Walker, Gold Released
As the league year and free agency began, the Denver tenures of two Broncos starters ended.
Wide receiver Javon Walker and weakside linebacker Ian Gold were both released on Friday afternoon, one day shy of two months after a frustrating 2007 season that saw both grapple with knee injuries.
BRONCOS TV: MASON ON WALKER, GOLD:
Gold’s injury sidelined him for most of the Week 15 loss at Houston and all of the last two games, during which Jamie Winborn took his place. Walker, meanwhile, finished the season on the field — with two receptions in each of the final three games — but knee problems took their toll, necessitating surgery on Oct. 19 and a recovery that limited him to spot duty upon his return to the field over a month later.
Walker seemed to foretell the future the day after the regular-season finale, when he said “No,” when asked whether he saw the team as a good fit for him.
“What it boils down to at this point is I’ve got to go where the best fit is for me,” he said during a rambling question-and-answer session that occasionally saw him lapse into the third person.
Javon Walker, Dec. 31, 2007:
“Wherever Javon’s talents can be used at, I’ve got to go to where the best fit’s for me.”
Microfracture surgery on the ailing knee is a possibility, Head Coach Mike Shanahan acknowledged at his season-ending press conference in January.
“There’s talk of a microfracture somewhere down the line,” Shanahan said then. “It could be two or three years from now; it could be four years. We just don’t know.”
Reports are also rampant that the Broncos have retained two of their unrestricted free agents — defensive end John Engelberger and tight end Nate Jackson.

So long Ian!
Hope you can keep helping opposing teams players up on your new team!
February 29th, 2008 at 3:10 pm
I called this before the season starter.
Yay!
February 29th, 2008 at 3:10 pm
Wow well thanks for letting us know Mason… I was reall thinking we might try and get a deal done with Javon, but if he isnt willing to work with us he can follow Ashle’s steps… That really worked well for him didnt it!
February 29th, 2008 at 3:14 pm
Bye Javon and Ian,
I think we all knew that Javon wasn’t coming back. I sure hope we make a push to get another good wide receiver who won’t mind playing behind Marshall. Maybe a speed guy.
Ian missed a lot of tackles this year and Winborn filled in really well. I still think we need another linebacker even just as a fill in spot for DJ, Nate, and Jamie. I think that if we go into the season with those three as our starters and maybe a veteran LB to fill in, we could have a big play line backing corps that doesn’t use up a lot of cap room.
Can anyone tell me why we kept Nate Jackson? It seems to me that we already have one good blocking TE in Daniel Graham and a good receiving tight end in Tony Scheffler. I’m glad we kept John though. He doesn’t make big plays a lot but he is always out there with strong effort.
Keep up the good work Mason. You rock!
February 29th, 2008 at 3:16 pm
I think it was a mistake to let Gold go but Walkers carrer is coming to an end slowly but surely just like Ashley Leile glad him and his big mouth are out of Denver
February 29th, 2008 at 3:18 pm
The way I thought of Nate Jackson last season before his injury was this … if something happened to Scheffler, then good old “Jack Nasty” could step in with, hopefully, a minimal drop-off, since his forte is pass-catching, as it is with Scheffler. It’s worth noting that Jackson has — to my eyes, at least — made palpable and consistent strides in his blocking since converting from wide receiver in 2005, and is a part of multiple special-teams units. The big issue for him is injuries; he’s had two seasons end on injured reserve (2004, 2007) and another in which he struggled with a hamstring injury almost from start to finish (2005).

thanks Mr.Mason, goodbye to the cancer known as javon best of luck wherever you go. ill miss ian cuz he was pretty good but getting old and hurt too much.
peace broncoland

Baaaaad idea. We should have tried harder to trade walker so at least we’d get something out of the deal. And now we only have one good linebacker. At since missed out on Shaun Rodgers, our run defense will SUCK. If you think last year was bad, wait till this year. Unless we can get a great DT in the draft, we’re screwed.
February 29th, 2008 at 3:25 pm
damn i really liked gold. well now he have more problems. glad to see we are wasting time signing jackson. past few years hes been on IR. get on the phone shanny and bring in some players or were gonna go 1-16. and y the hell do the pats have easy season? who cares if they loose all those guys they still will win most of there games.
February 29th, 2008 at 3:26 pm
Its good to see both them go, One is a cry baby and the other just did not performe. Winborn will start next year, he impressed me in his starts this year. We need to trade for a DT, I see all that William, and Rogers are gone so we better get Stroud or Robertson. We really need a good veteran DT to mentor Marcus Thomas. Hopefully Shanny will pull the trigger and make a deal. If not we need to trade up and try to get Ellis or Dorsey.
February 29th, 2008 at 3:29 pm
Wow, We couldn’t get anything for Javon? Seems to me someone will pick him up. The raiders are a great retirement home for washed up has beens. Javon……Replace Porter.
February 29th, 2008 at 3:29 pm
dorsey is the next Courtney brown.
