There’s Nothing Like A Win

The Broncos can exhale again. A win enables a team to do that.

Shaking off their three-game losing streak, the Broncos flat-out got it done Sunday night against the Steelers.

It wasn’t a work of art by any means, but it was a win. And that is exactly what the Broncos needed.

Let me summarize all the qualifiers by simply saying the Broncos still have work to do. They still need to improve. But the fact is they played well enough to beat a very good Pittsburgh team.

More than anything, the Broncos played with passion. From their first drive when they answered Pittsburgh’s touchdown with one of their own, the Broncos showed life and energy and toughness that seemed to lack during the three-game losing streak.

Hats off to the Broncos defense. That unit made adjustments during the bye week and it showed.

The Broncos’ eight-man front seemed to be effective. They forced three turnovers, sacked Ben Roethlisberger four times and scored a touchdown. In addition, the Broncos held the vaunted Steelers’ rushing attack to 119 yards. And let’s not forget Champ Bailey didn’t even play.

On offense, touchdowns were the order of the evening in the red zone. That was a big-time step forward. Instead of settling for field goals, the Broncos kept the pressure on the Steelers all night by getting into the end zone.

And how impressive was Jay Cutler in the clutch again? When Denver had to have a drive at the end of the game, he delivered. I know, he’s still young, still learning and at times makes mistake but Cutler embraces the crucial moments and has shown an incredible ability to make plays with the game on the line. That is something you can’t teach.

The Broncos gave people reason to feel better. Now we’ll see if they can keep it up against the Packers.

What pleased you most about the Broncos win? I’d love to get your thoughts.

Thanks for reading!

Best,
Mike

I knew that the Broncos were going to come back and play hard after their bye week and the embarrassing loss to the Chargers two weeks ago. I’m especially glad that they proved everyone wrong who said Denver’s rush defense didn’t stand a chance against Pittsburgh’s running attack.

I’m proud of Cutler who had three touchdowns! It was also interesting to how much coaching experience can make a difference when watch a veteran and rookie head coach make those final calls in the last two minutes. We love Mike Shanahan, and of course, Jason Elam.

Ok, all you nay sayers… what do you have to say about last night, huh? Please don’t answer that. I knew this whole time that my beloved Broncos would make an awesome comeback and I absolutely love JAY CUTLER!!! That kid was phenomenal last night… and that run he did and two plays later we got another TD, what a QB. I love him.

You could tell John Lynch was wanting to win real bad and that penalty call on him for a personal foul — absolutely stupid. That was a dumb call but I won’t let it overshadow our win. I would have to say although I wish Bailey played our defense did exceptionally well. Forget the 28 points… Pittsburgh did the same only they let us have 31, haha. And the way the attacked Benny Roethlisbooger, I was having the time of my life watching him put up with all of it. I could sit here & highlight this entire game but the whole game was just what I expected and like Lynch said right after, we can only get better. That’s exactly what we need to do and should do. We killed them in the 1st half… loved every minute of it and I really love that even though they scored 28 pts, we stayed ahead the whole time till the 4th quarter. That’s the football team I’ve been looking for, that’s the Denver Broncos football team I know. Bring it up a couple more notches for Monday Night next week and beat those sticky cheesehead Packers. I’ll love you even more. Fantastic game, Phenomenal QB (take that LPP, wherever you are) and great defense.

    Forever and always: GO BRONCOS!!!!!!!

    Mike,

The Broncos win was great! Madden and Michaels didn’t give any update on Scheffler or why Selvin Young was carrying the ball with 15 seconds remaining. Do you have an update on injuries to Scheffler and Henry?

    Thanks Mike!

Yes, I love a win, but frankly, it was more a relieved feeling than an excited feeling. Remember, we were up two touchdowns at the half, and had both those eaten up in the second half with no answers.

What really frustrates me is when the play calling includes two busted runs before it even lets cutler handle the ball. That’s asking for trouble on third down. Yes, culter can come through, but I’ll take a 10+ yard advance on first or second any time over third. Let the runners finish up the 10 yards that a throw didn’t quite cover and I’ll be a much happier fan.

Defense looked alot better, but they got tired towards the end, OT would’ve been ugly. Good work guys, lets keep working on it though.

    Agree w/ gmittar about the run-run (reverse?) then 3rd & 10/15/20.

The 1st half was awesome then it seemed the D went back to last 3 game strategy (keep attacking Please!).

Players stepped up. Elvis was in the house & shouldv’e been on the horse trailer. Foxworth, Kuper, Meyers, Bly, Scheffler, Williams, Stokley, Cutler=great game! D-line looks like it’s coming together. Still need speed @ safey where we were beat for most of yards against us & TD’s.

Great HITTING!-Think Jamie Winborns hit on ST’s got team fired up. Selvin on returns put the special in ST’s.

What more can be said about Elam?=HOF!

Bring in the All time leader in interceptions w/ Bly, Bailey, Foxworth & Dumervil! Can’t wait!
    Slay Green Bay!
    GO Bronco-Rockies!

