I flew out out yesterday late in the afternoon for a business meeting at K.C. and heard about the firing while driving to a dinner meeting. Then, from 8 a.m. until I got on a plane this afternoon at 4:40 p.m. K.C. time, running through the airport at the speed of turtle, I didn’t have a minute to blog or even see news updates.
I’ll be watching the news tonight like everyone else and will join in the speculation. I posted on Sunday’s blog to move here and had to laugh as I was accused of not (coming clean) all year on Coach McDaniels, and it was pretty funny in its context because you guys know I’m a homer, win-(L)word or Draw. I always have a glass half full….even if it’s going to take time.
So my Blue & Orange (behind) never says die, and honestly we are short some players on defense to dominate consistently and I didn’t have as much of a problem with coach McDaniels’ schemes on offense as many of you did, BUT again I look at things a little differently and not through rose-colored glasses or with fairy dust sprinkled all over it.
You all keep me clean on that and I respect your opinions. SO, let’s speculate.
Who do you like? Off the top of my head, I like a guy that coached John Elway and was a big part of winning around here, Jim Fassel.
Who’s your pick?

The one problem that bothers me the most is the spygate II. It just bugs the hell outta me. Mr. Bowlen doesn`t deserve that negativity. Thats not in his nature to be called a cheat. Thats why Dungy would be a great choice as GM.
Absolutely Bay. Without a good dream a man cannot stretch himself.
INTEGRITY, that’s why I got Dungy over Parcells.
Integrity is far more richer than anything I`d say. With integrity everything that you can call good follows. Dungy can help us across the board.
Breaking news! Urban meyer just stepped down. Already talks about him coming over to denver to be reunited with tim tebow.
Greatness007 brought that up here first a couple weeks ago, we’ll have to stay tuned on that one.
Urban Meyer will not be the next Denver Broncos head coach. Count on it.
Meyer said, “I have been a Division I football coach for the last 25 years and, during that time, my primary focus has been helping my teams win titles,” Meyer said. “I have thoroughly enjoyed every minute of it, and I am a fierce competitor to my core. At this time in my life, however, I appreciate the sacrifices my 24/7 profession has demanded of me, and I know it is time to put my focus on my family and life away from the field. The decision to step down was a difficult one.”
“But after spending more than two decades motivating and celebrating the young men I’ve been so proud to coach, I relish the opportunity to cheer for my three terrific kids as they compete in their own respective sports. I know how fortunate I am to be in a position to make this choice and to have a family that is as loving and supportive as my amazing wife and children have always been.”
Yeah I just read that, it sure doesn’t sound like he wants to get back in football anytime soon, and as far as I’m concerned it’s a good thing, taking a shot on a non NFL coach to come into the NFL and be a head coach is a huge gamble, something I’m sure Bowlen will stay away from at all cost.
And this is a good time for Urban to relax for awhile. He has had some health issues in the past.
What is with all the GM talk? We are not sure if Denver is even considering a new GM. Do I think we need a GM first sure but we don’t know that for sure. I prefer a HC with a proven track record and I would love for Wade Philliips to come back as DC because he may not be a good HC but he is an outstanding DC and would be perfect for our 3-4 defense. There are not very many DC available that are as good running a 3-4.
Biggyboy660,
The reason for the GM talk is simple. The Broncos’ operating model is broken. The root cause for what ails the franchise is structural deficiencies. We need a bona fide GM or personnel expert who has control over personnel and contracts.
Having the head coach whether it be Mike Shanahan, Josh McDaniels, or whoever the Broncos bring in next as the one to have final say on all personnel matters has not worked and will not work. That is why the Broncos need a new GM or at least a new personnel executive that has final say and ultimate control on personnel matters. He should also be the one to hire the new head coach with input from Joe Ellis and Pat Bowlen.
We do need a GM who could make all the good sound decisions on personnel matters for sure. Bring someone in.
Adam Shhefter on ESPN just reported that there is NO WAY that Urban Meyer will be the next coach of the Denver Broncos.
Great responses as usual. Was interesting to hear Glazers comments from Fox Sports about the arguments between coach McDaniels, Champ and DJ and then the assistant coached taking it on the chin. The player arguments struck me as odd as you never argue with the Head coach in public or he doesn’t argue back in public but takes it off the field to be discussed. Hmmm
A lot will go unsaid, as we expect and know.
