More Progress

August 24th, 2011 - 12:51am by mike_rice

Saturday night against Buffalo, the Broncos continued to take steps forward.

I know it’s only preseason; I know they played the Buffalo Bills. It’s early. We all know that. But all I have to go on is what they have done so far. I certainly like it better when I like what I see rather than when I wish I were seeing something better.

Several things popped out at me while watching the Buffalo game.

1 – THE BRONCOS SHOULD HAVE NO TROUBLE RUSHING THE PASSER. Elvis Dumervil and rookie Von Miller made their presences felt right away. That is a great sign. Miller appears to be what everyone thought he would be: A playmaker on defense. He flat out blew past some Buffalo players. When is the last time the Broncos had that kind of threat on defense? It has been some time.

If the Broncos can force opponents into third-and-medium-to-long situations, they should be able to get pressure on the quarterback. I am still, however, somewhat concerned about their ability to get into those types of situations with regularity. The run defense still looks to be a work in progress and the injuries to Ty Warren and Marcus Thomas certainly aren’t helping the cause.

But to this point, I’ll take what I’ve seen from Dumervil and Miller. The exciting part is that they should only get better.

2 – THE OFFENSIVE LINE COULD BE PRETTY GOOD. Just when I thought that the Broncos would favor running behind the left side of the line, Willis McGahee runs behind Chris Kuper and Orlando Franklin on the right side two straight times near the goal line. The second time, McGahee got into the end zone for a touchdown. Huge.

Franklin looks like he could be the real deal at right tackle. Man, at 6-7, 330 pounds, he appears to be the Big Nasty. That dude is physical. And for a rookie to make that kind of impression is impressive.

And how steady is Chris Kuper? It is so easy to take a guy like that for granted. Throw in how Coach John Fox has dubbed J.D. Walton the Trash Can for Walton’s willingness to get down and dirty and all of a sudden this offensive line looks like it could be a darn good unit.

Let’s face it, they’ll need to be. We know how Coach Fox loves to run the ball.

3 – WILLIS McGAHEE APPEARS TO HAVE SOME GAS LEFT IN THE TANK. Again, it’s early but for a back that is listed at 235 pounds, he still gets around pretty well. I like how he got into the end zone from close in and he also looked good catching the ball.

I wouldn’t expect McGahee to get 25 carries a game but he and Knowshon Moreno could be a terrific pair of backs and the two of them could very well make life difficult for opposing defenses. Again, it’s early and it’s not the regular season. But so far, so good.

Now, we get to the third preseason game this Saturday when the Broncos host the Seahawks. It’s usually the preseason game in which the top line players see their most action. I’m interested in watching how well the Broncos play this week.

Who will you be watching most against Seattle and why?

Thanks for reading and sharing your thoughts.

Sincerely,
Mike

Mike. Burning the oil I see. I agree with all you said here. I was just saying in Mark Cooper’s last blog how O. Franklin and Kuper are starting to gel. I also have a concern with the availability of our big guys Warren and Thomas but I’m more concerned with our front seven maintaining gap control and GETTING OFF BLOCKS. Last year was some of the worst I’d seen in that regard. Saw it first hand from the 5th row of the south stands…at various games and it was atrocious. I feel like we have already improved here though. I’m excited to see how our defense fairs during the regular season when schemes are not vanilla and furthermore can the offense move the chains on third down and score more in the red zone? This game against the seahawks will be an indicator of what we have for the season. I’m ready…

Mister Rice, I would like to see nobody injured! ;)

I would have liked our Preseason to have included some teams that are more established on both sides of the ball, so that the Broncos would have a better gauge of how we do against established veterans/systems.

    Seattle,
How well we pressure Jackson without giving him the middle to step up and avoid the outside VonDooom.

How many touchdowns we score on our old AFC West rival.

Tebow to get the rest of the snaps in this game after Orton steps out- EFX seem to have already, by their *body* language, declared Tebow a loooong term project, which means Brady Quinn IS the man-behind Orton. So give Tim the time to develop in game 3, in his Home Crowd!

