EX-NFL Guys Grapple with Sails

April 1st, 2011 - 2:08pm by mark_cooper

Not much new on the horizon but a lot of wraggling in the lockout talks.

Mentioned I was in Costa Rica with as few X-NFL players a few weeks ago. We had Jake Grove (Virginia Tech-Raiders-Dolphins) who just left the League after and injury with the Dolphins formerly with the Raiders…and the only reason I let him on my boat was he was with the Dolphins last or he’d have had to swim out to catch fish.

Big Dave Rimington of Nebraska, Outland trophy winner and the host of the Rimington Trophy each year given to the top offensive Center in Division 1 NCAA football is the chair and CEO of the Boomer Esiason Foundation. Dave’s staff did a great job putting together this CF (Cystic Fibrosis fundraiser) that raised money for kids in Costa Rica. 17 boat entrys and a absolutely wonderful tournament was held.

Tons of fish caught and Mike Shaad a former Eagle and Ram was also there with myself. I emceed the event and it looks like we have a new home for the future of this tournament and many of you who have never Deep sea fished or caught a billfish of any kind HAVE to come down and join the fun next year. We were at the Marina Pez Vela and stayed at the Hotel Mariposa in Quepos, Costa Rica, both have great websites you need to check out. GREAT place to vacation and catch the fish of a lifetime. Luna Tours handled all the boats and arrangements and Jerry the owner is the only guy to call in Quepos for fishing.

Anyway, greatd cuase and a lot of fun in a quick weekend of catching some wonderful sailfish and even a few Blue Marlin were caught. I’ll keep you posted on when they set the dates for next year and you can see years of the event on my facebook if you like that kind of stuff just friend me there and you’ll actually see years of destinations around the world as you all know I’m a fishing nut.

Headed to Abaco, Bahamas, Marsh Harbour for a bonefish tournament next week so, I’ll keep you posted on the off-season fishing :o ).. You should come join me.

If the Bears didn`t have such a good defense back then, you could chalk up 4 or five more losses. The defense kept the Bears in some close wins the year they went to the SB.

  2. strandoftds says:

BUT THATS FOOTBALL! Just ask Trent Dilfer.

  3. strandoftds says:

It just started snowing hear in Colorado Springs. We haven`t had snow in about 3 weeks. Mild winter this year in the city.

  4. samurai713 says:

without FA this year will be just like last and if Tebow does get the nod and we sink, we could draft Luck next year, and we know Elway would love that. I will not be participating in the contest guys. I don’t have the free-time to look at all the draftees and evaluate everything, my guess for our first pick is Marcel Dareus, and if he’s taken by Carolina, Patrick Peterson. Bowers injuries and Fairly’s character issues will keep us away from them I think.

Let’s shed a little light about what rbf1 just brought up:

    2005

In the 2005 NFL season, Orton was rushed into the Bears starting lineup as a rookie after a preseason injury to starter Rex Grossman, and the poor play of back-up Chad Hutchinson.

Orton started 15 games of the season, however was replaced by Grossman after halftime during the Bears’ Week 15 victory against the Atlanta Falcons.

After sitting for Week 16, Orton started the regular season finale, Week 17, against the Minnesota Vikings. The outcome of this game, for the Chicago Bears, did not have any affect on their post-season hopes. The Bears had already clinched the NFC North championship and a first-round bye in the 2005-06 playoffs with their Week 16 victory over the Green Bay Packers. Grossman then started for the Bears in their only postseason game. They lost to the Carolina Panthers.[3]

Overall, the Bears had a record of 10-5 in games that Orton started, including an eight-game winning streak after a 1-3 start. Despite the team’s success, Orton finished with the lowest quarterback rating in the NFL (59.7) among all “qualified” quarterbacks (those with 224+ pass attempts).[4] Despite the low rating, the Bears coaches repeatedly insisted that they were pleased with Orton’s performance. The coaching staff asked Orton to minimize mistakes and to let the rushing attack and the defense win ballgames rather than employing an aggressive passing attack.

Measuring Orton’s victories, his rookie season was successful. His 15 starts and 10 victories are both rookie records for Bears quarterbacks, and the 10 victories are the third most in the NFL, since 1970, behind Ben Roethlisberger’s 14 victories in ’04, and Joe Flacco’s 11 victories in ’08.

    2006, the SB year!

