Boss Bailey Now a Bronco

Boss Bailey is a Bronco, officially. The team announced at 3:36 p.m. MST on Thursday that the team had signed the unrestricted free agent linebacker — and younger brother of All-Pro cornerback Champ Bailey.

NFL.com first reported that the Broncos had agreed to terms with Boss Bailey on Thursday afternoon.

Boss Bailey has traversed one of the more inspirational paths in recent NFL annals. He overcame two torn knee ligaments just to make it into pro football; he tore a left-knee ligament in high school and one in his right knee during his time at the University of Georgia. He also missed the entire 2004 season with torn meniscus in his right knee, but recovered fully.

He amassed 118 tackles in the last two seasons for the Detroit Lions while only missing one game in that time.

The signing makes the Baileys the third set of siblings concurrently on a Broncos roster, following in the footsteps of Eldon and William Danenhauer — together for four games in 1960 — and Doug and Dave Widell, who shared a locker room from 1990-92.

While William Danenhauer only had a four-game stint, Eldon played six seasons and was an All-American Football League selection. The Widells’ careers had less divergent trajectories; Doug was also with the Broncos in 1989, while Dave remained with the club in 1993 and 1994.

Albert and Paul Carmichael were both on the Broncos during their formative years, but their tenures were four seasons apart; Albert was with the team in 1960 and 1961, while Paul played three games in 1965. Both were halfbacks.

Discuss below, and until next time, vaya con Dios.

Welcome to Denver Boss. We are glad to have you.

  2. BroncoBoy2012 Says:

I called it. Look at most of my previous comments b4 Denver even talked to Boss. I said they should get him and they did.

    CALLED IT!!!!!

  3. rev79 Says:

I’m glad we got this done. Now awaiting word of Marlin McCree…

  4. saucy Says:

they should have waited like five minutes and would’ve had a chance at Takeo Spikes…but Boss will be good for our team as the Bailey Bros. will push each other to the extreme

  5. saucy Says:

yes! I am crossing my fingers for McCree!

  6. samparnell Says:

Looks like the LB Corps is rebuilt. Probably should draft a LB late or get some CFAs and keep one or two on the practice squad.

  7. Broncosfanatic4 Says:

Great move for Denver having a linebacker and a corner on the strong side that have trust for each other like that allow both of them to be a force on our defense cause they’ll both take more chances as the other will always have the others back, nothing works better than comraderie and competition to breed winners in a locker room.

  8. broncosrule20 Says:

YES! great job signing Boss, now we just have to wait for McCree

  9. jonahsilas Says:

    Hey Mason –

Any sense on management interest in Husain Abdullah? He seems like a playmaker, upstanding and athletic guy in his brother’s mold, plus seems like with some tutelage from Lynch and weight training we could be our future SS. Plus he is not projected to go early.

Could the Broncos march out two sets of brothers on D?

  10. rst08tierney Says:

Takeo is over 30 and has MAJOR injuries. Boss is younger and has not been hurt major since 2004. Great move broncos! Welcome to the Mile High City Boss

  11. Dr. Doom Says:

Sweet, with DJ and Boss on the outside it will be hard for even the fastest runners to get to the outside and make plays outside the tackle box. Also if we start Koutouvides in the middle that gives us a great run stuffing middle linebacker.
I know this is a bit premature but Im starting to get excited for the upcoming season!!!

  12. Dr. Doom Says:

Also, Takeo Spikes cannot and does not like to play the strong side. He only plays the weak side and DJ is a WAY better weakside linebacker than Spikes.

  13. Dekreybroncofan Says:

Spikes would have been cool, but now we dont have to spend our first round pick on OLB like NFL.COM reported. They also said Shanny hasnt had any good drafts for a while, and well I didnt think dude was a very crediable source after that. Shanny is doing great! Cutler, Marshal, Elvis and Tony all in one year. Then Jarvis, Harris, and Tomas the next year! Plus you know there is a draft pick from last year that im not thinking of right now that will show some talnt next year. Plus the free agent running back’s Bell, Selvin, and Hall in one year. Still the top concern’s to me are DT/WR/S(Sorry John) just thinking of next year. I say we be aggresive and trade’s and get the best DT for the cap space we have and we will rock some socks off.

  14. Dekreybroncofan Says:

    Oh,
I wanted to ad that the dude on NFL.COM’s mock draft didnt even have Ellis in the first round LOL. If he falls to us we need to pick him up! If not I think we need to go with the best player available no matter what position other than running back. I think Ryan Claddy would be great or we need to trade back in the draft and get a guy by the name of Kenny Phillips. If we could trade first rounds with somone in the 20’s that are fishing a DT we would be able to still get Kenny most likely, and then “Bring the pain” to rivers!

  15. Dekreybroncofan Says:

To the subject of the post. I hope Champ can bring out the competitive nature of his brother because if we do we just had a great pick up! Go BOSS.

  16. galsinsuite100 Says:

    Will Boss be blogging?

  17. mstarnes9999 Says:

Great news! Boss and DJ on the outside will be great! Now we just need to stuff the middle with a solid DT. Great move Coach and Ted!!

  18. Lynchifier09 Says:

heck yeah. This is a great addition!

  19. berlownacyo7s Says:

“Also if we start Koutouvides in the middle that gives us a great run stuffing middle linebacker.” - Dr. Doom.

sure the outside position is now set, but a “great run stuffing mlb”? We don’t even know if this niko guy is starting material. All we know is that he’s a “special team ace”. Why is everyone kissing the ground at this guy’s feet?

  20. nickspops Says:

I like the Bailey pick up, however I still think that the Broncos have to bring back Al. His presence in the locker room alone will do wonders for this team. He would provide depth in the middle which we really need even with Koutouvides. The Broncos owe it to Al for all the years he gave us! BRING BACK AL!