February 29th, 2008 at 3:30 pm
One other thing, We need to go after Gabril Wilson he is a solid safety and could really use his talent. Plus he is only 26 so he has years of good playing time infront of him!!!
February 29th, 2008 at 3:31 pm
Don’t Fear Broncoland - Our Defense sucked because of Bates “proven” scheme. With 2 shutdown corners we can be aggressive with 8 in the box - sure we’ll get burned a few times - but I think we’d get “rich” more often!!! I’m excited to see what Slowik puts together… We are also sitting pretty well for the draft - let’s stay away from the old washups with health/moral issues…
February 29th, 2008 at 3:32 pm
I am hoping the broncos can build their team with the talent on there now. Maybe free agency is overrated,
February 29th, 2008 at 3:33 pm
smithalltheway, Dorsey the next Courtney Brown, Ha ha ha that is the most stupid thing i have heard. This is a guy that really liked Gold when the guy has not done anything good for us in a couple of years and says we are going to go 1-16 will not good pick ups. Dorsey & Ellis are more likely to be the next Warren Sapps
February 29th, 2008 at 3:34 pm
its just sad that we didnt get anything, probly a trade out of those two,,but other teams would have second thoughts on trading for injured players,,
i really liked gold,,best of luck to ya,,
seems like most of the big names are gone in free agency,,i wonder who the Broncos can pull out…..
February 29th, 2008 at 3:44 pm
Broncos need: Speed receiver; DT; S; T; P; LB; RB?
Still have: 9 draft choices; College Free Agents post-draft.
Free agents seem slim-pickings right now for the money anyway.
I sure hope the Defense comes up with a PLAN all the coaches and players buy into and execute.
February 29th, 2008 at 3:46 pm
Yea, I know Gabril is visiting oakland today so hopefully he does not sign with them, that would suck. I also agree Bryant Johnson will be a good add, I know Arizona is trying to keep him but it looks like they will not be able to. As far as Robertson or Stroud, I dont care which one we get as long as they get one of them.
February 29th, 2008 at 3:48 pm
well, that’s the problem with assigning bonuses that are due before the draft to players like Javon with a history of being an injured crybaby. It makes it really hard to trade them before you have to cut them. I was a huge Ian Gold fan for a while, but after his ACL tear he was never as fast, and seeing as he has never actually been big or strong enough to play LB in the NFL, losing that speed really ended his effectiveness. I’ll miss Ian and I hope he can retire before he gets absolutely wrecked by this game. And for Javon’s sake, I hope he can find out what life would be like if he was on a team where is the ONLY receiving threat.
February 29th, 2008 at 4:02 pm
id take bryant johnson, just because berrian is prolly going to b a 49er and sign boos bailey and demmorio williams or just move winborn to weak, and sign gibril wilson. to bad ther aren’t any good DTs Left!
February 29th, 2008 at 4:03 pm
I COULD CARE LESS ABOUT JAVON…HE DIDNT DO ANYTHING LAST SEASON AND HE IS A BABY BKUZ HE IS INTIMIDATED BY MARSHALL…HE FEELS HE SHOULDNT COMPETE FOR THE NUMBER 1 SPOT N SINCE MARSHALL GAVE HIM SOME COMPETITION HE FELT THREATENED..I SAY GOOD WE RELEASED HIM HE DIDNT DO ANYTHING…AS FOR IAN HE WILL CONTINUE HIS LEGACY ELSEWHERE…TOO BAD IT WONT BE WITH US BUT HE WILL GO ON N FIND A STARTING POSITION WHERE HE IS NEEDED…I AINT WORRIED ABOUT HIM…HE WILL DO GREAT
February 29th, 2008 at 4:06 pm
Andrew - Any idea if either of these were designated as post June 1 transactions? Or are the Broncos taking the full salary cap hit this year? Thanks.
February 29th, 2008 at 4:11 pm
I don’t understand why he was released when he could have been traded. Even a 5th round draft pick would be better than nothing. It also seems apparent the the biggest problem the Bronco’s have this off season is finding Cap space. How much cap space is going to be used up by releasing him instead of trading him? It will haunt the Bronco’s for years to come!
February 29th, 2008 at 4:14 pm
Even though I hate to admit it. It seems that the Bronco’s really need a GM like the Chargers. A.J. Smith works the system. His system is the future of the NFL. He does not go after anybody in free agency and gets supplemental draft picks in return. So they always have a young talented team. We have to find a way to beat them. We need to draft like ‘06 every year.
February 29th, 2008 at 4:15 pm
well i wouldnt mind boss but we really could have used gold. BRING BACK AL WISLON. how about that rod coleman does he still have anything in the tank? and get on the phone and bring stroud over here.
February 29th, 2008 at 4:16 pm
draft Kenny Philips!!!!!!
February 29th, 2008 at 4:17 pm
RSABronco - The cap hit is the same if a player is released, traded or retires.
February 29th, 2008 at 4:22 pm
Bring on the BOSS…Time to SHINE!!!
February 29th, 2008 at 4:29 pm
what about lang is he still a FA?
February 29th, 2008 at 4:30 pm
what do you guys think about signing Michael Turner?