Following the 2005 season, the Bears signed veteran Brian Griese as the team’s second string quarterback. Orton, now demoted, became the Bears’ third-string quarterback, and did not see any playtime throughout the entire 2006 season.

So not only did Orton not play in the SB he was third string, haha.

  6. baylinorcrush says:

It’s scary to read all that and realize Orton’s limitations go wayyyy back!

  7. strandoftds says:

Oh so Kyle Ortons sophomore season was the SB season. I thought it was his rookie year. OK. Well his rookie year he still did OK with the defense.

  8. strandoftds says:

Kyle Orton is still a average QB. And far worse when it`s 3rd down situations. His days as a Denver Bronco are coming to a close.

  9. royalbroncofan1 says:

I was a big Cutler fan and was bummed when he wanted to leave, and when it was announced we got Orton out of the deal, it felt like someone let the air out of my tires. (talent lost vs talent gained).
McD left a bad taste in my mouth right off the bat.
Still though McD and KO initially did well to get us going in ’09.
After that though. the wheels came off the wagon.

KO must have a bad taste for Florida QB’s as he lost his job to Grossman and now even though he’s still the starter, has TT looking over his shoulder. He did get the QB job back from Grossman in ’07, but it was more that Grossman lost it due to poor performance.
I don’t dislike KO, think he’s a stand up guy and as henryac mentioned think he’s a good relief pitcher.

We are only boycotting week1. Not the draft or the rest of the season. According to cincy forums and Detroit we have over 100 000 agreeing to boycott. And it’s only been 2 days of it being posted. So we reach 50 000 yeas a day come week1 were looking good. It does look like we are being childish but so are they. Hopefully the media will catch onto this and Force the owners and players to see. And we won’t have to boycott.

  11. Vibe05 says:

I am not at home right now. I’m on my phone here. But as I said earlier I will copy and post it to broncos country. All I can do is ask for you to check it out. Before you judge. I hope it stays up on our forum for at least aweek before they pull it. If they wanna ban me then so be it.

  12. royalbroncofan1 says:

Looking at all the QB’s coming out this year, Locker is the only one who reminds me somewhat of JE when he came out. Very athletic and a powerful arm. Needs work with accuracy. JE was not the most accurate when he came out as most remember. We’ll see if the Broncos make a move for him. It doesn’t appear the triumvirate is settled with our QB position.
We’ll soon find out if it’s a ploy or not.

  13. henryac says:

The thing I see different with Locker vs. Elway when he came out is the “it” factor. JE had it, it was pretty obvious even then, but I’m not sure Locker does. All of the QBs in the draft seem to be missing it somewhat, some more than others. That is one reason why several draft scouting services don’t have a QB rated with true 1st Rnd talent. This year is a crap shoot at QB since there is no “sure-fire” candidate who looks solid enough to bet the house on. Denver might be better served by stocking up on Defense this year, going with what they have at QB, and hoping for better pickings next year.

  14. royalbroncofan1 says:

Good point henryac…. we would be better served with a LB with 2nd rd selection. I’m still hopeful we get Dareus with the 1st rd selection.

  15. strandoftds says:

Kake Locker is a bland QB. He might be able to scramble for time to time but has a inaccurate arm. He reminds me of a pour mans Jake Plummer. Plummer was accurate and Locker isn`t.

  16. strandoftds says:

ooops. Jake Locker not kake. HaHa!!

  17. strandoftds says:

In the 2nd round I`m thinking a LB and S. thinking it through still.

  18. royalbroncofan1 says:

What’s got me curious strand is this second private workout with Locker.
I didn’t see Locker play much except game vs. USC.
I would say his arm is stronger than Plummers but yeah accuracy is the biq question.

  19. strandoftds says:

Plummer had some deicent zip on the ball and was really good rolling out but ya, Locker doe`s have a strong arm.

  20. strandoftds says:

And for the Bronco`s to have two workouts is odd I think. I still say it`s a smoke-screen. Locker will be gone by the late 1st round.

  21. henryac says:

There are some folks who think somebody may trade back into to the late1st Rnd to get him. That will be fun to watch! He could be the 3rd or 4th QB off the board in the 1st Rnd, a lot of people taking some big chances with a boatload of money!

  22. sndvl says:

This should make all MD fans happy!