  21. TU_HurricaneDB Says:

If we can get DJ at WLB and Boss at SLB then select Curtis Lofton (Big 12 defensive Player of the Year) and put him at Mike our LB corp will look pretty good. I know DJ tackles and Lofton was a tackling machine at OU, add in speed from Boss and I think were good at LB for this year.

Now if only we can pray for Ellis or Dorsey to drop to 12 we’ll have a pretty tough front 7 if we can get Moss and Thomas to produce (as long as Thomas neither gets kicked off the team nor goes to jail).

  22. vegasbronco42 Says:

I know everyone is excited about Niko, and I hope he turns out to be starting material, but I will again voice my hope for the Broncs to draft Beau Bell from UNLV sometime after the 3rd round. I’m telling you, the guy is an animal… I like the addition of Boss Bailey, I hope he is inspired by playing with his big brother…..

  23. gleaverman Says:

    nickspops,

I think Big Al is done. Have we heard anything about him after his visit to the Lions a few weeks ago? Nope. Nothing. And during this free agency period, have we once heard his name mentioned? Nope. Not once.

I hate to say this as much as anyone, but I think Al’s neck injury has ended his brilliant career. I don’t think he can pass a physical, even though his doctor has cleared him to play. I’m not trying to be the negative one here, but it’s time for Bronco Land to move on. This is a new team. We should be supporting the players we have, and stop living in the past.

  24. no-pseudo-fan Says:

I am happy about this signing. We have address our LB issues without breaking the bank.

Also, I would like to be the first to say, “Forget Tony Danza, he’s the BOSS.”

  25. #27HitsOkoye Says:

“sure the outside position is now set, but a “great run stuffing mlb”? We don’t even know if this niko guy is starting material. All we know is that he’s a “special team ace”. Why is everyone kissing the ground at this guy’s feet?” - berlownacyo7s

The reason people are giving him props is that he is a savage on the field playing with complete reckless abandon and killing ball carriers on special teams. The only reason that we haven’t seen him is that Lofa Tatupu is starting in Seattle. He is a natural middle linebacker and is fast enough to cover the fastest TEs over the middle and on slants.

Boss is a great pick up. He brings experience to a lacking strong side. We can have the #1 LB corp this year if we can avoid injuries.

  26. BroncosFan973 Says:

We trade Henry, McKinley and a fourth to the Bears for tommie Harris, I doubt it would work, but with his hamstring injuries and the bears prolems at runnning back they might do it. But that is wishful thinking that would never happen. More likely is that we use henry to change or fourth to a third and we draft a DT, we sign Eugene wilson, draft Ryan Clady, and Limas sweed (1st and second round respectively). I don’t understand it but sweed is supposed to drop that far, he would be a great compliment to Breakout Brandon

  27. champrox24 Says:

    YAYAYAYAYAYAYAYAYAYAYAYAYAYAYAYAYAYAYAYAYAYAYAY!!

    YAY!

  28. Dr. Doom Says:

Niko may not be starting material right away but if you look at his play he still stuffs the run pretty well. I remember watching Purdue and Northern Illinois when him and Michael Turner were in college. In that game NI had thee redzone attempts inside the two and Run turner was handed the ball he went nowhere. The final score of that games was 27-9 Purdue over Northern Illinois. Also turner had 19 yards on 14 attempts and Niko had 9 solo tackles. Also when Seattle played the Steelers in the superbowl Niko had three takles for losses

  29. #27HitsOkoye Says:

Glenn Martinez and that kid from Carolina are going to be what we need to complement Brandon. The area that we need to beef up is the secondary. We have Lynch for just 1 more year. He can help groom a new DB and leave us in a good position going into NEXT YEAR’s draft.

  30. DBronc15 Says:

Great signing!!! We can now possibly sign Jake Scott from Indy then we can focus on the draft and target one of the OT’s or a WR like Limas Sweed!!!! I’m from the Austin area and I’d love to see this beast in a Devner uniform next season!! He’s gonna be WAAAAAYYYY better than Desean Jackson whom everybody keeps mentioning for some reason. That guy weighs less than most high school WR’s. There should be a weight minimum to play in the NFL for safety reasons. He’s too small. LIMAS SWEED!!! Thats who we should be focusing our first pick on!!!! Watch his highlights on youtube if you don’t know bout him.

  31. DBronc15 Says:

LOL just read BroncosFan973 comment bout Limas Sweed. So i’m not the only one drooling over the thought of Marshall and Sweed on the same team.

  32. Dave77 Says:

That what we need FAMILY! Its more then just playing football its a family! 2 Baileys on one team! AWESOME!!!!!!!

  33. oneeye27 Says:

I hope this is good for the team!!

  34. broncosfanscott Says:

I am glad we finally signed him. I can see them both puching each other and the chemistry between the both of them is a big plus on defense.

    Welcome to the Broncos Boss!

  35. drunk bronco Says:

I so Happy…Thx Shanny and WELCOME to DENVER BOSS…

  36. Bronco_Fan79 Says:

Good sign Broncos!! Hopefully we can pickup some youth at the Safety Position. And our O-Line gets healthy and we should be good to go.

I would like to see an Al Wilson type player in the middle however. Hopefully this Niko can step up and do the job.

  37. 07elway Says:

This is really great news!! I must say it will be pretty cool have brothers on the team and fierce set at that!!!! So far the offseason is going pretty well I’d say but I have a big question for you Mason.

