to mention seeing Rivers cry (thats my Christmas wish) LOL.

  18. weareamr says:

Did anyone mention get some”WEAPONS” on offense yet?

  19. weareamr says:

I know we need to draft some weapons on offense in this draft. Go Broncos!!

  20. OrAnGeCrUsH56 says:

all i want for christmas is rivers two front teeth, a gift from DOOM!!!!! haha

  21. BroncoAussie says:

Predictions are stupid the only sure thing is the Broncos won’t lose in week 9.

  22. weareamr says:

How about the Broncos drafting Bryant in th 1st, 2nd get either Ducasse, Asamoah, Tennant or Petrus then select either Lee, Spikes, Chaney or Butler that all for Thursday and Friday. Come away with a starter at WR a starter at GUARD or CENTER and a starter at ILB. And sense i’m on the subject throe in ther a punter who can start also. Then i’ll leave the rest in your hans. Go Broncos!!!

  23. brian_schneider says:

Remember last season when people predicted us going 3-13 or 4-12..remember that. They made all those predictions before anyone even strapped on the pads, tied up the cleats and set foot on the field. Predictions are fun for the sake of being fun, but a wise man by the name of Rod Smith once said, and I’m paraphrasing, “you can’t predict anything, because they haven’t put on the cleats yet.”

  24. Big D 44 says:

You are right brian. That is why I”m so apprehensive to predict how the Broncos will draft. I know it’s all in good fun, but honestly I’m not even going to try and pretend that I know what McD and X are planning.

In addtion, I think it is best to see how the draft goes before people start thinking of how we will do next year. We should probable even wait until late summer to try and predict our 2010 record. By that time we will have some info. about how the team is meshing and working together. IMO.

  25. brian_schneider says:

I do know one thing, the team now knows what and how McD will run the team. They know that McD will hold them accoutable and expect nothing less than all they have to give. I think that aspect is going to be a real positive for the team.

  26. ramboskithefan says:

why didnt we get ernie sims out of the deal??? thats crap he would be a beast then we wouldnt have to draft mclain. lame…

  27. Big D 44 says:

I think so too brian. I am really optimistic about the direction this team is heading, I just hope my intuition is correct. I enjoyed the interview with Jason L. (forget his name) on NFL network. McD is a die hard believer in the way he is building this team. He has a positive energy flowing from him. Now that the defectors are gone, I believe this team will make big improvements in 2010 and beyond.

  28. brian_schneider says:

I can’t wait until tomorrow night, the anticipation is just killing me. My wife doesn’t quite get into the draft like I do. You know whats funny is during the season when we watch games I freak out when the other team scores or is ahead in the score. It seems like I have no patience at all, my wife is always like “there’s the 2nd half or its only the first quarter.” When the draft comes around I’m the patient one, I look at the draft boards who’s all left, who’s gone who’s trading, and I really get into it, my wife is like “why don’t they just hurry up and pick someone, how come they wait until the last second.” LOL! I just think it’s funny the way things work out.

  29. strandoftds says:

Wow, only one Monday Niter. I also can`t wait unilt tomorrow night. We need defence. My prediction is McClain.

  30. strandoftds says:

I forgot how to spell, LOL. Monday Nighter. Also defence, defence, defence!

  31. BeastFromEast92 says:

Williams or McClain would make me happy,a lot of people want to trade down in the 20′s and get another pick, and still get Pouncey,I got news for them San Fran needs Oline help too,and they have the #13 and #17 picks, and the Steelers have already said they would take Pouncey at #18.

    D-E-F-E-N-S-E

  32. Big D 44 says:

No kidding BFE. This is going to be a very interesting draft. Maybe we can get the center from Notre Dame?

  33. footballMANIAC says:

NFL.com reports Roethlisberger is suspended for 6 games.

  34. footballMANIAC says:

Only Shanahan could pull off something like this.
    http://msn.foxsports.com/nfl/story/Rams-trade-Adam-Carriker-to-Redskins-for-swap-of-picks-042010
Jason Taylor signed with the Jets. The Steelers acquired Byron Leftwich.

  35. royalbroncofan1 says:

Broncos former LG Ben Hamilton signs with Seahawks. Best wishes to Ben. He started 80 games at LG guard during his time with the Broncos.

  36. BeastFromEast92 says:

I say we take Williams or McClain at #11,then go after Olsen,Walton,or Tennant, for Center.

  37. BeastFromEast92 says:

rbf1 Hamilton was a great player for us,I say the best of luck to him too,but I guess he is too small for McD’s power scheme.

  38. royalbroncofan1 says:

Was he cut sometime back? Missed that one. I figured he’d be gone this year as he was benched last season for Russ Hochstein (sp).

You’re right BFE92 bigger lineman- McDaniels lookings to add a new LG plus Center. Seth Olsen should fine at LG. Trading down for Pouncey makes sense. Mclain may not be available by #11 pick.

  39. royalbroncofan1 says:

meant “should do fine at LG”

  40. BeastFromEast92 says:

I’d rather have McClain, trading down for Pouncey might not work, because San Fran needs Oline help, they hace picks #13 and #17.Pittsburgh has also showed interest in Pouncey, they pick at #18,we could try it,but if he’s gone then what??? I say take McClain (if he’s still there) then pick up Walton OC(Baylor),or Olsen OC(Notre Dame).

  41. broncosfreak30 says:

hahahah big ben got suspended 6 games!!!!!!!

  42. kase78matt says:

i wasnt affected as bad as some when marshall was traded because i know we will make up for it he was good cause he was a big guy he can go up for a ball and be higher then the corner on flat ground while the corners in the air

  43. royalbroncofan1 says:

BFE92: Tough call. Olsen knows the system from ND. This draft is deep for Center position. All depends on who they really want. Of course I’m saying anything anyone already knows. Pouncey will not make it past #20 pick. His size would be excellent fit. Also read on espn Chiefs might go for Mclain at #5 pick. They took the kid last year from LSU that many say we were targeting.. Tyson Jackson.

  44. BeastFromEast92 says:

rbf1 anything can and WILL happen tomorrow night, just hope we’re not disapointed. If I had MY choice I’d take Berry,I know Safety is not a need for us,but could you imagine,Berry being tutored by Dawk for a year. With his speed,he could start at Corner or Safety, plus he’s great at stuffing the run when you put him around the line of scrimmage.

Raiders and Chiefs would pick McClain to keep us from getting him.

  45. royalbroncofan1 says:

No wonder I hate those guys…. lol

  46. atwaters da man says:

The real question is who do we pick if Dan Willams and McClain are off the board at 11 and we cannot get the value needed to trade down???

I think you have to take Earl Thomas, Sean Witherspoon, Brandon Graham or reach for Pouncey?

I also think Taylor Mays maybe the best Linebacker project to come out in a very long time. To bad we don’t have time to transform him.
