Myers Sent to Houston for Sixth-Rounder

Offensive lineman Chris Myers is on his way to Houston.
After three years in Denver, including one as a starter at guard and center, the Broncos sent Myers to the Houston Texans in exchange for a sixth-round selection in next month’s draft.
A sixth-round pick in 2005 is what the Broncos used to originally procure Myers after a four-year career at the University of Miami in which he played various positions along the Hurricanes’ offensive line.
According to various media reports, Myers, a restricted free agent, met with the Texans last week. Had Houston signed him and the Broncos declined to match the offer, the Broncos would have received a sixth-round pick as compensation.
Myers started at center in the season’s final 11 games after Tom Nalen succumbed to injury, but Nalen is expected to return, as is Ben Hamilton, whose left guard slot Myers assumed after concussions consigned the eight-year veteran to the sidelines in the preseason. When Myers moved to center upon Nalen’s injury, Chris Kuper received the call at left guard.
Dealing Myers gives the Broncos a projected nine selections in the upcoming draft, and gets the Broncos back into the sixth-round. Denver sent its pick in that round to the St. Louis Rams last June in exchange for defensive tackle Jimmy Kennedy.
The Broncos now have their first-rounder, their second-rounder, two fourth-rounders, two fifth-rounders, the Texans’ sixth-round selection and a pair of seventh-round picks.

You know I liked the capability of Myers to play so many positions but with depth being our greatest problem this may work out okay.
March 17th, 2008 at 2:16 pm
Sorry, French Fries, you lost me. How does it follow that losing a versatile player helps with depth when Myers was a starter at two positions?
March 17th, 2008 at 2:17 pm
I’m sad to see Meyers go…I thought he played well this year. Also I thought he would replace Tom Nalen after he retired. However he was a backup and he can be replaced.
March 17th, 2008 at 2:18 pm
I like getting extra picks, but I really don’t understand giving up a young, versatile o-lineman who has 3 years in the organization. Unless there was some trouble behind the scenes, I can’t understand this move at all…..
March 17th, 2008 at 2:29 pm
Trading away Nalen’s successor isn’t a good move. I hope this somehow works out, a 6th round pick? Let’s hope there’s a steal in this upcoming draft, or this is just bollocks.
March 17th, 2008 at 2:41 pm
There’s just so much about this I don’t understand. First of all, why we would let this happen is beyond me. This is a lot of faith to show in an aging, recently injury-prone interior line. Anyone want to lay odds on a 36 year old center coming off a season-ending injury making it through a whole season without missing any time? Secondly why did we bother making this a trade? It sounds like it would have gone down exactly the same way if the Texans had just signed him to an offer sheet. It just seems weird. I absolutely hate this move, hate it with a fiery passion. It’s not like we entered this offseason without a ton of personnel needs, and it seems like all we’ve done is create more holes while signing underacheivers and practice-squad caliber bums to “fill” the old holes. We better have the BEST draft ever if we want to be competitive in the next few seasons. Look here comes Keary Colbert and Marlon McCree to save the day… Yeesh. BOOOOO, front office, BOOOOO!
March 17th, 2008 at 2:59 pm
Get rid of Shanahan please!!!!!!!!!
March 17th, 2008 at 3:18 pm
Why would we trade a versatile player and someone that knows the system and familiar with Cutler? Im not sure if this makes sense especially with Nalen at the end of his career. Who is the backup? I understand this gives us another pick but we still need to rebuild and get young with experience on the line. Letting this young guy go is crazy too me. Its apparant we are building thru the draft now. I just hope Shanny knows what he is doing.
I kinda like some of the moves made in the offseason so far by not overpaying too much for free agents but I was hoping we could have picked up the DT from the Jets but the deal fell thru last week. This way we could have focused on the oline with the 1st pick a 2nd WR etc.
March 17th, 2008 at 3:19 pm
Yo Dave, we also signed Boss to fill our the OLB problem, a new d coordinator will help D.J. shine in the middle. Cutler had a good year with only Marshall, Stokley, and Scheffler to pass to. Nalen is an iron man and although this mat be his last year, having extra draft picks helps, especially on draft day when you want to trade up. I agree that Lynch and McCree will not be good enough and especially not fast enough to hold down the secondary but that is why we have transistion years. Unfortunatley, Cutler’s supporting cast will be the reason that he will not get the credit he deserves as a top QB in the league.
March 17th, 2008 at 3:20 pm
i dont believe this is the smartest move.
Myers is worth way more than a sixth round.
We better have a bomb draft.
March 17th, 2008 at 3:20 pm
I REALLY do not like this. One of our big focuses this off season was to be the o-line, so how does this make sense? Instead of adding depth up front, we trade the most capable YOUNG lineman for a sixth round pick. SIXTH! Gems that late are there, but they are not commonplace. They think that because we got lucky in the late rounds a couple of times that gives management the leeway to trade away our future. I am VERY disappointed by this move. Hopefully it will all work out come draft day.
March 17th, 2008 at 3:23 pm
Myers, a fourth-year player, was a restricted free agent who signed a contract with the Broncos to facilitate the trade. Myers signed a four-year, $11 million contract that includes a $3 million signing bonus, reports NFL Network’s Adam Schefter.
We should have matched that offer and Myers is good enough for at least a 4th round pick. Kubiack got a steal and we are left with a pick that really does not matter. Myers is well worth that considering we have gromed him for 3 years and he was set to replace Nalen. This was just another horrible move by Shanny.
March 17th, 2008 at 3:25 pm
broncoproit6
DJ is moving back to the outside, Niko or someone else will be in the middle
and marlon McCree will make a big difference at safety
March 17th, 2008 at 3:27 pm
First of all there is alot of loyalty amongst some coaches and I think especially with Kubes and Shanny, why would one do the other wrong. Believe me I don’t like it because for me its what is best for the BRONCOS but it happens. Seccond, I smell something brewing with I hate to say it because I don’t want him to go but Foxworth and Julius Peppers. Whenever I have heard about athletes coming into town and watching a Nuggets game that usually means one thing…. Thirdly, with all those extra picks, I could see us giving alot of those away to Miami….maybe I’m just dreaming big and I’m hoping not, but Parcells was brought into build that team with some young fresh talent and I don’t think he wants to spend all of his money on the first of the first rounders, so why not? Fourth and final thought, stop bagging on Shanny for crying out loud, I think might have sent somebody packing lately that might have been some of our problem….Lets sit back and let some of these pan out.
GO BRONCOS!!!!!
March 17th, 2008 at 3:34 pm
I dont really mind this move because Mark Fenton and Chris Kuper are versitile enough to play almost all the O-line Positions.
To Griff75: Denver Right now has an agreement with the Jets to exchange D-Rob and the Jets fourth round pick for our fourth round pick and a conditional pick in next years draft. D-Rob should be ours if we can work out a contract with him
Also lets not forget that we run a ZONE blocking scheme. The scheme is not really that hard to grasp for young players. So to all of you who hate this move and who hate Shanahan…just have faith. Shanahan pretty much did the same thing before the 1997 season and look how that all turned out
March 17th, 2008 at 3:39 pm
I don’t hate the move, would have liked to try and steal a 5th rounder, but at least we got something. I think the Texans may have overpaid a bit… Myers is physical and I like his toughness, but he would often get dominated by the bigger DT’s.
This tells us is that the Broncos are going to target OL in the draft, early and often IMO… Just like DE last year, and CB 3 years ago.
March 17th, 2008 at 3:42 pm
if anything, cutler is better than carr, testaverde and whoever else colbert had throwing the ball to him. His arm and accuracy are way better than delhomme, so give the guy a chance.
March 17th, 2008 at 3:43 pm
Dr Doom. Thanks for the information. I hope this happens.
March 17th, 2008 at 3:47 pm
To crazybroncosfan. Can Colbert stretch the field with his speed? For what I was told he is not a burner. I hope we can draft a really fast WR with hands and size to stretch the field. This will open up underneath routes and get the TE more involved in the passing game (assuming the oline can hold their own and the run can be effective).
March 17th, 2008 at 3:50 pm
darrell jackson was released by the niners, he could be a good pick up too
March 17th, 2008 at 3:53 pm
This is just awful. The likelihood of finding a suitable starter at guard/center in the sixth round is next to nil. However, I will reserve judgment until after the draft,
March 17th, 2008 at 3:59 pm
Profit6 - I include Boss under the heading of underacheiver. Yes, it’s nice to have extra draft picks, but when you’re going to have to replace your Center AND a Guard in the next season or two, don’t you think that a guy who has shown the ability to play effectively at both positions might have a little more value than 6th round pick? Transition, rebuilding, whatever you want to call it does NOT work if you let your young, good players go for next to nothing.
Meisner - McCree was a barely adequate safety with the Chargers’ front 7 out there making his job easier, I’m not expecting adequacy from him in a much weaker defense.
