Examining Our Expectations

November 20th, 2009 - 8:05pm by mike_rice

Three straight losses have left the Broncos tied with the Chargers in the AFC West. I agree with Broncos’ Head Coach Josh McDaniels, who this week said Sunday’s game against San Diego won’t decide the division title and won’t knock either team out of the playoff race.

I agree with that. There is no chance the season will end on Sunday. In that sense, it is not must-win, do-or-die or any other overused term.

At the same time, there have been several disturbing developments during the Broncos’ three-game losing streak. The offense has sputtered, the defense isn’t playing as well as it did earlier in the season, and now some injuries are creeping in.

Sunday’s game against the Chargers is a home game against a division foe. Those are critical. The stakes are magnified. The winner only gets a leg up and the loser still has time to recover. But it would much better to end the losing streak and get the leg up.

In the first six games we not only expected the Broncos to play well, we expected them to win. Throw in a little adversity and all of a sudden things don’t line up with our expectations.

The crazy part is that if we knew the Broncos would be 6-3 after nine games, I think many of us would have taken that in a heartbeat. In fact, I don’t just think that, I guarantee it.

But with their great start, the Broncos raised the level of expectation of those who pull for the team.

Here is what I expect the rest of the season:

1 – I EXPECT THE BRONCOS TO PLAY HARD. I know, this doesn’t count for much in pro football. But there is no way this team will pack it in. I’m not sure how many games they’ll win but I know they’ll continue to prepare hard, work hard and play hard.

2 – I EXPECT THE BRONCOS TO BE IN THE HUNT FOR THE AFC WEST TITLE THE ENTIRE SEASON. I don’t know which team will win it, but I don’t see the Broncos completely collapsing. Is it possible? Of course it is possible. But it is also possible for them to win five or six of their remaining seven games. After all, they did start 6-0.

3 – I EXPECT THE UNEXPECTED. We talked about this a couple of months back. On the one hand, not having any idea what will happen is tough. It can be maddening. On the other hand, it is fun. There is something compelling about not having a good feel for what will happen in any given game.

Abraham Lincoln once said, “The best thing about the future is that it only comes one day at a time.”

I guess it is a cliché for a reason. In the Broncos’ case, the future comes one game at a time, with San Diego up next.

The Broncos simply need a win. It doesn’t matter how they get it. I expect that if they beat the Chargers, it won’t come easy.

What are the keys for beating the Chargers and what are your expectations for this game and the rest of the season? As always, thank you for reading and posting your thoughts.

Best,
Mike

Great post Mr. Rice and thank you for keeping it in perspective.
I feel like a lot of the fair weather fans have started to boo hoo about the three losses and I really can’t stand hearing them.
It’s one thing to read the game books and dissect what went wrong in order to understand and express how one thinks The TEAM should fix their mistakes. But when people start spouting off about things without any facts and become really emotional and say things like some one sucks ….. These are the people I can’t take anymore.

I’m right there with ya on your expectations I EXPECT THE DENVER BRONCOS TO PLAY WELL (EVEN IN A LOSS, I ONLY GET UPSET WHEN THEY LOSE POORLY).

I EXPECT THE BRONCOS TO BE IN THE HUNT FOR THE AFC WEST TITLE THE ENTIRE SEASON AS WELL AND THIS GAME WON’T DECIDE THE DIVISION BUT IT SURE MEANS A LOT .

THE UNEXPECTED DOES HAPPEN LOOK AT THE WASHINGTON GAME.

    TIME OF POSSESSION ! ! !

    GO BRONCOS ! ! !

I expect us to play hard, and not give up (too many leaders on this team for that).I think we’ll win the game Sunday, and I think we’ll bring home the AFC WEST Title(where it belongs).I also think we’ll bounce back and win 5 out of our last 7 games.IMO.Great post Mike, keep’em comin’ I like reading your thoughts.GO BRONCS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  3. baylinorcrush says:

Mike, what we need for this game in a very simple analysis is:

    1) Run the ball more than 50% of the plays.
    2) Pressure Rivers all game long.
    3) Keep Sproles in check on ST (Berger, we’ll do need those high, long hang time, kicks bad).