In his latest chat on NFL.com, senior columnist Vic Carucci discussed a number of NFL Draft topics, including who he believes is the top prospect in the 2011 class. Here’s a hint — it wasn’t Auburn QB Cam Newton  or LSU DB Patrick Peterson .
“I think the best player in the draft is [Alabama DT] Marcell Dareus ,” Carucci said. “He is a dominant, game-changing force with tremendous strength, agility, and versatility. He will make an immediate difference for whatever team selects him.”

  23. sndvl says:

Charley Casserley has A.J Green going #1overall…

  24. sndvl says:

Former Denver Broncos running back Laurence Maroney was charged Wednesday with misdemeanor marijuana possession, the St. Louis Post-Dispatch reported .
The St. Louis circuit attorney’s office brought the charges more than two months after Maroney was one of several people arrested when officers smelled marijuana during a traffic stop and found weapons in a vehicle.
The Broncos released Maroney on March 3, making him an unrestricted free agent just six months after the New England Patriots traded the former first-round draft pick. According to the Post-Dispatch , he faces anywhere from probation to a year in jail.
The Associated Press contributed to this report.

  25. samurai713 says:

    just in time…

  26. strandoftds says:

    So Marcell Dareus it is!

  27. 1nOnlyTRB says:

Hahaha, I stand corrected bay. Looks like I was talking out of my butt but for some reason I thought it was Orton in the superbowl…im pretty sure many pro ortons used to say that about him when he first got her to win some of us over to the dark side. Based on the assesment sounds like he hasnt improved that much since his rookie season,

Funny enough, out of all the QBs, I believe in Locker the most. He was at the top of his game last year and was a sure fire first rounder…and now fading. I believe he can get it done more than the other QBs (even tho I wanna believe in cam). Locker might fall as low as 3rd round or go as high as top 15 … who knows … just as long as we dont take him cuz I want no offense this draft.

Heard about maroney like yesterday or a couple days ago. Didnt bother mentioning cuz as far as im concerned he was never a bronco. That was just another idiotic move by McD, the the nontalent whisperer. I campaigned for Marshawn Lynch for the longest, younger, going for a 4th round pick as well, and ran like a bruiser, some thing we needed in McDs power scheme…. but knowm he chose the dancer. I swear, McD knew how to pick the worst personell for his own system. How bout that Big Run by Lynch against the saints at the begining of last years playoffs. Never say never play right there.

Lets go PP, Paea, LeShoure/kyle rudolph, greg jones in 2011.

If you have not seen this video of Woodyard doin a spoof of Brian Dawkins YOU NEED TO SEE THIS. I thought it was very funny

  29. baylinorcrush says:

Before I call it a day, here is some stuff Elway said the last couple of days that I missed:

“Offensive line wise, we’ve got some good players there — you know, [Ryan] Clady coming off that knee injury and not having the year that he did the year before but still was a great player; and J.D. Walton and [Zane] Beadles who were rookies last year that played every down and played well, and they’re just going to get better; and we got [Chris] Kuper at right guard who’s a dominant guard. So offensively we feel pretty good. Obviously it hurts us to lose Demaryius Thomas to that Achilles injury but we’re hoping to get him back maybe halfway through the season.”

So, no mention of Harris? Does that mean he may be a goner like suggested here many times?

Now Demaryius out at least through mid season! Does that mean is it even worth keeping him on the PUP list rather than just putting him on IR right off the bat?

    Those are some valid questions….

  30. 1nOnlyTRB says:

I had a feeling harris would not be mentioned. Too bad. I liked him. Maybe its just that he didnt wanna speak on anyone who wasnt signed to the team. I dunno but I had forgotten about Paper Mache Thomas getting hurt for half the season sigh ….. he sure as heck aint no beast or beast replacement. Woulda been happier passing on WR last year for something more useful. But thats McD for ya. I wanna hold out hope but just know McDs lack of talent recognition … Im just about ready to give up on this guy before even giving him a chance….

    MrBroncoFan…

Yea man! It is actually posted on denverpost.com. Here is the article and video on Woodyard!!

Thanks guys but many bloggers did that vid first thing this morning.

  33. baylinorcrush says:

Another day, not another dollar in sight, haha, or a Bronco article….

  34. baylinorcrush says:

However articles about stupid players always abound though, like this one:

Louis Murphy became the third Raiders player to be arrested this offseason when he was charged with three misdemeanors in Gainesville, Fla., according to the Gainesville Sun.

