Turnovers and Penalties

September 13th, 2011 - 8:42am by mark_cooper

We all know this is going to be a tough year as we’ve talked about it all offseason. Penalties and turnovers can be the difference in a three-point game. We still have some of the same issues we’ve had with inconsistencies on both sides of the ball and little depth right now so we have to play a more disciplined game.

I saw good things and some not so good things last night. Red zone is still a problem and the running game really never got going, so we resorted to passing and we’re effective enough to stay within three points. We have two more games to get the kinks out before we head into the meat of the schedule.

Loved the intensity of the players and the defense and the blitz packages I saw. Dawkins was the Dawkins we all know he is and we had a lot of young players on the field last night at right tackle, tight end, at wide receiver and on defense and I liked what I saw in all of them. SURE we have a lot of work to do but baby steps are in order and I know how some of you don’t have the patience for that BUT you’re going to have to to see this team turn the corner in coming years….period.

P.S.: The 63-yard kick was meaningless to me because it was against us…call me a homer?

Go Broncos!!

I must admit I was not able to stay up for the game but it is recorded and as soon as I get home I am going to watch it. I hope I can see all the things that everyone is talking about on both sides of the ball. I am still learning. I am a Tebow supporter BUT I think it is sad that the fans didn’t support the team. I don’t think that is what Tebow would want at all. The fans are fickle and must be fairly new because in all of my research into the team one thing stood out. In Elway’s first year weren’t the fans chanting for the backup instead of him? Aren’t you glad the coaches didn’t listen? I in no way support Orton because I have said from my very first post that he has no passion for the game but if he is human wouldn’t support go further than ridicule? Bay, you are the best and I knew almost all of us qualified for the wall of shame cuz we lost. I will be watching the game closely and looking at faces and expressions with the pause button lol. I know Orton only turned down the Miami offer because his wife was so close to having the baby and I also know he does not care about the fans because he said so. Someone ealier said that Brandon suppoted Tebow and flipped sides, that only strengthens my post from an earlier blog that Orton wants to pad his and Brandon’s numbers this year and couldn’t care less if the Bronco’s win or not just as long as they get big contract offers next year.

Dissapointing to lose the first game at home and it always hurts more against the Raiders. I do think there is a slight overreaction from some bloggers here. New coach, bunch of new players, little depth, no time to bring team together because of the owner/player situation earlier this year. considering all this we had all the ingredients for falling apart against oakland like last year under McDaniels. This time round there seemed to be a little more fight in the team and despite many individual mistakes it was close to the end. I am not keen on Orton but that drop was the kind of thing that happens once in a career for all QB’s no matter how good they are(allright maybe it has happened 3 times to Orton already) . That was a big momentum swing but we could have had another shot at it in the end if the defense had made one last stop… without going on a massive ramble my point is this: let’s all see another game or two before we draw conclusions about where we are as a team and how the season will end. I for one do not believe we are in the Andrew Luck sweepstakes yet.

I will still stick to my season prediction of 6-10 after watching this game.

    Nice post. London…

I for my part would like to rescind my 10-6 season prediction.

Oh well. I had really hoped to see the team that came out against Seattle in the preseason. I really under estimated Oakland and think that we are not giving them enough credit for their defense and running game. Of course they suck and I hate their guts; but I would trade their D line for ours today.

I was the most excited to see what our defense was going to do. It is now obvious that the strength of the defense is the D line and everyone else feeds off that power and push.

Tebow would at least make the rest of this season fun to watch.

Some thoughts on Monday night …

For a lot of reasons, that was better than last year – right??

On Defense – nobody on the DL could have started last night for Oakland – that in a nutshell is why we lost … since our DL is so poor, the Raiders could set up a blocking scheme to neutralize Doom and Miller … I didn’t hear Doom’s name called once … Miller made a couple of plays because of his speed … Dawkins and Bailey are truly warriors – seeing Bailey keep Mc (#20) from that touchdown was classic … Goodman should have been on the same train as Jones – the man CANNOT tackle … our weaknesses were exposed and taken advantage of – now we have to correct them – it will take time (drafts) ,,, and for all the talk of being weak up the middle, it was the outside speed that killed us … and, yet, they played with a lot of HEART … hope they can sustain that – they should win the 6 games I predicted …

Is there a way to get to the current BLOG without going through a bunch of them???

Is there a CURRENT BLOG button or something of that nature???