Myles - If Shanahan let Myers go out of some sense of loyalty to Kubiak, he should probably be fired right now. His job is to make this team better, not to make the Texans better. Conveniently, I don’t think that’s why he let Myers go, so I’m not advocating his firing.
crazybroncosfan - Yes, Colbert is very talented, and maybe coming into a better QB situation will allow him to realize his potential. But here’s some numbers: 62 receptions 670 yards and two touchdowns. Reasonable numbers for a 3rd option for a season… Unfortunately, that is the total of his last *3* seasons. The guy had a very respectable rookie season and has proceeded to fall off the map entirely, even with Steve Smith commanding a double team on every play on the other side of the field. Sorry if I’m not willing to buy that a change of scenery is all it will take to get him back on track.
March 17th, 2008 at 4:08 pm
This move is another step Shanny seems to be taking in destroying his legacy and hold onto GM duties. Meyers wasn’t a GREAT player by any means, but it was also his FIRST season playing the position. I feel this is about as dumb a move as we’ve made in recent seasons and it solidifies the idea that Shanny is COUNTING on having Clady fall to him in the first round. I find this move insulting to the rest of us and a set back to the team. Hamilton better be 100%!
March 17th, 2008 at 4:15 pm
i think that we need to get Rosevelt colvin in fa and put him on the edge!! he is still pretty damn good….i like that we traded myers..we made him into a good player…..we need to bring Greg Elsinger back to denver..we drafted him a couple of years ago….a former outland trophy winner and the # center in the NFL Europa….if not him then fenton..but i think elsinger with time could be a bigger version of tom nalen.
March 17th, 2008 at 4:18 pm
did you hear that al wilson is visting the browns…….dang watch him make probowl……wow!!!! and now that we lost our center maybe we can go get justin Hardwick from SD…he is strong and huge and mean…plus he can tell us how SD runs there plays!
March 17th, 2008 at 4:32 pm
Everybody relax about Colbert, Meyers, and McCree. There are two reasons why colbert should do a lot better here in Denver:
1)Colbert is a good deep threat…He doesent have great speed but he knows how to get open and has great football smarts.
2) The reason he has had such dry numbers the past few years are due mainly to the Quarterbacks and Injuries. Sure he hasn’t put up the numbers a starter is expected to get by name a reciever on Carolinas roster who has. Also it’s hard to stay healthy when you play with inaccurate quarterbacks who throw the ball to the spot where the reciever will get blasted the hardest. Go to nfl.com and look at his highlight against the Saints.
March 17th, 2008 at 4:34 pm
Don’t get me wrong, I really, really hope Colbert does well, I always want the Broncos to do well, I’m just trying to remain realistic that a guy who hasn’t done anything worthwhile in the league in nearly four years isn’t likely to do anything significant to improve our passing game.
If the Broncos draft Desean Jackson… I might just give up. I am flat-out scrawny, and he only outweighs me by 30 pounds. He’s going to break in half the first time he gets tackled.
But oh well, this offseason has been pretty bad in my opinion but whatever, I suppose we’ll see when the season starts.
March 17th, 2008 at 4:43 pm
As a long time Denver Fan, had season tics for 27 years, who just happens to live now in Houston, and had to endure the wrath of the Texan Fans when we played them last year here;I just have to think that all this bickering and crying about a 6th round draft choice is B/S. We need to ust sit and wait and hope the coaching staff does their homework and we have a productive draft. Then lets see what happens.
March 17th, 2008 at 4:43 pm
To Dave888259: Tell me one thing Ed McCaffrey did in the leauge before he was a bronco.
March 17th, 2008 at 4:48 pm
There are three recievers like in this Draft:
DeSean Jackson because of his speed and field awareness
Limas Sweed because he plays hard and would be a great compliment to Marshall
Earl Bennett because he and Cutler know how each other work and he is a great all-round wideout who simply produces
March 17th, 2008 at 4:52 pm
Colbert is the LEAST of our problems right now, our lines are TERRIBLE as of today. Our entire line is going to be changed for the 3rd straight year. Once again we’ll have someone new playing at LEAST 3 positions, this is becoming a joke. The D line we had in the 90’s had ONE guy that was the middle plug and the other three were allowed to move around and make plays. WE ARE MISSING A PLUG! Bailey will be fine at the SLB position, Detroits D has been terrible for years and most of it had to do with the coaching schemes. We need help at the lines, WR’s shouldn’t be the #1 priority. WR has become the crap shoot of the NFL draft but I’d love to get Eddie Royal if he’s there in the 2nd round. PURE SPEED and can ADJUST LIKE A MOFO!
March 17th, 2008 at 4:54 pm
Shanny does not think much of linemen or kickers !! It’s so obvious to me that if he would have just paid Reggie Hayward, Bertrand Berry & Trevor Pryce we would have an awesome defensive line along with Elvis. I doubt if we can find anyone in this years draft as good as Chris Myers is right now - see Harris from ND last year, maybe he’ll play this year !! As far as the people who commented on “… 36 year old center …” Tom Nalen, if he wants to play, let him. And, by the way, Hamilton was an All American Center at Minnesota and is the heir to Nalen, Myers was not.
We need linemen on both sides of the ball. But Shanny won’t pay for them EVER. Good Luck, Jay - you’ll need it next year !!
Has anybody noticed the traders up-grading their defensive backfield with DeAngelo Hall & Gibril Wilson ?? Come on Broncos, let’s get going !!!!!!
March 17th, 2008 at 5:06 pm
WHY????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????
March 17th, 2008 at 5:12 pm
OL is the foundation of the broncos, only aspect we have been consistent in for many years, which oh, by the way, reasons why our running game and passing game…uhmmm offense has been anything but flakey (barring the red-zone spazms of course).
Thanks Myers for filling in some hefty shoes.
p.s. all you Shanny haters can call Al Davis and cry on his shoulder, might as well, we don’t need you around here stinking up the place.
March 17th, 2008 at 5:25 pm
Although i do feel Myers is a good lineman, he came from the U which jut produces players, i also know that the offensive scheme that the Broncos use is sound. Year in and year out we produce good yards on the ground (except last year) and plays that really help with mis direction giving the QB lots o time to pass. With the vets who have proven to be starters coming back and hungry for the field our o line will be better.
However our D line has potential, before Jarvis Moss got injured he was looking strong and quick. Him and Dumervil on the ends should be deadly. Marcus Thomas is do what it takes to produce as young line man. I just hope that Moss isn’t to affected by his injury.
I would say that if/when we trade Travis for something, we will make a unpredictable move before the draft.
March 17th, 2008 at 5:34 pm
I dont hate shanahan, I just wish he would do something that makes sence, maybe he has something up his sleeve, I sure hope so!!!!!!
March 17th, 2008 at 5:47 pm
Don’t understand all the negativity. These types of transactions happen every year at free agent and draft time.
March 17th, 2008 at 5:49 pm
2008 draft is very deep in OL and in good football players for that matter. Now the Broncos have 9 picks and if they stay that way, here’s a possible wish-list: 1st=Chris Williams OT Vandy; 2nd=Trevor Laws DT ND; 4th=Dexter Jackson WR App.St.; 4th=Jeremy Zuttah OL Rutgers; 5th=Owen Schmitt FB WVA; 5th=Frank Okam DT Texas; 6th=Ben Moffit LB SFla.; 7th=Fernando Velasco G/C Georgia; 7th=Bobbie Williams FS Bethune-Cookman. It would be nice to get Dan Connor in the 1st, but OL is the priority; also to get Clady, but Williams is reasonable. RB would also be cool, but there are currently four of them, and good football players will be available as CFAs.
March 17th, 2008 at 6:08 pm
Not sure why when we have a thin O-line we would get rid of one. I think Shanny is done. The one area if last year proved anything was that we needed more O-line so lets get rid of a starter. DUH!!!!
March 17th, 2008 at 6:39 pm
Seems like an odd move but who knows the real reason… Maybe Shanny had good reason to trade Myers… it sure as hell doesn’t work on paper.
I trust Shanny.
still
March 17th, 2008 at 7:06 pm
I like it samparnell except that would make 2 drafts where skill players havnt been given any attention which might explain for the fall off in special teams play. And i think adding a better prospect at DE/OLB would be a better option
And i think mike firing the GM is a mistake he’s a genuis wit match ups and plays and system and all of that, but head coach and GM are too much for one person to do. It never works i just hope mike goes out and finds a good one that wont role over and grant him all he wants.
And Bronnchowie i wonderd the same thing and since betrand berry, reggie hayward, and t price left weve heard the same damn thing “broncos cant get pressure from their front 4″ and wit the exception of berry theyve moved on to have productive carriers. I think mike WAS under the alusion that plays make plays, instead of players (the brown D-line experiment) but now i think he’s seen the errors of his ways and realizes that no matter what system you have, you have to have good players to put in it for it to work, so now we have suffered for that mistake and now we are correctin the problem.