February 29th, 2008 at 4:32 pm
i like it.
February 29th, 2008 at 4:43 pm
I think Walker’s getting a bad rap. I’m not disappointed that he’s moving on, or being moved on, but the guy had an absolutely horrible 2007. His first experience of the year was to have a great friend and teammate die in his arms. He followed that with a decent start to the year (17 catches at almost 13 yards a catch) followed by re-injury of the knee, a long recovery and then a tough time getting back into the swing of things. I can see where he’d have been frustrated, but lets not forget he gave it all on the field in 06, put up some good numbers on some huge plays and was a well liked guy. Again, I think we are better off at this point without him, and he’d be better off leaving all of this behind him. I definitely feel that his comments at the close of the season were unprofessional, but I don’t think this level of bashing is really fair to the guy. Put yourselves in his shoes for a minute. He was a standup guy in 06 and I’d personally prefer to remember him racking up 1000+ yards and more than a handful of nice TD’s along the way. Rather than for an emotionally painful, injury riddled, highly frustrated season such as 08.
February 29th, 2008 at 4:58 pm
Bigg, i don’t think we are good at RB. We have a pot-smoking, injury prone Travis Henry, and a decent but not great Selvin Young. I think he might do well given the chance, but he could have just had a lucky rookie year like Mike Bell. We need a second round RB (Felix Jones?) or a free agent like Turner or Julius Jones.
February 29th, 2008 at 5:00 pm
I don’t care who you are. Javon Walker is a gamer. I will always be grateful for the 2006 season and his dominating performance on opening day 2007 which saw Cutler convert two fourth down plays to win it at the end.
I wish Javon the best of luck and I hope he finally finds a long term home somewhere! Thanks for the memories man.
Gold, ditto…You were a good Bronco for many years!
February 29th, 2008 at 5:06 pm
so Mr. Mason or anybody else that would know, how much money will we save by the release of these two? or do we end up takin a salary cap hit?
February 29th, 2008 at 5:27 pm
Best of luck Ian and Jevon.
February 29th, 2008 at 5:35 pm
So the day goes by and we still have not done anything. All the good FA are getting signed. We needed a safety, Gabril Wilson signed with Oakland, Madieu Williams with the Vikings. We needed help no the O line, Faneca signed with the Jets. We did not trade for any DT, while we wait, Rogers goes to cincy and Jenkins goes to the Jets. The only good signing we made was Engelberger. We resigned Nate Jackson but how many TE does this team need, he was a little impressive last year but TE should not be a priority. We really need to resign Elam, Lynch and Ekuban. We really need help at LB. Hopefully we will sign Boss Bailey, he will give us some depth, maybe compete for a starting job. If we do not make at least one big signing or trade in FA we are looking at a mediocre 08 season. We can not fix everything throught the Draft.
February 29th, 2008 at 5:37 pm
Mason, why does this team not trade disgruntled/ underperforming players off instead of cutting them? Last year, we traded Bell and Foster away for Bly (which was possibly one of the most lopsided trades I have ever seen). I understand that a player may not be willing to play for a certain team and will hold out a la Darwin Walker, but why not negotiate with a team that wants their services and get ANYTHING for them? You can’t tell me the Redskins would not have been willing to send a 5th round choice for Walker and the Bills wouldn’t have been willing to deal out a 6th rounder for Gold. Now there is nothing besides the loss of high caliber players.
February 29th, 2008 at 5:46 pm
Are you kidding me about Gold??..How many times in the last 2 years have we seen an opposing tightend rumbling down the middle of the field wide open with Gold 2 steps behind?!..He was awful and had to go. I’m glad they didn’t go get the rogers deal done, let’s stick with thomas at dt and find something in the draft again.
February 29th, 2008 at 5:57 pm
Javon Walker is like the kid who takes his ball and goes home because he can’t be the pitcher anymore. Good riddance! It’s too bad we gave up a high draft choice for him and got zero in return. Seems like the same thing happened with Eddie Kennison.
As for Ian Gold, I liked him in the early years, but he didn’t play with much intensity last season–too many missed tackles and he was a big contributor to the Donkey Dung Defense Debacle.
I hope Shanahan and his cohorts can get it together and come up with a plan that works for an entire season. He did way too much tinkering and changing in mid-stream and the results were painfully apparent on Sundays.
Hope springs eternal in Bronco Land!
February 29th, 2008 at 6:22 pm
So long Gold you will be missed. Dont let the door hit you on the way out walker. Bring back 56, In Shanahan we trust!
February 29th, 2008 at 6:25 pm
The release of Ian Gold makes me sad. He was a great cover linebacker and a great leader on this team.
The release of Javon Walker makes me slightly sad. I wish the Broncos would have traded him to the cowboys. Still if it helps this team it gives us a better chance.
February 29th, 2008 at 6:32 pm
I believe that Javon Walker should have stayed. For the reason being that now look at who is left at WR. Marshall A+ Stokley B+ Smith ? see what will we do now? ian well he was just not performing at the level needed. walker while hurt. he did say that he didnt want to be hear though with a nice contract and then a good draft i believe we would have been set.
