A Much-Needed Break

March 24th, 2009 - 7:04am by mike_rice

The stakes are high. The emotions are raw. Everyone wants to see a resolution in the situation between the Broncos and quarterback Jay Cutler and we all wanted it yesterday.

The fact is that sometimes things just take time.

If you had asked me two weeks ago how I thought this saga would end, I would have said without a doubt I believed Jay Cutler would be back as the Broncos’ starting quarterback in 2009.

Now, I can only hope he will be back.

The tough part in trying to come to an opinion about a situation such as this is that people on the outside, and I include myself in that group, don’t really and truly know what is going on. People might think they know based on who tells what to whom.

But when it gets right down to it, we weren’t in the meetings. We didn’t hear the various conversations that went on. The people who were in the meetings and were involved in the conversations have often come away with much differing thoughts on what transpired.

I have never liked playing the blame-game; it just doesn’t accomplish much. So I’m not going to sit here and say who I think is right in this whole thing because I just don’t know. Call that a cop-out if you like but sometimes I believe we all think too highly of our uninformed opinions.

Early this week, Broncos Head Coach Josh McDaniels told the NFL Network that Jay Cutler is “our quarterback.” While teams have been contacting the Broncos about possible trades for Cutler, to this point, the message back seemingly has been the Broncos are not interested in a deal. I’m glad for that. I hope it is a message that the organization wants Cutler to be playing in the Mile High City in 2009.

On the other hand, I can understand it if any player gets wind of a possible trade and has some issues with that. Understandably, it is a sensitive topic for players.

This is a complex situation in which both parties take a side and have their opinions. Of course, the rest of us also have our opinions about who is more right, based on the limited (and sometimes inaccurate) information we have.

But our opinions don’t matter a hoot. All that matters is what the Broncos organization thinks and what Jay Cutler thinks. I can only hope each side handles things in such a way that maximizes the possibility of this whole thing getting worked out.

Is it past that point for Cutler? I don’t know. I certainly hope not.

I do, however, think the latest pause in the back-and-forth has been good. Hopefully it is the first step in the process of the two sides working out their differences. Right now, as we sit here in mid-to-late March, the one thing the two sides undeniably have is time.

While it would be great if Cutler were taking part in the offseason workouts, the fact is those workouts are voluntary and the players are only conditioning. Cutler has said he will participate in all mandatory team activities. The first mini-camp is in April and I’m not sure the organization has deemed that one mandatory.

There is no rush for the Broncos to put Cutler on the open market. There is also no reason to think Cutler could never be happy playing for the Broncos again. I hope the two sides talk again and that progress is made toward reconciliation.

Time. We all say how great it would be if we just had more of it. In this case, the Broncos and Cutler have exactly that. And I believe it is wise for them to take advantage of it.

If you have thoughts about how you think this situation will end up, feel free to post. I always appreciate your thoughts.

Healthy debate and an exchange of ideas are good. Taking shots is not and such posts will not be tolerated. By posting you agree to abide by the code of conduct and posts that do not fall underneath the code will be deleted.

I am on the fence like you Mike. However, I find myself having to take McDaniels’ side on a couple of internet forums simply because it seems the majority of Denver fans are taking Cutler’s side in all of this. As you have said, time will be the best remedy and hopefully a successful one.

  2. killerkod says:

I want Jay back, but I only want Jay back if he really wants to be back. There’s no point in keeping a disgruntled QB in the line-up cause he just won’t put his heart and soul into it…but instead just go through the motions. The team, and the fans deserves better than that.

There is one common element that both should recognize as being most important, and that’s their desire to win. I can tell that McDaniels really wants to win, I mean he has a lot to live up to….and I think that fire he’s displayed has been missing from Denver’s sidelines in the last few years.

I can also see that in Jay……he’s a gamer and has that desire to win a championship. He’s worked hard to get where he is and has the potential to be a Sper Bowl champ.

So both need to recognize that there is an opportunity in front of them to create some magic together. It’s not about individuals here, it’s about the team. Cutler is not the Broncos, McD is not the Broncos, they are all part of the bigger picture and the TEAM needs both of their skill sets to be successful.

I truly believe the desire to win will be the key in getting over this whole debacle. At least that’s what I keep telling myself!