  3. baylinorcrush says:

    Steve,

thanks for keeping the folks updated on the upcoming contests for me in the last blog.

    Mike,

More than anything I am glad we will see the ones playing at least an entire half and I what I want to see is Orton running the two minute O to better gauge whether he is truly better with this team as advertised than he was with last year’s team. So let us have the ball inside the last two minutes before the half, pleeeeease. That’s the only way I can get a feel for where Orton is truly at now, not between the twenties when things go along smoothly, but at game end with a score needed, and since he won’t have the 4th quarter to do so hopefully he will have the opportunity to show me at the end of the first half.

But obviously I’m fooling myself because these preseason games don’t even count, specially just a first half, LOL, so I guess I’ll have to wait for the Raiders, which by the way is going to be an extremely weird game for Orton to have as his first regular season game considering the shellacking he took last year against them in the 14-59 Black Sunday defeat!

Will he be able to put that performance behind him?

I will know more about Orton after that game.

  4. baylinorcrush says:

And hearing it from Orton yesterday he will have no excuses not to perform well against the Raiders:

“Business as usual,” Orton said. “(I’m) playing pretty well right now, and the offense is getting close to where we need to be.”

Asked what he thought of hearing the news Monday that he will be the team’s regular-season starter, Orton said: “I didn’t have any thoughts on it to be honest with you. Business as usual.”

We got it “Fun” Orton, it’s a business, as usual, always a business, got it, business, no fun, no game, just a business, really exciting stuff, LMAO.

  5. baylinorcrush says:

This is how different our D will be under Allen, kind of shocking really but it sounds real good to me, by Klis:

The Broncos’ nickel back in 2011? The one and only Champ.

This is not a demotion. It is a change in philosophy.

“I’m tired of losing,” Bailey said, “so I’m willing to try anything.”

When the old dog was approached by Broncos defensive coordinator Dennis Allen about trying a new trick, Bailey was far from insulted.

“Nickel back is almost like playing linebacker,” Bailey said.

For quick review, the nickel back usually doesn’t play until the down-and-distance situation calls for a pass. The offense will bring in a third wide receiver, and the defense counters by bringing in a third cornerback.

In the Broncos’ case, Bailey already is in the game as the left cornerback. It’s Cassius Vaughn who comes in, but he takes Bailey’s outside left cornerback position, Andre Goodman stays at right cornerback and Bailey slides inside to the nickel, where he picks up the slot receiver.

“On third down, that’s where the ball goes most of the time,” Broncos quarterback Kyle Orton said. “So it’s great to have a guy like Champ play in there, a guy who can cover pretty much everything.”

Because the nickel back plays closer to the middle of the field, and offenses like to run against the nickel package, it helps if the nickel back is his team’s best-tackling defensive back.

Bailey always has been known as one of the NFL’s best-tackling cornerbacks. The nickel back also has more field to cover. Vaughn and Goodman can use the sidelines as boundaries. The nickel back covers the area from slot to opposite tackle.

“There’s a lot of things that go on in there,” Allen said. “And Champ’s a smart player. He’s been through it all. He understands it all. With some of the young guys we’ve got playing corner, we just felt like it would be the best thing for our team to move him inside. We can use him in a role he hasn’t been used in as much — pressure the quarterback, lock him down on the slot and do some different things outside. I think it gives us a lot of flexibility putting him in there.”

“It’s different,” Bailey said. “But I look at guys like Charles Woodson and Ronde Barber and see how well that they do it. At the same time, you have to be tough to do it. You have to be mentally tough to do it. I just think that at this point in my career, I can pick up things a lot faster than some of these younger guys. It’s not easy. But I like it.”

I like, it, I like it a lot!

  6. baylinorcrush says:

BTW, never really paid attention to this FB size:

Austin Sylvester, 6-foot-1, 255 pounds, wow!

If he can succesfully change from his linebacker position in Washington in college to his current FB position here, he is going to be a force to be reckoned with. Was glad to see him on the field Saturday, Larsen needs help there, Rosario also can plays the FB position and that should help him seal his roster spot as a TE, because Fox loves to use FBs, so much that he needs more than one, or two.