And what is with all of this negativity on the broncos goin 7-9 two years in a row. I mean how many teams go 5-11 or 3-13 or worse during their rebuilding years, weve got a new QB and its gonna take time for his talent to come to fruition our days of play off glory will return if not this year than i have no doubt we shall make a serious run in 2 years.
March 17th, 2008 at 7:10 pm
At least Foxworth is still a Bronco…so far. The lines need attention. The draft won’t always be this rich with them.
March 17th, 2008 at 7:29 pm
Before everyone gets too worked up, don’t forget, the Broncos have one of the 5 best records in all professional sports over the last decade. That didn’t happen by being stupid. Personally , I hope this means we won’t be “thin” on the o-line in the near future. I’m sure you all would have to agree that it’s painful to watch the undersized o-line getting shoved around by teams with huge d-lines. Players are getting bigger and still are atheletic like never before and this draft is full of quality o-lineman. As far as only geting a 6th round pick, I remember one pretty good one ,that be Terrill Davis. Go Broncos!
March 17th, 2008 at 7:54 pm
i think we just need to wait and see how this turns out how we start callin for shannys head. this is the same guy that took a rb in the 6th round who went on to become great befor his demise. jerry rice was took in like the 8th round i think tom brady the 6th look at ryan leaf a guy who was picked in the same 1st round as manning and now where is he, selling insurance for all we know we just gotta ride this out and hope for the best
March 17th, 2008 at 7:58 pm
Great, just great… Broncos sure look like genious`s now. I`ll take you back to when Nalen got hurt ( a big surprise at his age, huh?) and they put some no name WR on the roster to ride the bench and left Greg Eslinger on the practice squad just waiting to be stole by Cleveland (poor guy). The O-line would have been so much better with Myers at guard where he rocked, and Eslinger at center. I guess Eslinger`s rap sheet wasn`t long enough for Shanahan………By the way, I`ll bet you Nalen won`t make it past week 6. And while I`m venting, why the hell didn`t they play Harris and let Lepsis sit as soon as the realized the season ( and matt`s health ) was over????
March 17th, 2008 at 8:59 pm
All of this neagitivety is making me sick. For all of you naysayers please shut up. The last time I checked none of us were the head coach of the Broncos. Shannahan knows what he is doing and I can feel that there is something brewing. He always loves to make a statement in the offseason and with 9 picks they can do something. If they don’t make any moves, then they will probably draft another o-lineman in the sixth round that will have as big of an impact as Meyers. He really didn’t blow me away this year and Tom Nalen will be fine, oh yeah if he goes down Ben Hamilton was a center in college and has previously filled in for Nalen. I am just sick of this whining from all these Bronco “fans”. Let Mike do his job and the Broncos will return to their dominant form next season.

Oh yeah it would be sweat if the Broncos end up getting Julius Peppers, it seems weird that he would be in Denver at this time of the year. Hope they can work something out because that would be awesome.
March 17th, 2008 at 9:15 pm
There is something brewing alright. I hope that it is future success, but who can be sure? I am just irritated that we let one of our young talented linemen go. Can he be replaced? Probably. Will he be replaced by someone that already knows our system and could take the place of one of our aging vets? No. I feel bad for Jay if we have another season with lots of injurys. I know I wouldn’t want to be behind a mostly freshmen line with guys like Allen, Merriman, and Burgess comming at me 6 games a year.
March 17th, 2008 at 9:16 pm
samparnell, i like ur draft but i think earl bennett would be better than dexter jackson and he might be there in the fourth round.
March 17th, 2008 at 9:17 pm
Gotta love it. here we go with “fans” becoming the self-appointed monitors of the message boards. No one on here giving their opinions is the head coach, because this board is for the fans to voice their opinions. Telling one another to “shut up” only makes us sound like Raiders fans. Let’s respect each other’s right to an opinion. And, while I agree we had a pretty good 6th round pick, having one as good as TD is by far the exception. That’s why we remember where he was drafted………
March 17th, 2008 at 9:30 pm
I agree. An impact player that late is very hard to come by. There are reasons that they fell so far. Some reasons are dumb (like Tom Brady. He was “slow”), but usually the guys drafted that late do not make much of a differance.
March 17th, 2008 at 10:36 pm
well i definitely think myers was a huge loss, he is young, and has talent and im sure in a few years he would have blossomed, a sixth round pick is fine and all but myers was good for depth
i think we have been doing a good job this offseason, not great, but boss and colbert are good pickup, the two best we got, lets all jsut hope boss doesn’t have injury problems like he has had the last few seasons
March 17th, 2008 at 11:44 pm
everyone has to stop talking about myers being worth more than a 6th rounder, because thats exactly what he was. i agree we should have kept him, but we can draft a lineman in the 5th or 6thround and end up in the same spot.
March 18th, 2008 at 12:51 am
Shanahan knows what he’s doing. We are not smarter than him. He’s brought us two superbowls so for Gods sake don’t count him out yet.
March 18th, 2008 at 4:42 am
The only things that makes any sense of the”trade” is if:
1) Houston was willing to pay Myers way more than he’s worth
2) If he signed as a restricted free agent the Broncos would have receiverd a 6th round pick in the 2009 draft.
PS Whoever spoke of Champ Bailey as a great example of a free agent pick up by the Broncos. DDDUUUUHHHH!!!! We traded Clinton Portis for Champ.
March 18th, 2008 at 4:48 am
I don’t get it. Now we have to find someone as good as Meyers AND get him 20 or so games of starting experience at 2 positions.
All I can say is pray Big Ben can stay healthy.
March 18th, 2008 at 6:53 am
ramboskithefan,
you are an idiot. Justin Hartwig, from the panthers is on FA. Not Nick Hardwick.
March 18th, 2008 at 7:00 am
we shoulda kept him
March 18th, 2008 at 9:11 am
I think we are forgetting about Mark Fenton….he was on the practice squad last year so we didn’t hear to much about him, I understand he’s gonna be real good….he had a good career in college and I think with him there Meyers became replaceable….why not get something for him, a 6th round pick….theres gems there in the late rounds….T.D., Tom Brady…. shoot Nalen was taken in the 7th round….so this move don’t bother me….I want to know what Gary K. sees in the guy to give him a contract like that, thats what I want to know….
March 18th, 2008 at 9:39 am
Not a high enough pick for a good o lineman
March 18th, 2008 at 9:45 am
Hey guys don’t think this is bad. EMALDO is doing the right thing, looking at the bright side. If you’ve read one of my previous comments on SAFETIES FIRST it said that the Broncos have had much luck with late round picks. To me this is a positive because the Broncos get another pick and they got it by trading a player who doesn’t get much action. Not in that sense. With this pick they could add depth to any position such as O-Line, LB, or WR. Personally I think the Broncos should have tried to get another 4th or 5th rounder but it’s all done and over with.
ramboskithefan are you from South Dakota? South Dakota kicks @$$. especially east river.
Anyway, I’d like to see a steal come in this round.
March 18th, 2008 at 9:46 am
Jmonk
jerry rice was like the 17th or 16th pick in his draft, actually he almost ended up bein a cowboy, tom laundry made a move up to get him but the 49ers picked him right before the cowboys pick, its funny how things work out
Ad you people talking about how irrelivant a 6th round pick is shut up. its only a useless pick if the team usin it puts no effort behind it, but your good teams go through the same selection process that they went through on the first day picks. how many #1 overall picks have been completly useless. marquis colston was like 6 picks from bein “mr. irrelivant” T.J. houshmanzada was like 3 picks from the last in the draft. Rod smith was a rookie free agent back when they had like 11 rounds in the draft, jimmy smith was a late round pick, tikki barber, tony romo, ronald curry, the list goes on and on. and those are just players who reached “star” status, not to mention critical role players, or just guys that add necesary depth, and lets not forget who plays on special teams, which it seems most Bronco fans feel is in need of improvment, it sure as hell isnt your first round picks
March 18th, 2008 at 9:55 am
shanahan isnt the problem.. since i last checked there were people in the front office who negotiated the deals besides the head coach. i dont like the move but i dont hate it either.. last year was the 2nd time in a little over ten years the broncos didnt have a .500+ season so i trust whatever shanny and the front office do

Dr. Doom
You’re point about Ed McCaffrey has value… Up to a certain point. Let me explain
Ed’s first four years in the league (everything before he became a Bronco)
Receptions: 103 Yards: 1222 TD: 11
Colbert’s first four years (Everything before this year)
Receptions: 109 Yards 1424 TD: 7
Pretty comparable, right? Sure until you add this stat:
GAMES STARTED
Ed: *4*
Colbert *43*
McCaffrey put up nearly IDENTICAL numbers (With 1.5 times as many TD’s) as a 3rd or 4th receiver. Colbert has been a #2 receiver for most of his pro career, and hasn’t been effective. In other words, Ed was exactly the sort of guy who goes somewhere else, into a featured role and has the potential to improve drastically. He was a hard worker, and he made the most of his opportunities, but just didn’t have that many opportunities. Colbert, however, is the sort of guy that has been in a featured role throughout his career, and he’s put up backup numbers in spite of being a starter.

