Turnovers and Penalties

September 13th, 2011 - 8:42am by mark_cooper

We all know this is going to be a tough year as we’ve talked about it all offseason. Penalties and turnovers can be the difference in a three-point game. We still have some of the same issues we’ve had with inconsistencies on both sides of the ball and little depth right now so we have to play a more disciplined game.

I saw good things and some not so good things last night. Red zone is still a problem and the running game really never got going, so we resorted to passing and we’re effective enough to stay within three points. We have two more games to get the kinks out before we head into the meat of the schedule.

Loved the intensity of the players and the defense and the blitz packages I saw. Dawkins was the Dawkins we all know he is and we had a lot of young players on the field last night at right tackle, tight end, at wide receiver and on defense and I liked what I saw in all of them. SURE we have a lot of work to do but baby steps are in order and I know how some of you don’t have the patience for that BUT you’re going to have to to see this team turn the corner in coming years….period.

P.S.: The 63-yard kick was meaningless to me because it was against us…call me a homer?

Go Broncos!!

The team will have another 15 attempts to show us they can play better. The orginization will have another 15 attempts to show us they are better.
The fans will have another 15 attempts to show that they are patient enough to wait for the season to unfold completely.
This blog will have another 15 weeks before it becomes dead silence on here.
I…I will have another 15 weeks of trying to watch Orton and trying to support him even when he messes up and not try to dog on him too much because this is a team sport and the fans aren’t helping him by booing him and he doesn’t have a running game and the defense can’t stop the run and all the while not supporting Tebow because if I do that makes me not a real fan of the Denver Broncos just some Tebowmaniac Florida Alumni.

The one thing that I would like to say is Tebow is a very humble person. I am sure that it hurts him a lot more (listening to this from the fans during the game) than it hurts the other players. To me, if this keeps up and the decision is ever made to put him in to play, the team will not respond to him just for such as this, and he has had nothing to do with this. The media created this, and the media is continuing to keep it going. Just like last night when Fox was asked about playing Tebow, he did not offer an answer. It was like he just ignored the question. All of this is going to hurt, if not ruin, Tebow in the long run, so it really needs to be curtailed some.

If and when they decide to play him, then let him get on the field and be the leader we know he can be and play to the point of making them wish he had been used sooner. If he had more than three games last year, he would have proven it then.

haha, no worries Broncfalls, I’m used to it.

Lots a good points you bring up.

The main thing I see is that EFX has brought all that QQ onto themselves so now it’s only fair that they are the ones taking the brunt of it. I mean first Tebow is made out to look like he is getting a shot at starting, then they put Orton on the trading block, only to then say Orton is miles ahead of everyone and is the starter for the regular season, and top that off with sprinkling a bit of Quinn moved ahead of Tebow for a couple games then Tebow moved back ahead of Quinn in another, and the mess is complete, so many mixed messages, my head is still spinning and so should the players’. Like Lloyd who all off season kept lauding Tebow to no end because he thought like a lot of us did that Tebow may be the starter only then to completely switch camp and lauding Orton ever since he found out he would be the starter, I mean, come, on, is this an efficient way to handle the most important position on your team?

This organization has shown zero direction as who they really want for their starting QB, it’s like may the one who is the least worse start, and that is no way to run this business.

Like I say, they stepped in a big cow pie and they fed the cows that dumped it, so good luck with that, and my QQ is as alive as ever.

  4. brian_schneider says:

O..R..T..O..N you gonna lead us to a win go Orton..hey hey go Orton!

Anyway, Cincy is going to be tough this week. I think we could have better luck with our pass rush this week but we have got to slow Benson down. I think Benson isn’t as good of a back as McFadden but we’ve got to tackle better as well. We need to win the turnover differential also.

  5. 1nOnlyTRB says:

Thats a strethc Bronctario … to say the crowd deflated the team … they came out cheering … the boo birds however came out like the often do, on bad plays, turnovers, or in the fourth quarter when u are getting spanked … do I agree with it … no … negativity never helps … positivity on the other hand goes a long way. People boo and chant for tebow because they believe that will get him in the game … it wont. Not until they decide. And maybe the decision will have to come from bowlen when ticket sales tank (IF we keep losing and playing the same QB).

And Orton will always get the blame … as well as the glory. Thats what being a QB means. Like when they say … “Orton is a winner” because of his record … they pretty much forgot about the rest of the fantastic bears team that made it happen. So when his play is this horrible … its his fault.

The problem is that we were made to believe (altho someone of us refused to agree) that Orton was soooooooo far ahead of the other 2. And it didn’t look like that … heck we passed in shutgun half the time which they get on Tebow for. And for all we know, Orton might be way ahead of the other 2 in which case means we are in real trouble … but theres only one way to find out … let em play. Sounds hectic … and it is … but this new fad of rebuilding without rebuilding and experimenting doesn’t work … u cannnot rebuild and win at the same time .. not unless u are a Good team, trying to get Great … but when u are a 4-12 team trying to get good … u better full on rebuild and look like u are trying instead of playing it safe. TRB

  6. Orange_Crusher says:

No, Orton gave up and deflated the home crowd…

Then the home crowd booed Orton and deflated everyone at home watching the nightmare from the safety and comfort of their cozy couches….