  7. baylinorcrush says:

TRB and Freak30 among others, this one is for you guys:

The Bears drafted the 6-foot-1, 303-pound Paea in the second round at No. 53 overall. The Broncos considered drafting him, but they selected UCLA safety Rahim Moore in the second round at No. 45 overall. Moore likely will be a starter as a rookie. With their second pick in the second round, No. 46 overall, the Broncos drafted Miami offensive tackle Orlando Franklin.

Paea was one of the strongest players available in this year’s draft. At the league’s scouting combine in Indianapolis, he set a bench-press record by doing 49 repetitions of 225 pounds. And he’s doing well with the Bears, who play a 4-3 defense.

Paea was the Pac-10′s defensive player of the year last season. He set an Oregon State record by forcing nine fumbles in his career, a strong indication that he loves collisions and can create turnovers.

The Broncos went into the draft determined to stick to their “board,” which they constructed after several months of player evaluations. On that board, Paea wasn’t ranked as highly as Moore or Franklin.

Here you have it, that was from Legwold.

  8. baylinorcrush says:

    Isn’t this refreshing?

A whole morning of news from me and not a single mention of Tebow.

Who is this guy Tebow anyway? LOL.

Next time I’ll talk about him is when he plays, other than that he is off my Bronco dictionary. So much easier this way….

  9. oldsouthstander says:

I went to pay my Directv bill today and found our that a massive number of people are like me and telling the NFL and Directv’s userous fee to stuff it. My bill was for $53 dollars more than it should have been. When I called them I was told the my basic NFL Sunday package had been automatically renewed even though I never asked for it to be. When I told them that they and the NFL could stick it where the sun doesn’t shine I was told that if I renewed the package today it would included all the goodies you paid extra for and that it was $20.00 less per paymnent. Talk to me about it next year!!!!

    Mike,

Thanks for your sharing your thoughts.

On your first point, it’s exciting to have two pass rushing specialists on our Team. Bunkley looks pretty tough playing the 3-tech position, which will open things up for Von & Doom. Really like the things Coach Allen is bringing to the defensive unit overall!

Coach Megazu had quite a bit of success in Carolina and no reason he wont’ be able to duplicate it here in Denver. Orlando Franklin made improvement from first preseason game to the second. No one ever notices when a lineman is doing well.. only when they make a mistake… example.. assigment missed and RB tackled in backfield for a loss. This by far has to be the biggest O-line in Denver history. We’ve got some big bookends now with the addition of Franklin to go along with Clady. Broncos now have 1581 lbs for building a massive wall in pass protection and power for run blocking.

A recent quote from Kyle Orton – “I think this group is the best group I’ve ever had,” Orton said.

Moreno & McGahee – Looking good.. ..with the success of the O-line, productivity of the RB’s should follow.

Excited to see our new Team take the field this coming Saturday at Sports Authority at Mile High!!

    GO BRONCOS!!!!!!!!!

In answer to your question Mike, I’ll be watching the Offenive & Defensive line… no player in particular.

Good luck on the whole no Tebow thing Bay. I started Firefox, Yahoo is my homepage, who is the main article about? Tebow. Geez, I wanted a break and here the mysterious Internet powers that be, suck me right back in.

  13. sndvl says:

    Morning Mr. Rice!

I’d like to see a continuation of last weeks performance from both sides of the ball. I’m also curious to see when (and if) there will EVER be a kickoff returned at Sports Authority Field at Mile High Stadium!

  14. sndvl says:

    Lol at yahoo!!!

  15. seweatherman1 says:

sndvl, Has anyone thought about training the kickers to not kink the ball into the next time zone every time? What about doing a suprise onside kick once in a while? Keep the opposing team guessing. I meam, line up normal, just do an onside kick. It would be an almost guarantee that our offense would be right back on the field. The opposition front line in this case is usually cover guys isn’t it, that rarely touch the ball? Besides that, it would put a little “bling” in the game for the fans. A bit of trickery so to speak.