February 29th, 2008 at 6:47 pm
Great! Marshall & Martinez really came through last year, By Javon
& good luck
February 29th, 2008 at 7:03 pm
Well, with walker released I believe we should chek out randy moss knowing he is a free agent and we now need a first string wide reciever, and see how he works with us you know experiment. heck he may work.
February 29th, 2008 at 7:16 pm
Well, I am surprised we got rid of Walker. Despiste all the talk/rumors, I was hoping they would come to some agreement…..oh well. If he doesn’t want to play here than go somewhere else. Lelie made a bad descision because look where he would be if he stayed. Somehow I think Walker is going to regret this.
Hey Martinez, it your turn to really shine now. As far as Gold, I don’t have any problem with him so I wish him the best as well as Walker.
February 29th, 2008 at 7:27 pm
I think It’s bad for ya’ll to put Javon Walker down like that after what he has done for this team in 06 and I think he would have done the same in 07 if healthy!!! I agree with psymonkey 100%… Walker made some amazing big plays for us in 06 and to have gone through a devastating tragedy the beginning of 07, It’s very hard to deal with. This team was lucky and fortunate to have him on this team, but u can’t blame him… it is a running team!!! He deserves to be somewhere else. So I think the real haters and crybabies are on this post!!!! Much luck to Javon & Ian!!!
February 29th, 2008 at 7:37 pm
There are so many diferent areas that need attention on this team!! Please for the love of pete SOMEONE DRAFT PLAYERS WHO ARE YOUNG, TALENTED, CARE, WANT TO BE IN DENVER, AND CAN BRING BACK THE FEAR OPPOSING TEAMS HAD WHEN THEY CAME TO PLAY IN DENVER.
February 29th, 2008 at 7:52 pm
ian should stay
February 29th, 2008 at 7:56 pm
Knee injuries sometimes are very hard to come back from….it takes 2 years, even if things go well. I hope they don’t pick up someone else with knee injuries, or draft a “potential” player with a serious ankle injury. Javon and Ian are both very talented, just have to get their knees back! Hope the Broncos use a couple of screening questions, like, on a Wednesday night, is it more likely you’d be seen at a Christian Bible study group or at a strip club smoking pot?…. and secondly, have you ever had major knee surgery?
February 29th, 2008 at 8:15 pm
I can understand getting nothing for Gold, a guy who couldn’t tackle my 80 year-old mother-in-law !! But getting NOTHING for J. Walker !!!!! Incredible !!!! Everyone knows the Cowboys want him, now they get him for nothing. Shanny, what are you thinking ? Or ARE you thinking at all ????? Re-signing Jackson is o.k. but Engelberger ??? We need to REPLACE Engelberger, not re-sign him. Who cares if he is cheap, he stinks !!!! What the heck is going on up in Dove Valley ??? Where are the offensive & defensive line signings ?? Hey Broncos = W-A-K-E U-P !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
February 29th, 2008 at 8:21 pm
Good, now can we please go find some help at DT and OT
February 29th, 2008 at 8:33 pm
don’t worry guys well have a great draft I can feel it,I hope we get tom zbikowski from notre dame that guy is talented we could get him in the 2nd to 4th round which gives us the option of getting a great oline men in the 1st we can do this I loved ian Gold and im sorry that he had to leave, javon was pretty good to I think we could have worked with him some more but still lets get Randy Moss instead maybe he will like Jay more then tom brady lol
February 29th, 2008 at 8:34 pm
and what about Lance Briggs he would be a great fit with DJ
February 29th, 2008 at 9:43 pm
i think we should have tried to get something for walker!! and i also think
that keeping henry is going to bite us in the a** young is the future back
of the broncos!! we still hace marshell, and stokly so we should be ok at wr
and i would also like to say,
ROD SMITH, YOU WERE, AND IN MY EYES STILL ARE
ONE OF THE BEST FOOTBALL PLAYERS TO EVER WEAR
A BRONCOS UNIFORM,AND ONE OF THE BEST PLAYERS
TO EVER PLAY THE GAME, YOU WILL BE VERY MISSED
IN DENVER AND EVEYWHERE ELSE THANK YOU FOR
13 OF THE BEST YEARS OF MY LIFE AS A BRONCOS FAN
AND I WISH YOU ALL THE BEST WITH EVEYTHING TO
COME IN YOUR FUTURE!! AND I HOPE THAT YOU REMAIN
A PART OF THE BRONCOS ORGINIZATION!!
February 29th, 2008 at 9:49 pm
MARTINEZ IS JUNK!! we DO!! need to look at moss he may not be the best guy in the world, but he can catch a ball pretty damm good!!! martinez should be cut!
February 29th, 2008 at 10:33 pm
Kudos to the Broncos staff, I agree with every move they have made and every move they haven’t made. Maybe consider picking up one or two players in free agency. Only pick up players that are healthy and young or pick up none at all. Be patient, I like it! GO BRONCOS!
