What’s after Detroit?

November 6th, 2007 - 11:00am by mark_cooper

Let’s keep the season in perspective. It’s tough to watch a game as lopsided as the Detroit game. It hurts because you want YOUR TEAM to win and if you didn’t want YOUR TEAM to win, you wouldn’t be a TRUE fan. If you didn’t get upset you wouldn’t be a true fan. If you didn’t care we wouldn’t be blogging. :o )

I like many of you get upset with the “L” word. I’ve never had that word programmed into my mind as I played sports my entire life and I still compete daily in my real estate business for new business.

Many of you do too, on a day to day basis, in some small way. We’re all competitors.

“L-ing” isn’t in my vocabulary and it shouldn’t be in yours. I use words like set-back or ran-out-of-time. Really though, the reason I went through the above drill, so-to-speak was because after I played for the Broncos, I went to play for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers where our record was as follows.

1987/4-11
1988/5-11
1989/5-11

Talk about tough, that’s tough, winning a total of 14 games in 3 seasons.

That’s why I’m having so much fun reading the papers and listening to the news and blogging this season because I know what it’s like and how different a town is (feels & thinks) that only wins 4 or 5 games in a season.

Just one or two injuries on a team can ruin a season for most NFL teams. We’ve had MANY more than our share and personally I was wondering if it was going to (or really when) would it show up. Well, it has.

We’re not firing anyone.  We’re playing with what we have and going to do the best we can under the conditions presented because you can’t change injuries or cry about them. It’s a violent game and unfortunately part of the game.

Mark, I am not sure who is to blame for the injuries this year but it has to be trainers or lack of being prepared? there are lots of teams that play harder then we are that do not have the injuries.. Also we weren’t playing well before the injuries. The 3 wins we have are from elam in the last sec’s of the games. I know a win is a win but that type of win is not going to get you to the big game. Am I wrong??? You played the game so do you really think with the way we are playing we would have a chance at all of wining the SB?
Me and my whole family put a lot of time, money, love and emotion in this team year after year and I do plan on my team making it to the play offs every year and even the SB every so often. Is that to much to ask??
anyway great to hear your views..
broncos please beat KC by 70+ points and I think I can feel okay for a bit..

I’m with you all the way Mark. Only when we have our players healthy, can we really make a good run at a winning season. No team is going to win, every single year.. Every team has a set back year or two. Well, this is ours.. Next year, things will be drastically different.. Just you wait and see.

where is everyone at today?? I hope next year is better but it won’t change with the same staff and players in there..

Dear mark,I have been a bronco fan since 1976. Injuries has hindered the broncos wins this year but the broncos have something to build for. The team is young and the broncos have a really good quarterback in Jay Cutler.Fron what I have seen so far he look like he will develop into another John Elway. So you and the rest of the broncos keep your heads up.

  5. mstarnes9999 says:

Look at it this way….it’s not like anyone else is going to beat the Pats this year.

    Hey Mark,

Great to hear from you. I like your perspective and I share in it. Injuries are a big part in the game. It’s obviously going to be a struggle with that many key personnel out. However, I don’t understand this knee jerk reaction to every obstacle that comes up. Injuries? It’s the trainer. Defense struggles? Bates. Offense don’t put up points? Shanahan. 3 – 5 now? Fire Shanahan. I’m not pretending to know what the anwser is. I certainly want to respect those that voice their opinions..I just put my faith in a organization that knows winning! It’ll get corrected.

    GO GET EM’ BOYS!!!

Of course, we are going to play out the season. 8-8 is a possibility and might be enough to win our division. They only way this is going to happen is to win the remaining games within our division. This is going to be very hard based on the way we played S.D. in Denver. Here goes, beat S.D., Oakland & K.C. on the road. Beat K.C. in Denver. Johnson is not playing Sunday so, if we can get some things together, we could feasibly win in K.C. Oakland on the road is also a real possibility. K.C. in Denver = a MUST. As far as S.D. goes, I don’t think we’ll win that one. So that’s 3 more wins. Now, beat Houston & the Vikings in our last home game. That’s 8 wins. If we can beat Tennessee, that’s 9 wins. O.K., for the above to happen we must:

Make some freaking third downs when we need them.

Stop the other team from making 3rd downs when they need them.

Get rid of the defense we’ve been playing and go to a more agressive, pass-rushing defense. Sit that fat tub of goo Sam Adams, obviously, he can’t stop the run !!! Understand, with Dumervil in there the other team just runs right at him because he is so light. Put Dumervil in for pass rush only.

Turn Cutler loose to either sink or swim. If he fails, he’ll learn from it.

Shanny has to sit Brandon Marshall down and explain the importance of CATCHING the freaking ball every time he can.

Use those quick slants to Stokley earlier in the downs.

Feature Selvin Young & pass it to him 10 times a game.

Stop having to call time-outs because the right personnel are not on the field. Heck, it’s week 8, don’t we know by now ??

Get rid of the special teams coach asap. Anybody can coach our “special” teams much better than they have been so far.

Get Scheffler more involved. Graham can’t catch a cold !!

Tell Travis to fess up now so he can be back by week 8 or 9 next year.

Going forward we need some younger coaches with some very progressive ideas for defense & special teams. We have good personnel, we need good schemes.

Shanny must step down and become the General Manager !! He keeps saying “…It’s my fault…” O.K., let’s listen to him and go a different way. Obviously, the rest of the league has caught up to the Mastermind’s system and can shut it down = to wit: we are not scoring enought points, haven’t bee for years. 3 pts. vs. S.D., 7 pts. vs. Detroit, etc. etc.