  16. 1nOnlyTRB says:

Thx for the info on Paea Bay, I dunno how he coulda been ranked so little but we got 2 beast in exchange. As much as I like franklin I would exchange him for Paea in a heartbeat especially if we got to keep harris. Really think that kid is gonna be special and a pro bowler. Time will tell

I like what they plan to do with champ. Its what made the Packers so successful. Putting thier best CB everywhere on the field. You gotta have depth at CB to really pull that off but I think we can make it work. Champ is not just the best tackling CB, I think he is the best tackler on our team, period. Not talking big hits, Im talking textbook tackling, wrapping up, sure tackling. The man is amazing. Once he gets ur legs u are down. Will love to see him take out the nickle and possibly blitz as well. And with hopefully alot of 3rd and longs thx to doom and Miller, this should work well.

LMAO @ the business as ususal. Yea, not the most fun or energetic guy but he is our coaches guy what can ya say. I was watching a video of Tebows highlights last year, and his energy on the sidelines and excitement, with the jump bumps and helmet smashing, man, them guys were fired up. Orton is too conservative, need to learn to do that and fire up the troops. And have fun with it.

    Later days, TRB –

  18. 1nOnlyTRB says:

    Mike,

Like someone said above, I just want us to escape without injury. That would truly make me happy. I wanna see more of Orton. Even if its against a team he beat last year in the regular season. Im still not a believer that he has improved. I believe he is still last years Orton. And an improved run game and D may cover up the funk, but eventually u will smell it. Hopefully he has improved but i seriously doubt it. I think he has plateaued but all he gotta do is prove me wrong … I have no problems admitting when im wrong. TRB

  19. 1nOnlyTRB says:

    Pat Kirwan:

Tebow looks lost. It was sad to watch Tim Tebow at practice. When I first walked out on the field, he was running the scout team against the first defense. As practice continued, I got a chance to stand right behind him in the team drills and he looked lost trying to read the coverages and locate the right receiver. He escaped to his left most of the time and was inconsistent throwing the ball. You really want to cheer for this young man, but he has so much work to do before ever getting on the field — especially considering that the people running the Broncos aren’t the guys who drafted him. It was tough to watch.

I know no one wants to talk tebow but i gotta ask. Is this a normal thing in camps, players running scout team agaisnt the first string D. It sounds like a mighty tall order to fill. Maybe they are trying to accelerate his development but no wonder he looks bad in practice. TRB

  20. strandoftds says:

Oldsouthstander, good for you. It isn`t worth it. I hope these satelite and cable companys get the hint in that they all just gouge and the fans will no longer put up with it, NO THANK YOU!!

  21. 1nOnlyTRB says:

dont get me wrong, I know the scout team O has nothing to do with reading the D, thats on him. But I think it would be tough for anyone to work with that low level of talent, agaisnt the likes of doom miller on the rush and champ and company in the secondary. TRB

  22. strandoftds says:

I just 19 days huh? It`s coming up fast. LETTER RIP!!!!!

  23. baylinorcrush says:

TRB, it’s usually the last QB on your team who does the scouting team, last year it was Quinn, I heard Weber did some of it too, not a good sign for you know who since I said I wouldn’t say his name anymore unless he plays.

  24. baylinorcrush says:

Hey Mr. Rice do your nephews call you Uncle Ben’s? LOL.

  25. 1nOnlyTRB says:

I hear ya Bay. Lol i know u dont wanna say his name. I was just sincerly curious because I figured scout team O would go against scout team D, or the last team D or watever. Not the first team D. But thx for responding even tho I know u wanna stay away from that. TRB

  26. baylinorcrush says:

Yeah, enough folks will never let it go without me having to join in….

  27. dfanaj says:

This week I would like to see some stingy run defense. Oh, and some solid tackling. Everytime I head to my local Walmart, they play the top running plays of last year, and I keep seeing Marshawn Lynch breaking a bunch of tackles for that ridiculous run against the Saints. I don’t want to see any of that happening to us. Also, since Fox said that Orton is the starter, I want to see some excellent red zone performance from him. If he can produce TDs instead of FGs on a regular basis, then he’ll be OK in my book. Go Broncos!