Murphy was charged with possession of drug without a valid prescription, failure to obey a police officer and resisting arrest without violence.

Gainesville police said Murphy did not pull over despite being requested to do so early Sunday morning and instead drove to a city parking lot, where he and his passengers exited his Cadillac Escalade and walked away.

Murphy, according to the report, refused to show identification and wouldn’t put his hands behind his back when police attempted to put him in handcuffs.

Love it when it happens to stupid Raiders though, LOL.

  35. Kengro says:

So Elway says we dont have a franchise QB. Anyone who doesnt agree with that statement is foolish or wishful. Franchise QBs are someone you plan on building a team around for years to come. Someone who can and will do the things you want done on the football field. Fanchise QB’s are few and far between. My opinion is teams cant draft a franchise QB. 49ers Smith was drafted as a franchise QB. Same with Russel, Stafford, Flacco, Ryan and Bradford. Many times a QB is taken with a high draft choice and called a franchise QB. In realitly all they are is a franchise QB project. I dont know for sure if Tebow is this boat but he has been raised to this pedistal by some bloggers. Dont be disappointed TT fans. Tebow isnt there yet. He has not gotten the shot yet either. Give it some time. He many end up as a career backup or he may be the next great thing. All elway said is we dont have a franchise QB. We dont. Hopefully we have someone who will turn into one. Time will tell.

Alot of that article seemed to be negative on Tebows popularity with lack of major sucess. I agree with that totally but that is what we do as fans. We had a terrible season last year and Tebows performance was a bright spot for us. His preformance isnt why we lost those games. He is not a superstar but most of us want him to become one. Another instance of this is the hiring of John Fox. Most seem to love that choice because we know our defense is bad and this guy has turned teams around before. How about the fact that his team was the worst in the league last season. He had the players that he drafted and the schemes that he designed, that just didnt work for diddley last year. We want our teams to be sucessfull and sometime focus on possitives instead of negatives. Hope and opinions is what keeps sub par teams fans intrested. For the last few months, what have we been discussing……Who we hope our team drafts or what we think our team needs to do next in hope of being better next season.

  36. baylinorcrush says:

This article could fit us to a T, just replace “Dallas Cowboys” by “Denver Broncos”:

The Dallas Cowboys could use a veteran safety. Michael Huff, an Irving native, is a free safety and a free agent to be. He makes perfect sense for the Cowboys. “That’s home, but you never know what’s going to happen,” Huff said last week at the University of Texas’ Pro Day. “I’ve got to want to go there, but they’ve got to want me. There are a bunch of things that go into the process.” The Cowboys’ starting strong safety, Gerald Sensabaugh, will be a free agent. Their free safety, Alan Ball, is a converted cornerback who struggled at times last season. Dallas did not get in on the bidding for veteran safeties Bob Sanders or O.J. Atogwe, who were free agents before the collective bargaining agreement expired.

  37. baylinorcrush says:

Mix stupid players with the Dallas Cowboys and you get:

    Dez!

“You have to be worried about Dez, based on the stuff he’s been through and the history of having done it before, it’s kind of a pattern with him,” said one source at the Dallas Cowboys. “It’s not being able to take care of the things that you’d expect the normal 22 year old to be able to handle. Sometimes, it’s the simplest things. And a lot of it is not his fault, it’s because of the way he was brought up. He’s got a good heart, and the best intentions, but all this stuff happens and it takes away from that.”

It’s easy to see, in both the recent incident at the mall and with the hundreds of thousands of dollars in jewelry he bought, where it might be difficult for Bryant to get normal common-sense concepts that many people have.

The Cowboys’ concern is that things only get worse from here.

On one hand, this is a player who would do things on the field to make Cowboys officials say, “I’ve never seen that before.” On the other, he so clearly has what one source calls “a lack of life skills.”

What’s clear is that the organization wants to help him with that, and pave the way for a long career for Bryant with the team he grew up dreaming of playing for. The trouble is, for now, the Cowboys literally can offer him no help at all under the lockout.

Why bother giving players like those more money???? Really…

  38. baylinorcrush says:

Kengro, you make a lot of good points and I’m totally in tune with the Tebow thing as I discussed it yesterday, but about Fox’s record last year, keep in mind the owners litterally tied his hands in personnel decisions for finacial reasons and gave him absolutely no shot at succeeding, anyone following Carolina will tell you that, just trying to be fair and balanced here. But I get your point, in general fans grasp at straws to find some kind of solace in crappy times.

