Two for Thursday: Broncos Also Sign WR Shepherd

March 6th, 2008 - 5:30pm by Andrew

Boy, this is a busy day …

Less than two hours after announcing the signing of one former Detroit Lion, Denver brought another one-time Lion aboard, signing wide receiver Edell Shepherd to a contract.

Terms were not disclosed.

Shepherd was in Lions camp last year before being waived on Aug. 28. He spent the subsequent season out football.

Prior to that short Motown stint, he’d spent the 2006 season with the Houston Texans after playing three years for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

While Shepherd has 13 catches for 163 yards and a touchdown on offense, most of his on-field value the last three years has come as a returner. In 2005, he returned 20 kickoffs for 414 yards — an average of 20.7 yards per runback. A year later in Houston, he improved his kickoff average to 23.2 yards on 17 returns, but fumbled twice.

Shepherd also has three punt returns for 24 yards — an 8.0-yard average. All of his NFL punt returns came in 2006 with Houston.

might as well rename the team the motown broncos lol

first we raid the Browns for their d-lineman….

and now we’re taking Lions like crazy…Bly,Bailey,Shepperd…

I am a little confused by this signing. Like I have said before, I am willing to give anyone a chance, but if he was so great and the Broncos wanted him, why did he spend last year out of football? Call me cynical, but if we got him for returns, his numbers look VERY average. Maybe I missed something on this guy.

  4. BroncoBoy2012 says:

His numbers may be average but no one had heard of Glenn Martinez and look how well he did.

  5. Dr. Doom says:

At this point I dont care whos returning kicks and punts as long as they don’t turn the ball over and they get good yardage

  6. dwillfoeveh says:

BroncoBoy Martinez is a bum fo real

  7. NxtYrNvrArrives says:

Well, all I can say is here’s to another WR. I predicted this would happen and that Denver would bring some competition for Colbert and that’s what happened. I still think Denver might get a WR later on in the draft, though.

  8. WAbronc says:

You are right BroncoBoy. What was I thinking. Kick Return (Martinez) 15 returns for 330 yrds (22yrd avg), 1 fumble, 0 td. Punt return 14 return for 157 (11.2 avg), 2 fumbles, 1 td. Wow. You were right. Not that all the blame is his though, it is not fair to expect him to get away from the ENTIRE other team. A block (or 6) could really help his avg. Maybe we should train our special teams to block. Now THERE is an idea.

  9. BroncoFreak08 says:

Glenn Martinez???? He didn’t do anything all year except 1 punt return for a TD. Martinez is a horrible WR. But anywayz, I don’t know who this guy is but I’m rooting for him, We do need a good Kick Returner. He will probably be the 4th or 6th option on the team for WR. I hope he does well though and proved me wrong.

  10. WAbronc says:

I would love to eat my words. I would love for this guy to be great. Or Martinez. That would be great too. I just don’t see it happening though. Then again, we could have Hester back there and it doesn’t mean squat if we can’t block for him.

  11. RSH says:

Denver needs to get McCree, that would be huge then the Broncos can address the rest of their needs via the draft especially in getting O-line help and a stud DT.

  12. BradJamesBroncoFan says:

True fans know about Edell Shepherd. I believe it was in the 2005 playoffs when the Buccaneers hosted the Redskins. Edell was screwed out of a touchdown for some obscure reason, but I believe he can excel if he gets rid of his fumbleitis. That’s all I’ve got. Marlon McCree would be good but he also had the “dropsies,” in previous postseasons, 2006 for him.

  13. MileHighDNVR says:

I like the Facts the Bailey Brothers will be United as Broncos may stir each other up to do even better while playing!

  14. C2 says:

I agree with RSH. Getting McCree would be good cause then we could use the draft to strengthen are o-line and d-line. There doesnt really seem to be a good lineman on the free agent market right now anyway. if there is your gonna have to overpay to get him.

  15. WAbronc says:

There are a couple of goo free agent linemen. The fact is that they will probably command more money than we are willing to give them. There is Olivea, formerly of the Chargers. There is Scott, formerly of the Colts, and Sean Locklear of the ‘Hawks. Mcree would be fine, but I wish they sould have gone after someone like Wilson from the Pats. He is a proven player that still has a lot to contribute. In other news I just read that we are bringing in Roye, DT formerly of the Browns. That would be fine, except he is 35. The last thing we need is another lineman running tripping over his walker and oxygen hose on his way out to the field.

  16. BroncoBoy1993 says:

i still say we put andre hall to return.

  17. vegasbronco42 says:

I doubt it will ever happen, but does everyone think B Marshall and Larry Fitzgerald would be able to play well together? I keep seeing that AZ might have to trade or even release him because of his salary. He would probably be way too expensive to bring in, but think of Marshall, Fitzgerald, Stokley as the WR corps! The next priority absolutely has to be Jake Scott, though.