    Mike,
I agree, it is hard to know exactly what is going on and who is to blame unless you were in the meetings. It has been such a huge NFL story in this offseason (probably the biggest story) and every sports network/commentator has put its own spin on the situation. I think both parties have equal blame, neither one seemed to communicate with eachother. If they had open communication, they would not be in this situation. I agree, I think a little time to cool things down and for everyone to take a step back and evaluate the situation is a good thing. With a little time and cool heads, McD and Cutler need to meet one on one without agents, gms, ect.

  4. Hudcer24 says:

Hello all first post here even though I read everyday. I agree with Beef above me they need to get together and work this out one on one.

  5. KMA says:

I wonder If Jay has had any contact with other team mates? What I am getting at is that when he reports to the mandatory team meetings and activities as he said he would, he may see that they (the team) needs him to be there. And I do like that McDaniels was very up front and definitive about Jay being “our quarterback”. To me this puts the onus on Jay to show up and be the team leader McD is asking him to be. If he does not, then I believe you start to see the trade winds blow.

  6. Jack_Fan says:

Something needs to be decided soon.

Either Jay will play and cooperate or he won’t.

If he won’t cooperate and he has a bad attitude all year and the team suffers because of it. They might as well get all they can now in a trade.

Better to have a bad season with a couple 1st round picks and a stop-gap QB than to waste a season with a QB who wants out anyway.

The only way to fix things will be for Josh to commit to Jay and visa versa.

    Jack

P.S. Bly is still unemployed! Guess the whole league is just dumb huh?

  7. Kurtz says:

    Mike,

I would like to know your take on the subject of “anonymous sources” and their role in this story. It seems that such sources have often inflamed this controversy and made the truth more obscure. I’ve come to believe that some of these “sources” may have no real facts to contribute but are just trying to push an agenda or stir things up. So is the media being manipulated by the many “sources” they keep referring to? How should the media deal with sources who refuse to go on the record?

Since you are part of the media, I would like know your thoughts. Thanks.

  8. orangecrushgrl says:

After reading post after post after post on here, I have to agree with Mike about the fans pt of views…..we really don’t have any say in anything that goes on within the organization….all we can do is wait and hope that things will get resolved and there is time….I believe that we will have difficulty without Jay during our season, but be if it may we can survive without him….no one is to blame yet everyone is to blame, why even bother with the blame game….no matter what tho, I will be a fan 4ever.

  9. rustycletis says:

I watched the entire interview with McDaniels, and I didn’t buy it. I think they are planning on trading Jay. You can tell a lot from facial expressions when questions are asked. You could almost see a half grin when McDaniels was saying Jay is our QB. Every time he said it, he did the same thing. This wasn’t present during the other parts of the conversation. I think he is lying. I can’t blame him because what else can be done at this point. Jay is upset because he doesn’t trust the coach, so finally coming out and admitting you lied after all this time probably will only confirm Jay’s opinion. I think Denver is looking for the best deal for Jay and this is an attempt to boost his value. If everyone knows how bad the situation really is, then his value will diminish because teams know we will want to get rid of him. The only good thing going for Denver is the interest level for Cutler. That should keep his value up. I hope they keep Jay because we aren’t going to find a better QB that isn’t near retirement age. However if he can’t brush this off, then it may be better moving on. Unhappy players are distractions. We don’t need a TO situation. It just sucks. We make all these moves to bring in veteran players on defense, and now we may be starting over at the QB position. We were trying to win now. If we let Jay go, all these veteran moves (like Dawkins) will be for nothing. Dawkins may have signed a 5 year deal, but does anyone really think he will be playing at a high level after about 2 more years? McDaniels isn’t wrong if he doesn’t want Jay. It is his decision. The place he messed up was with the rebuilding process. Don’t sign a bunch of veteran players and spend a lot of money if you are planning on shopping your QB. You can’t win without a good QB. Stupid move.

  10. wgbronco says:

I agree with you Mike and al lthe posts that say they need to get together one on one and have a nice manly talk. The way I see it is Jay wants absolute fact he will never be traded. Coach McDaniels side is he can not guantee a trade ever, as all players are tradeable eventually, especillay if the management thinks it will make the team better. That my folks is the stand off. McDaniels fo rnow the Broncos want Jay as the QB, obviously, but in 5 to 7 years whose to know he may get traded. Jay wants to feel he is the guy til he decides to retire.

Both sides need to relax a little and lighten up on there stance. After all it is abusiness.

I cant wait to see the NEW Broncos this year, but I defenitaly want Jay running the “O”.

