How ‘Bout Them Broncos?

November 20th, 2007 - 12:16pm by MilesOther posts by

I had a great day yesterday.  I don’t know about you guys, but that’s what the season is all about.  It actually started on Sunday night when I was kind of a co-host for Raw Sports on Fox Sports Net Rocky Mountain.  I got to kick it with Oren and Ryan and the rest of the staff.  I had a great time and I think they did too.

Then comes Monday.  We were giving our shirts, and beanies, and wiggle sticks.  There were spotlights and paratroopers and flames and, of course, ME!  That’s the way a Monday night game should go.  Everyone was pumped up and loud.  People were cheering the whole game.  Dare I say that was the epitome of a Denver Broncos home win!

After we scored the first touchdown I crowd surfed in the southeast stands and I’ve never made it up the crowd so fast.  You could tell people were just pumped.  The team just kept plugging away, scoring points and getting stops.

So let’s all be thankful for a great win.  Don’t forget to be thankful for your family and friends this week, and let’s carry this momentum into Chicago so we can come out of there with a win and be doubly thankful!

Gone but Not Forgotten

November 12th, 2007 - 12:02pm by MilesOther posts by

So it might seem that after that Green Bay game that I have gone into hiding.  Not the case.  Actually I’ve been pretty busy with appearances.  Last weekend I went up to the Minnesota Vikings game to do their mascot halftime game.  So I was there to witness two NFL records.  Adrian Peterson rushing for 296 yards and Antonio Cromartie returning a field goal for 109 yards.  Now our game wasn’t that exciting.  I played outside linebacker on defense and racked up two tackles for losses and was in on a couple others.  On offense I played center, and am happy to report no botched exchanges.  The kids won (it seems like they always do) but as always, it was fun.

An Emotional Game, but a Tough Loss

October 24th, 2007 - 5:02pm by MilesOther posts by

We fought hard, and gave our all, but in the end it wasn’t enough.  The kids from the Boys and Girls Club were a worthy opponent, and we were up to the challenge.  I believe if we had more time, we would be victorious.

It was nice to hear people cheer for Dinger.  I don’t think Dinger gets enough love.  The whole state LOVES Rocky, and for good reason, and I don’t think I’ve ever been in another venue and not get love from the fans, but Dinger usually is greeted with crickets, or even sometimes some boos.  But Sunday when he was announced, the stands exploded.  Finally!  Of course all of us here are wishing the Rockies and Dinger good luck.

Now, the game.  I don’t think people realize how slippery these little kids can be.  Twice I had the ball carrier all but wrapped up and just like that, he’s gone.  I don’t know if they grease ‘em down or what, but there is a clear advantage to being small.  They can change direction so quick and are hard to grab onto.  But on our end, there’s an advantage to being big.  First of all, it takes about half a dozen of them to bring us down.  Second, they are short and easy to hurdle.

Take Up Your Arms!

October 11th, 2007 - 10:30am by MilesOther posts by

So Monday we picked up our deflated egos and hauled them to Rifle.  Here, the Broncos faithful restored them with hearty handshakes, gleaming smiles and enthusiasm for the team that lost 41-3 the day before.

I really was not very excited to make the trip after what happened on Sunday.  I figured the few people that did show up would just want to talk about how horribly the team played.  You know what?  About 600 people showed up and I’m not lying when I tell you that not one, NOT ONE person mentioned the game.  They were just happy to get to see everyone and cheered us on for the next game.

Man, I wish we could play the next game in Rifle, because I’m a little dissappointed how quickly people throw in the towel.  I understand being frustrated, believe me I know, but when I looked up to an empty crowd before the beginning of the fourth quarter last week … I was speechless (pun intended).  How do such rabid fans that describe themselves as die-hards just pack up and leave?

The Nacho Cheese Incident

September 21st, 2007 - 11:37am by MilesOther posts by

Sunday. Denver, Colorado. Invesco Field.

It’s the third quarter and I just got done doing a Thundervision promotion in the 500′s.  After the promo, there were a lot of people that wanted pictures and autographs, so I hung around for about 20 minutes.  We had to jet because I’m a very busy horse and I have places to be, so we’re booking down the concourse and out of no where, “BAM!” and all of the sudden it’s raining nacho chips.

I look around and I see a lady, arms positioned like she’s carrying a box of air, with a look on her face like I just chucked her first born over the side of the stadium.  I quickly put it all together and I didn’t really know what to do.  I was in a rush to get back to the field, but I couldn’t just walk away from this.  Luckily we were right by a concession stand so I cut the line (sorry folks, it was an emergency) and got her another nachos.  It wasn’t until later that I realized I had nacho cheese all up and down my arm.  So, whoever you are, I hope you enjoyed your nachos, and I apologize for spilling them, but you don’t want to get in the way of a horse that’s late.