  28. BeastFromEast92 says:

Goody and Vaughn covering the #1 and #2 WRs,with Champ playing nickel,I don’t know about that,I know Champ can play nickel easy, but who thinks Goody or Vaughn can cover the NFLs elite WRs???

I’m not saying it won’t work, but I am saying the only way it will work is if we have one Helluva pass rush,I guess we will see,I’m not doubting Fox,he’s made a true believer outta me so far,he’s a great coach, and I for one am stoked we got him,Allen seems to be a great DC too!!!

    GO BRONCOS!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  29. WieminCA says:

Kudos to our OL … but don’t forget, 2 of the 5 were drafted LAST YEAR by YOU KNOW WHO … if that’s part of McD’s legacy, then he was not a total loss … well – almost …

As for the “scout team” – don’t they try to emulate the Broncos’ next opponent?? – which means the STQB must try to run plays he’s not familiar with?? … help me with this …

On kick-offs – why not punt the ball … good hang time, good coverage … or is that legal?? … and – is it still a “free ball” on kickoffs?? … help me with this, too …

  30. stevecan2 says:

“is this a normal thing in camps, players running scout team against the first string D. It sounds like a mighty tall order to fill.”

Absolutely TRB. Is anyone effing kidding me, if this is what Tebow truly faced during this so called “level” playing field.???!!!????

I know what we have seen on this whole Tebow thing, is that he can’t make the first read, etc, etc. But with those odds against him, wholly hell in high water I never knew. If this is the competition he faced or even Quinn in “010 I will never doubt a 3rd string QB in the NFL again.

  31. stevecan2 says:

I have read the Orton to Loyd highlights one too many DAMN times told to me for the last mother effing time in one lifetime. OK, we get it, Orton and Loyd are a match made in some primordial soup called fate to Richard Dawkins. Loyd is a how many year wash up out of college and failed dream of how many? Before he finally struck a break with a team, that so had happened to have a coach, that crapped all over the best WR the team had seen since Rod Smith???!!!??? (reference to Brandon Marshall). C’Mon. It gets old when your most beloved team is 4-12. And to fathom, liking your starting QB even though the so called 4th sting is “your” hero the likes of JOHN ELWAY! It breaks my heart, it breaks my heart knowing that we will be 5-11 this year. So much hope, aspiration, dream, desire, when your own life is in shambles, your father died at 47 6 years ago, your mother (who has no health insurance) is dying because Obamacare don’t take effect until 2014), and NOT one gives a flying oopoola because someone in their family is on union strike. The effing tragedy. HOWEVER no matter what Timothy Richard Tebow does in his life, (college, NFL, High School, etc), he has bypassed the feelings I felt and conquered the MFing world! He is a LIFE effing CHAMPION. Ever wander why I feel so strong about him, now you do. I, too, not on such a national recognized level was right there with him in the trenches.

  32. 1nOnlyTRB says:

Yea man. I dunno if this is how its always been, and maybe not just here but around the league and if thats the case … man, 3rd stringers go through the ringer to stay on a team. Thats tough. But then again, it might just be Tebow specific. In the scrimmage game a couple saturdays back, Tebow played with the back ups agaisnt first team D … the other QBs did not. They may be trying to speed up his development process. When asked about that, Fox said “Tebow had the toughest task going up against the ones but he is a tough guy, he can handle it” … So maybe theres a method to the madness. TRB

  33. 1nOnlyTRB says:

Wow steve, not quite sure what just happened but I hope you are ok bro.

  34. WieminCA says:

ENOUGH!!! … if Tebow was so DAMN good, he’d stick out at practice, and there’d be now way to keep him from NUMBER !!!! … but he hasn’t done that … ergo – HE’S NOT AS GOOD AS YOU GUYS THINK!!! … get that through you’re F’n heads!!! … and move on to what IS!!!!