What’s going on with Jason Elam? Please don’t tell me they’re going to let him go or that he’s thinking about retiring. And if the Broncos are wanting to keep him and he wants to stay… why are they waiting so long to re-sign him? I’m worried that he’s gonna go but I can’t imagine that the Broncos would just let him walk away. He’s only given us 15 incredible years… what’s going on with this situation? If you, Mason, or anyone can PLEASE give me an answer an peace of mind that would be so appreciated. I’m sure I’m not the only one wondering what’s going on with this but I haven’t read anywhere on here about him staying or going… it’s really bothering me. Thanks for all the updates Mason, you’re awesome.

    GO BRONCOS!!!!!!!

  38. Denverelway Says:

y is ever one so excited bout nikko. who the heck is nikko. BRING AL BACK IF TED AND MIKE ARE READING THIS PLZ BRING AL BACK

  39. 07elway Says:

Oh, and how could I forget to properly welcome our newest. Welcome to Denver Boss!!!! Can’t wait to see you in action. Sorry for the double post.

  40. AdamBroncos Says:

So it doesn’t get repetetive, “Welcome to Mile High”. Awesome addition to the team. As soon as I heard he was available as a FA, I said we should take him. Then after seeing Hussain Abdullah, I think we should snag him up as well. I had alot of questions as to what Shannahan was doing with his time during the free agency. Now I see again, there is a method behind the madness. Things are starting to look alot better here in Denver. The only other thing I wish would have happened, I wanted Rod to come back as our recievers coach. Im sure he will be showing his face around from time to time, but imagine the possibilities from Marshall with Rod coaching him all the way. It gives me chill bumps…

  41. Denverelway Says:

we need help on the o-line with matt retiring and montrae gone we need to pick up a big guy on the end. gosh i wish we could have picked up alan faneca

  42. Hardcore Bronco Babe Says:

I’m so happy that Boss Bailey is now a Bronco. Champ Bailey has said how much he would like to be on the same team with his brother and now that has become reality in Denver. This is a positive step that should give the team some momentum going into the coming season. Welcome to the Denver Broncos Boss Bailey!

  43. diehard fan Says:

awsome, need to get a stud d-lineman. welcome BOSS

  44. bestinthewest24 Says:

    Awesome, the Bailey Brothers!

  45. dwillfoeveh Says:

Hell yeah no Al needs to come back and Marlin Mcree is next win finnin to stuff the run this year no draft an receiver to handle kick returns

  46. broncos20 Says:

way better den AWESOME!!!!!!!!!!….this is GREAT addition….
way to spent money wisely Shanahan…well done refraining from trying to break the bank on this FA……and for those who still hav doubts about Niko….jst take a look at Tampa’s Barret Ruud?u guys ever heard of him before this season,,not much,,,but correct me if i’m wrong, he was a tackling machine leading all tackles for the first 5-6 weeks till other teams started strategizing against them,,hopefully Niko can do the same..heck,,if he can run in the open field and tackle a returner,,he can run around and cover a TE in the slant too….but still, Dj and Boss on the outside maybe the most athletic OLB combo nxt season…
Lets get Limas Sweed!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!..Marshall and Sweed…thats SWEET!!!!!!!!!!
is Jake Scott still available??he’s losing out in FA so maybe he might not cost too much….

  47. matt203 Says:

great pickup. this years starting linebackers. weakside boss bailey. inside niko koutouvides. and hopefully moving back to strongside DJ williams. The Bailey Bros are gonna dominate. hopefully they can also pick up marlon mccree

  48. getlynched47 Says:

Excellent, he’s gonna be a big boost to our defense

Now the only question is will he play at Weakside or Strongside?

  49. getlynched47 Says:

we also signed a WR by the name of Edell Shepperd… does anyone know who this guy is?

  50. Andrew Says:

    getlynched:

Boss Bailey played strongside linebacker most of the last two seasons, although he did start a few games in the middle in 2006.

As for Edell Shepherd, check out the next blog entry … you might remember him from the near-catch in the end zone for the Bucs late in what became a wild-card loss to the Redskins in January 2006.

  51. Broncofan1088 Says:

Honestly, this signing really excites me and I hope this team will pull together as a unit and push eachother.
I have the strangest feeling that we are going to be trying hard to draft Earl Bennet, imagine him and cutler reunited…

  52. bigvon Says:

GREAT!!!!!! Sign excellent job BOSS is just what we needed.

but on the WR deal we need to draft a WR with our #12 pick if we dont get something better out of FA. Bottom line is Sweed is great but Desean Jackson is better for us. We Need a serious playmer game breaker on Returns as well as recieving and Jackson could provide that for us. Keep in mind that our return game can use help along with the recieving corp.

Frankly at #12 I would be happy to get Sweed; Jackson; Caldwell; or Manningham all our playmakers, that will help Brandon and keep Stokley in the slot where we need him.

I still think we Need to look at Chris Johnson even though we have great RB speed and talent like that doesnt come every day.

I think its time for NEW UNIFORMS also

  53. broncofan7776 Says:

i love this addition.welcome BOSS BAILEY. the linebackers are looking good for 08 GO BRONCOS

  54. HukedOnFonicks Says:

I was a little frustrated at first that Shanny didn’t go for any big name players. Now that we got Boss though i think that we are pretty solid on defense. However, signing McCree or getting a big Defensive tackle would also really really help. They really need to have a good draft this year. I’m thinking either a Wide Receiver or Safety in the first round and then either offensive or defensive linemen in the later rounds. I wouldn’t be surprised if they take a Running Back and a kicker/punter also.