If we do those three things, I believe we’ll win, if we are not successful on even just one of those three things, I believe we could easily lose. Just my opinion. My pick is 19-17 Bronco win.

As far as the level of importance of this game, I disagree with most people about it, so don’t take it personally. We are playing for a THREE game swing. We lose we’re one down to SD, we win we’re one up on them plus we win the head to head tiebreaker, so in essence we would be two games up. I don’t buy for one second that this is not a must game win, looking back on the season at season end, my guess is anyone will be real hard pressed to find a game in the season that was more meaningful than this one. I understand that people like McD and you, or anyone else associated with the Bronco organization, would want us to believe that this really isn’t a must win game, not because mathematically it isn’t, but more simply because if we lose the organization doesn’t want to have the fans get anymore disenchanted than they already are. That’s just business sense, I understand it, having run my own businesses over 20 years, but, with all due respect, I don’t have to buy it. This is the most important game we will play this regular season is how I see it, with one exception, if SD collapses for the rest of the season, which I seriously doubt as it is not what they usually do, they only get better.

As far as what will the rest of the season hold for us, I’ll reserve my comments until after this game, even probably after Thursday night when the picture for the rest of our season will have clearly taken shape one way or the other and it’s only 5 days away. No reason to take a chance at guessing now and maybe looking like a fool for only 5 days…LOL.

“The crazy part is that if we knew the Broncos would be 6-3 after nine games, I think many of us would have taken that in a heartbeat. In fact, I don’t just think that, I guarantee it.”

That is absolutely correct. At the start of the season I was looking at being happy with a 9-7 season. After being 6-0 my outlook only changed to 11-5. However where the out look is changing once again is not that we lost the last three it was how we have lost. If say we lost the last three like the Ravens lost three before playing us then no need to worry. (They lost three with by a total of 11 points.) Yet there now are the usual injury problems surfacing, only making it harder to believe that we can hang with the big boys once again. (NYG, PHI, and IND.) Lose against S.D. and I find it hard to foresee anything better than a 9-7 record on the season missing the playoffs. Do I want to be wrong? Absolutely. Will I be in full Bronco gear on Sunday? Absolutely. Will I be ready to defend the Broncos against anyone who shows discontent? Every single day. Ask anyone who knows me, there are two things that I will fight to the death for, 1) defending my faith and 2) the greatest NFL franchise in existence.

  5. baylinorcrush says:

stevecan2, you’re in good shape, because faith we need. LOL.

  6. RockyMts69 says:

I have to disagree on one thing, IMO THIS IS A MUST WIN game for us. We need this win so we can control the AFC West, and we need a win so we can start rebuilding the momentum and confidence that we have lost here recently. Winning this game would propel us into the Thusday night game with a lot of motivation and determination.

I just hope McD will OPEN up the play book some more and stop playing vanillia football. What I’ve learned about Moreno, he’s better when you can get him on the outside. Buckhalter is the man you want up the middle.

And with that being said, I really our O-line performs with perfection and gives Simms enough time to make the appropriate reads on his WR and not force the ball.

  7. Marshallman-15 says:

Well, we’d better win. I don’t want to have to sell myself to humiliation after all the smack I’ve thrown out there. Until week 8, I had every intention on pushing every SD fan off the edge, but now I know that my plan will backfire for sure IF we cannot pull this off.

Denver, I’ve sold my soul to you, and now I want you to either win or give me a refund

    BRONCOS 4 LIFE!!!

    NO OTHER CHOICES!!!