February 29th, 2008 at 11:03 pm
how bout de justin smith?
February 29th, 2008 at 11:22 pm
The funny thing is……….go ahead………replace them.
I want names.
March 1st, 2008 at 12:03 am
I would have liked them to get Bernard Berrian and Gibril Wilson. Basically what the broncos are saying is we are rebuilding. They don’t have the Cap room because of Shanahan’s mindless spending. Bowlen is tired of the Shanahan wasting his money. Case in point Daniel Graham is the highest paid TD in the league. This is frustrating…..
March 1st, 2008 at 12:50 am
So the browns got both Cory Williams & Shaun Rogers. They get two of the best DT on the league. What and company thinking, yeah we have Marcus Thomas who is going to be a beast but we do not have any other descent DT. We just sit back and watch 2 good DT go the same team. This hasbeen very frustrating to watch. Shanny better pull the trigger and get either Stroud or Robertson becuse we desperatly need a good veteran DT. Well I guess we will wait and see if Shanny can pull off I good deal. Hopefuly because we can not fix all of our needs in the draft.
On a good note, JOHN LYNCH RESIGHED AND IS COMING BACK, THAT IS THE BEST NEWS I HAVE HEARD ALL DAY.
March 1st, 2008 at 1:19 am
Do you really think the Broncos didn’t try to get something for these two? Javon was due some $5M on the fourth. No team in the NFL thought that he would be on the Broncos roster at that time. Why would you give up even a seventh round draft choice for someone you know you can get for free? Same thing for Gold. No NFL team is going to give up ANYTHING when they think they can get it for free.
March 1st, 2008 at 1:22 am
The Broncos are doing the right thing by not signing these Free Agents. Look at the contracts they are getting. Teams are paying too much for guys that are on the market for a reason. I am glad to see Shanny show a little restraint.
March 1st, 2008 at 4:58 am
I think the Broncos staff really does an amazing job! There is one thing that I really don’t understand I think we hopefully can do better moving forward. It is like a big poker game. At the end of the season if Coach would have hyped up Javon knowing we where going to trade or release him then I think we would have got something for him. The last press conference Shanahan was talking about his injuries instead of blowing a little smoke like…” Javon is a all pro wideout that…bla, bla bla” and just acted like we really wanted him then the bucs, redskins, and titans would have gave us a pick at least. Water under the bridge…all good. We have a good team! With a good draft and not going after a bunch of lazy, overpriced Free Agents we will not only have success, but long term success. Nate Jackson and Ekuban are solid signings! Nate Jackson has really become a good blocker finally. He knows the system, has good hands and has grown into his weight. Ekuban could have really been the difference last year from 7 - 9 and playoffs. He is strong and can move inside on passing downs.
This is what I would like to personally see happen… (Very Rough)
MIN) FB Richardson
NE) S Wilson
DET) LB Baily
SET) WR DJ Hacket
FA
AL Wilson
The Freak
George Foster
Draft
1) Trade down if Rivers isn’t there and get RB John Stewart
2) Trade down and get SS John Z (ND) or LB, DT
4) DT Harrison, Moore, Laws or SS WR
5)FB Hills Hester or Schmidt
Don’t Hate! Broncos are going to surprise a lot of people next year! We have always been better underdogs anyway : )
I would have liked to see gold try SS. He could have been really good
March 1st, 2008 at 7:15 am
I’m not surprised to see Walker hit the road, but I thought Travis Henry would be the other big name. I sure hope Shanahan saw something that we’d didn’t as his seasson was lousy at best. Constantly injured. BLEH!!!
I’m sad and happy to see Lynch back. His best days have past and his pass covering abilities are suspect. But, he’s excatly what you want for a mentor. Now, just sign Rod as a wider receiver coach and I’ll really be happy.
March 1st, 2008 at 7:28 am
How about LANCE BRIGGS? He is a great middlelinebacker and then Denver can put Williams back at outside. Please tell me Denver is looking to bring Lance Briggs in!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
March 1st, 2008 at 8:37 am
Golds contract wasnt even up yet. Why didnt we trade him for a draft pick and save the cap penalties?
March 1st, 2008 at 8:42 am
mcinley and thomas, dt with jarvis and dumervil,, we will be fine..
please get boley lb
March 1st, 2008 at 11:06 am
the proven way to build a team is through the draft….think about it if the free agents were so good why isn’t their team choosing to keep them?….I wouldn’t let a player go if they played a major roll in the teams success, theres ways to restructure a contract and make it happen, so theres no such thing as a salary CAP casualty….you do what you gotta do to keep those guys its to hard to replace them and replace the chemistry….the guys on the market are expendable because they can be replaced, BOTTOM line…Javon, see ya later….later, later! Gold hate to see you go man, hope you do well on your next team, as long as it ain’t on an AFC west team….
March 1st, 2008 at 1:18 pm
how can u compare lelie to walker please…walkers first 2 games last year he had 17 catches and 220 yards…to lead the nfl…bad knee’s what can u say ask TD about that…would u all say he sucks and good..if he didnt win us superbowls just put up stats..im not comparing the two players just there injury….javon is the man..and went thru so much with dwill that takes more than a year to get ova u lames…..go ian and javon!! much luv and luck in the future.