  55. vegasbronco42 Says:

I agree we are set at RB, but I think the team should take a long look at Mendenhall. He looks like a very rare blend of speed and power……

  56. bobcat82 Says:

    whats up

  57. bobcat82 Says:

Great signing,I have just one more for the wish list, if we can make the trade and pay the price for bly, lets do the math and try to sign jared allen away from k.c our line backers are going to so freaking fast, take allen on one side and elvis on the other no one I mean no one is going to run outside and no QB is going to be comfortable in the pocket now is the time to make that move,Eb will be backthat will be a great help in the middle but hey one mans thought

  58. BroncoBoy2012 Says:

I wish all the good DTs wouldn’t have been frachised or there would be about 3 more extremely good DTs in the draft. I guess when the Broncos get Keith Rivers in the first round we will have the BEST linebacking corp in the league. Now only if we could stop the run and we’d have the ORANGE CRUSH 2.
(Den)Miramontes if you’ve read some of my previous comments I’ve already said we need Shane Olivea. And us fans and the Broncos organization are conscience of the team needs. If you’re trying to look smart don’t, as I just said everyone knows what we need and what we need most.

  59. k-n9ne Says:

Hey guy, lets just say Mcfadden last to the 12 pick. Would you consider trading that pick to the cowboys if they are willing to give us both their first round picks. Just a thought. anyway, welcome to Mile high Boss.

  60. BroncoBoy2012 Says:

k-n9ne, no. we need to best defensive player. and we couldn’t get him at number 22, 28 or in a later round.
and someone in the Broncos organization please listen to this:
Can we try to get Atari Bigby? He is a hart hitter that would be a great compliment to John Lynch and next year he could play with Dominique Barber (a guy who the Broncos should draft in the 5th round) next year.

  61. BroncoFreak08 Says:

Awesome Sign… I’m really excited about the defense this year. Boss will definitely help our LB’s out I’m not to familiar with this Niko guy but from the way everyone is talking about him he’s getting me excited too. We should have a way better defense this year and through the draft we will get even better. DJ moving back to his oriiginal position will help out alot. And as for Al as much as I want him back he probably is done. We really need to focus on our OL and DL and S positions in the draft. We are going to have an amazing year this year. We don’t have the toughest schedule so we should to pretty good. Welcome to Denver Boss. Can’t wait to see ya when I go to the Charger VS Bronco game!!!!

  62. BradJamesBroncoFan Says:

We might as well call him Limas Sweet, as it would be sweet for Marshall, Limas and Stokley to be in our receiving core. I think Boss can do a great job but only time will tell. Things are slowly but surely going into motion for the Broncos to be a threat in the AFC!

  63. Broncosfanatic4 Says:

Believe it or not Denver does not need a wr or a safety if they get marlon mcree or an immediate top ten dt this year Cutler will be in his third year and teams will be keying more on him as our running game is and will decline until we replace our offensive or check this trade up a few picks and take darren mcfadden with mcfadden in the back field teams will be forced to focus more on him as well as cutler and our newly emerging pass threat in marshall. flat out we get a stud rb we score tds defense can breath super bowl baby!!!!!!

  64. MileHighDNVR Says:

Nice to have Boss on board, maybe he will become the leader of the defense like Al Wilson was I mean with a name like Boss why not? lol

  65. Vinci Says:

Guys are talking bout this Niko guy like he’s Jonathan Vilma or something?! Keep D.J. in the middle and lets build around him. I would still like to see Jarvis Moss at weakside linebacker, who knows the kid might wind up with 15 sacks for all we know. Boss on the strong side and we’ve reclaimed the fastest LB group.

  66. crherrera Says:

Where is Nate Webster in all of this?

  67. goblin53 Says:

i like what broncosfanatic4 said. i know we have a good rb core right now but what if henry goes down again? i say we trade henry and our first pick to move up a spot or two and take mcfadden. he may be our next TD if we give it a chance and with selvin splitting the carries with him you have two very young studs that will be with cuttler for years to come barring any injurries to either of them. that way we dont have to wonder where our next 1000 yard rusher is coming from each year. this would be an upgrade from henry because of his age and injuries. them we focus on dt with our second pick. what do you guys think?

  68. Denverelway Says:

how old is travis 30, 29 i don’t know but i sure that he not that old

  69. goblin53 Says:

no hes not that old but he gets hurt too much for his age

  70. VATX Says:

I’ve wondered about Webster as well. Isn’t he a more natural MLB? Was he the worst gap-assignment culprit from last season or something?

  71. b4life Says:

Dj has had his best season at MLB he was second in tackles in the nfl just behind the nfl defesive player of the year from san fransico. We have a good player in the middle and if denver moves Dj that would be a big mistake. We need a weak side linebacker like Keith Rivers, but it all starts up front and we need a defesive tackle or a left tackle not a WR we have Glenn Martinez and Brandon Marshall who are great players. Signing Boss was a great pick up and Marlon Mcree would be another great pick up. I say if Ellis or Dorsey (Dorsey is known around as injury prone and might fall to the 12th spot) or that offensive tackle from vanderbuilt is at 12 we pull the trigger. Shanahan better take a OT because we are thing at those positions and not many people know if Ryan Harris will turn out to be the player they think he might be so i would say LOT will be the most important position to denver. Al was a good player but Dj filled the position the best and Al might not have any left in the tank he is an old linebacker who was great but that neck injury left him a different player.

  72. muthy27 Says:

who ever is playing defense, LB’s DT’s, please just knock philip rivers mouth shut!

  73. tomnalen36 Says:

Boss will be fine here probably nothing spectacular but he should be solid. Champ now will be happier than a tornado in a trailer park. DJ will dominate the weak side…the draft will produce a middle backer…Would really have liked to see a trade for Vilma involving Mike bell or henry…one of our many RBs

  74. C2 Says:

Nothing would make me happier than watching the Broncos blitz with Lynch and seeing him do his thing by laying out philip rivers!

  75. oldsouthstander Says:

I understand signing Boss Bailey, but the signing of Sherperd makes no sense. Desperatrely seeking a top notch return man is the only thing that makes any semblance of sense. ???????
Wonder what the cahnces are the Broncos will trade for a later pick along with a second or third rounder. Shanny has done it before.