  35. WieminCA says:

    That’s NUMBER 1!!! … as in – TEBOW (NOT) …

  36. 1nOnlyTRB says:

Calm down wiemin, I think steve just had a moment.

I just shared the article from Pat Kirwan because it was written today, was new and I thought was relevant. I didn’t mean to open a can of Tebow worms.

I see why Bay stays away from the topic. I’ll do the same. TRB

  37. WieminCA says:

    Yeah – me, too … I promise … (hmmmmm) …

  38. stevecan2 says:

Okay WieminCA… I get it but you do not. Tebow has been doubted ever since Highschool. In Highschool he was told he would never make it. In College he was told he would never make it. (sound familiar?) It better, because if Elway was judged solely on his “mechanics” as seen by the College or NFL level scouts he would have sat the pine, in the current league. Elway’s motion and feetwork are absolutely horrid, compared to Tom Brady and Peyton Manning of today’s current “mindset”. The game has evolved since this “mindset: that you have held onto for some reason or another. Tom Brady, how many SB wins? Peyton Maning? The game has evolved, the dual threat QB, as in defenders not knowing to defend against the pass or rush of the QB is were the league is heading. YOu can’t see this because you fail to look to the past. It has progressed this way for years.

  39. royalbroncofan1 says:

Now you see why most bloggers are fed up and don’t want any of that… think we’ve all had enough of the media chewing him (TT) up and spitting him out. It is what it is.
    Enough said….

  40. stevecan2 says:

Let e elaborate. Elway was a college QB that was highly sought after. The league back then only care about wins. So much for that now… Death, life, we only care about the secondary, little things now….

  41. Orange_Crusher says:

I don’t care if Orton is crisp and accurate now….

When November rolls around and his arm is tired and he is throwing passes in the dirt….. well….. I’m not going to say “I told you so”, because I’m just not that type of fellow…..LOL

God help the noodle arm if the NFL goes to an 18 game schedule…..

  42. stevecan2 says:

I will subside for this morning. I will let all those who favor the QB1 to WR1 routes get em all pumped up to stay jolly, I do after all want more Bronco fans to be be jazzed about this year to buy tickets and give money to the coffers that will sign a real d-lineman next year. Our D is only one to two signings away from being a good enough reason to have John(( (3-9 winning seasons Fox) to be our HC)).

  43. bronctario says:

I know it sounds rough on the back-ups, but someone has to be the QB working out the defense; It happens all the time in practice. It was probably an assignment walkthrough for the 1st team D, but played at speed. It looks bad because that practice was for the defense to learn their roll, not for the scrimage QB to tear apart an opposition. It’s only because our guy gets so much more attention and coverage that any other depth guy in the history of professional sports that the article was written from his perspective. It was poor reporting and shouldn’t be read into too much.

  44. 1nOnlyTRB says:

LOL OC … I hear ya. But what can u do but accept what IS lol.

Apparently Kerry Collins pulled a favre. He is a colt now. TRB

  45. BeastFromEast92 says:

TRB,the Colts aren’t sure if Manning will recover from his neck injury in time to start the season,so I guess they wanted a veteran backup, and Kerry Collins proved to be a great backup with the Titans, actually better than Young, imo.

  46. 1nOnlyTRB says:

Yea i know BFE, they shoulda called us about Brady Quinn tho … Way better than Curtis ‘shoulda been a’ Painter not than Collins tho lol

Champ Bailey deflects a pass, then manages to snag it and drag two feet inbounds to complete the interception.

Brandon Minor breaks off a long gain on a screen pass during a 2-minute drill.

Adam Weber hits D’Andre Goodwin on a 40-yd TD pass during full-team drills.

For this 2-minute drill, the offense starts w/the ball on its own 40, tie game and 1:30 on the clock.

Orton leads the 1st-team to the 37-yd line and Prater drills the 54-yd game-winning FG as time expires. Next up: Tim Tebow.

Tebow ran the ball for 15 yds on the first play and got the offense to the 30-yd line, but Hauschka’s 47-yd FG attempt was no good.

Just some twitter talk from practice.