March 1st, 2008 at 1:58 pm
damn we suck…we cant sign anyone…..look who already got signed….faneca gone, vilma gone, justin smith gone, shuan rodgers gone..just wait briggs will be gone soon probably to one of our rivals…denver just doesnt wanna spend the money…check out the other teams…how can the 49ers sign all these guys like Foster, bruce, smith, ect, after drafting #1 smith and Davis..then signing guys like clements and lewis to huge deals last year….how do they have the money and we dont have any to sign anybody….i pray we sign somebody….plus i just read that alot of teams are interested in Javon walker,,the niners, eagles, bucs, ect ect ect…why why couldnt we pull a trade at least for a one draft pick….not even a 7th rounder…what we didnt know people were interested…maybe would should look at the whole organization like rod said!
March 1st, 2008 at 2:00 pm
no i think were getting the russian dude niko blah blah blah from seattle what a joke..thats the big name of the off season!! what a joke!
March 1st, 2008 at 2:04 pm
i know how do the browns get both those dt’s and we get nothin….wow!! the browns are going to be solid on d next year…way better then we will be…its almost sac-religous im just saying its so frustrating….another year of getting ran on and onther year of wasting champs skills…..im hoping we go 18-0 but honestly i feel our team was better last year at this time….!
March 1st, 2008 at 2:44 pm
I think leave DJ in the middle. He was good last season and will be better next year. The samething happens in baseball you move a guy around from pos. to pos. and his productivity drops… Plus Briggs is an OLB. Its obvious we need help on the DL. Your LBs will always appear better when you have a DL to keep the blockers off them. A big guy like Stroud or Robertson would do that. Plus please quit asking to sign someone just for the sake of signing someone.

Now lets go get lance briggs
March 1st, 2008 at 4:09 pm
I will agree on that!!!!
March 1st, 2008 at 4:28 pm
Walker came to denver with plans to be the #1 Receiver. With his injury, and with Marshall stepping in and having such a great year, I think Javon realized he would not be the go to guy. He is a tallented Receiver and will do well with another team, providing he stays healthy. I wish him the best where ever he ends up.
March 1st, 2008 at 4:31 pm
Lance Briggs is a great player but I don’t think we should spend that type of money on another angry player. Just go after Boss Bailey. The first Bailey turned out pretty good, lets get a second. DJ did OK for a middle LB this year and with one more year and a (hopefully) better system from Slowik, we should be able to get that defense back on track. BTW, I am so happy to here that John Lynch is back. We have our thumper back.
Shanny: Sign Boss and resign Hamza Abdullah! Hes the best backup safety we have.
March 1st, 2008 at 4:36 pm
Seriously Get LANCE BRIGGS!!! My buddy is a Bears fan and he said that Briggs makes most of the plays, but gets over shadowed by Urlacher, we need a good LB! Sign Briggs NOW! And then go get Wilson back, heck yeah! Wilson, Briggs & D.J. in ‘08 would be sick!!!
March 1st, 2008 at 5:14 pm
Javon is a good receiver but Brandon Stokley can take his place. Ian is a good linebacker tho and I think we will regret letting him go.
March 1st, 2008 at 5:22 pm
Jay Glazer, of FOXSports.com, reports the Jacksonville Jaguars have traded DT Marcus Stroud to the Buffalo Bills for third- and fifth-round draft picks.
March 1st, 2008 at 6:20 pm
shanny better have something up his sleave now that all the DTs are gone. Maybe he’s trying to get moss or briggs. either would be huge. Just hope we do something or we could be in trouble next year. Sammy knight would be a good addition but we should go after bigbe in green bay

Many of my bros here seem to be freaking out. I don’t know exactly how it works, but free agents are expensive and the Broncos seem to be creating cap room for…? Draft choices? If they can find starters among college free agents then can’t they draft nine guys this year who not only make the team, but compete for a starting job? I was afraid that Henry and Walker would be untradeable due to $$. So, what do you have to trade? All I’ve heard about is Domonique Foxworth. That doesn’t sound good to me. He and Paymah are the next up if either of the two starting corners go down. Foxworth also plays safety. He’s the kind of player to keep, like Hixon should have been kept. Is it possible that Fox was low-tendered as an inducement for a trade that didn’t happen? Maybe later they will pay him what he’s really worth to the team. Lance Briggs would be another great linebacker from Arizona, but he wasn’t happy when he was franchised for a lot of $$. Do you really want that kind of baggage in the lockerroom? Broncos have signed some good free agents before: Holland, Graham, Stokely, Ramsey, Winborn, Cargile, Ferguson, Leach, Mustard and Hall. They’ve shown that they can find players among the college free agents: Bell, Burton, Harris, Pears, Rogers and Young. Maybe it’s time to concentrate on younger players since there is already a nucleus of quality in their early to mid-twenties. Look at the Giants’ SuperBowl roster. Weren’t all of their ‘07 draft choices on the team? Five of them made big plays in the game. The Broncos don’t seem to be that far off. If the D can come up with one plan…if ST can learn to run their lanes and block and tackle, etc. A good draft is needed. Need: fast WR, DT, S, T, LB, P & RB not necessarily in that order. Ahmad Bradshaw was the 250th player selected last year. Instead of the usual six college free agents, maybe the Broncos should increase that. Also, there comes a time when guys just run out of time. It happened to Rod Smith. It will even happen to the amazing Tom Nalen (who will immediately be deified just like Herakles). Apparently Lynch sees the value of sticking around and he’s a Stanford guy! The draft will be interesting.