  76. I_Only_Like_Jay Says:

This just made life a lot easier for their mother.
This is great though, for the team and for them both.

  77. RSH Says:

crherrera: Nate Webster will occasionally make a huge tackle, but usually either misses the tackle or hits a guy really hard without wrapping him up leading to positive yardage and big gains. Yet through it all Webster’s helmet always pops off. That’s where he is in all of this, Webster is not a starter in my opinion and will have to battle keep his roster spot this training camp.

  78. tomnalen36 Says:

Agree Webster = not that good thats hes why we lost to the 49ers two last year when wilson was out with the neck fiasco…We still need a MLB Niko doesnt seem like a fit

  79. BroncoBoy2012 Says:

(Den)Miramontes…sorry for calling you out but it ticks me off when people repeat what’s already said, except a “welcome to the team” or something like that. and there is nothing wrong with getting Keith Rivers because then the Broncos would have a top-notch linebacking corp. and we could get rid of some of those LBs who aren’t performing well. what happened to not calling out fellow fans, hypocrite?
and k-n9ne what I should have said, and should have said nicer was that there is almost no way that Darren McFadden would fall to the 12th pick because some of the first 8 teams need a RB and if they don’t pick him up New England at #7 would just because they like big names.

  80. BroncoBoy2012 Says:

    bickering stops now

  81. Denverelway Says:

i agree with bronco boy i say we just wait and see how travis and selvin turn out

  82. BroncoBoy2012 Says:

if there are plenty of good DTs why can’t we wait until later because there are few good LBs and we still need a weakside guy.
chew on that everyone who laughs at the idea of getting Keith Rivers

  83. BroncoBoy2012 Says:

thank you Denverelway and plus if Travis Henry doesn’t work out, which i kinda doubt he will, we can have a good duo in Young and Hall.

  84. Russ'o Says:

Whats the talk about drafting a linebacker? The Broncos need to get a good pass rusher instead.

  85. Denverelway Says:

no no no no i think we need a o-line men we need to replace matt

  86. m.c. the great Says:

Trading up for mcfadden.. no no goblin 23, youve got it all wrong, its

    TRADE UP FOR DORSEY

We can get a good running back in a later round(jamaal charles), and how is glenn martinez a great player. we still need another wide out, Kenan burton out of kentucky, he’s fast, physical, built, think of greg jennings from green bay, he would be a great add on the second day.

But now that we have invested so much in the LB’s we need to allow them to do their job and sure up that D-line, dumervilles good but moss needs to produce, and the guy out of texas from last year needs to produce, as well. But all in all this is gona have to be mikes best draft to date, if the players pan out, then we gota chance to make the playoff, but if its just a average draft, well be 9-7

And wehenever they decide to pick a LB in the draft we just need to pick the best LB availabe if its a middle linebacker Dj can move outside, if its an outside line backer(Stanford keglar, or kliff avril) than DJ can stay out side

does any one know our exact pick order for the entire draft

  87. m.c. the great Says:

BroncoBoy you got it backwards. This draft is full of OLB/DE hybrid type players two years from now theres gona be a few guys wit shuan phillip type production, and where picked on the second day. But there are only 3 sure guys at DT after that theres a big drop off

  88. G funk Says:

That was a great pick up. Boss has great feet and speed what we were looking for in our lb. Its seems that we all agree on this pick up. I played with my bro and we were always competitive with each other when we were on the field. so I think it will even motivate Champ even more. Great job Broncos.

  89. BroncoBoy2012 Says:

m.c. the great i don’t think i agree. after dan connor, keith rivers, xavier adibi and ali highsmith i don’t think there are many good prospects. at defensive end i agree because chris long, vernon gholston, derek harvey, calais campbell and so on are good athletes. and at DT there are good players too. sedrick ellis, glenn dorsey, pat sims, kentwan balmer, trevor laws, frank okam, and marcus harrison are ALL good prospects it’s just that the first 2 are extremely good. if we can’t get one of those good LBs to compliment d.j. and boss then we wont have a chance to get one this season. in the 2nd round we can get pat sims, trevor laws, frank okam or marcus harrison. that is why i think we should grab keith rivers everyone. so if you think i am dumb READ THIS AGAIN!!!!

  90. 2Bailey4 Says:

Excellent pick-up in Boss, I agree that we need to sign Marlon Mcree. That would be such a huge improvment to our secondary. And in the draft we need a WR,DT, and an RB. Some people may think that we are set at RB. But I for one am not convinced of it. We have Henry who gets injured it seems like every year, Selvin young who had some breakout games but was less than impressive at most times. And Hall, who’s only playing time came when the starters were hurt. And if they don’t sign Elam again then we will need a kicker somewhere in the draft. But I think that of it can be done we need to pick up Mendanhall or Stewart. I’m not to set on Mcfadden, I’m not sure he is the style of RB that would Denver’s scheme.

  91. socalbronco4life Says:

I dont know if any of you evaluate the cap ramifications of signing a McFadden or Dorsey. There is no way…… no way we can afford either of those names we would be lucky to sign a WR in round one. The chances of us signing any big money positions like DE/DT/WR/LT/RB are slim in the first round our best bet is to draft LB or S in the first round. I know your all so excited about our LB core but it still lacks to impress anyone that doesnt bleed orange and blue. The only big impact LB we have is DJ. The others may be solid but they wont be big impact. I surely do not see how some of you are saying that we shouldnt be focused on D to fix the atrocity we fielded last year and called our run D. First round should either go to phillips(he is my pick look at the talent from the canes) or Rivers who ever is on the board if both then the one that has had the most impressive proday and combine. Second round is where we should get a T if we can not get shane olivea for cheap but not likely the gaurd from indy will be to expensive as well. Draft should go in this order.
    rd1: S or LB
    rd2: OT
    rd3: traded gone audios
rd4:(i believe we still have) DT
    rd5:WR
anything else i dont really care but our cap is ugly and even after lynch departs it wont get any better. we need to maybe focus on signing Bmarsh to a longer deal. I am not fond of the idea of having Martinez as a #2 but i wish we would play graham less and play scheffler more.