    GO BRONCOS 2009!!!

  11. My Blood Is Orange says:

ALL I KNOW IS THIS NEWS WHEN IT FIRST CAME OUT GAVE ME DIARREA I WAS SICK TO MY STOMACH AND I CAN ONLY HOPE THAT WE KEEP JAY. YES I’M A BRONCO FAN NOT JUST A CUTLER FAN BUT I WOULD HATE TO SEE OUR TEAM LOSE SOMEONE SO DYNAMIC PLUS I’M GOIN TO A GAME EARLY THIS SEASON AND WOULD LOVE TO WITNESS THIS GUNSLINGER LIVE. PEACE FROM THE EAST!

  12. milehighmagic88 says:

I tend to agree with the first part of rustycletis’ post. McDaniels is saying Cutler is the man, but I’m starting to think that’s all just a ruse to put off the inevitable which involves trading Cutler. I was shocked when I first heard the news of the possible trade and I was actually pretty irate initially. However, with the way Cutler continually asserts his desire to be traded, I don’t believe his heart can ever truly be in it again while in Denver. It’s sad for me to say this, but trading for a couple of pretty strong draft picks (say to the Lions, for instance), and then drafting a future franchise quarterback and a bunch of solid defensive players might be the way to go. With all of the free agent signings, the speculation that the draft will be heavily focused on D, and the drama on offense with Marshall and Cutler, I actually wouldn’t be surprised if this team became defense-oriented starting as soon as this year.

That may make for a mediocre season this year, but with continued growth on the defense and the development of a new young quarterback, this team has a chance to be very strong and very balanced in 2010. I probably sound totally off base to a lot of people here, but I can really see things going this way.

  13. 07elway says:

I totally agree with Rice on the time… they have plenty of it and I too hope they take complete advantage of it.

And I guess that’s why I’m not too worried about Jay… he will be back, I just know it. Like Rice said, the practices now are voluntary and are pretty much just for conditioning. He isn’t going to use his diabetes as an excuse, he’s too mature for that. He’s found a way to deal with it so that’s the last issue with him that’s on my mind… which is why I’ve never brought it up. I do expect him to be at the mandatory practices, if he doesn’t show then I pretty much will the know the answer to all this.

And ya know, if Jay is considering at all getting rid of Bus then he’s got the time to figure out a new agent, how to acquire them and make sure they’re not going to screw him over like this piece of work already has. He’s got time now he’s just got to use it wisely. I believe he will. I still find McD’s interview a little skeptical, I’m not crazy about the guy but I’m not going to abandon my team over all these changes and issues. I’m a Bronco fan first… and a very loyal one at that.

If Jay decides to stay (I hope he does and I think he will) he needs to know that his coach and other people will have his back… he’s got trust issues now and I certainly don’t blame him, so do I. Trust is something to be earned and only earned… and once its gone or faultered its hard to regain that trust. That’s exactly what happened here and I don’t have to know what went on in those meetings between coach & Jay to say that. If and when he comes back, those trust issues will work themselves out but with effort from all sides involved. I just hope he comes back, that’s all I care about right now out of this whole situation. He comes back and I’m a happy girl, very happy Bronco lovin’ girl!

    With faith…
    GO BRONCOS in ’09!!!!