I like what they Broncos are doing. By adding more draft picks they have a better opportunity to rebuild their front 4 (or mainly another DT spot along with OT and WR). I think they have have 3 options in the first round and here they are…
1. Keep the spot and hope for the best.
2. Trade up to #3-6 and try to get Ellis or Dorsey and lose another pick later.
3. Trade down to #18-26 and get Dan Connor along with a 3rd round pick. Dan Connor is the next Bill Romanowski. Everyone remember him?
If Option #3 is done the Broncos will have 9 picks in this draft. If not they’ll have 8. Still that is 2 times as many as last year and look what we got out of last year’s draft. If they Broncos can do that good with 4 picks imagine what they could do with 8 or 9.
March 18th, 2008 at 11:16 am
Signs that the OL was moving toward rebuilding have been visible for some time: 1) ‘06 Lepsis’ season ending injury; 2) Foster was just not working out; 3) preseason ‘07 Hamilton goes on IR w/”spinal cord concussion”; 4) Nalen tears a muscle and is out for the rest of the season. Shanahan obviously saw it and, in the middle of rebuilding the DL, drafted Harris and signed Holland. It surprises me, too, that he let Myers go. But, this is a great year to draft OL. Two or three picks could be devoted to it. If Myers was in this draft, I don’t even know if he would go in the 6th or even be drafted at all; that’s how deep the OL is in this year’s draft. The Broncos now have nine choices unless they trade up which I don’t think is advisable. They might trade down which might be good if they got another pick (3rd?), but not OK if it costs them Chris Williams or possibly Ryan Clady. Otah is not suitable for the Broncos. The Broncos need to hoard draft picks and seriously consider each one and BUILD. Look at the Giants’ ‘07 draft. Weren’t all of their rookies playing in the Super Bowl? I guess the Broncos might send some draft picks to the Jets in a deal for DeWayne Robertson, but even then there are quality players to be had this year with what would be left in such a scenario.
March 18th, 2008 at 11:24 am
We got him in the 6th round 3 years ago. We can pick someone eles to replace him. If the front office has their head in the game, we will be bolstering the offensive line early in the draft ANYWAY. We do not have room in the cap for an 11 mollion dollar contract match AND the draft. We are getting smart about who we want to go after.
March 18th, 2008 at 12:04 pm
yah yah im a idiot cuz i got the first name wrong…plus i think i meant shane olliva…sorry crazy ass i might have spelled his name wrong…but i dont go to nfl.com b4 i write one of these….
PLUS WHATS THE DEAL WITH BRONCOS FANS GOING AT EACH OTHER LIKE THIS YO….if u hater and a broncos fan….go join the raiders messege board and talk your trash there!!
March 18th, 2008 at 12:30 pm
bottom line the Denver Bronco’s organization has a winning tradition and its proven, year in and year out we’re contenders….and 1 losing season isn’t going to make me 2nd guess the front office….they’re there for a reason and we’re not….Shanny is a genius and I have no doubt in my mind that we will be a better team this up coming season….I used to get real updset when we wouldn’t land the big name free agents, or that big name draft pick….but I realize theres more to evaluating talent than a 30 sec film clip here and there, and a 1 day showing at the combine….so Im gonna let them do their job and I’ll be the fan of whoever is in the Orange and Blue….
March 18th, 2008 at 12:33 pm
Im from texas but have always been a broncos fan since the steve atwater days, i remember the late hit that was put on Eddy mac while he was layin on the ground. But can some one explain to me the hatred between raiders and broncos fan, i know al davis owes mike like 2 million bucks or some amount of money, but i just dont get it.
Id think thered be more of a rivalry with the cheifs, just based on the games and outcomes and individual performances that have come from those games like the D.J hall returns that made him famous or when Clinton portis anal rapped them with those long runs, or when mike anderson had his big days against them, it just seems that those games against KC are always somthin that just stay with you,
March 18th, 2008 at 12:40 pm
never thought of the poorus QB situation in panthers as an excuse for lack o colbert production
March 18th, 2008 at 1:32 pm
Dear m.c. the great,
Been a Bronco fan since I moved to Denver area in 1964. Broncos have played the Raiders (and Chiefs & Chargers) two games/season (home & away) ever since. Fierce rivalries exist amongst all those teams and their fans, but especially between the Broncos and Raiders. The Raiders dominated the division for almost 40 years. When the Broncos first became a winning team in the mid-late 70s, much bottled up rage erupted especially when the Broncos won the division and went to their first Super Bowl. That’s back when Tom Jackson used to talk trash to John Madden on the sidelines. The Raiders used to do questionable things like smear stickum on their uniforms and intentionally fumble forward out-of-bounds (Dave Casper) to get a first down. Al Davis has always been influential having coached and been AFL Commisioner. Raiders fans have always been crazy in a more intimidating way than the equally insane Bronco fans. It’s like any rivalry when one has dominated for a long time. When the underdog finally gets the upper hand, nothing but contempt follows. It may also have to do with the cities: Oakland is stark, distinct and energetic; San Diego is laid back and Mediterraneanesque; Kansas City is kind of boring and nondescript in a bland midwestern kind of way; and, Denver still retains that wild west mining boom kind of wildness that wants to mix it up. Maybe that’s why the fans of those two places clash so well.
March 18th, 2008 at 1:34 pm
*N.B. AFL began in 1960. Clarification.
March 18th, 2008 at 1:51 pm
yeah, and the rivalry is REAL….I live 30 mins outside of OAK and I feel it first hand….its pretty bad guys, pretty bad….but Im still out here representin!
March 18th, 2008 at 5:49 pm
I think I may have a solution to the WR needs in Denver (just to change the subject).
Ocho Cinco is looking for a new scenery and Denver is different than Cincinatti. Maybe trade our 2 fourth rounders or 1 4th and 1 5th rounder. Anybody else think that’s a good idea?
And in the draft does anybody else like the idea of trading down to 19-26 trying to get Dan Connor and a 2-4 round pick? Like I said before I think Connor is the next Bill Romanowski. Then if we traded for Chad we’d have a 1, 2, 3(for trading down), 4, 5, 6, and 7 round picks. (1 4th and 5th for Chad).
March 18th, 2008 at 6:12 pm
thanks for the clarification samparnell. It sounds a bit like my old high school rivalry except hopefully no one has died over a rivalry that you have to pay to be a part of…. its kinda sad that fans dont change no matter of age, intelligence, education or money….Back to football though
So i was lookin at some stats and thinkin about the rebuilding state the broncos are in. And some things stood out on the stats, Turnovers, fumbles specificaly where a major problem on i think that just from players maturing that will become less of a problem.
So with that being said i dont think we need to focus too much on offensive skill positions, we got a runnin threat a good TE and Marshall and of course Cutler. I do think getting a mid round running back would be smart simply because I cant think of any good RB’s that would be coming out next year correct me if im wrong on that. and theres a chance to get a real game breacker all through this draft. So im with the whole bring in bigger o-line men cause they got there asses beat last year but if you think about it we played a tough schedule against some of the best deffenses in the game especially aginst the run: titans, Jacksonville, Indy, Pitsburgh, Green bay, houston, minnesota, not to mention playin the chargers twice(ouch) so actually when you step back and look at things its not that bad, where a young team, and besides lynch and champ what vets really demand much respect on this team. along with playing a tuff schedule
so i say 3 picks for the o line 2 for D-line 1 on a RB(jamall charles please) 1 WR and 2LB this way you get guys who can contribute on special teams, and bring depth to our positions in need. Any more picks for skill players is just going for luxury or sexy picks and that we dont need
March 18th, 2008 at 6:22 pm
broncoboy chad is in his first year of his new contract he’s stuck in cincy like it or not, he can say what he wants but he aint goin any where. And brandon marshall will put up number just as good as chad will we dont need 2 all star wide outs just one that other teams have to respect.
And why pass on the top line men in the first round that will have a bigger impact than a MLB
March 18th, 2008 at 7:40 pm
m.c.,
I think Jamaal Charles is projected pretty high, 1st or 2nd. He might not even be there when the Broncos pick in the 2nd. If the Broncos had a 3rd, Tashard Choice or Kevin Smith might be there. One wonders how much his surgery will set Jonathan Stewart back. One report said 4-6 months. A couple of interesting backs who might be available late or even CFA: Chad Simpson from Morgan State and Jalen Parmele from Toledo. Once you get past the top level stars, this group seems to have a lot of good football players at several different positions. I agree with wanting to draft a promising MLB. Ben Moffit might be there when the Broncos use the 6th from Houston. Don’t forget about FB. The Broncos don’t really have one. When T.D. had his great seasons, he had Howard Griffith lead blocking. A good FB can have a big impact on the running game, the passing game and ST, too. Last year I really wanted the Broncos to get Brian Leonard. Oh well, The Broncos drafted some great players last year.