  92. WAbronc Says:

A safety would be ok, but I am thinking LB. If not Rivers, then Conner. I think that I like this kid even more than Rivers. Just saying that he was a record setter at his university is great. When you consider that it was LINEBACKER U it means quite a bit more. If there is a good lineman on the board though, it would be very tempting. It might not be the “sexy” pick, but it will pay dividends for years to come.

  93. WAbronc Says:

DJ belongs on the outside. Period.

  94. #27HitsOkoye Says:

For those of you posting that we need to draft LBs, please read the title of the blog that you are posting on. WE JUST SPENT ***MILLIONS*** on LBs. We need OL, then S, then DL, then WR, then CB, THEN LBs and RBs. Let Young and Hall mature while Henry takes his lumps. Let Niko and Boss play like they play and get paid how they get paid. Both are great players. Both are very fast. This will assist against the run as we got beat mostly when the RBs ran off tackle. This is the key for success: DJ=Weak OLB, Niko=MLB and Boss=Strong OLB. We see that, we see the playoffs. Guaranteed.

  95. WAbronc Says:

Thats all well and good #27HitsOkoye but what happens if one of them gets hurt? Who fills in? I would rather have 4 starting caliber LB’s (one that could potentially be traded in a couple of years) than 2 LB’s and some guys who are gabbing about that time they made that back hit in 2000. We have a SERIOUS drop off in talent after the first level.

  96. j dub Says:

Great pickup with Boss! What’s with marlon mccree? Is it true we are trying to get L. fitzgerald??

  97. WAbronc Says:

Fitz is inticing, but unlikely. Even assuming that we could afford him, if he were released he has made it known that he would like to play for his home team, the Vikings.

  98. RSH Says:

WAbronc, Winborn showed in 2007 he is more than capable of filling in should one of our starters go down.

  99. WAbronc Says:

He is ok… But he only posted 34 tackles in 14 games. That equates to just under 2.5 per game. To put that into perspective Koutouvides posted 23 tackles in 15 games on SPECIAL TEAMS. I a year that our d line was completely pourus, you would think that he could do better. I am not sure that with the talent in the draft we should have to wait for him to do better.

  100. WAbronc Says:

By comparison Ian Gold (whom everyone was calling for his head) had 72 total tackles in 14 games or just over 5pg. As fans of one of the greatest sports franchises we should not have to settle for mediocrity.

  101. kartelwest Says:

Now that we have Boss, let’s get Spikes so we don’t have to spend a draft pick on defense and we can draft a WR. Our free agent pickups aren’t that motivating.

  102. kartelwest Says:

Imagine. Boss Bailey on one side, Spikes on the other, and DJ Williams in the middle. Scaryyyyyyyyyyyy.

  103. m.c. the great Says:

Broncoboy your right on a technicallity, most of the players that played DE’s in college will not be drafted with teams intending on playing them with thier hands down in the pros theyll be makin the move to OLB.

And about the DT’s glenn and ellis are the surest things in the draft, but they still have holes in their game; when ellis plays undisiplined he dosnt have the talent to make up for it. but is outstanding other wise, and of course dorsey has durability concerns, but I hope 15 other teams (i like the idea of us trading down) think his durability will be an issue and pass on him. and the other DT prospects werent overlly dominant, and picking one of them on the first day would be a reach unless for some reason thier comin off the board fast.

And I dont think kenny phillips is worth a first round pick, he would have a limited impact on the field. he wont be playing in the box thats where Lynch will be, and with our “improvements” at LB we dont need him to cover tight ends or backs and foxworth is good enough in the nickle package so thats definetly a position that can wait till next year, or even in rookie free agency.

And i think RB has to be adressed you can count on henry, and you dont know how long he’s gonna last. And selvin is a good and could be a great back up but i think charles will give us those long break away runs that clinton portis used to make a routine thing.

and i totally agree less grahm more tony this will be his third year, the year most TE’s come into their own so i think he makes grahm expindable and we either trade or cut him before the season starts

And i think we have two picks in the 5th round. and we traded our 3rd and 4th away

  104. blackpajent Says:

    yeah

  105. BroncoBoy2012 Says:

just for anyone who wants to know this, this is the Broncos draft picks:

    12th pick - first round
    42nd pick - second round
    104th pick - fourth round
    115th pick - fourth round
    130th pick - fifth round
    140th pick - fifth round
and then 2 7th round picks

  106. BroncoBoy2012 Says:

I would like Denver to sign Spikes. Someone would just need to smack him upside the head to he knows how good he is and not waste cap room. then we could draft Kenny Philips or someone else in the first round. looks like free agency might help a lot after all. thank you denver for doing something.

  107. WAbronc Says:

We do not need spikes. I believe that he would be another adams. Big waste of a lot of money. Lets take a look at Eugene Wilson from the Pats. Then we don’t have to worry about the secondary at all on draft day or otherwise.

  108. vegasbronco42 Says:

Scheffler needs to show improvement as a blocker before we automatically give him all of graham’s playing time. Denver will be a team built around the run as long as shanahan is here, and we need TEs and WRs who are good blockers……I like Scheffler, but I also think Graham is underappreciated. He didn’t get many catches this year, but it’s not his fault that he had to stay in as a blocker on most of the plays, to try to give JC and our backs more protection..

