Mark of Excellence

OK, parents.  This is where you get to chime in with some real world advice for us mascots.

A friend of mine was at an appearance, and was signing t-shirts, when a kid comes up with a short sleeve polo shirt on.  This friend of mine decided he didn’t want to ruin the shirt (the t-shirts the others were wearing were from a camp, so it’s a safe bet that no one will have a problem with a signature on those) but he also didn’t want the kid walking away empty-handed.  So in a split-second decision, he signed the kid’s forehead.

And winning by a nose…

So what’s your guess for the Derby tomorrow?   I’m not a gambler by nature, and I know nothing about horse racing (kinda why I took this job — more glamour, less whipping) so I usually go by either what name I like the best, the biggest underdog (horse) or what jockey has the coolest name/silks.  Here’s my thoughts:

In the first round of the mascot draft the Pittsburgh Steelers select…

…Purdue Pete!

Not a bad selection, but it might be a hard transition from the college mascot game to the pros.  I don’t know if it’s ever been done before.

Steelers Mascot

I hope they don’t think that a five o’clock shadow and a prop change can fool us. I mean, he isn’t Superman here.  We’re not willing to suspend our disbelief and say a pair of glasses has got us snowed.

He apparently doesn’t have a name yet.  But as soon as he does, I’m sure me and the rest of the mascot community will officially welcome him into the fold.  Now that, of course, includes some heavy hazing and a background check.  This is where we find out if his last name is Pete.  Stay tuned sports fans, Miles is on the case!*

* Of course, this means absolutely nothing. Most likely I will forget all about this, and you’ll never hear about it again.

Fridays with Johnny

Not to be confused with the smash hit book, or the after school special-ish Tuesdays with Morrie, last Friday I spent most of the day with John Lynch (Don’t call him Johnny — it just made sense for the title). We made visits to three elementary schools along with the Western Dairy Council to promote healthy and nutritious eating.

Hello, Interweb!

That’s right, as the most technologically advanced horse around (take that, Trojans) I’m the first NFL mascot to blog.

Really though, when they told me I needed to blog, i thought it was some college party trick or rite of passage.  When I found out all I had to do was type what was in my head, I thought, “*tumbleweed*.” Then I thought, “I can do that!”

Well, months later after extensive training — and many failed HTML classes — I’m now a proud member of the blogosphere! (How am i doing with the nerd jargon?)