March 18th, 2008 at 8:48 pm
I think that Chris Myers is worth more than a 6th or maybe a 5th or so but if that means more players out of the draft and possibly a trade or some sort or deal on daft day I’m all right with it.
March 18th, 2008 at 8:51 pm
Bring back Kubiaaaaaak!!!
March 19th, 2008 at 7:52 am
What’s with you people and Jamaal Charles? We have Selvin Young and Andre Hall both waiting for another chance to shine. Sure the Broncos might need a power back for those short yardage situations but we have home run threats.
If the Broncos do trade down they could get Kentwan Balmer too. Then in the second round grab Erin Henderson, Xavier Adibi, Tavares Gooden or Marcus Howard all good outside linebackers that are fast and strong.
m.c. the great, Dan Connor plays outside and inside. So HA!
samparnell, THANK YOU. I have been trying to get the need for a fullback across people’s minds and you have shone it worked. I still think Carl Stewert is one of the better FBs in the draft. With his power and speed he could lead Selvin Young down field and blow everyone out of his way. It would really be fun to watch him blow up Shawne Merriman.
March 19th, 2008 at 7:58 am
I think the trade was made to use some of the extra picks we have in the late rounds to move up and get a third round pick. I have said it before and i will say it agian OL, WR, RB is heavy in this draft and we need to take one of each in the first three rounds. In order to do that we need to trade up for a third round pick and that extra pick for Myers will get us there. First round pick - OL Clady second round pick WR Manningham third round pick RB J Charles or M Hart.
March 19th, 2008 at 8:09 am
I’ve been reading through the various “expert” draft magazines. They all agree that the Broncos needs in order of importance are: 1) DT, 2) OL, 3) LB. so, what do these “experts” project as the Broncos 1st round pick?
Lindy’s Pro Football Draft: WR DeSaen Jackson ??????
Sporting News Draft: OT Jake Long with the comment that ” Even though Long doesn’t fit the Broncos typical offensive lineman profile” ???
Pro Draft 2008 Draft Guide: LB Keith Rivers with the comment that “desperate need for linerbackers could force the Broncos to reach again.” ??????????????
It’s going to be an interesting draft. I sure like the Vandy OT. Lots of high praise for passing blocking which is the phase of the game hardest to master for an OL.
March 19th, 2008 at 8:46 am
Broncoboy
answer me this is, conner better than DJ at out side do you think boss baily will be playin on the inside NO if he’s drafted to us his ass will be in the middle. and like i said if you dont have a good line infront of your linebackers it dosnt matter who you got at linebacker cause there gona suck. And im just not for takin a linebacker in the first round when this draft is flooded with great prospects.
And if youve seen charles play its honestly like lookin at the great old clinton portis days and seein him run in a straight line out of no where for like 70 yards over and over and over, he’s a complete back got good size can break tackels (although rarely has to), got good open feild moves(rarely has to use em) and he’s tough, gets better as the game goes on how many speed backs can you say that about, oh and did i mention his BLAZING SPEED, You got him wrong as a power back
oldsouth
Im with you its amazing how all the football gurus talk about geting better on the o-line and d-line but say we should take jackson, dosnt he scream ted ginn to any one, with the exception that jackson dosnt sound and look like a stupid 4th grader in his interveiws, but yeah i say definitly pass on that one
March 19th, 2008 at 9:40 am
I never frickin said he was a power back I said the Broncos NEED a power back. Travis Henry isn’t gonna cut it. and if he is so frickin good then why isn’t he at the same level as Darren McFadden, Felix Jones, Jonathon Stewert and Rashard Mendenhall? I’ve heard those names MANY times on different sites and NFL shows. never do I hear of Jamaal Charles.
If we draft a LB in the first round then we could pick up DTs in the later rounds. Pat Sims, Trevor Laws, and Dre Moore will be the best in the second round. Ahtyba Rubin, Frank Okam, Nick Hayden, and Letroy Guion and the best of the fourth. And the list goes on.
And to draft an o-lineman we have Oniel Cousins, Kirk Barton, Barry Richardson, Duane Brown and Jeremy Zuttah are all good prospects in the fourth round. Bobby Byrd, Carlton Medder, and Shannon Boatman are good in the fifth.
If you haven’t gotten my point yet I am saying there is a lot of depth on both of the lines. Not much at LB where we COULD improve. If the Broncos were to get a great LB and monsterous DTs the defensive would be solidified. Then if an OT is draft Jay will have time to make plays. And if anyone would like to know who else the Broncos would get tell me and I’ll gladly let you know.
March 19th, 2008 at 9:55 am
Here is one to discuss. According to the Philadelphia Inquirer the Eagles have asked Vnady reciever Earl Bennett for a personal workout today. Most of the experts have him as a 2nd round pick. Since we pick before them, do we take him in round 2? He has Jay throwing for him at his pro day on Fri, so it could give us a look at the chemistry that they already posses together. I wouldn’t be surprised to see Shanny and a few other Bronco reps there. So, do we pull the trigger in round 2? I think we should.
March 19th, 2008 at 10:59 am
we could take him in the 2nd round but then we might be passing up some of the better defensive players in the draft. He might be worth it at 5′11″ and 208 but it seems his stock is dropping. Maybe get an early 3rd round pick and get him there.
March 19th, 2008 at 11:30 am
blah blah blah blah i see all these words but dont hear them…ya know. this is gonna be cutlers third season in the nfl, i think the cat has got huge huge upside, and we havent seen even the begining of it yet. im STILL willing to give coach and the entire team the benifit of the doubt. so whatever they do besides trade cutler or marhall or scheff, im cool. well and a few other choice players. i mean yes myers stepped in and played really well, but that is part of the business. players step up other teams see it and go after them. so theres my nickles worth
peace out bronco land
shelbO
March 19th, 2008 at 11:50 am
i said we should get an ol for 1 round and we should darell jackson from the 49ers that just got relase tell me wat u think
March 19th, 2008 at 1:03 pm
It is becoming more aparent as time goes by that the Broncos and the Texans have a friendly thing going. (Kubiak connection) Fine, do a gentleman’s deal with Meyers, eventhough we need help on the O-Line ourselves. And maybe we make something out of the 6th pick. But when the Texans decide to get rid of the under-used David Anderson, I hope they remember the Broncos and pay us a favor back. A tough, slot-type receiver with incredible hands…
March 19th, 2008 at 2:18 pm
Johnnynow- We’re set at slot reciever…With The Slot Machine, Glenn Martinez, and Keary Colbert (who is interchangeable from the slot to outside and so fourth…) we are fine.
BroncoBoy2012- No ofense but, we have a better shot at getting all of the Raiders draft picks this year then Chad Johnson. First of all we don’t have nearly enough cap room for Chad; and even if we did I’m sure there is a team willing to give Cincinati way more for Chad Johnson than Mike Shanahan. Besides all he would do is bitch and moan about the amount of balls he would get in games because one, denver doesn’t pass as much as cinci and two, Marshall is Cutlers favorite.
As for for Mike’s draft plans…what does he do whenever we build up draft choices? We trade up. Plain and simple. Also, I don’t think he will trade down because a team can only have ten draft choices.
March 19th, 2008 at 2:19 pm
charles is the man…young was the man……but i say we keep young one more year…then if u really want a texas running back…go with Savage..he is sick……..!!
March 19th, 2008 at 3:12 pm
m.c., Bronco Boy, shelbo,
Calm down. It’s still over a month before the draft. The Broncos might trade up, down or stay put. One thing they don’t really need is a 35 year-old ex-Chief O-lineman. The 9 picks they have now are plenty to continue rebuilding. It’s no use arguing over specific players because as the draft unfolds, every team starts going to plan B, C or…when whom they projected isn’t there in any given round. I’ll bet that no two ordinal lists of players are the same amongst the 32 teams. Heck, I bet that inside of each team there are different lists with scouts and assistants lobbying for their guy(s). For sure the coaches and trainers know where the real weaknesses are and where to add help.
March 19th, 2008 at 3:43 pm
Good point samparnell. I would hate to see us chase someone else’s old O-lineman, who is a potential injury waiting to happen. I also would hate to see Chad Johnson in a Denver uniform. The negative effect he would likely have on the locker room would be tons worse than anything Javon brought. At first glance, I did not like the Myers deal. Now that I have checked out what everyone has to say, I am coming around. Remember the Cowboys of the 90s? That team was built almost exclusively through draft picks gained in a trade of Herschel Walker. That’s what the team needs to do here. Keep all these draft picks, use them to build insane depth, and reap the rewards for the next 10 years.
March 19th, 2008 at 5:09 pm
Good luck with your future endeavors, Mr. Mason. You’ve been (and will continue to be) a fantastic member of Broncos country. Your blogs will be sorely missed.