  109. WAbronc Says:

Graham is one hell of a blocker. Maybe he would be good on special teams…

  110. BLK MAMABA Says:

Boss will be pretty good. but every one knows that we need a DT because last season it was easy for teams to control the game. because we couldnt stop the run.

  111. vegasbronco42 Says:

Good call WA. Graham would be a monster on special teams.

  112. oldsouthstander Says:

JUst saw on NFL Network that Elam is seariously talking to the Chiefs. Wake up Shanny. The Broncos won 7 gamers last year. Elam was responsible to 4 of them. Three milklion a year, maybe a bit high, but there’s no one avialble that even starts to be Jasons equal.

  113. samparnell Says:

    BroncoBoy2012,
Don’t the Broncos still have the 6th round pick? Jimmy Kennedy didn’t make the roster. Wasn’t the trade contingent on him making the team?

  114. m.c. the great Says:

    thanks for the list broncoboy

    here goes another mock draft

    Round 1 Brandon albert.

    Round 2 jamaal charles, RB

    Round 4 Frank okam, DT

round 4 Cliff avril if he’s there, or Shawn Crable, OLB/DE

    Roun 5 Keenan burton, WR/KR.

    Round 5 Marcus Howard, OLB/DE

    Round 7 Tony hills, OT

    Round 7 DeMario Pressley, DT

Rookie free agent pick ups:Kendal langford DT, hampton. Wallace Gillberry DE, Alabama. Dexter jackson WR/KR app st.

  115. WAbronc Says:

No, we do not have a sixth round pick. St. Louis has it. At any rate, about Elam. I wish that we ccould resign him, but if we can’t, it is not the end of the world. He is not the end-all-be-all. Sorry to break it to you, but there are lots of kickers out there that are good. Lets be real. There are over 120 NCAA schools that have kickers. Lets say that 1/4 graduate each year. That makes over 30 kickers a year that are trying to vye for a roster spot on one of 32 teams. A spot that it is not uncommon to see a 35 year old in. I am SURE that there are other kickers out there that can kick a 50 yrd field goal 80% of the time.

  116. WAbronc Says:

Not too bad MC, but 12 is too high for Albert, the most drafts have him late first or early 2nd, and our GM might think thst id too much of a reach with the available talent pool still on the board. I also think that Jackson will not last past round 4. Small school or not, believe me, he is on everyones radar. The only question is what team makes him their “value” pick first?

  117. WAbronc Says:

Here are my picks. Let me start by saying I woul dlove to pick Mendenhal or Conners but….
    1)Ryan Clady OT Boise ST
    2)Trvvor Laws DT Notre Dame
    4)Mike McGlynn OG Pittsburgh
    4)Marcus Griffen FS Texas
    5)Owen Schmitt FB West Virginia
5)Dexter Jackson WR App ST (if avail) or
    Justin Forett RB California
    7)Davonne Bess WR Hawaii

  118. BroncoBoy2012 Says:

I think if the broncos draft any offensive lineman in the first round it should be Ryan Clady, OT from Boise State. I think the Broncos should address tackle before guard so Jay Cutler doesn’t get nailed from behind.

  119. 2Bailey4 Says:

I agree with a lot of you about us seriously needing a DT. That should be our #1 priority. But a lot of you don’t mention anything about an RB. Now Henry is a great starting RB when healthy. But him being healthy comes few and far between. I think that we should consider mendanhall or stewart. Probably stewart. Because he is not picked to high on anyone’s mock drafts. we could trade down and get more picks in the draft and still get stewart. And WA what is this about college kickers making 50 yard feild goals 80% of the time. That’s ridiculous, there are many kickers in today’s NFL that don’t have that good of a percentage from that distance. Now I’m not saying that we absolutly need to resign Elam. But come on.
And I’m not to sure that we are set at LB. I mean before we picked up nikko, I had never heard of him before, and signing TKO would just be a waste of cap space. I can’t remember the last he played 16 games in a season. He is one the most injury prone LB there is still playing. If we were to sign him then we shouldn’t give him more than 2 or 3 mill a year.
If he is still available we should take a look at roosevelt colvin. he was always pretty good in NE. Now I’m not sure if he is available but it couldn’t hurt if he is.

  120. WAbronc Says:

You are right 50 yard feild goals 80% of the time is a bit much, but I was trying to make the point that there are a lot of good, unworking kickers out there. Like the kid that auditioned for us last year. I do not recall his name, but if I remember correctly he was not bad at all. Running back is not a pressing need. If nothing else we can rotate the three we have and still get the job done this year. We need to continue to establish a core of good young players on both sides of the line. Point in case is Barry Sanders. He was great. Both O and D line sucked. Correct me if I am wrong, but his team did NOTHING. It all starts and ends in the trenches.

  121. BroncoBoy2012 Says:

For the people that think DJ should move back to the weakside I can only say this; if DJ is moved to the weakside then the Broncos should draft Curtis Lofton in the 2nd round or someone really good

  122. BroncoBoy2012 Says:

saying that I still stick with my theory of keeping DJ in the middle and getting Keith Rivers to fill in the weakside and Pat Sims in the 2nd round

  123. BroncoBoy2012 Says:

this would be my starting defense if all goes as I plan:

John Lynch Dominique Barber (5th round)

    Roosevelt Colvin/ DJ Boss
    Keith Rivers (1st round)
    Dre Champ
    Elvis Pat Sims Marcus Jarvis/Tim
    (2nd round)

  124. BroncoBoy2012 Says:

whoa that looks messed up… let me make it easier

    FS- John Lynch
SS- Dominique Barber (draft 5th round)
WLB- Roosevelt Colvin/ Keith River (draft 1st round)
    MLB- D.J. Williams
    SLB- Boss Bailey
    CB 1- Champ Bailey
    CB 2- Dre Bly
    DE 1- Elvis Dumervil
    DT 1- Marcus Thomas
DT 2- Pat Sims (draft 2nd round)
DE 2- Jarvis Moss/ Tim Crowder