WIN TOMORROW OR MAKE A NAME FOR YOURSELF AS THE TEAM THAT CHOKES EVERY YEAR

  8. baylinorcrush says:

I just realized that in my early year predictions, even so I have us winning this game, I have us with a 6-4 record after it, man I hope I’m wrong, not about beating SD, but about the 6-4. One of those time in my life where I so wish I was wrong. LOL.

  9. baylinorcrush says:

Rocky, glad to see I’m not the only one about the must win game thing, just posted about it a couple posts above yours. Man it must be real bad news to live in SD right now, I feel for you, you must want a win at least as bad as any of us, otherwise the abuse you will sustain over there…. good luck.

  10. BLINDFAITH says:

KEEP DREAMING……… WE HAVE NO SHOT AT WINNING THIS ONE. WE JUST HAVE TO HOPE THAT THE TEAM STARTS TO MIX THINGS UP AND FIND SOME PLAYMAKERS

  11. baylinorcrush says:

One thing I’m glad about is Dawkins sees this game as a must win game, in his press conference he said this would be like a playoff game, and correct me if I’m wrong a playoff game is a must win game. So here is to hoping the team follows his leadership and plays this game for what it truly is, a must win game. If we come out of this game a loser having played it like a playoff game, I’ll be ok with it. If on the other hand we come out with a loss and didn’t leave it all out on the field, players and play calling, I will be seriously distraught to put it mildly.

  12. footballMANIAC says:

This game may not be must-win or do-or-die, but it is a would-be-really-nice-to-win game.

  13. baylinorcrush says:

BLINDFAITH, I have to show you what I just posted the day before yesterday, it was addressed to brian schneider and talked about blind faith, I just think it’s too funny:

Hey, brian, sorry I wasn’t here the other day when you got some tong lashing over not being a true fan, what a bunch of you know what, I would of had your back. Don’t worry about these type of fans, in my eye they are more cheerleaders than fans. We say what’s on our mind because we have earned that right, they just follow the flock regardless of whether there is the promise land or a cliff right in front of them. Blind Faith, just like the band of the same name, but they wouldn’t know that either, way too old for them, like me, hahahaha!

  14. RockyMts69 says:

Bay, working here in SD isn’t that bad. The weather is GREAT, the girls are pretty :) , and the best thing is….I founf a TRUE BLUE (and Orange) Broncos bar right up the road! I love the irony.

I also love Dawkins attitude towards this game. The only way we’re going to win is if they come out playing mad as hell.

  15. RockyMts69 says:

The other thing why I beleive that this game is must win, I want to see Denver win this game for the Barrel Man.

And if ANYBODY in the front office is reading this…Tim McKernan belongs on the Broncos Ring of Fame!!!

  16. broncosfan01 says:

I totally agree with you baylin, this is a must win for us on sunday. We need to stop the losing streak before it gets to the player as well. If we lose this game the players are going to start to not believe in themselves as a team. Everyone is right when they say at the beginning of the season we would be happy to be 6-3. The team spoiled us after starting 6-0 though. Now the expectations have risen and even the doubters from the beginning of the season were starting to believe that this team could do more. Lets get back to our winning ways, play hard for 60 minutes and maintain your positions. As always great post Mr. Rice, I really enjoy reading all the posts. Lets take what is ours, the division title.

    —GO BRONCOS—

  17. BLINDFAITH says:

MAYBE RIVERS WILL GO DOWN WITH AN INJURY EARLY IN THE GAME AND THEN WE CAN HAVE A DUEL OF THE BACKUPS!

  18. mike_rice says:

footballMANIAC says…”This game may not be must-win or do-or-die, but it is a would-be-really-nice-to-win game.”

    Very well put.

I like the discussion about the term “must-win game.”

That term is one of my pet peeves. To me, a must-win game is one in which a team is eliminated from something big if it loses…such as a division title, a playoff berth, etc.

We all know the game against the Chargers is crucial, critical, really important and all of that. But if the Broncos were to lose, from what would they be eliminated? Nothing, at least that I can tell.