March 19th, 2008 at 5:26 pm
Well, Anrdew:
I guess that’s it for “Mason’s Morsels”. Thanks for putting up with us bunch of loud-mouthed boneheads who apparently have not much of a life.
That’s corporate downsizing for you! What you needed was a LABOR UNION! Good job and take care.
March 19th, 2008 at 7:20 pm
Andrew, I was sorry to hear the news. Thanks for all the time you spent on blogs and videos, I really enjoyed your work the last couple of years. Good luck in wherever you go next.
March 19th, 2008 at 7:41 pm
OK just stating my opinion, and anyone else can do this too without arguing(sorry for arguing on my part peeps), I think this is what the Broncos should do
1st rd (trade down to 20-26) - Kentwan Balmer - DT
2nd rd - Early Doucet or Eddie Royal - WR
3rd rd (from trading down) - Tony Hills or Oneil Cousins - OT
4th rd - Kirk Barton or Barry Richardson - OT
4th rd - David Roach or Marcus Griffin - S
5th rd- Letroy Guion or Frank Morton - DT
5th rd- Adrian Arrington or Darius Reynaud - WR
6th rd- Wilrey Fontenot or David Vobora - CB, OLB
7th rd - Carl Stewert or Robert Henderson - FB, DE/DT
March 19th, 2008 at 8:58 pm
WHAT???
I am up here in Alaska and not privy to the information you have in Denver. What happened to Mason? He was (is) an information lifeline to me. Somebody fill me in. samparnell, you get smarter every time you post. A lot of thought and knowledge goes into your posts. Thanks
March 19th, 2008 at 9:13 pm
2nd might be a tad early for Royal (although I really like him). We’ll see where he goes. You might be reaching, but maybe not. If you want a WR in the 2nd, don’t forget about Andre Caldwell. 3rd might be too early for Hills and Cousins. Barton is a right tackle. Two offensive tackles? Consecutively? 4th is definitely too early for Griffin. You might get Arrington in the 5th, but I doubt if Reynaud will be there. He’s more of a 4th rounder. If you took a very good left OT in the first, a good DT might still be there in the 2nd with a promising receiver w/#104 in the 4th. Like: #12=Chris Williams OT; #42=Trevor Laws DT; #104=Dexter Jackson WR; #115=Jeremy Zuttah G; #130=Owen Scmitt FB; #140=Frank Okam DT; #177=Ben Moffitt MLB; #202=Fernando Velasco C; #209=Bobbie Williams S. See, I even got a guy from Texas in there for you. Yeah, I know, three guys from the Big East, but what can I say, I watch a lot of Big East football. Chris Williams, however, might be the best left tackle coming out of the SEC this year, and being a Vandy guy, he isn’t dumb nor is Tevor Laws from Notre Dame. Dexter is fast, Zuttah is versatile; I can’t stop thinking about Schmitt breaking a tackle at the LOS and going all the way down the sideline over 50 yds. against Oklahoma (the Big East sooo punked the Big 12); Okam is huge (and in the 5th, the price per pound will be very good), Moffitt’s stock is rising and he’s a big time hitter, Velasco is a steal and I am impressed with Bobbie Williams’ productivity in college. I’m studying possible CFAs and am continuously impressed with the number of good football players. Sorry for the length of this entry and I better get off before they turn the lights out…on the blog, that is.
March 19th, 2008 at 9:15 pm
Mason, you’ll be missed !!!!!!!!
March 19th, 2008 at 9:16 pm
I just got the news from Pravda. “Money is tight at Dove Valley”? Damn, I will miss Andrew! Best of luck wherever you end up.
March 19th, 2008 at 9:23 pm
Thanks, firstfan. Andrew Mason has been purged by the fascists and sent to Siberia. Pardon the mixed metaphors, but bottomline (literally) is that he got the axe. Downsizing. Your next blogmaster will be transmitting from Bombay complete w/charming accent.
March 19th, 2008 at 10:02 pm
I cannot believe Mason was let go. This is borderline criminal. We will miss your great insight as well as the depth, breadth and unique touch you gave in your reporting.
March 19th, 2008 at 10:48 pm
You have got to be kidding me. I can’t believe they let him go. What is going on? Good luck Mr. Mason.
March 20th, 2008 at 3:03 am
Mason, you are a saint. After all you’ve done for the broncos and their fans. This is a horrible move by the FO. Good luck in whatever you do.
March 20th, 2008 at 7:06 am
Wow. I just saw this latest news too. Mr. Mason, if you read these after you are gone, I want to say thank you on behalf of all Broncos fans. You have always presented great information in a timely fashion, and the work you do during the season, especially on game day, was always of the highest quality. That despite the fact you usually had 5 projects going on at the same time on game days. What’s more, you made these message boards a place where all Broncos fans felt welcome to express their feelings on any subject, and to have fun doing it. I know most of us on these boards feel we are losing a close friend, but we wish you the best of luck wherever you end up.
March 20th, 2008 at 8:28 am
Mason, Thank you for all of the time spent helping all of us get a little closer to the team that we love. Although not a move I understand, I wish you all the best of luck, and hope that you can move on to greener pastures.
March 20th, 2008 at 9:09 am
DeWayne failed his physical w/the Broncos. Perhaps the Broncos will draft two DT now and add a CFA or two at that position. Internet news says the Broncos have offered Casey Wiegmann a contract. Maybe Nalen and Hamilton aren’t as healthy as they say they are. Otherwise, I don’t see the logic on spending $ (especially when Bowlen is firing people), reps, a roster spot and game time on a 35 year-old player. All that stuff should be going into young players. Is Foxworth not to be traded, but given an appropriate contract? Bowlen expressed disappointment in a number of things including negative influence in the lockerroom. Chris Myers is traded. Then there are the unnamed Broncos allegedly involved in sex orgies at a strip club after hours….. Bowlen is on the collective bargaining committee representing the owners. This doesn’t bode well for future labor relations. Ironically, Foxworth may find himself personally involved in negotiations as well. Some have discussed Chad Johnson who probably won’t be a Bronco based on cost alone. However, some have lumped him with “bad influences” like T.O. and Randy Moss. He did used to annoy me, but tolerance is needed when accommodating the way others express themselves. I don’t think he was one of the Bengals “in trouble” was he? It may be a mistake to judge him too harshly. After the Super Bowl, Randy Moss showed class and maturity during the press conference. Patriots should have helped their OTs w/a TE & a FB and should have thrown to him more. What is up w/T.O. and Romo LAUGHING after incomplete passes when it’s the 4th quarter and you’re behind? No wonder Hitler went off! Three Cheers For Andrew Mason who deserves a moesel or two of best wishes!
March 20th, 2008 at 9:16 am
Mason you will be missed by the Broncos community.
Alright now that I have said that I would like to say — I support my draft 100%. Kentwan Balmer is not early first round material and trading down would give us some extra picks. A double bonus ++. Maybe WR could be addressed later but I like Early Doucet and Eddie Royal. Maybe switch OT to the 2nd round and WR to the third but I’m not in charge. I think Carl Stewert could be drafted by the Broncos organization because he is a top 5 fullback (out of like 15 total) and I think he is a good player.
samparnell the reason i have Oneil Cousins taken in the 3rd round is because if we trade down to 20-26 we’ll get a late pick in the 3rd and he is 3rd-4th round material. That’s what I’ve heard from draft analysts and other sources. personally i dislike Chris Williams so early in the first round. I think Jake Long and Ryan Clady are the best 2 OTs. Jeff Otah and Chris Williams are for picks +20.
If anyone else would like to comment on it feel free to do so.

I also just heard the news that Mason will not be a part of the Broncos any longer. I completely do not understand this, Mason was doing an excellent job and was recognized nationally for having one of the best NFL blogs. What are the Broncos going to do now, not have a website? Or have someone else fill in? I can hardly imagine the level of quality would be the same. Come on Broncos, what are you guys doing here? Managing the salary cap is one thing but not enough money for operations? What are you doing with the ticket increases? Where is that money going to? But at least let Mason say goodbye to us and let us know where we can follow him on other endeavors. Mason please know you will be missed.
March 20th, 2008 at 10:29 am
I guess we will just have to keep up on this blog until Bowlen pulls the plug. I think everyone is underestimnating our O-line. With Nalen and Hamilton back I think we are pretty darn strong. Harris should be our answer at tackle. Kuper is solid. I do not understand the Myers trade at all but if we end up with Wiegmann we can have one old guy backing up two other old guys.
March 20th, 2008 at 11:09 am
That’s right! Watch out for the old guys…especially the old, fat guys.
March 20th, 2008 at 11:40 am
I don’t think everyone is underestimating the o-line, I think most of us are concerned because the o-line is not getting any younger and Nalen and Hamilton are both coming off serious injuries. I love them both, but I almost wish Hamilton would retire. I’m not a doctor or anything, but missing a whole season with after-effects of a spinal cord concussion sounds bad to me, and I don’t think any of us want to see him ruin the rest of his life for the sake of rushing back onto the field. And as a backup….a 35 year old?!?! I only hope the team holds onto all of the draft picks, and uses one or two on fresh blood on the line that can develop for a year or two.