  14. Thornyissue says:

Thanks for posting, Mike. I don’t think the interview said anything. The league REQUIRED McD to speak, and IMO he said nothing. At the moment, JC is “our” QB. Duh. I’d like to have heard, Jay is “my” QB, and “I” am excited about working with him. Oh well.
The thing that has amazed me about this situation is the character assassination going on by folks that know no more than you or I. Jay is “crying like a little girl”, McD is a liar and a tyrant, Bus Cook is in control of the whole situation. The only tantrums I’m seeing are from the press and fans who are excluded from the meetings. No leaks, anonymous sources, player opinions, “insider info”? That in itself speaks positive volumes, IMO.
Here’s my simple take. McD will do whatever he thinks will improve the team, period. His legacy will be measured in wins vs losses. If he can get by with a lesser talent at QB, and can trade for an improved overall effect, he’ll do it. JC is not a QB in the mold of Brady, or even Cassel, and is starting over in a new system. Except for the comradery and timing with existing receivers, his trade value might exceed his actual value to the new regime.
Jay, IMO, may be the best talent in the league. I’m not talking history here, folks. I’m talking talent. Forget won/loss, playoffs missed, ratings, TD/int ratios. If you watched last year, you saw his ability to sense pressure and move into and out of the pocket. He has an accurate and powerful arm. He is fiery and competitive, and smart. He reads defenses well, even when they are sitting on the pass. He leads on the field, and is a major contributor in the community. He is all you want in a franchise QB.
That said, Jay has reason to wonder if the changes will allow his career to progress. If he believes he has no support or trust here, requesting a trade is logical. His contract was negotiated with the folks that believed in him enough to trade up in the draft. They’d built a wonderful O-Line and a talented set of tools around him. With a restored running attack and a healed and improved defense, the sky was the limit. But, it became clear the new coach is so interested in placing his brand on the franchise that he’s willing to trade the centerpiece of the established one. And Jay, correctly, understands that he represents the Shanahan era, and is therefore more than expendable. No surprise he requested a trade rather than be led along. Sad, because he won’t find a better supporting cast, and he’ll have to establish relationships and timing with a new set of receivers. I haven’t heard him whine though. No interviews or contract demands. No public condemnation of the owner/coach. No defensive responses to Cooper, these boards, the quick-to-judge-without-facts media and public.
Bowlen? He had had enough of the almost good enough later years with Shanahan. Of course he’ll back whatever McD deems best for the system.
Bus Cook? He’s an agent. Quit giving him more influence than he actually has or deserves.
Elway? Sheesh, John! We love ya, but stop with the public comments until the concussion confusion clears a bit!

  15. dnvabroncomaniac says:

In my opinion of this whole Jay Cutler ordeal is that its just a way to get the Broncos into the national media spotlight.. If we do trade Jay then I guess that this was no publicity stunt and instead just a very bad decision on behalf of the coach and the rest of the organization. But to me this whole thing just looks like a stunt to get everyone’s attention on the Broncos and on Jay Cutler to make them popular by the time the 09 season starts it makes Jay Cutler look like a much better quaterback.

  16. Broncs55 says:

I had a thought cross my mind not too long ago. Josh McDaniels is a new coach.

Suppose a rival team (one that was trying to get a 3 way trade for Cutler in the beginning) approached this young coach and told him he could get his QB that he groomed last year from the Patriots in a 3 way deal that would let Cutler go.

Josh of course thought it through, and said no way! The team he told no to was furious, so they leaked out the possible trade to the media knowing how Cutler would take it.

The media sucked it up, and so did Cutler. Now Cutler over reacted as expected and demands a trade. Now that same team is in line for a 3 way trade if the Broncos decide to do so.

Perhaps it went down like this. Perhaps it was a set up. A setup to get Jay out of Denver and into a new organization.

  17. 47rocksurworld says:

McDaniels has done his part whether it is sincere or not, I am not sure, but does it really matter in the big scheme. Like it or not Jay Cutler, Josh McDaniels is your coach, you don’t have to like him but you need to respect him. For those of you that played in sports, you know what I mean. As a player I had coaches I could not stand, but I had to put up with them or not play, that made the choice real easy. I think I may understand where Cutler is coming from , but on the other hand I also thought the Bengals did the right thing with Chad Johnson. As a former Coach I can also understand where coach McDaniels is coming from too, if you let Cutler hold this team hostage you lose the control that you need, to run your team. As a coach you have to have command of your locker room and team, if you don’t your odds for sucess are nil. The coach has to get across to his players that the most important part on your jersey is the front not the back! How do you think Mike Shanahan would have handled this years ago, if you are not sure ask Eddie Kinnison about not obeying the coach, less than a week later you are in Kansas City! I have been guilty of blaming McDaniels for the majority of what has happened. While I still have my reservations, there is a knot in my stomach from the lack of respect for team mates and Mr. Bowlen that Jay Cutler appears to be showing now. As someone previously stated in these blogs “it is time to get off the bus” this is the last thing you want to have in common with Bret Favre. Favre was a damn good quarterback but the thing that took away from that was the drama that follows him. Cook the bus and show up to be with your team mates, be the leader they need not the distraction they don’t. It sure as hell beats playing for the Lions!!! Just look at the players that are on the offense, how many of your fellow Qb’s would love to have that kind of talent on their team!