Who would of thunk it, the Bills - the Faders and now the Steelers going down on Jason’s kicks in almost the same way, the Broncos should not have let them come back like that, it seems like they can’t put the nail in the coffin once they are up big on the score board. Just once I would like not have have an ending in a game that doesen’t cause me to have hot sweets and a damn near a hart attak. I love my Broncos but i wish they would stop trying to give game away like that. They need a killer’s touch. GO BRONCOS, we need you to open up a can of ASS WHOOPIN on Monday night on Bret and the Peckers

The blitz is back! In 2005 the Broncos blitzed and went to the afc championship game.In 2006 the blitz was gone and we saw what the out come was beside Plummer’s int’s.What a welcome site it was too see the blitz again and the pressure it put on the quarterback. If the Broncos “D” can keep that going, great things will happen. One last note,San Diego is in a state of emergency with the fires,Bronco Country keep us in your thoughts.

To all those who bemoaned the “stagnating Denver performance” these past few weeks and predicted a failure of a season, I repeat my earlier comments by saying “Eat my helmet.” I could see our determination for a win in every play of the game, a victory well-earned indeed (dude, Pittsburgh might just as well have not even bothered showing up for that first half, talk about lethargic!). My hat goes off to Cutler, who showcased a dazzling display of confidence, coordination, and all-out spunk! If we can keep this energy going for the next game, the old cheese-heads don’t stand a chance! GO DENVER!!!!!!

  10. Climber_651 Says:

What I thought of the game:

    > It is a win.

    > Even if they hadn’t won, I would have felt OK about it since they obviously played hard the whole game. They really seemed to get their heart back.

  11. bronco_hyde Says:

I had nothing but confidence in this team. I put Cutler, Scheffler, and Dumerville in on my Fantasy team, and boy did they pay off!

My favorite part of the game . . . . 3 red zone trips, 3 touchdowns. Also, how many 3rd and 14’s did we have?? And finally, 3 turnovers!!!!
I’ll say it again, I love Martinez. Marshall didn’t have a great game, although he had a couple of big first downs. It’s nice to know we have depth (martinez and clark) that can also make the plays when needed.

As far as the Packers . . . they haven’t had a decent running game all year long, so lets keep the blitzes coming to get some pressure. Favre isn’t as mobile as Benny Boy, so I’m seeing 2 sacks a piece for Dumerville, Moss, Crowder, Lynch, and another couple to boot. That’s right, 10 sacks. By the 2nd half we’ll be up by 20, and all the catch up passing is gonna mean interceptions for Bly and Baily (if he plays) or Foxworth.

I’m glad to see the first back in Denver and hope this keeps up.

Screw the naysayers. It’s interesting to see that they have nothing to say now. This was the real version of the Broncos. As the season progresses to the halfway point, the Broncos are beginning to gel and get into position for what can still be a really successful season. It would be nice to have a blowout but the point is we’re beginning to win again, and I’d much rather be 3-3 than 2-4. I marvel that the Chiefs are beginning to pop off in the media, claiming that they’re the class of the division. Memo to myopic Chief fan: the division race is between us and the Chargers. So you beat the Raiders to take a brief divison lead. Big whoop? Who in the division can’t beat Oakland? In any case, we’ll continue our magnificence next week against the Packers. Go Rockies as well!!!

  15. vraptor567 Says:

Jay certainly showed his stuff and this is his first full season it’s only going to get better from here. The D did a good job in the face of big Ben showing they can get the job done. The run did not carry the game so I was glad to see Jay having a chance at showing off that arm. It was also good to see actual TD’s running up the score instead of just FG, but glad to see Elam put the game away with his only shot on the field. It was a good night to be a BRONCO fan, barely noticed the cold. GO BRONCOS

  16. broncogram65 Says:

I believe the Bronco’s have their smile back. Winning gave them hope. It needs to stay and do well against the Packers!! Hope is a good word. If any of you believe in PRAYER, now is the time! There are several christian boys on the team and I believe there are many christian fans! Great game!! Let’s do it again!

  17. broncogram65 Says:

Brianbronco, go home, can’t understand a thing you are saying!! Not nice. The Bronco’s rule, Steelers drool and hopefull the Packeres go home defeated!

  18. Broncocane Says:

All I can say after witnessing that game is THANK YOU to all of the Broncos players, fans and staff. I am from Virginia and was visiting my brother-in-law who is a pure bread Steeler fan and I had to endure a 40 minute bus ride with him and 50 other Steeler fans to the game. All I can say is it was a quiet ride home.

I am a die hard Bronco fan and I must say I have never not loved an ARM like this in nearly 10 years now. Cutler has earned my respect from day one and I cant wait for and hope to hear his name mentioned in the same breath as Tom Brady and Peyton Manning in a year or two. He had many great throws but my favorite play of the game was when the steelers had so much respect for his arm that they entire team bit on his pump fake, sprinted deep and left 31 yards of wide open turf in front of him. Awsome play and an excellent decision by our young 11 game quarterback.

As for the rest of the game, at the end of the 1st half I was infuriating my brother by screaming at Big Ben to just take a knee and that was before the sack and fumble return. My final act of silent trash talking was when I handed him his back pack and asked if he was ready to go when Elam was lining up to kick the field goal. Great stuff…

The game was great, the team played great and found a way to win and thanks again to everyone involved for giving me a reason to smile amongst all those angry Steeler fans…Believe me I had heard so much trash in the two weeks leading up to and just before the game that I had just had it. Way to go Broncos….