March 20th, 2008 at 11:43 am
Man this sucks Mason is gone. His blog was the only one I ever read. But, what can you do? I am not sure if i like the idea of bringing in Wiegmann, but I have faith in Shanny.
March 20th, 2008 at 12:12 pm
Dang you go to sleep, wake up and the worlds gone to ruins, why is mason gone
March 20th, 2008 at 1:42 pm
Mason - you deserved better. This is really, really weird stuff. Maybe Bowlen has taken a huge, huge hit on the stock market or something. Or maybe Bowlen has the inside information that the League is actually going to have an uncapped year in 2010, and he’s cutting costs in order to have more cash available then. The organization is confusing the heck out of me.
March 20th, 2008 at 2:13 pm
BroncoBoy2012,
Tony Hills had a season ending injury in ‘07. Kirk Barton is a right tackle and 4th is way too early for Barry Richardson who seems slow. Letroy Guion will probably be available in the 6th or 7th. Frank Morton and Robert Henderson may not be drafted. Darius Reynaud will be gone by the Broncos second 5th round pick. Don’t forget that the Broncos have two 7th round picks. Carl Stewart may be gone by the 7th round, but it’s hard to tell with fullbacks. Brian Leonard was picked higher than most fullbacks are last year. I notice you have three from Conf. USA, one from the WAC and one from Mtn.West. How much longer will we blog here?
March 20th, 2008 at 2:32 pm
Hey Cecil Sapp just re-signed with Denver. I am glad we re-signed him, he did a good job last year and I think he will only get better.
March 20th, 2008 at 3:21 pm
The O line is getting younger with Kuper and Harris. Even if we add one new starter a year for the next three years we will have one of the youngest lines in the NFL and will be good for a long time. I don’t know the draft class as well as samparnell but I think it is way deep in O line this year. We could pick up two potential starters to learn from the old guys.
March 20th, 2008 at 3:37 pm
i like bringing in wiegmann….if Nalen cant go….we have a guy who has a nice active games streak going..plus a he is from KC…so he knows whats at stake….and last guy i remember coming from kC was neil smith….he understood that we wanna smash KC every year…hopefully he will provide sum insite on how KC runs there plays or what LJ is most use to…i think it cant hurt…locker room guy and tuff!!
March 20th, 2008 at 5:03 pm
The Wiegmann signing could be really good for this team. Like Neil Smith that was also brought in here from KC, he is an older player that understands the game. If having 2 guys that are older providing mentorship to young players on the line is good, I would have to assume that having 3 is even better. We signed him for two seasons, so he will probably retire from here. If we are planning on spending more than 2 picks on linemen in this draft, than it makes sense that they will have another vet to show them how to be productive in the NFL for a long time. Bravo Zulu to the Broncos for *FINALLY* adding some depth and experience to the line to help foster in the future of this club.
March 20th, 2008 at 5:29 pm
samsparnell remember this one kid out of Oklahoma. his name was Adrian Peterson and he came off a collarbone injury. I believe he set the record for rushing yards in a game and had the 2nd most rushing yards this season. I think we could try getting Tony Hills. And we could always use competition at right tackle or just move the guy over to left. He could adjust. Also I found out the Broncos only have 1 7th round pick. The one from the Bucs I dont think they get unless Plummer plays. Reynaud isnt the most talented player and teams may look at Marcus Monk (6′4″ 210) if they want a big guy because Reynaud is only 5′9″. And if the Broncos addressed WR in the 6th round they good get Ernie Wheelwright (6′4″ 210 also). Then they’d have Brandon (6′4″ 230), Ernie (6′4″ 210) and Brandon (5′11 192). We’d have 2 homerun hitters(Brandons) and a possession guy (Ernie). or if we’re looking for speed either address earlier or Lavelle Hawkins is decently fast.
If anyone would like to know where I get my info on my prospects it is http://walterfootball.com or Path To The Draft on NFL Network (154 on Dish).
March 20th, 2008 at 5:30 pm
I’m sure most every guy on this blog would give you a letter of recommendation! Thanks for the outstanding job you’ve done keeping us full time bronco fans informed and entertained! Good luck Mason !
March 20th, 2008 at 7:20 pm
Good signing in Wiegmann and ity would be funny signing Rodney Bailey, that way we could have Baileys everywhere on the field and at the sametime hes a DT.
BTW, Thanks Mason for everythin and I dont know what ill do without you
LOL gd luck in life!

I fear with the moves we have made this off season that we are in for a miserable season. The Chargers will win the AFC West, the Raiders have made significant moves to improve their roster, and we will be fighting the Chiefs for last place. Fingers crossed we pull out a miracle at the draft.
March 21st, 2008 at 7:39 am
Did any of you see an article about Masons departure? I guess I am just wanting to make sure it’s not a hoax. If he did get fired, that is horrible and who will take his place?

It was in RMN and Denver Post and even in Pravda. See below:

Thanks, firstfan. Andrew Mason has been purged by the fascists and sent to Siberia. Pardon the mixed metaphors, but bottomline (literally) is that he got the axe. Downsizing. Your next blogmaster will be transmitting from Bombay complete w/charming accent.
March 21st, 2008 at 2:21 pm
Dear firstfan,
I thought you were kidding about Pravda. Was it really in Pravda? Is it in English or do you read it in Russian? By the Way, Elam signed with the Falcons.
March 21st, 2008 at 2:37 pm
where did you hear that about elam?
March 21st, 2008 at 3:06 pm
It’s on denverpost.com. I think they made a big mistake letting Elam go
March 21st, 2008 at 3:13 pm
Wow…the news gets more & more interesting. As a kicker/punter throughout my high school years, I follow them more than most fans do. It’s been GREAT to watch #1 kick for my Broncos the past 16 years. His professionalism and late-game “clutchness” (is that a word?) made him one of my favorite all-time Broncos.
Denver’s front office, I really hope you have a “plan B” that’s 80% of our departed “plan A”. Wow…like I said, it gets more and more interesting to be a diehard blue & orange fan…
Happy Easter weekend, everyone - HE IS RISEN!
March 21st, 2008 at 4:26 pm
Yes, Elam is gone to his home state of Georgia. It’s sad to see him go being the calibur of player that he is; such a clutch player. My opinion and suggestion would be to pick up Rob Bironas who, as far as I have heard, hasn’t been signed yet. I don’t understand why since he kicked 80% of his field goals of 50+ yards. As for Myers, the topic of the blog, I don’t miss him. The season he started all the games was probably the worst the Broncos has had to face in a long time. Runningbacks having a hard time to find a hole due to the fact that there weren’t many. Cutler’s arm strength has had few oppurtunities to grow on the deep ball due to too much pressure. Is all of that solely Myers fault? Of course not, but something different had to happen. I applaud Shannahan for not staying stagnant. Use the draft and free agency (ie. like how the Broncos signed former Chiefs center Wiegmann) to better future performance.
March 21st, 2008 at 5:15 pm
i take back my previous statement at the top of the blog about haveing faith some1 needs to knock some sence in to shanny befor he sellfs off the whole team.
March 21st, 2008 at 5:47 pm
Along with most others I hate to see Elam go. He was a big part of the glory years. But then I hated to see Jim Turner go too and you have to admit that $4mm this year and $9mm over four is pretty damn spendy for a guy who costs you a roster spot because he can’t kick off.
samparnell - is there a kicker available in the draft? Perhaps someone we can pick up with the Myers pick in the 6th? Just kidding about Provda. That is what I call the local rag.
March 21st, 2008 at 5:51 pm
So,
Andrew Mason got the axe. When is someone gonna start updating the website?

I officially hate Mike Shanahan after losing Elam. Pay the Man he is a future hall of Famer and you pay him: how STUPID CAN YOU BE. I am tired of this crap. Lets get rid of this jerk. I am tired of his SMUG attitude because he thinks he is KING SHANAHAN! He really is the court Jester… a joke.