  125. BroncoBoy2012 Says:

at SS Marcus Griffin not Dominique Barber; Dominique Barber could get picked up in the 7th round or college free agency

  126. BroncoBoy2012 Says:

    here is my draft:

    1st -Keith Rivers, OLB, USC
2nd - Pat Sims, DT, Auburn
4th (1) - Duane Brown, OT, Virginia Tech
    4th (2) - Jeremy Zuttah, OT, Rutgers
    5th (1) - David Roach, S, TCU
5th (2) - Letroy Guion, DT, Florida State
    7th (1) - Jayson Foster, WR/KR, Georgia Souther
    7th (2) - Robert Killebrew, OLB, Texas

and here is my college free agency

    Joe Fields, S, Syracuse
    Arman Shields, WR, Richmond
    Keith Schologan, DT, Central Florida

Marcus Griffin is slow and not very strong. Dominique Barber will be drafted by someone else in the 6th round.

  127. jazzyfrizzle Says:

we signed mccree and manuel at safety, woo hoo!

  128. damon011 Says:

    who is takeo spikes?

  129. #27hitsokoye Says:

We now have the secondary square. We need to focus on the 0 line. And there is no way that we start 4 3rd year less d linemen.

  130. blorange Says:

Everyone is so excited about Boss and rightfully so, but who do you think is sitting in the corner smilling ear to ear? Thats right, DJ Williams. He is going to be an animal this year, joining elite names such as LT, the real LT that is, and theRay Lewis’s.That’s just my opinon. Also let’s not forget about Selvin Young. Look’s to me he has all the traits of someone we here call TD. But that’s just my opinon.

  131. 2Bailey4 Says:

damon011, Takeo Spikes is the former MLB of the Eagles last year and the Bills in previous years. He was a monster back then but then he started getting injured very frequently and is the biggest gamble at the MLB spot in my opinion.

#27hitsokoye, we would not be starting 4 3rd year less D Lineman, unless I’m mistaken we resigned ebenezar ekuban, and we have elvis dumerville, who is emerging as one the best in league over the last couple years. I still think our most pressing need is DT. We have no DT that even compares with most of them out there and that need alone is the main reason we did absolutely nothing last year. Now by signing Mcree and Manuel that definately gives us something to look forward to this next year.

Now WA your right RB isn’t our most pressing need but is a need as far as I’m concerned. We have one great when healthy RB in Henry and two decent RB’s in Young and Hall. But I really don’t think that we can count on them for too much. I mean everyone saw how big of an impact Adrian Peterson had in Minnesota last year, now I’m not saying that any RB in this year’s draft is as good he is. But there are a couple who would make teams scared of the Broncos running game again.

  132. WAbronc Says:

That is true 2Bailey4, but this is such a deep draft for backs, I do not think that we should use a first round pick on one. Especially when there are more pressing needs and supr good talent to fill them.

  133. 2Bailey4 Says:

I completely understand what your saying however this draft is not so deep for DT. We would more than likely have to trade up just to get someone who could help us out this next year such as Ellis or Dorsey. After those two the talent drops off quite a bit. I’m just saying that if we were to go after Stewart(RB Oregon) that we might even be able to trade down and get a few more picks and still be able to get him. Rather than trading up and getting one those two and losing even more.

  134. #27HitsOkoye Says:

The post about 4 DLs that are 4 years or newer was in reply to BroncoBoy’s post about his proposed starters. We need Eb on the DE and Elvis. Thomas and Moss can fill the middle. It is still a VERY young D line, however and the LBs and Safetys are going to have their hands full. We have had so much success in late or even undrafted picks (Smith, Sharpe,… um… T.D.!!!) that we do not need to go for the best position player available. We need to take the best OL and then DL available with our picks. Then WR and so on. The Bronco’s orginazation has the best scouts and we know where the talent is.

I would like to say thank you to all of the members of this blog for giving their 2 cents. It makes us all think and this is EXACTLY what we need from fans during the off season.

    THANK YOU!!!

  135. broncomania48 Says:

this is all great for our defense , what about the offensive line? Jay Cutler is going to get killed, if our runing game don’t get back on track, and we dont get some solid lineman on our team, i’m very worried about our offense, we have Brandon stokley, best slot receiver in the game, Brandon Marshall breeak-out yr. last year, but who will sart opposite of Brandon Marshall ? and do we really want to put all our faith in Selvin Yoiung to carry our run game?? I just fill like we are one dimensional n the offense and cannot protect the QB, so hopefully they address some of those issues instead of just the d-line or are we just buildongfor the next season ???

  136. Halle3 Says:

How about boss bailey hes going to do really good this year maybe!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  137. Halle3 Says:

THE BRONCOS DID BAD THIS YEAR MAYBE NEXT YEAR. FOR THE DRAFT I WANT A WIDE RECIVER AND A RUNNINGBACK.WHAT I WANT FOR THE BRONCOS FOR THE DRAFT IS DARREN MCFADDEN THE RUNNINGBACK AND FOR RECIVER IS DEVIN THOMAS.HEW THE BRONCOS SHOULD TRY TO GET DARREL JAKSON. BRANDON MARSHALL SHOULD DO REALLY REALLY. AND JOVON WALKER WAS NOT GOOD AT ALL.HE THINKS HE IS BUT NO.

  138. Bronco's Fan 89 Says:

WABRONCO IS THE ONLY SANE PERSON IN THIS ROOM DJ HAD AN OK OR WORSE YEAR AT MLB LET ME THINK SPECTACTULAR YEAR AT WEAKSIDE OK OR WORSE YEAR AT MIDDLE IM GONNA LET YOU DECIDE.