Tell you a quick story on coaching. I talked to Howard Schnellenberger when I left the Pro’s briefly about coaching. I love the game, still do, just have a passion for it. That’s why I try to help the little guys (football players) create good habits early.
After discussing it and thinking through it, I decided that when you first start coaching, your job is in someone else’s hands to lose, not your own. Therefore, I chose real estate and financing. If I worked hard, my destiny was always in my own hands. Plus, I didn’t really want to move all over the country finding a job after a head coach got fired. Maybe when my boys are a little older I might persue it. I could coach any O-line at any level. Love what I do today.
I like baylinorcrush and Mondono’s list. Any combination would great and it’s fun to speculate. I actually thought we’d get more thoughts as A LOT OF YOU wanted the coach fired.
There’s been some interesting comments made about the team and about what a coach has to work with coming in here. Elvis is back and that will help but we are a little shorthanded and still played decent defense in my estimation at times with a lack of depth and big guys up front that could put pressure on the QB.
I’m anxious to see how Coach Studesville does. This will be an intersting 4 game end to a crazy year….maybe the craziest I can remember??
Any more thoughts on HC, OC, DC, etc?
Hey, by the way, I’m (ALL IN) for John’s participation in/with the Team in any capacity. He’s a great mind and a FIERCE competitor. Let’s get him on ASAP, then decide what’s next….Coopster
Thanks Coop for your insite. Good knowledge from a O-Line perspctive as always. I`m curious to find out who our next HC is. It would be interesting if Studesville won out to finish the season. I hope we start Tebow at home.
Coop, thanks for your perspective on what it is like to be a coach vs. in real estate and the control of your own destiny thing and I fully understand it and respect it, but the big reason coaches do what they do is for power and possible fame, stuff you can’t get in real estate. What I’m saying is the risks are commensurate to the benefits. More risks taken, bigger nenefits in coaching, less risks taken less benefits in real estate
Hit wrong key and it posted before I was done. Anyway was just saying both jobs could net you good amounts of money if you are good at it but by being willing to give up on the control of your destiny in the job with the coaching, if you succeed you will reach levels of satisfaction and fame never reachable in real estate, that’s all. It’s commensurate as I said, bigger risks, bigger rewards.
@ bay… i dunno man… you kind of made coaches sound like power hungry ego maniacs. i think there are a lot of coaches out there that just really enjoy the challenge of battling wits with other coaches. if power and fame are all youre interested in then there are WAY better options out there than coaching which i would imagine is a VERY trying, stressful, and time consuming job! so i would have to disagree with you on this one. i think the majority of coaches do it because the love coaching, not for fame or fortune! and no im not playing devils advocate with ya this time.
Ray, feel free to disagree with me I just did the same with you on the next blog, haha. Of course they are a multitude of other reasons people get into coaching like just to teach the kids by example, but at the NFL level, when those head coaches reach the top, there is no doubt in my mind that the power aspect of it becomes very important, look at Shanahan, McD, Belicheck, Parcells, Reid, Carroll, Kubiak and Lewis, they all had or have full power over coaching, drafting and all personnel decisions, everything, they are basically on a power trip over the team, just saying.
ya to each his own!
and i do agree that some coaches probably are in it for those reasons but i dont think thats necessarily the majority of coaches!
What about Bill Cowher or John Gruden?
First wanted to say im not sure why so many Bronco fans are ready for Tebow. Tebow, now, Really? I think the only thing on our team that looks good is Kyle Orton, who is in his mid 20s. Why the rush, I know he doesn’t have that atractive QB name but I think hes playing just as good as ANY QB this year. As far as the GM, COACH debate, I personally would like to see:
HC: Gruden
GM: Dungy
DC: Wade Phillips or Nolan, or Keith Butler
and have Elway there in any role available.
Cowher will be HC of the Panthers next year.
The broncos are still paying mike shanahan and will likely end up paying mcdaniels as well. With this said how much money will Mr. Bowlen spend on his next head coach. I think he will shy away from big names coaches. Here is my coach that deserves a gig again Brian Billick. Its funny how quiet his name been this past years. I would make him GM and HC. He has plenty of knowledge about player personnel and coaching. Just look at what did in Balitmore, yes he had ozzie there but you gotta give the guy some credit now.