  39. baylinorcrush says:

So, what’s your take on how to handle the quarterback situation?

  40. baylinorcrush says:

Ok, probably went to work, so this would be my personal plan about it:

This season give Tebow a shot as a starter which he essentially earned late last year and if things don’t pan out bring in Orton as a relief pitcher for the second part of the season and since he is only good for half a season that’s all you could get out of him anyway.

For this year do not draft a QB, nothing very valuable to speak of in this year’s crop, rather wait for next year’s crop and if Tebow doesn’t work out this season then draft one.

As for Quinn, just like I said last year, let him go and carry just two QB’s to open up a roster spot. Quinn is so bad he would not be able to help in any shape or form as a backup if he had to step in, we would do just as well bringing anyone who is availabe at the time when and if our QB’s happen to go down.

Everyone needs a plan, that would be mine…

  41. baylinorcrush says:

And if keeping Tebow and Orton is too expensive for Mr B. or whatever salary cap there may be, then bring in Delhomme and trade Orton and insert Delhomme instead of Orton in my plan.

  42. strandoftds says:

Nice plan Bay. We`ve got to start somewhere. I`m of the belief of a two QB on the roster.

  43. 1nOnlyTRB says:

I agree with your assesment bay and as a tebow fan that is all I want. I just want the kid to get a shot. I don’t wanna sit in the dark while we have Orton as a QB and Tebow on the sidelines not knowing what the future holds especially since we know it aint Orton. I rather find out Tebow aint the one early than later but he needs to be given the chance. FULLY. no splitting time. No starting Orton and having Tebow compete for starter job by only playing with back ups and getting less reps. I just want us to give him the best chance to succeed, see how it goes, and based on his performance, move forward or nip it in the bud but I wanna know that before we go drafting another QB. If I had my way, Orton woulda been out the window a long time ago … with the QB evaluations going on lately and many realizing that the QBs in draft are average at best, if we had FA we could trade orton easily and get a much needed pick. Get rid of one QB eating up salary, and get a pick to make this team young again. I think all people want is for Tebow to have a chance which is why we talk about it so much and almost sound like we are hyping him and crowning him savior. He is not the savior, he could be but only if we give him a chance. But it doesnt seem like the top brass is hearing, so we keep screaming. I gaurantee you, if Tebow is announced the starter, the tebow hyping will stop, not the expectations but the constant chatter about him like we have the awesomest guy on the bench and he aint playing. Sink or swim, I wanna see tebow out there THIS YEAR. I was ready to see what the kid had, LAST YEAR, for the whole year. I like the throw em in there route. Only one way to give real experience. Just my opinion.

  44. strandoftds says:

And about your 6:52 A.M. post I mentioned that very thing a few days ago. It`s true. And with John Fox coming to Denver it will be a whole new ball game. Fox is working for a great NFL owner who wants to see his team succeed.

  45. strandoftds says:

Start Tebow and give the young man some experience. We are not going to do any better without him. Lets be real. He`s gotta start some time. Do we really think that we are gonna go anywhere with Kyle Orton this year. I don`t think so. Give Tim Tebow a shot day one and we won`t be disappointed. This will be a few years proccess. Might as well start him now. Tims ready, he proved it with the last three games.

  46. baylinorcrush says:

I believe the carrying three QBs thing will eventually go the way of the dinosaurs.

All you have to do is see where the game is evolving with all the new rules aimed at protecting the QB.

Instead, carrying more RBs than teams used to is where it’s at now.

You need to keep up with the times in this league and adapt with the changes of the game.

And with Elway and Kubiak we already only carried two QBs many moons ago anyway.

And Quinn, give me a break, him coming in in an emergency situation gives me about as much comfort as the thought of Simms doing so…

  47. baylinorcrush says:

    Hint:

We are gonna load up at RB’s.

  48. strandoftds says:

I never did like a three QB roster. A wasted roster spot.

  49. strandoftds says:

I figure one RB in the draft and one in FA whenever that is.

  50. strandoftds says:

I wonder how Lendale White is holding up. I hope he`s healing up fine. I like the guy. I wonder if John Fox will keep him. Just hoping that Lendale works his tail off. He`s known to be lazy at times.