March 21st, 2008 at 6:36 pm
Dearest blog bros & sisters:
Does the Wiegmann signing mean Nalen and Hamilton aren’t as solid as they would like to be heading into the ‘08 season? As far as Elam goes, Bolen doesn’t want to match what another team will pay and maybe that’s right from a management point of view, but it sucks for the fans. Fortunately, it isn’t necessary to draft one. Bring in half a dozen free agent kickers and the same number of punters and have kick-o-rama. It’ll be an adventure. No more going to the bathroom when PAT/FG team lines up. Tricky thing about kickers is: can one guy do it all? seldom true; does the same guy kickoff and kick PAT/FG? the punter and kickoff guy need to be able to tackle; punters need to be able to kick out-of-bounds or at least toward the sidelines (Sauerbrun in Chicago!); on the other hand when kicking off kickers should never kick it out-of-bounds; how can you kick a 40 yd. FG and then kick it out-of-bounds on a kickoff? on the other hand, you should be able to kick the ball right in the area of the numbers or what in high school would be between the hashmarks and the numbers (jaws); from a roster point of view you have one LS (Leach-one of the best), one place kicker (who should be able to punt), one punter (who should be able to kick off), that’s three roster spots leaving 25 each for O & D; and, every guy on the team who has ever kicked should kick for the ST coaches to find out if you have a backup LB, FB or TE who can kickoff and go down and make a hit. That would be sweet! As for specific guys, don’t forget that both PK and P are really open right now. Jeremy Ito from Rutgers and John Sullivan from UNM could be CFAs. Sullivan’s too light & little to tackle in the NFL which is why it would be sooo cool to discover that you have SS, for example, who can kickoff and then go down and lay somebody out. You know-FSU!

P.S. Our next blogmaster will be Aziz from New Delhi.
March 21st, 2008 at 6:43 pm
Only one guy this year really sticks out to me as a possible sleeper for either CFA or a sixth rounder and that is Danny Woodhead out of Chadron State. Put up serious numbers at his pro day for you numbers guys and even better stats as a player. 4.38 40, 38 in vert, 4.2 shuttle, 7.06 cone, but the best stat I like is his mosh rushing yards all time 7,963 by a colligiate player. Anybody say TD without the injury history!
March 21st, 2008 at 6:52 pm
Also just a little tid bit for you shanny haters when he first got here he controlled every aspect of the rebuilding to champions, much like the heralded great so great tuna all hail the tuna, but nobody questions him, but back on subject Shanny since winning those superbowls did what all good coaches do and did delegate some responsibility, however little you all think it was, the simplest things can cause implosions, flat out Shanny is not the one who llikes numbers guys he likes gusty play it out fight punch em in the mouth football players. That Air force numbers cruncher aka Sundquist was. I was in the military and know from experience nobody loves numbers over proven performance more than uncle sam and his brainwashed flunkies.
March 21st, 2008 at 8:18 pm
I hope Coop will be blogging more now that Mason is gone. He still is all orange and blue and tells it like it is, a real great guy. Personally, I have been a big Elam fan for 16(?) years but it was time for him to move on. Hope he will be inducted into the Bronco ring of fame when he retires because if anyone deserves it , he does. Maybe we don’t have to rely on kicking last minute field goals if we can carry that extra player on the roster and don’t have to have a kick off specialist. I don’t think we would have lost Hixon to the Giants if we didn’t have to carry an extra kicker. Between that and the money, it was time for a change, the team has a lot of needs and a lot of draft picks to sign. Best of luck to one of the greatest Broncos ever.
March 22nd, 2008 at 9:53 am
“My suggestion is to pick up Rod Baronis” !!!????? What have you been smoking. We’re to cheap to sign Elam, one of the better kickers in the league. What makes you think the Broncos would be willing to spend even more money on Baronis who’s currently the best kicker in the game???? Experienced kicker available are Morton Anderson of the Falcons (He’s at least 45) and Jeff Willkins of the Rams. Not to mention the Seahawks are looking to replacce their kicker who signed a long term contract with the Rams. Of the six college kickers the Sport News breaks down, they say five of them need to speed up their footwork.!!!!???? The Broncos kicking game is in real trouble unless they stumble on to a good one.
March 22nd, 2008 at 12:35 pm
Oh woe is us our kicker is gone. So darned what. Elam’s leg strength was declining and our team is moving towards the future. Nalen will be allowed to finish his career as here as long as he’s willing to take age pay cut’s or retire within the next couple of years otherwise the remnant’s left of a decade old rememberance of glory are going by the by for newer versions. Denver needs to move on and start embracing the new kids on the block and stop running new player’s out of town because there not as good as the once was guys.
March 22nd, 2008 at 2:21 pm
Mike Shannahan is a keeper. the broncos and fans like him too much, and it is definitely not a bad thing to keep him. he has a great philophisy but hasn’t had the talented coordinators to execute it.
As for Elam I am upset that he left too but everyone just has to grow a pair and get over it.
I’m guessing everyone has evaded the topic of the draft. I’ll leave it there.
That’s what I gotta say.
March 22nd, 2008 at 2:28 pm
the reason we probably are to cheap to get Elam back is that he is a 15 year vet….were not going to pay somebody that money!!!! i do agree with the other guy t that said we should get baronis…..he is young and has a great leg…in denver he could plast that ball out of the endzone and would be money from anything over 55 till what 70 the dude has a great leg…better than elams ever was….plus if we do invest in ROB he could be in place for the next 12 years or so…thats why u invest in rob and not in jason…what are u smokin
March 22nd, 2008 at 4:46 pm
is “plast” even a word?
and anyway wouldn’t ROB Bironas want more money than Jason Elam? He has broken the record for FGs in a game so he probably feels extra special, but that just shows how much the titans suck. and another thing, can he tackle????????? maybe then he could kickoff instead of someone else. maybe the broncos should have gotten Josh Brown. he can tackle. he owned Devin Hester.
March 22nd, 2008 at 6:36 pm
My philosiphy is that ramboshithefan meant blast when he typed plast. Josh Brown, eh… So, like is ROB his first name? Who spells his first name all in caps? GOD? Is that first, last or both?…or Grace Slick’s son? Kick-o-rama is coming…, or Olindo Mares.
March 22nd, 2008 at 6:37 pm
ramboskithefan?
March 23rd, 2008 at 7:43 am
So the Broncos are bringing in Olindo Mare to take Elams place. What a perfect choice. He was so bad the last two years he played that he was cut in the midst of the secopnd year. But, don’t worry. He’s also trying out for the Seahawks. How about bringing in someone who actually played last year and played fairly well, not someone who’s been out of the game for a year or two?
March 23rd, 2008 at 12:22 pm
Couple of things I noticed is that Myers wasnt exactly trade. He was a restricted FA and denver didnt mach Houstons offer. Plus Elam went home to Atlanta, this is were he is from. I dont think Shanny had much to do with that. He is a hall of famer (fingurs crossed) but if he wants to go home that ant Shannies fault.
Denver needs a big DT to push the line and someone to compete at ML, other then that we need another WR and a back that can carry the load. The ones we got will rotate through because they will be hurt every other game. They dont need to draft someone to be instant seccuss they need good decent players that will be around for years to come.
March 23rd, 2008 at 12:39 pm
I think this is a good move trading myers because i think we will start ryan harris next year at right tackle and i think we are going after chris williams and in the second round if you keep your fingers crossed brandon albert might still be around so you fill three positions. There are three good kickers in the draft and as much as i hate for denver having to waste a draft pick on a kicker it could work. Hopefully we go after Dechard choice he looks like a smart player who reminds me alot of terrel davis. Travis Henry needs to be released or traded he is an injury prone player who is productive when healthy but when will that be. A speed WR would really help cutler and a run stuffing DT and MLB and denver is a threat in the west this year. AND HELL NO SHANNAHAN DONT SIGN ORLINDO MARE.
March 23rd, 2008 at 3:33 pm
Doubt if Branden Albert will be available in the 2nd (#42). Broncos don’t have a 3rd and Tashard Choice will be gone by then. Either of those would be way cool, though, and I agree w/Chris Williams. Denver could probably get DTs Trevor Laws, ND in the 2nd and Frank Okam, Texas in the 5th (#140). A pretty good MLB who might be there in the 6th (#177) is Ben Moffitt, SFla. Don’t forget about a FB. Broncos don’t have a real one, although they do use Graham as an H-back. Several good FBs will be available in the later rounds when the Broncos have a lot of picks. Owen Schmitt might still be there at #130. I guess the Broncos might draft a kicker and/or a punter. An interesting WR who might be there in the 4th is Dexter Jackson from App.St. If you think another OL is needed, Jeremy Zuttah, Rutgers might be there at #115. He is very strong, fast and versatile and can play any OL spot like Shanahan says Chris Kuper can. BroncoBoy2012 has a different approach calling for trading down and acquiring a 3rd (Cowboys?). Check way up above for his scenario and mine, too, in what is becoming a very long series of entries. BroncoBoy, your approach is viable and you have identified some good players (Cousins, Balmer, Hills, etc.). I wonder how long this blog will last?
March 23rd, 2008 at 3:45 pm
P.S. BroncoBoy, check Andrew Mason’s last entry above (way at the top of this). He seems to think the Broncos have two picks in the 7th. Cool, huh?
March 23rd, 2008 at 3:51 pm
Apparently some “experts” are thinking the Broncos might pick Devin Thomas WR Mich.St. in the 1st. What would you guys think about that?
March 23rd, 2008 at 8:46 pm
Hey has anyone heard about Brandon Marshal having to get stitches in his arm? he hurt himself at his home