    ***IF NOT THERE SHOULD BE***

HINT, HINT for those running the SITE!!! THANKS

  8. WieminCA says:

On offense – you don’t build a running attack overnight – or over an offseason, obviously … there was NONE … our OL played like it contained 2 second year men and a rookie – which, of course, it does … a lot of Orton’s problems stemmed from being constantly under duress … too many dropped passes … too many attempts to thread the needle … who know who was at fault on the interception – that was one play that Lloyd seemed lost in space … and the fumble by Orton – I’ve seen that happen to GREAT QB’s, but why did it have to happen at that time?? … and yet, the offense played with great HEART … they kept at it, and kept in the game, which we all were amazed at … there was no doubt who was the best team, and still, there we were at the end … I don’t think the Raiders ever felt the outcome was in doubt, but – there we were, still kicking …

Or, would you rather be in Atlanta, or Kansas City, or Indianapolis, or Miami, or Minneapolis, or St Louis, or Seattle, or Pittsburgh today … imagine how those fans feel …

  9. imready says:

Lose the first game of the season by three points and you just can’t stop whining, calling everyone out including John Elway. Why don’t you losers take you whining else where, you sure aren’t Bronco fans. Go get youselfs a pacifier, you are pathetic.

  10. WieminCA says:

On penalties – we committed too many, mostly because we were outmanned …
the raiders committed too many because they’re arrogant bullies … for every defensive holding or pass interference penalty they did get, there should have been 2 more called … their DBs hold and push and maul on every play – I guess figuring it’s cost-effective – they rarely get caught … it gripes the hell out of me to watch it … but at least we stood our ground and gave back as much as we took … it may be playground, but I’m glad we did …

  11. true2broncos says:

Has anyone else been UNDERWHELMED by the play of our rookie safety Rahim Moore???

I know the guy is young and it is still early – to hopefully a GREAT CAREER, but I was hoping to see more of him and from him on the field!!! There is still a good chance he will be a solid player and that is my wish for him and for the BRONCOS!!!

    GO BRONCOS!!!

  12. WieminCA says:

On Tebow – this screaming against Orton and for Tebow on this blog and in the stands is the most childish exercise in whining I think I’ve ever seen … one little thing goes wrong and all we hear is Tebow, Tebow … geeeez – give it a rest … the guy is not a miracle worker … Orton will get his time in the sun, and he will either succeed or fail … then, maybe Tebow … you guys sound like a bunch of spoiled kids who always get your way … it’s embarrassing … and it’s pathetic … grow up!!!

  13. arch4662 says:

We looked pretty pathetic on Def. last night. Offence was horrid…run game…there was none. And i dont blame our offensive line Orton help the ball for way to long and took sacks. i recorded the game and watched it again. Orton sucks badly. He cant get us into the endzone. He cant handle pressure. He is the reason we lost last night…maybe Tebow is the what we need maybe not, but something needs to change.

  14. Broncfalls says:

    WieminCA, (no dissrespect)

but….this is Orton’s 3rd year…he is getting and has had his time in the sun LOL! and if you wait paitently, some of these bloggers will let you know whether he has succeeded or failed…..

Sometimes you can’t simply say “..until the sun and moon are aligned perfectly you can’t judge Kyle..”

There’s enough tape on him as a Bronco for bloggers to decide success or failure….Actually, you can look at the Chicago tape of him also because it’s the same….

Just saying….people just have an opinion is all….just make a post, respect others and have a good day!

    GO GET EM’ BOYS!

i pesonally think that Elway07 should QB our Broncos! Lot of passion that girl has! LOL

Typical Orton preformance when the pressure is on. I said all summer that I wanted to wait until regular season started to see where the Broncos were at as a team. Well I found out last night. I always said a person cannot judge a team by their preformance in preseason. Orton in the red zone first half, 1st three bad passes FG, 2nd two or three bad passes & a sack another FG. Need a drive at the end of 2nd quarter Orton throws INT. On the first drive of the 4th quarter Orton (I couldn’t believe this one) drops the ball raiders recover end up with a TD. I’m not sure but I think Orton threw an INT in the 2nd half also. Can’t remember everything. By the way one of our captains had 3 holding calls against him (Kuper). Raiders ended up with 13 pts. after Bronco turn overs. My feeling is the Broncos should join the Lingerie league they might win a game (maybe). Didn’t see much difference from last year.

  18. Mustang says:

WieminCa… as Broncfalls says, no disrespect intended but…

It isn’t one little thing that has gone wrong. Ignore the hype from the preseason Orton supposedly practiced well. Rewind back to the regular season last year before they brought Tebow in… Orton hasn’t missed a beat. Good meaningless stats with little meaningful production. Orton is still throwing short on third downs, soiling himself when the pocket flinches, tripping over his own feet, shutting down for a split second when pressure comes and then quickly throwing an errant pass or throwing it away rather than standing tall and hoping the play develops, etc…

Additionally, Orton is not a winner. I had rather have someone that can charge their team up. Miami was lucky they didn’t get him. Henne, despite being a weaker overall passer commanded his offense and looked like he was inspiring his team despite the Tom Brady show. Orton doesn’t drive this team, or make other players better around him. In fact, the other players actually make him look better with some of their extra efforts. Even on that 80 yard TD drive, watch it again. The players did not look excited to be driving and did not look charged at the line. They were going through the motions of drills with skill and not passion. Orton is Ordinary Orton, and will do what he does best. Move the ball when nothing is on the line, and make decent reads when there is a pocket or the defense is playing prevent or soft coverage.