If they lose, the Broncos would put themselves behind the proverbial eight ball in the race for the AFC West and they would fall back closer to the pack of the teams that are chasing wild card berths. No one is pretending anything else.

But if the Chargers game is truly must-win, then what happens if San Diego wins? Do the Broncos pack in the rest of the season? Of course not.

Just some thoughts. Thanks to all for yours. Good stuff.

    Best,
    Mike

  19. coachemup says:

Should be a hard fought game. Broncos win one for the barrel man 22-21

    coach

  20. Big D 44 says:

First of all BLINDFAITH….. It’s totally OK that you feel that way but I think its a bit ridiculous to say that “we have no chance to win this game.” Come on now. Of course, if we continue to play the way we have the last 3 weeks then you would be absolutely right. If we can somehow play like we did the first 6 games we have a great chance to win. IMO. Trust me I am just as dissapoined but please don’t count our team as dead. At least not yet. Like Baylin said wait till after the giants game.

Also, I do agree with Baylin about what we need to do to win. Our D needs to be attacking like we did the first 6 games. Teams are coming out in formations to get us to play nickle and prevent. That is when we get our butt kicked big time. I hope we do not fall for that and bring some good old nasty Nolan D to the table on Sunday. I live in So Cal and will be very sad if we do what we did last year. Come on boys regroup and kick some you know what.

    GO BRONCOS….

  21. Big D 44 says:

    Oh yeah.. Broncos win 24-17.

  22. cobraowner2009 says:

SACK RIVERS!!! SACK RIVERS!!! SACK RIVERS!!! SACK RIVERS!!! SACK RIVERS!!!

5 Sacks and Philip Rivers and the San Diego Chargers go DOWN!!!

Let’s go Broncos! Win this one for Barrel Man!

  23. D~J~C~#24is#1 says:

First of all. All this nonsense about “must win” or “not a must win”
IMO. EVERY game is a must win!!! If you play like that good things will happen. That’s something this team kinda lost in the past few weeks. During the first six weeks leading to the by week, our team played with aggression and hunger like they needed to prove to everyone that they were/(are) a good team. and they did, and then they went to the by week and felt good like they established themselves as a great team and they had. If this team gets back to playing like a TEAM no hot shots. Especially on D. and if we get a balanced offensive attack, and if we get pressure on Rivers ALL game then I think we can come away with the W.
And yes this is a MUST win!!! EVERY game is!!!!! Play like that and we (as a team) will be fine.
Prediction: The Broncos pull it together and earn a hard fought W
    23-17

  24. baylinorcrush says:

I met the barrel man twice, the first time in Pasadena for the 86 superbowl against the Giants, it was outside the stadium pre-game and I got his picture taken, he had mid length blond hair and was real young. The second time was at hafltime at the Superdome at a game against the Saints in December of 2000, I got my buddy to take a picture of us together and all those pics are in my album, he was pretty old already and looked like Santa Klaus. He was real friendly both time and I’ll always remember those moments. Man, his new barrel had awesome artwork with the new horse logo on it, and also another horse much meaner and space age looking. His original barrel was much more conventional with the old horse logo, the “D” horse and denver broncos spelled out.

  25. D~J~C~#24is#1 says:

I agree with what your saying Mr. Rice, if we lose it’s not the end of the season by any means, but my point is; play EVERY GAME like it’s your last!!!!!!!!

  26. Marshallman-15 says:

the nice thing is, after this week, SD will probably have more “tough” games.

    Denver San Diego
    ——– — ——-
    NY KC
    KC CLE
    IND -COWBOYS-
    OAK -BENGALS-
    PHI – TITANS-
    KC WAS

I personally see more hardship (especially the last 3 of 4 weeks) and EVEN IF WE DO LOSE, they may lost 3 in a row right after 2 easy games. PLUS, WAS proved that easy games can turn into long days if anything goes wrong.