Can someone explain how the heck we beat the Steelers ????

  8. Tlynch says:

First of all…You are way to narly of a dude to be using the :o ) emoticon. ;) Secondly, I get what you are saying but we Broncomaniacs are a spoiled bunch who saw the 9-7 finish last year as a debacle.

My only thing is winning at home. If the Broncos go 6-10 or 5-11…that fine, I can live with that, BUT all those friggin wins better be at HOME!

That’s my take anyway. Nice blog, good read. Take it easy man.

Cmon now guys …. Whats all this talk about next year about. We are one game out of first place in our division nd the year is only half over. The chargers play the colts this week and we are going against the chiefs who should be without larry johnson. So, we very much could eb tied for FIRST i repeat FIRST place after this week. And for the injuries, the will eventually heel ,we just have to get through this injury set back THIS SEASON. When we are somewhat healthy we can beat anyone(Steelers are a top 3 team in AFC , we beat them without javon walker and travis henry?… So i dont know why everyone is talking abou next season when we are very much alive THIS SEASON.. Keep the faith

I like the blog …… I like what your saying broncoohowie too

Let’s keep things in perspective here, like Mark says. Yes, this season hasn’t been what we’ve hoped for thus far but it’s far from over as with a win over Kansas City, who will be without Larry Johnson, we virtually eliminate them from wild card contention because then they’ll have to go to Denver and try to get a win against us where they traditionally struggle. I’m confident that, so long as Cutler plays, we’ll win convincingly at Arrowhead. Go Broncos!!!

  12. foreigndog says:

My gut feeling tells me that the Broncos will prevail this weekend against KC. I think our Broncos still have plenty left in the tank. We as fans, have been spoiled over the many great years, time to back our boys up during their tough time, GO BRONCOS!

Im sorry mark, but lets face it,this team has been undisciplined and unprepared (physical conditioning) from the start. Shanahan since the loss of Kubiak and Alex gibb is just not the same. They demanded performance from the guys. Shanny should resign after this season and lets get a tough disciplinarian in there that demands performance from the players and coaches or you dont play or get paid. We are seeing the results of a lack of discipline and soft philosophy that currently prevails in the organization primarily the coaching, hence the players dont buy in to what they are doing and the result is what we have. Injuries are unfortunate but not an excuse for losing by the remaining members of the team.Pros rise to the occasion if they are motivated (coached). It starts and ends at the top.

  15. mark_cooper says:

14 responses and they ran the gamit. We have a shot at the Division. Will we win it? I’m not sure, mainly due to the number of injuries we’ve been discussing. There’s going to be a few shake ups, there’s going to be a few changes here and there but we’re going to have to finish the season with who we have primarily.

Folks, there’s no one to blame for injuries. I had them and every player I’ve ever know that played in the NFL had them at the peak of their physical condition.

Have you ever been in a car wreck? Well that’s what it’s like out there. You condition yourself to have a coat of armour around you, primarily muscle to defend yourself, but the body is only meant to bend in certain directions.

Could we beat the Cowboys or the Patriots or the Colts? Not right now and probably not this year the way were playing and I know you’ll get tired of me saying this, with “THE INJURIES” we have.

So let’s make a deal. I know it’s frustrating to watch your/mine/our team go through this but they ARE “our team”, so let’s stick this out a while and see how they can improve and let’s see if we can win the Division at the very least. Let’s make that the only goal going forward and see what happens.

I forget who said it, but yes, we are spoiled in Denver with the success. In Tampa they just wanted us to win a few more each year when we were 5-11. Imagine what will be said if that was the case?

Hey you guys, I’m running down to the last University of Miami game to be played in the Orange Bowl this weekend for a big Alumni event.

I’ll Blog you back after the K.C. win…..Go Broncos!!

    broncos_for_life,

Sorry about the previous blogs blow up and the late reply away from the computer for awhile. I didn’t mean to insinuate that you were a poser. I, as well, was just venting. I have been a Bronco fan since I can remember. That goes back to Craig Morton, Rick Upchurch, Gradishar, Chavous etc. (I was born in ’73 so that’s about as far back as I can go). However, since my parents moved us to Tucson in the mid 80s I haven’t been privileged to go to many games in Denver. Also because I tend to have to “fix” items in my home that get “broken” when the Bronco’s lose, I tend to be short funds. That said I am a true fan, not a band wagoner! Even if the Broncos dont win another game this year, I’ll will be glued to the TV praying for one more touchdown. I am predicting a miraculous turnaround and a victory over the Pats in the AFC Championship. (REMEMBER 1980 USA HOCKEY! DO YOU BELIEVE IN MIRICLES?) I do!

  17. wanagi says:

AZ..I feel you on that…things just break..and i can’t remember, what happen….the last time i broke something was the afc championship game against the steelers..when plummer threw his second pick..I picked my tv up and threw through our front window…and no my wife didn’t console me…

also believe in us turnin our season around…right after we eat the Chiefs up..score will be 28-17

  18. George Bush says:

It is great to get the opinions of a true sportsman and warrior, who knows what the game is all about.

In football, as in rugby, injuries are part of the game. Every time you play is like your body is taken apart, and it takes time just to get your body comfortable again. Unless you have played the game at the top level you just cannot know what it is like.

    Go Broncos