  18. orah garst says:

hey, somebody give are new defensive cordinator a note! We have talent on d. BUT! YOU MUST BE CREATIVE AND BLITZ!!!!!!! anybody see what the giants did to the patriots? oh and you could argue, sure they have a killer line, but I give the victory to the d. cordinator! oh yeah, draft some DTs and some Safetys! gosh dang haha! and a fast wr. lata- what do you think? is this draft deep at DT??? and bob sander like safteys in this draft? some one PLEASE let me know! ight, lata-

  19. Thorpebroncofan says:

I think we are forgeting one key Position we need to fill. FB. If we want to get back to running the ball the way we use to we need a FB. It would be great if he had hands and could be an option out of the backfield.
I think a little Brotherly bet would be in order. Who gets the most tackles next fall or something along those lines. Loser donates to the winners favorite charity. Go Bailey Brothers, I can’t wait to see you in action.
So far a good offseason, I’m looking forward to the draft.

  20. vegasbronco42 says:

I don’t know about Shaun Alexander. He looked horrible this past season, and there were games where it did not look like he was running hard at all. I think we need to find a dynamic, do it all, young back. I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again, Mendenhall looks mighty good at 12…….

  21. WAbronc says:

Doom– Maybe it is because I am up in WA that I hopd certain opinions about Alexander. 1) He is on the dowside of his career. 2) He has a habit of lying about the severity of injuries to get back on the field early, which only worsens them. 3) Although he has one of the sickest cuts in football, he goes down on first contact. Every time. That is why they stopped using him on 3rd and short. 4) He is a horrible role model on the field. From what his fellow players have said his practice habits are deplorable, and he has a holyer than thou complex. In fact after he won his award it was not unheard of for him to show up to a full pads practice, more than an hour late, in shorts.

It is also believed that (as said by some former players) that he was a huge point of contention between Holmgren and management. Coach wanted to keep Hutchinson. But “management” could not justify paying a LT (the top LT in the league in fact) when they had a bright shiny runningback.

  22. WAbronc says:

Amen vegasbronco42. I still like at 12 Conners too.

  23. Jack-O-Lantern says:

Thorpebroncofan, I totally agree with you on needing a true FB. If we can get the word out to Shannahan I think it is an excellent idea. We need a great run blocker. Maybe someone in the likes of Owen Schmitt? If he is there for us to pick up we better nab him. We could have a very strong running game with this guy like we did in the past when we had a true FB.

    Gotta get Owen Schmitt…..

  24. samparnell says:

    WAbronc,
I agree with you about special teams. When are those boneheads going to run their lanes and learn to block and tackle? The Broncos lost a promising returner/wide receiver (Hixon) because ST made him look bad.

  25. sess44 says:

This is a league where anyone can be anyone. A Wes Welker can be cut in San Diego to make room for a QB or Derek Anderson can watch himself get cut by the Ravens. Martinez is a good example and Shepherd could be someone else to add his name to that list.

  26. vegasbronco42 says:

The Post is reporting the Broncs have signed Marquand McDaniel. I personally would have preferred McCree, but I’m all for giving him a chance.

  27. Bronco's Fan 89 says:

Im Going to say this AGAIN all of these little recievers are lackluster at best yes everyone deserves a chance WE NEED A BURNER WIDEOUT AND NEITHER SHEPPARD OR COLBERT ARE NOT DRAFT DESHAUN JACKSON BURNER OUT OF CAL!!!!! COME ON SHANNY

  28. b4life says:

Why would you pay big bucks to a kid who only weighs 160something and is short. We dont need any wideouts right now. Your saying Martinez is a bumb but you could have said the same about domonique hixon he got cut signed with the giants and was a great returner. We can set up the lanes for good returners. Like i heard someone say we could have devin hester back there but if we cant block we might as well have Sam Adams returning the ball. I think we go after the left tackle from vanderbuilt smart and athletic fits the denver mold of small tackle and draft a dt late. Brandon Marshall was a forth round pick and he turned out to be our franchise WR so we can adress the WR position in later rounds. RB we should draft Deshard Choice he is a smart shify guy who could fit our scheme well and he shouldnt be gone untill the forth or fith round. If need speed you can get that in later rounds. Chad Johnson was a 2nd round pick and so was tory holt we dont need to draft high for a Wr. Glenn martinez by the way is an excellent route runner and has pretty good hands.

  29. shelbo bronco says:

blah, i think we should still draft a defensive tackle in the top two rounds, maybe even trade down in the first with dallas if mcfadden is still ava. but he wont be. maybe if he is though jerry would give up his first rounders for our 12th…jus a thought. but we still need help at DT and WR. if everybody on the oline comes back healthy were set there we only allowed like twenty somethin sacks and still had almost 1800 yards rushin, so im not too worried there.. laterz

  30. peterg says:

Wait til this coming year. B. Marsh is on all the radar screens now. He can run routes, get YAC, and even run a good deep route. He has the potential to Hall o’ Fame material. But if we don’t get someone on the other side he is going to be doubled every down because we have zilch opposite of him. A bunch of average cannon fodder. The slot machine is a great 3 reciever, but we have to get the safeties to fall back on the #2 or B. Marsh and Stokely will be smothered and won’t get that steller YAC yardage they got this year.