  18. aSharpeIdea_84 says:

There are a lot of conspiracy theories circulating here. McD is lying in the interview, (maybe he was nervous?), it’s a set up to get Jay out of town, it was concocted to get Denver in the spotlight, and on and on.

Here’s what I think. Cutler is actually practicing in a controlled facility in Area 51 undergoing DNA altering experiments where they are mixing stem cells from Joe Montana and Bart Starr and will be injecting those into Jay’s brain. He needed to disappear for awhile to do this and so people now think he’s just laying low and getting out of the spotlight. Otherwise, there would be questions as to where he is.

If it works, they also had to have this story to explain away Jay’s incredible play next season as motivation to show McD up and prove he is better than Cassel and so people would not suspect the real reason which is his DNA has been altered and is now infused with Montana and Starr to form the worlds first S-U-P-E-R Quarterback.

OK, seriously people. There are no conspiracies going on, but you never really know right? It’s fun to speculate. But Mike Rice hit it on the head. We don’t really know and only time will tell.

Elway didn’t demand a trade when his name was thrown around, and Jay shouldn’t either. I understand his feelings, I don’t understand his actions.

Get your butt in here Jay, man up and lead YOUR team! The players want you, McD wants you, the FANS REALLY WANT YOU! Let’s everybody just spread the luv and get to work. Watch out AFC West!!

    NO TRADE NO WAY!!!

  19. U.P.Bronco says:

I have been a lifelong Bronco fan (as I’m sure most people on here have been). John Elway has always been and will always be my favorite player to ever have played in the NFL. From that stemmed my love for the quarterback position. The “general” of the offense the quarterback takes on a leadership role on the offense, touches the ball every play, and can make or break a drive with a single throw. He cannot do this alone of course and requires all the other players on the field (mainly the under-appreciated offensive line). Nevertheless, it is arguably the most important role on a football team’s roster. Since Elway’s retirement, we Bronco fans have watched two quarterbacks stuggle to escape his shadow only to fall short of the sun.

When Jay Cutler was first drafted i was a little angry over the vote of no-confidence in Jake Plummer after he had just led us to an AFC Championship. Jake along with the new pressure of a well sought after rookie quarterback waiting on the bench, was that second quarterback to fail to live up to Elway’s standards. When Jay became our starter we finally found a quarterback that could not only survive in Denver but also shine in Denver. I believe Cutler is a very good leader in the locker room and on the field. He led the second most productive offense in the league last season despite a poor defense and seven running backs being placed on the IR, and he broke several team records along the way. Granted he had an unbelievable supporting cast at every offensive position. He is the guy that i believe we need under center this year.

When this fiasco began i blamed McDaniels and still believe he started it. It was a rookie mistake as head coach and a wish to stay with a quarterback he was familiar with. I understand that Cutler was upset with this attempted trade, as was I, and felt that the new coach didn’t want him. Over the past few weeks I think they have shown him that they do indeed want him to be Denver’s quarterback. It has been Cutler’s turn to make a hasty naive decision by requesting to be traded over this without allowing for time to work things out. It has been a disheartening situation, handled poorly by McDaniels, Cutler, Mr. Bowlen, and most extremely the media, that has been blown completely out of proportion. It only saddens me that we may lose our star QB or that it may leave a rift in the needed Coach-Quarterback relationship. I hope they can figure something out and fix this problem, and I personally have decided to just give them the time to. I shall always remain a Broncos fan no matter how it turns out, but hope we don’t have to lose my current favorite player.

  20. U.P.Bronco says:

Also thank you Mr. Rice for post. It is nice to see someone finally acknowledge this whole situation on here, and especially in the well thought out and analyzed way you have.

  21. 2champ4pickSIX says:

Alirght first off I really like Cutler, and not just because my football babe is breathless over him! He is a great talented QB, he is mobile, he is accurate, strong armed, smart! I would say he needs to be more accurate because he trusts his arm too much at times, but like Rice said during the season, we really don’t know if on those throws the WR was suppose to zig and not zag!
That being said I really want him to stay here as a Bronco, not just in some luxory hotel for a week at a time when his new team comes to play! Really think with what McDenver has done with Cassell, who couldn’t win a starting job at USC from Lienhart during 3 years and obviously 1 from Palmer! But the point I’m trying to make is LIENHART!!! Drafted above Cutler, and Cassell couldn’t win a starting role over him in 3 year!?
To me that really shows what McDenver can do with a qb regardless of how accurate, strong armed, mobile, or smart he is! Cutler has all the talent, but really I don’t think Bates or Shanny can mold him into a S-U-P-E-R QUARTERBACK without altering DNA! McDenver I believe really can, and I think that Bowlen saw that in him, and realized he won’t ever have the best defense, he can improve it, but with the stars on offense the money isn’t there for defense. So he saw that improving Cutler who was phenomenal without those assets last year, was his best option over the next few years!
Really the price on Cutler if we did trade him would be a high 1st rounder, atlest what we used on him, a compensatory QB to fight with Simms, because neither will be franchise material, as well as a 2nd rounder! With everyone really trying to rebuild through the draft and get younger I don’t see a suitable partner, nor do I want to!
I also think that even in doing that, the problem would then be in the cap! High 1st rounders are expensive, and having two 2nd rounders will only add to what young studs we already have that will be needing new contracts in a few years!
We aren’t the Yankees, can’t afford everyone, so lets keep the great players we have!

    KEEP CUTLER!

  22. 2champ4pickSIX says:

Oh ya I wasn’t the one that said it but it could work if Cutler really doesn’t want to stay. Someone mentioned trading him to the Lions for their 1st overall pick, 2nd rounder, and 4th rounder!
Getting that much out of him would be valued at what we get with those picks, the poster went on to mention drafting Curry, who obviously would be a beast! Then trading our 2nd rounder and the Lions 2nd rounder to the Browns for Quinn.
I didn’t think it would be to bad since really meets the wants of both the Lions and Browns, a QB to the Lions, and draft picks to the Browns.
I personally think its a loss for us though, and if we do trade him like I said the price is high at 1st rounder 2nd rounder and a QB.
Like you said Rice we are all outsiders and it’s just our HIGHLY VALUED THOUGHTS! But only the Lions and Browns are teams drafting ahead of us that WANT AND NEED A QB! You could argue the Rams, but they need OL first! So if we have to part ways, I think those are the two eligible teams, question is what would we get in return!?
Funny how that same exact question (what would we get in return?) is what started this whole mess in the first place! LOL
football babe…… what do i get in return?? ;)

  23. Broncs55 says:

I would much rather find out a conspiracy took place from another team then to think of it as anything else. Perhaps the Patriots knowing they were to have a Super Bowl Caliber team was fearful of the Broncos having a shot as long as Cutler was on the Broncos squad in ’09, leaked out the trade talks to the media.

And perhaps if we put kryptonite in between Cutler and McD one of them will get terminally sick?

  24. iron-man says:

ohnistly, if jay cutlur is going to be a big babie about this, lets see how he would do on a differnt team. he is a good qb and he has done the job..ok. but we gave him the C for captain, he is not doing that verry well. so he doesnt like josh mcdaniolds. send in Dr. phill. we could eather trade him for another qb, or a draft in the top 10. it is better witthout a cry baby, and better with a leader.

  25. shannyfan says:

I disagree with some of the posters who dont buy what Mcdaniels had to say in his interviews. I think that McDaniels just seemed embarrassed more than anything about what has transpired. I think he came in with good intentions. When I first heard broncos had even considered trading jay for cassel. I was thinking to myself “man that is crazy, good thing that didn’t happen”. Then I never thought about it again that day. I wish Jay would have had the same thought process. Haha! I really hope they work it out though.

  26. pwsbronco says:

Totally agree with you 07, well stated. Remind me never to get into a catfight with you…. :-)

But come on is all this worth a QB who cant control his emotions. Dam T.O. is a Punk to but atleast he has balls. I bleed Orange and blue any day of the week, but i dont bleed for a QB who Dossent want to bleed for us. Josh McDanniels did his Job.. lets say the colts wanted to trade Manning for Cutler and there 1st round pick… do you think denver would have just hung up the phone right there or maybe thought the offer over. lets say Cuttler does stay a bronco you really think fans are going to cheer for him when the anounce his name? I’m Sorry dude. I know my views are different then your guys but thats my point, I will never look at him the same way as i did before…like Carolina and Peppers.

btw Kitna rateing with the lions was 80.9. and he threw for in 2007 4200 yards…how far did he go with the lions again! i rest my case… denver is better off with out him. we are better off with out him.
    Bronco4ever!

I hear your point BUT… at the end of the day it’s about winning, not whining.