KEEP FAITH, I STUMBLED MYSELF A FEW DAYS AGO. REMEMBER THAT ANYTHING CAN HAPPEN & WE COULD VERY WELL TAKE THE AFC WEST FROM SAN DIEGO THE WAY THEY TOOK IT FROM US LAST YEAR!

  27. baylinorcrush says:

DJC24, playing every game like it’s your last sounds real good in theory, but with a 16 game season we know that’s not the case, no NFL team can sustain that, but for this one I agree 120%, play it like it’s your last.

  28. tnalen66 says:

Sorry Mike & others but.. i do feel this is a must win game. If we would of won last week it would be a big game.Since we have lost 3 straight and are tied w/ SD it is a must win. If we lose i do not think we will catch SD since they really only have 2 games that they could lose (at Dallas &Cinny at SD). They will win KC , Cleveland, Wash and possible Tenn. We have KC x2 Oakland and 2 that we could lose Philly, NYG and a lose to Indy. If we win we have a 2 game lead cuz of the sweep. We let SD catch up. They have basically owned the west , 3 straight and 4 of 5years
I think if we lose we will not make the playoffs since Pitt and Balt will have the tie breakers over us and Houston is doing very good.I Hope the players feel this is a playoff game and BRING IT!!!!

  29. tnalen66 says:

PS WIN IT FOR BARREL MAN!!!

  30. baylinorcrush says:

tnalen66, you are right this is a must win game because of the entire picture, not just the pure mathematics of it. To me it’s just trivializing the situation to say this is not a must win game, I believe most of us know better, but as I said people within the organization couldn’t say something like that without getting in hot water over it, so I take it for what it is, but I bet you even McD knows this is a must win game, won’t say it, but thinks it, must think it, it’s at home for a two game lead rather than one game down, A THREE GAME DIFFERENCE, I repeat for the third time this week. Come on if that’s not enough to make it a must win, nothing is.

  31. sndvl says:

Great article Mr. Rice! I’m curious what the locker room sentiment is about expectations for tomorrows game. With that said, all I expect is for the Broncos to play hard. For 60 minutes. In all 3 phases of the game. I also expect the “12th” man to be a factor. It was lost on me that this is our first home divisional game. So Invesco should be rockin’.
And I expect that the veterans on this team- Stokely, Dawkins, Graham, Bailey, Weigman, Gaffney, Haggan, et al; will get this team back on the winning track. Good luck and GO BRONCOS!!!!!!!

  32. RockyMts69 says:

Just exactly when do these games become a ‘must win’ if this one isn’t a ‘must win’ game??? Next week when we host NY, or when we go on the road to KC and then Indy??? NY is going to be fighting for their NFC East football lives next week, Denver has a horrible record in KC in the Month of December, and Indy…well, do I really need to say anything?

Granted we beat SD already, but the humiliating loss from last year still bothers me. I want to SWEEP the Chargers. I want to see Rivers get body slammed into the turf!

  33. r8r h8rdude says:

I love the Barrel Man, I hope the Broncos can make his dream come true and make Phillip Rivers taste Mile High dirt. Get loud Mile High, this game is important!!!!!

  34. footballMANIAC says:

We definitely proved that getting in Rivers’ face throws the Chargers off, but we will have to worry more about their run game this time around. Our run defense hasn’t been doing as well, and their run offense is picking up momentum. This game is definitely not the end of the line, but winning it would give us a significant advantage. I think we will come our more motivated than the Chargers and play more physically. Look for Eddie Royal to have a good game; he’s had the Chargers’ number every other time we’ve played them. The first game last year he caught the last two passes to win the game, the second time he had 8 for 74 or something like that, and earlier this season he had the PR and KR touchdowns. This game could prove to be a great point to turn momentum back in our favor.