March 1st, 2008 at 8:21 pm
Briggs agreed to terms with the bears
March 1st, 2008 at 9:46 pm
Holy crap why get rid of a starter like javon wat is wrong with them?
I can see getting rid of gold but y javon?
March 2nd, 2008 at 12:39 am
oh man!!!can we atleast sign Boss or Demarrio??both would be great,,plus dont get ur hopes up guys,Briggs jst signed an extension with the Bears..
lets get Bryant from Arizona……..
March 2nd, 2008 at 7:36 am
Adam Caplan, of Scout.com, reports the Kansas City Chiefs have reached an agreement on a five-year contract with free-agent LB Demorrio Williams (Falcons). The contract is worth a total of $16 million with $5.5 million guaranteed.
March 2nd, 2008 at 1:54 pm
Tuna says he (taylor)is not, but who knows. Taylor is on the wring side of 30 and the picks we would have to give up are not worth it.
March 2nd, 2008 at 2:11 pm
too baad,,(for Demarrio),,plz lets get Boss and Boley…
March 2nd, 2008 at 2:36 pm
this is absolutely stupid. trade them!!!! god
March 2nd, 2008 at 3:13 pm
DJ will get better this year and honestly Jamie Winborn played A LOT better than Gold and I have always been a Gold fan. There are some solid LB’s in the draft and they seem to do the best as rookies. I’m proud of the Broncos for always showing class. They let Javon and Gold go before FA so they could have a fair shot at Free Agency. I think if they would have kept them a couple more days we would have got a pick but they showed tremendous class as always. As long as Thomas, Crowder, Moss and Harris are in the weight room getting stronger we can add a few pieces and be a great D again. Build through the draft! Trade down from 12 and get some more picks unless some how DT Ellis falls. If you tivo’d the last games check out Jamie Winborn! He is a monster!!

Something interesting about the Chargers (who have been proposed as a model of how to build) is that they have brought in as many as 20+ college free agents to their training camp. Maybe the Broncos should do that. There are c.250 Div.I schools plus however many Div.II schools. You never know what a player is really like until you see him practice. Look at how many “surprises” there are at the Combine and those guys are only working out in shorts. Plus, they are a select group. When a player is in pads working out against proven NFL talent is when you really find out. That’s why coaches like preseason games. That’s why NFL Europa was cool. The Broncos have only brought in about six CFAs each of the past two years. Out of that group they have found Mike Bell, Antwon Burton, Mark Fenton, Steven Harris, Eric Pears, Rod Rogers and Selvin Young. So, why not bring in 24 CFAs? The only thing is, IF you are committed to a youth movement you must be ready to release older players. The cadre surrounding Cutler (Abdullah, Crowder, Dumervil, Foxworth, Hall, Harris, Kuper, Marshall, Moss, Myers, Paymah, Scheffler, Thomas and Williams) has about a five-year maximum window of opportunity. The time to build is now. Stop frittering away money on inflated free-agents. Guard the draft choices. Mine the talent pool of the College Free Agents.
March 2nd, 2008 at 4:05 pm
didnt care about javon but we needed to cut webster not ian we hav to replace webster he sucked
March 2nd, 2008 at 4:22 pm
So you all wanted to sign these big name free agents, just how do you expect us to pay for them? This was a WEAK free agent class and it shows, have you seen some of the contracts these free agents are getting? Lance Briggs 6 year, 36 mil, Gibril Wilson 6 year, 39 mill deal with 19.5 mill over the first 3 years, Justin Smith 6 year, 45 million, Bernard Berrium 7 year, 35 million or Donte Stallworth 6 year, 42 million. The Broncos are only about 10 million under the cap before we cut Gold and Walker which due to the guaranteed money they are owed will only added a 4-5 million to the equation. We still have to sign Elam for a year or two or do you want to save money and take a chance on a unproven college kicker or a journeyman kicker? We also still have our draft picks to sign. Also, all these trades that are going on, if the players are so good then why are they only getting 3rd’s and 5th’s for them? Marcus Stroud has been hurt the last two years with ankle/knee injuries and Shaun Rogers is inconsistent at best, lazy at worst. I don’t want to break the bank on one player when we have more than a few holes to fill or give up draft picks on unproven or often injured players.
March 2nd, 2008 at 5:15 pm
we’ll see what colbert brings, however, what do you all think about trying out jabar gaffney?