Cutler gives the Broncos the best chance at winning in 2009, period. All the guys on NFL Network have him as a top 10 and maybe even a top 5 QB. You just DON’T trade a guy like that.

Yes, the fans will cheer LOUDLY for Cutler when he comes on the field. That’s what TRUE Broncos fans do. It’s called BRONCO NATION BABY!!!

    NO TRADE NO WAY!!!

  33. champ24thebeast says:

    Ya i get your point,
even that said, I am still going to cheer for cutler. i do like McKids personality a lil bit, but the thing i dont like is he came from the PATS. what did they do again…..? oh ya they are cheaters. i dont know if mckd is like that i hope not.
    BLEED ORANGE AND BLUE

  34. broncosforlife80 says:

Woody paige makes EXCELLENT points in his posts and videos. Just go check them out for yourself. The one big point he has made is even the greatest quarterbacks to have ever played the game when their defense gives up 30 or more points NONE of them have a winning record. Elway, brady, manning, montana, NONE! Also everybody has been saying “oh jay is just a baby and he needs to gorw up and reliaze its a business” but maybe you have forgotten about another Great bronco QB who did the same thing. Yeah, Elway did the same thing but when he did he hadn’t even started an NFL game yet he didnt want to nor would he play for the baltimore colts no matter what which is why he got shipped to Denver in the first place.Even John madden has publicly stated its the coachs problem and he needs to fix it. I know it sounds like im on jays side but im not im just stating points that were made that i thought were really good and CONVINCING. Ima Denver Broncos Fan forever no matter what happens here or there.

    GO BRONCOS!!!!!!

  35. 2champ4pickSIX says:

Alright to the monitors of the blog, what did I miss? You obviously deleted quite a few posts so what went on? Babe you alright???? Nevermind dumb question, you could take any of these punks in here!

Anyway to all of you like catfight, just do me a favor and first go watch this video:
    http://www.nfl.com/videos?videoId=09000d5d80f6e2c1

I want you to listen very carefully to how he says he would acquire Cutler in a trade from the Broncos FIRST! SECOND remember that he said he learned this all from Coach George Allen! THIRD remember that he said YOU LEAK IT TO THE PRESS THAT YOU ARE INTERESTED “LEGAL TAMPERING”!!!

The last thing I want all of you to do is watch this video:
    http://www.nfl.com/videos?videoId=09000d5d80f6e06a

Remember McDenver said he did not talk to Belichek about the trade or about Cassell, now if he was trying to get Cassell or trade Cutler wouldn’t that have gotten to Belichek, let alone their GM? Which both said they received no calls from Denver FIRST! Also remember that he said a 3rd party was trying to broker the deal SECOND! Finally remember that he doesn’t think its an ego, THIRD!
Back to what I said, I think bus the little scum wants more money, and all this is a way for him to get more, by getting Cutler more!

  36. 57Yellow T-Bird says:

    Guys:

Check out this video from Jay Glazer on foxsports posted on 3/25/09.
Sounds to me like Josh McDaniels and the Broncos organization really are on the level, and are really committed to Cutler.

    http://video.msn.com/?mkt=en-us&from=metadatawidget_en-us_foxpsorts_videocentral&vid=6bd2b5f1-7591-4a2d-b316-df3b1e9c5c64

I realize that the proof is in the pudding when it comes to actually making that commitment, but I think McDaniels is honest and on the level. I think Jay needs to get his butt in to Denver, sit down one-on-one with Josh, and listen to what he has to say. Then I think at sometime during that conversation, Brian Xanders and Pat Bowlen need to come in with a decent offer to renegotiate with Cutler. I think that would smooth over a whole bunch of this nonsense, and get Jay and Josh back on the same page.

    GO BRONCOS IN 09

  37. PatientBronco says:

Great article Mike. There is often so much that happens behind the scenes that we may never know what really happend and must wait for the situation to play itself out as we have no control over it, only how we act.
To all those who are sooo scared of losing Cutler. Remember how we looked last year, HORRIBLE. Right now Cutler is not the key to us winning more games. He was the focus of our team last year and we missed the playoffs, were embarrassed by the dolts, and lost to the Raiders at HOME. If we are to win more games this year and actually be more competative there are more important positions to fill. You can win more games with a lesser QB and better Def then the other way around. I think (as other posts above have allready stated) that this is why our new coach even looked at the trade offer. When a team is not very competative, improving the whole of the team is more important than any one player.
All we can hope for is that whoever plays for us this year plays competatively and gives us hope. After all its all about hoping for the big win at the end of the season (the one that involves a simple but oh so elegant looking trophy).