I can tell you one thing for certain, after the McD debacle and the 14 years of Shanny where both were in charged of litteraly everything, one thing we will not see here under Bowlen again is an organization where one man is the head coach and oversees all personnel moves like a GM. We will have a separate GM and HC with the HC having no final say in any personnel matter, that will be the GM’s job, at least that’s what Ellis strongly implied in his press conference and anything less would show they haven’t learn a thing, that is just not the case, Ellis fessed up publicly to where they messed up giving all that authority to McD.
The word in Dove valley is the Broncos are not affraid of spending big money on a new HC. The only thing they are concerned about right now is getting back to being a winning organization. Winning is far more important than saving money on some cheap run of the mill coach.

You Keep on teaching good habits to the Little Guy’sand when your ready I hope you re-join The Broncos as OL Coach. Coach Cooper sounds pretty good to me.
When Josh McDaniels started in Denver the fans started in on Him immediatley with insults and the amount of disrespect was to much for me to take at times, I can’t imagine what He was feeling. He may never get that back.
But now it seem’s just looking at the atmosphere around Dove Valley and in the press room, when Coach Studesville show’s up it seem’s everybody straightens up a little and just the way Coach Studesville holds Himself and presents Himself, This Man Commands respect. The more I see the more I like Him. I hope The TEAM rally’s behind Him like I think they will. I don’t even care if they win another game, ok ok I care but I think Coach Studesville has something that some people are just born with and we all know thats rare. There’s not as many True Leaders out there as we might think, but there is a lot of posers. (Gruden ehcoughcough)
Hey one thing I hope Coach Studesville does different this week is run the ball on First Down. You knopw how I am about controlling the Linebackers with the threat of running on first down. Let’s see what Choach Studesville does If anyone will I think it’s Coach Studesville.

I know I’m obsessed with The Broncos running the ball on fist down , I wanted to try and illustrate why with some stats, that is after they finally posted the gamebook late Thursday. I know your annoyed already but hear me out…I’ve seen this pattern for about five or six years now.
The Broncos last week had 23 first down play’s, on thirteen play’s They called a run and 10 play’s They called a pass play. Sounds pretty darn good and balanced right? Well when you look a little closer you see something that totally correlates with the way the last few games have gone, i.e. (coming out like gangbusters then fizzled.) 1st qtr 3runs, 2nd qtr 7runs, 3rd qtr 3runs, 4th qtr 0runs on first down. Oh and there is more.
I said The Broncos called 10 pass play’s on 1st down, and on 8 of those 10 pass play’s they were incomplete and one went for a Sack. So 9 of those 10 plays went for 0 yards or a loss. Which put’s The Broncos behind with a 2nd and 10. Now we all know Orton had a bad game and it happens but that‘s not what I‘m getting at.
What I’m trying to illustrate is All of our run play’s on first down went for positive yards maybe only 2 but positive yards none the less, and only 1 of 10 pass play’s on first down went for positive yards. I think this is a huge reason why The Broncos go 3&out so often and They don‘t control the TOP. Very often.. If you can’t use the threat of running the ball on first down no matter how many yards you get, then a play action pass on second or third down’s means absolutely nothing. And if your passes on first down go incomplete then Your TEAM is behind the proverbial Gun. Do it often enough and your TOP. Looks like this, Denver 22:46 and kansas city 37:14.
COOP! I’ve seen this pattern for quite a while and I hope Coach Studesville does too.

Hey do you have anyone in Arizona who can give us a Guest Scouting Report on The Cardinals?
Rick Dennison-
He’s an old school orange crush LB. That gives him major points right there! Now, considering the more serious side of things, every unit Rick coached at Denver excelled. His Special Teams units excelled. His offensive line units excelled. He’s excelling as an offensive coordinator in Texas. Let’s not forget, he also knows a little bit about 3-4 Defenses.
Theres no doubt in my mind that Cooper knows a lot more about him than I do, but he’d be my first choice.
Didn’t you play with him Coop?
Sincerely,
Dennis in Idaho
you know your stuff Al Wilson 4 Mayor, He also played TE for Colorado State. I’m right with ya on your choice cause This Man know’s football.
Only Jonh Gruden can revive this horrible bunch
ONLY JONH GRUDEN Can revive this sorry bunch.
Only John Gruden Can save this bunch
monodono YOU know YOUR stuff. Great analysis. To add, the lack of running on 1st down answers as to why Broncos are in the tops of getting to the Red Zone, but rank low in actually SCORING TDs once we get there.
RUN THE BALL!!!!