  35. LKW 7 23 49 80 says:

I agree with your perspective here, Mr. Rice. While this is a very important game, there is a danger to a team putting too much weight on one game barely over halfway into the season. If the Broncos players put all of their emotional eggs into this one basket, so to speak, and they were to lose the game, the feeling of disaster could make it harder for everyone to put maximum effort into the still very significant remaining six games. Conversely, winning “THE must win” game could lead to an emotional letdown, as some have speculated may have happened after the back-to-back triumphs over NE and SD (the first time).

And a loss tomorrow really woudn’t be the end of playoff aspirations – or even West contention. While the Broncos would be a game behind the Chargers, they would be even with San Diego in the next tiebreakers, each with one loss in division to date and three in conference (both with losses to Balto and Pitt, as it happens). Denver would need to win one more than the ‘Bolts, of course, and likely have to win out in the division, but they can’t allow any loss with so much of the season remaining to put them into despair – what would have happened if the Chargers had given up when they were 4-8 last year? (And that reminds me that SD isn’t exactly following the same pattern that they’ve had in recent years – rather than rallying at the end of the year, they’ve gone on a winning streak in the middle. Losing a few at season’s end would be a change for them – but they’ve already shown that history isn’t necessarily repeating; and winning eleven in a row, or even ten out of eleven, would be quite a task.)

And the wild card hopes are even brighter; even conceding one wild card spot to Pittsburgh, the other closest contenders, Baltimore and Houston, have very difficult schedules themselves.

None of which would matter if the Broncos can’t put together a more consistent effort in all phases in the same game, of course. The offense was showing excellent signs before Orton was injured; if that progress can be maintained, with either a recovered Orton or a fully-practiced Simms, and the defense can return to a more dominant, “downhill” attack…. Royal has shown he can be a force on returns, and if coverage can stay strong…. Certainly some ifs, and the season could go either way from here. But I certainly think that the team which won those first six games is capable of pulling off several more victories, even with a three or even four game losing streak; and completely hanging their hats on this one contest, even against our strongest divisonal rival, could likely do more harm than good, IMHO.

I would feel more confident about winning tomorrow’s contest if Orton were definitely playing; but hopefully, if he’s needed, a full week of practice will let Simms – who I believed could be pretty good before the season began – show that godawful performance of last week to have been just an abberation. The first San Diego game may have cost Brett Kern his job; if Berger’s hang time can continue to allow the coverage team to get into excellent position, Sproles should be neutralized, or at least contained. (If his distance doesn’t improve, consistently, he’s probably a liability long-term, and I hope McD will be willing to replace him, if necessary, after this return bout with Sproles.) An offense learning to unleash itself, up against a pretty weak SD defense; a Broncos D which held the Chargers offense to 17 in our first meeting; and a special teams unit which scored two touchdowns against theirs last time, with a punter selected to neutralize their return game. With the possibility of Orton missing the game, and San Diego’s O maybe hotter, our defense maybe still a little colder, factored in, I’ll guess Denver Broncos 27, San Diego 20.

And whatever tomorrow’s outcome, it has been a good season for this largely brand-new team, with a good foundation for an excellent future! GO BRONCOS!

  36. LKW 7 23 49 80 says:

Oop – correction: San Diego only scored 16 on offense last game (heh).

  37. BradJamesBroncoFan says:

I’m with Monodono, it’s all about TOP, especially in the 4th Quarter when Buckhalter and Moreno can gash the Super Sparklers for big gainers. GO BRONCOS!!!

  38. Ikiratuki says:

I’m going to predict a loss for the broncos for good luck. 24-7 chargers. Tomlinson will have a big pass catching day.

  39. mike_rice says:

sndvl…my sense is the players believe they are on a good team and they have to get back to playing the way they did during the first six games of the season.

More than one guy has said the key is for every guy to simply do his job, not to try to make the big play, cover for someone else. Do your job and trust the guy next to you will do his.

They know they’ve lost three straight games. They know this is an important game. I believe they are confident they can win it.