  38. Old fart says:

I hope Jay will come back this year and use it as an audition like year! Then we can see if maybe the couch and Jay can see they have the same goal for the team even if they don’t like each other. That would be the best out come for all the fans both Jays and the Broncos!!!

  39. shygalincali says:

All ican say is all this has really saddened me. I like jay and yes i think he shows some charecterisits of elway. I hope he doesnt go.

  40. 6-15OnlyWay says:

Hey real quick I just read a report from an ESPN analyst that said pretty much that the broncos have offered Cutler a contract extension..

Has anyone read anything else on it..

Here is the link.. Its under exec..
    http://myespn.go.com/blogs/afcwest/0-3-1862/How-to-solve-the-Cutler-mess.html

  41. monodono says:

6-15OnlyWay, I suggest you go back and reread that Blog it’s an interview of a former Exec….. and it was only suggestde the the Broncos brass offer a extention.
Oh and one more thing that was bill williamson at espn, He’s the the lead stooge for the afc west gossip colomn. unreliable. just call Mike Shanahan in KC and ask him, oh ya williamson was wrong about that too.

  42. MikeyD says:

    Hey Broncos Faithful,
I truly hope that this situation can be fixed. That said, Josh McDaniels is the coach and I believe he wants to win now. He comes from the most successful franchise of the past decade. That organization always put the team first and foremost above all individuals. Tom Brady bought into that philosophy and he will go down as one of the greatest quarterbacks ever. Coach McDaniels tutored Brady, and made a very competent quarterback out of Matt Cassel.
I think Jay Cutler has all the potential in the world. He has a great arm, can scramble and works very well with the young group of players around him. He does have flaws though. He has thrown too many interceptions, lost too many games (although the defence had a lot to do with that), and he has not played one play-off game yet. He should swallow his pride and realize that his situation in Denver looks pretty good (no matter how he feels about the coach).
    Go Broncos!

  43. 6-15OnlyWay says:

I read that article “And just for the record no where does it say a “former” exec.. So maybe you should reread it” Anyway I know the rep williamson has and that is why I asked if anyone else had heard anything on the matter.. Cause I think a deal like that would have been way bigger than a little blog.. Im sorry if you misunderstood me as how i wrote it could lead in a different way. I didnt mean that they had done it, just merely seeing what was up with the article because it was worded differently..

  44. charmon says:

Well, its looking like its a done deal. Jay is off to who knows where. Its my opinion that this deal will be to the detriment of both Cutler and our beloved team. I hope McDaniels proves to worth the cost thats been paid. Jay should have stepped up and proved his mettle but, any chance of truly being competitive this season will leave with Cutler. I don’t know what was said in the meetings, but both sides could have handled the situation better. The fact that the powers that be even entertained the original trade talks is beyond ridiculous though. Before that, we had a talented, young, pro bowl QB. Now, what are we going to be left with? A young and unproven coach? Draft picks that will more than likely be squandered by the same people that started this mess in the first place? I hope when the dust settles, our boys can compete. Jay will be missed, but i still bleed orange and blue.

  45. monodono says:

6-15OnlyWay, your right for the record no where does it say a “former” exec.. Sorry. I did misread the first paragraph and thought it said Former. Sorry.
Your post just startled me, because there is no way Cutler deserves more than the 48 Million dollar 6yr. contract He has currently committed to.

    TIME OF POSSESSION ! ! !

    GO BRONCOS ! ! !

  46. funnycar says:

Way to go McD! Your first order of business is to diss and piss off the FRANCHISE quarterback. NO team goes to the SuperBowl without one. Good luck finding another one. Cutler will love Minnesota. Broncos win 2 games this season, max. The fans will boo you mercilessly.

  47. charmon says:

Better Orton, than Brady Quin! This could work in our favor if the picks are used wisely. We’ll see!

I don’t see the defense really improving until next season at any rate. I hope McD can get a running game going, we are going to need it!

  48. catfight619 says:

Well McD you better be worth all trouble!!!! God i hope !!!!!

  49. monodono says:

Mr. Rice, please read this article.

    http://fifthdown.blogs.nytimes.com/2009/04/03/stefan-fatsis-on-jay-cutler/

    Truely enlightening stuff.