The defense looked good… but with no depth, they were exhausted with the game manager never managing the game or giving them some excitement or hope.

I guess some want to take away freedom of speech in Bronco country…. Good luck with that!

  20. 07elway says:

LOL @ Broncfalls – you crazy!! Me QB the Broncos… yeah that would be a sight to see. lol lol

By the way, I think I survived my lunch with a raider fan. Feeling a little queezy but I’m still alive! ahaha I would never have bought him lunch if he wasn’t such a cool guy. Was probably too nice to me… I know I wouldn’t have been! Next bet he wants to make is loser has to wear a jersey of the other team, I go that will NEVER happen. I’d rather buy him lunch for the rest of my life than put on a stinky raider jersey… he even had to wear his jersey to lunch, go figure.

Movin on to next week… I say we find our first W of the season, 23-17 Broncos all the way ;)

    Have faith Bronco Country…
    GO BRONCOS 2011!!!

  21. lonewolf7 says:

I think you’re on to him Mustang, Orton that is. I was at the game until the end. It was almost clearly, you know what you’re going to get and they know what were going to do . . . same story different season. I only hope they make some adjustments, as I’ll be there to support our team win or lose. Thanks for Decker’s spark. We nearly carried some momentum.

Fans will be fans no one should tell someone how they should root or not for their team, except when it is disrespectful to others or voilently physically harmful to someone innocently watching. Good luck Broncos! Lets adjust and come out with a better performance against the Bengals. GO BRONCOS!

  22. WieminCA says:

Yeah – why go over the old ground … it’s just that Kyle Orton has never had a “full” deck to play with … on the other hand, maybe Indianapolis hasn’t had one either, we just never knew it … anyway, I think it would be better for everyone’s psyche if we didn’t have to go through this … as for free speech, I’m the last one who’d want that to go away … but if Tebow is the “last” hope, and it doesn’t work out, where then do we turn …

  23. baylinorcrush says:

    Wiemin,

you just hit the nail on the head without knowing it, we would then know what way to go in next year draft, that’s what starting Tebow now would accomplish.

  24. Ohio says:

I didn’t even want to visit any of these blogs in fear of becoming irate at the responses to our dismal play from last night. Safe to say I’m disappointed more than anything. All the hype in the offseason, the stellar play of our D in the preseason not to mention the positive spin that was put on the coaching staff and the changes that will be made in an effort to show us a more inspired group on the field with an improved defense and revamped offense.

It was the same old story last night, a mirror image almost of what we went through against these guys last year and not just this team any team that played us last season. So uninspired last night, we didn’t match the intensity, we were out coached, out played and the Raiders were the much more physical team. I don’t know what else to say but it was just 1 game but what an unispiring 1 game. Now we are banged up and frankly I don’t know if we have the D to stop Ced Bens and the Bengals run game. I’ve lowered my expectations for this year. Just play Tebow so we know what we are working with going into the 2012 draft. Oh and is there anyway we can secure 2 first round picks that are in the top 10 so we can draft LeMichael James and Michael Floyd?

    Ugh, disappointed fan.

  25. Londonbronco30 says:

Baylin totally agree with your point
However as a new coach coming in to a new organisation you have to make some choices to where you think you can get stability and quick wins. Fox clearly declared a winner of the QB competion early beliving this would give him the best chance to win and I would think it is highly unlikely he is going to change his QB after one game. Doing that would lose him credibility quickly. He has to give Orton at least half the season to get it right. If Orton continues to stink it up (which he may) he will have to give Tebow a shot in 2nd half, so as you say, he will know if he has to draft or pick up another QB for next year.

  26. mark_cooper says:

Might be short on talent folks, Champ, Doom, Moreno, and Lloyd all on injury report this week worries me to death…nice posts and agree on Elway7 at the QB spot…one of smartest ladies I know.

Nice post londonbroncos30 for as bad a we played as a team and still be in a 3 point game at the end does say something to me. We have a lot of work to do on our pass sets as a O-Line and picking of the T-E’s and E-T’s stunts will make a big difference and shorter sets by the guards when they are power rushed.

It’s early and as we said the OTA’s would have helped us probably more than most teams in the league.

I like the 20-17 Broncos over the Bengals.

    Go Broncos…keep the faith.