RockyMts69…to me, by definition it is a must-win game when the Broncos are eliminated from something big if they don’t win it. I could also go along with the thinking that it is a must-win game if losing means the situation is so dire or unlikely to turn around in the Broncos’ favor.

But let’s say for a moment the Broncos lose to the Chargers. They would be one game behind San Diego in the division with six games left. I realize they would have lost four straight games and the Chargers would then be on a five-game winning streak. But being behind by one game with six remaining is hardly a situation that one would deem dire or unlikely to turn around.

Even if the Broncos’ losing streak hits four games, taking the leap to then assume they won’t win any more (or just one more, say) the rest of the season is, in my opinion, a huge stretch.

All of this goes back to one of the points I’ve been making all year…we have to wait and see…and embrace the unknown of what is going to happen.

    Mike

  40. baylinorcrush says:

D Day, GO BRONCOS, give it all you got, win or lose I’ll be satisfied. Anything less than giving it your all, I’ll be freaking mad as heck! That’s the way it is, no middle ground for today, no excuses tomorrow, put up or shut up type of game, the stage is set, this is why you make the big bucks and we spend the big bucks watching you. Follow your leader Dawkins who says this is going to be like a playoff game and play as a group, everyone of you, like it is a playoff game. Then whatever comes out of it will be acceptable but if you don’t lay it all out and lose, you will have lost a lot of respect from some of us, including I, even so you’ve had a great unexpected start this year. What do you want to make out of this year? The answer starts today.

P.S. Love to see all the opinions regarding the must win or non must win aspect of this game, one thing is clear, regardless of how valid points are made by either side, it obviously is not changing the opinion of the other side. That’s why we shall all agree to disagree on this one, and I, for one, say let’s go get us a win in this must win game. LOL.

  41. baylinorcrush says:

BTW, as far as the contest go and as you all should know by now, all picks are in, no picks on game day.

  42. baylinorcrush says:

Mike, FYI, this is how Woody Paige views this game in this morning article in the DP (excerpt):

… the Broncos and the Chargers are playing for the division title today. Winner takes the West; loser won’t make the playoffs.

One 11-5 team last season didn’t qualify for the postseason. Josh McDaniels remembers. And 8-8 certainly won’t get there this season.

This isn’t like a playoff game. It’s likely a playoff game.

  43. RockyMts69 says:

A win gives us momentum, confidence, and reassurance to finish out the season strong. A win puts the Chargers a game back.

Remember, the Chargers have already SWEPT KC and the Raiders. We still have two games facing KC and one more with Oakland.

When you look at what’s going on with the rest of the divisions, the Steelers are playing good football even though they lost to Cincy twice. The Jags and the Ravens are a game back from Wild Card contention.

After what we experienced last year with losing three of our last four games, I would say this game is some what significant in regards to the AFC West.

Baylinorcrush makes a valid point about the Pats missing out on the play-offs with an 11-5 record.

I have been watching this morning NFL shows and they keep on showing a clip on “are the Broncos heading for a collapse again” and it shows this young kid running his hand through his hair as his heads slumps down with total despair on his face as he watches us lose another game. That kid is the real thing already, a true Bronco fan, you can just see it, and he might only be 7/8 yrs old, priceless!

    It’s official, Simms is starting.

    Bronco Nation:
Simms is a go so I think he will be ready but then again he is a lefty and chargers could scheme to his blind side. The O-line needs to step it up and play better both running and pass protection to give us a chance to keep this game under control! Read that MB says he is in love with Simms arm on the DP site. Let’s hope he catches a few long balls. I also would agree that if Rivers thinks Champ is faltering and can be had is a mistake. Champ could take one all the way back in this game. He has done it before. So in closing we have two intangibles working for us in that we are HOME and the Broncos should be up for AFC show down. And need to prove 6-0 was no fluke and show the pride in stopping a 3 game loosing skid. My gut tells me a close game and I feel my emotions are in high gear. So no beer today. The dog’s better hide and the phones will be turned off.