On another note, If you have HBO you should check out Inside the NFL, your boy kicks off the Broncos/Raiders package with a nice long slomo.  It’s pretty sweet if I do say so myself.  It’s goes off at about the 1/2 hour mark for you TIVO people.

Should I Call Frank Azar?

August 7th, 2007 - 4:51pm by MilesOther posts by

If I’m the Mariner Moose, that’s probably my first call.  I’m sure you know that I’m referring to his little “accident” involving a four-wheeler and the body of some baseball player from some team.  Apparently the player is somebody, and the team he plays for is one people really follow or something.  All I know is it involves chocolate cereal and some foot-warmers.

Now, I’ve seen the video and I’m sure you’re all waiting for me to weigh in on this.  Of course I’m going to back my furry brethren on this one.  But you also have to look at it from our perspective.

Road Trip!

July 16th, 2007 - 5:05pm by MilesOther posts by

That’s right, suckers!  I’m packing up the Miles Mobile and heading north!

This Saturday me and a few of my close friends are heading up to the Cheyenne Frontier Days.  We’ll be wandering around from 11am-3pm doing our thing.  In case you didn’t know, “our thing” is signing autographs, taking pictures and generally being awesome.  In case you didn’t know, “We” is are Randy Gradishar and Karl Mecklenburg along with about six cheerleaders.

A Modest Proposal…or Response…or Whatever

June 21st, 2007 - 11:56am by MilesOther posts by

I was originally going to right an outrageous response to a blog entry that many of you may have read.  You can find the entire entry HERE.  If you don’t want to read the whole thing, basically the guy doesn’t like mascots.  Now, the guy puts a disclaimer at the top saying he’s a huge Broncos fan and that sometimes you just need to complain.  Duly noted.  I’m not saying it didn’t ruffle my feathers and I understand that some people just don’t like mascots.  So I was going to tear this guy apart (in a funny way) and maybe create a dialogue between us that people would find entertaining, but I decided that maybe he had some valid questions.  So I decided I would answer them.  Well, mainly this one:

“Why do we need this?

Is this a ploy to increase sales of mascot-related merchandise? Because I can’t see any respectable parent buying the hard back book “Mile’s Grand Adventure: a chronicle of Mile’s A-to-Z journey around the state of Colorado,” or a serious golfer shelling out $33 for headcovers in the shape of Mile’s head?”

Fan Fairiffic!

June 7th, 2007 - 4:54pm by MilesOther posts by

I know Andrew Mason already covered Fan Fair, but he didn’t spend most of the time taking pictures with fans and playing mascot football.  Fan Fair is quite the event.  It’s rare throughout the league that EVERY player and EVERY coach is available to the fans for at least a little bit over the course of two days.  Over those two days we had about 14,000 fans in the building.  Some of the lines were long, but I think most people were pleased.  A lot of people that come every year may notice the lines getting longer, but there’s nothing that can be done about that.  There are a limited number of players and coaches, and the attendance keeps going up.  Basically we are a victim of our own popularity.  Not a bad spot to be in though.  Anyways, lets get down to the nitty gritty.  Or as my grandma says the knitty gritty.

Saturday I spent most of the day signing autographs.  The first time I attempted to make about a 1/4 lap around the concourse.  I had an hour to do it (I’m a mascot, not Hidalgo-I need a break).  After about 45 mins,  I had gone approximately 20 yards.  As soon and people saw me, it was on.  Pictures, signing shirts, balls, trading cards, magazines, programs-I even signed a forehead.  I tell you, I love Broncos fans because they are so passionate, but at one point I got a little spooked.  I was surrounded on all sides with shirts, balls, programs jammed in my face.  I did my best to sign everything I could, but the reality is, there is no way I could ever sign everything.  Which means there are people that were waiting for my autograph that didn’t get it.  This really bothers me.  I REALLY try to make sure everyone is happy, and knowing that I wasn’t able to get to everyone gets to me.  So if you didn’t get an autograph, I apologize.  Heck, send me a letter and I’ll send you an autograph.

Hip Hop and You Don’t Stop!

May 23rd, 2007 - 5:14pm by MilesOther posts by

Last Saturday I had the pleasure of taking part in Mile High Youth Productions’ Spring into Summer Youth Festival held at Devner Skate Park.  Basically it was a festival of information for kids on what things are going on in the Denver area this summer.  Everyone from the Salvation Army to the TS Skate shop were there.

It wasn’t just booths filled with pamphlets about reading programs at your local library.  There were a lot of cool things going on.  They tried to expand kids’ ideas of what’s available to them for summer activities.  If you like cars, they had classic cars on display, and people that offer internships at auto shops.  They had information on summer skateboarding camps while a couple skate teams put on demos.  They had dance troupes doing exhibitions — everything from traditional Aztec dances to traditional Mexican dances.