March 2nd, 2008 at 10:31 pm
glad they got released, never would have gotten value for them in a trade.. now with the freed up cap space theres more room the bring guys in and re-sign who we already have.. i think javon should be on the madden 09 cover cause everyone knows curse or not he’ll get injured again
March 3rd, 2008 at 8:35 am
UPDATE
HERE IS WHAT WE NOW KNOW
1 GABRIL WILSON IS NOW IN OAKLAND
2 TURNER THE BURNER IS A FALCON
3 BRIGGS’ DUMB ASS IS STAYING IN CHI TOWN
4 WE DIDNT GET STROUD OR ROGERS
5 WE DIDNT GET STALLWORTH (I DONT KNOW IF HE WOULD OF BEEN WORTH IT THOUGH)
6 WE SIGNED THAT GUY FROM CAROLINA COLBERT
7 WE NEED TO BRING BACK WILSON THE HEART AND SOUL OF OUR D
8 WE NEED A SAFETY TO REPLACE LYNCH FOR NEXT YEAR
9 WE NEED TO GET LINEBACKERS AFTER RELEASING HOLDMAN AND GOLD
10 WE NEED TO SOLIDIFY OUR D-LINE POINT BLANK PERIOD CAUSE IF WE CAN’T STOP THE RUN OR CONSTINTLY PUT PRESSURE AND THE QB WE WON’T BEAT ANYONE!!!
March 3rd, 2008 at 8:37 am
ALSO I THINK BRONCOMAGIC IS A GENIUS
March 3rd, 2008 at 1:18 pm
Jazzyfrizzle, I can’t say that I would sign Jabar Gaffney. The only rreason that his name was mentioned this year is because Tom Brady knows how to distribute the ball. He was a 4th receiver for the pats and noone is going to sign him just because he had a few good plays last year. But I can’t say that I’m thrilled with siging of colbert either, as far as I’m concerned he hasn’t proven anything to anyone. Now if he comes out and is productive and has even a 45 catch season then I can say that it might have been a good addition
March 3rd, 2008 at 2:49 pm
Whats this about Marcus Thomas getting arrested in Florida. Suprise suprise. I guess this is what you get when you draft people with character problems. What is the penalty from the league for a 1st offense of possesion of cocaine? Sounds like were pretty much screwed at DT.
March 3rd, 2008 at 3:26 pm
well recent developments say that the driver took the blame,,no traces of coke wer found on Thomas,,,results on tests were negative,,,,their just waiting to see if there would be charges,,,,idk,,i read this on one of the BRoncos top stories,,,
this guy should get his act together,,,the organization risked signing him considering his past problems,,,but those days are over, maybe i’m wrong and he is not at fault,,,who knows…
lets just hope he remains clean from now on,,,,
March 3rd, 2008 at 4:53 pm
i cant belive that KC got Williams he would have been sick on the edges with DJ…and GOLD if we had kept him…fast and better is what we would have been…but enough of that….
we need to get Jason Taylor so bad….think about it he would bring pass rush, starpower, leadership, and would be a good person for Moss, and Crowder to learn from….Plus he would make champs job that much easier for the passrush and all the effort opposing teams would go to stop him!!!
please sign him!! we already blew the justin smith, all the DT deals, briggs, zach thomas,, we lets all our rivals get everyone im wouldnt be at all surpirsed if JT went to KC or SD or the pats or sumthin……
March 3rd, 2008 at 7:07 pm
anyone who wouldve wanted justin smith is stupid. especially at the money they gave him. at half that price i wouldve still raised an eyebrow. the broncos have showed restraint which i am for one very pleased with. justin smith, people? are you kidding me? cincys D was worse than denvers last year….yeah we need a justin smith like a hole in the head. FA is not the way to get it done. the draft is, with a pickup here or there….smart pickups not 35 million dollar pickups for mid level talent….shaun rogers? cmon ppl settle down. corey williams was a good get….but we havent heard what kind of fool hardyness the browns gave him in a contract……No you dont win by going after high priced FA’s
March 4th, 2008 at 11:34 am
ramboskithefan, Having Jason taylor on our team would be the best thing I think this team could do to strengthen our d line. But that would be a huge ticket number for the organization. especially come re-signing time for him. we just don’t have the cap room to sign a big name player like Jason Taylor.
March 4th, 2008 at 12:22 pm
BYE BYE Walker!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Brandon is a way better reciever than you’ll ever dream of.
March 4th, 2008 at 9:37 pm
well javon went to OAKLAND. TRAITOR much?? i cant stand this guy. i have a pic of him in my room… its goin down.
March 5th, 2008 at 2:40 pm
I am not sad to see either of these guys go. I wish we would have gotten something for Javon, but lets face it he wasn’t worth much, he is just an injury pron WR. The thing I have really been disappointed with is we have not been active in free agency at least you kinda of know what you are getting were in the draft you never know if the player will be a bust or not. Maybe we should try to get Sapp to rethink retiring and come play for the Broncos! (Ha Ha Ha)