I booed Orton last year and chanted Tebow at Black Sunday and I applaud all the fans with balls on BLACK MONDAY who were not afraid to voice their opinion when and where it counts…

ORTON DESERVED TO BE BOOED! The Booers are probably the truest form of fans!

    BOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO ON ORTON!!!!

  7. brian_schneider says:

Nobody got upset with the Notre Dame crowd that chanted “Rudy.”

  8. true2broncos says:

You know what we lost the game by the 3 points we gave up just before the half! The missed field goal by Prater and the amazing booming kick by SEABASS!

That is the difference in the game – plain and simple!

We looked terrible at time, but so did they. We fumbled the wet ball. We gave up a punt block because of a missed assignment and we just fell short.

As far as TEBOW or ORTON:

Tebow could not even throw a spiral in the pre-season?!?!?!

Orton at times looked great. But Orton somehow has a problem getting it in the endzone?!?!?!

Anyway, if we are going to lose half of our games – we might as well lose them all and just get some “LUCK” next season!!!

I am down right upset that we let Cutler go so easily – and that entire talent base for that matter!!!

If we could go back and change things – I want: SHANAHAN, CUTLER, MARSHAL, HILLIS, and SHEFTLER back!!!

Disappointed fan . . . but still a true fan!!!

    GO BRONCOS!!! 8)

  9. DenverOranges says:

from what it looked like last night knowshands Mareno will be knowjob Mareno next year!

  10. brian_schneider says:

When you under perform and don’t even acknowledge the fans, even after the horrible lockout, that when you get an uprising of boos.

Same thing happens in government, when the people have finally had enough BS they finally revolt agains their government. Sure you never want to revolt against them but that’s what happens when you want change and they still go down the same stagnant path.

  11. baylinorcrush says:

You know what’s funny, well not really, until yesterday I think the Raiders had lost 7 or 8 straight season opener, as usual of late, come to Mile High and we’ll help you with those records, haha.

  12. Crazyhorserider says:

I think Coach Fox needs to be more imaginative in the red-zone and as others have said this is the ideal place to start using Tebow with his dual threat. The fact is we lost but if Tebow had been used we may have won. I think Coach Fox was too conservative and needs to make positive changes when necessary. Hopefully Elway will have some input into how we can improve.

Whilst Orton cost us the game I am sure he will beat himself up about that. I have to say that the conditions did contribute to some turnovers. I also feel that in some ways this was a good performance in that we only lost by 3 points having turned over the ball so many times we had no right to win. Without the turnovers we could have won.

Coop is right – the die is cast and we need to be patient. With the lock-out this year we were always going to be at a disadvantage so we need to make the best of what we have got.

Finally I want to thank all the fans at the game who were fantastic. They need to keep the faith, be as good as they were yesterday and bring back the Bronco’s home field advantage

  13. bronco4L says:

we lost the battle in the trenches n the screen passes killed us. which is something I pointed out before the game. So much can be said about last nights game, but even after the turnover n penalties we only lost by three. They should have beat us by atleast 20 but some how we were still in the game. I don’t know, I feel like I saw a team out there that wanted to win a fight in the ring not on the field. Their was fire in passion in the game but not for the right cause. Denver lost this game as a team. Mcdaniels made a mess that is going to take a bit longer to fix , but I also saw a team that had a lot of bad luck. That how is it that the raiders can get a 63 yard field goal to go in n praters ball curves like there was wind in the air when the flags were standing still. I guess the football gods are raider fans their is no other explanation. =( this lost is hard to swallow but we didn’t get killed last season. I still love my broncos nothing will ever change that. Broncos over cincy 23 -17.

  14. Broncfalls says:

    Bay you’re right! When you back date what has happened and the parade that came with it…good point! So with that said, maybe the question from the media to EFX needs to be;

“….It is obvious that the Tebow/Orton/Quinn quarterback debate is not going away anytime soon and that was evident last night when the fans where chanting for Tim. Do you feel that the attempt to trade Orton to Miami earlier in the season has played a larger role in the QB controversy sending a mixed message to the fan base? And how do you feel your locker room is going to handle this…?”

can I get this question asked today? LOL!

    GO GET EM’ BOYS!

    GO GET EM’ BOYS!

  15. killerkod says:

Man, after watching that pitiful performance from Orton, it makes you truly appreciate what the likes of Brady means to your team. We can only dream to have a guy of that calibur leading our offense. Brady is cool and precise on the field and intense on the sidelines………something we’ll never see out of Orton.

  16. 1nOnlyTRB says:

And honestly for the peopel who say stuff like “they should just trade tebow or get rid of tebow so we can get back to bronco football and cheering for the team instead of 1 man” — HA … won’t happen.

What people need to understand is that everyone is not pro tebow … but alot are ANTI- Orton … which means anyone but Orton with most believing the best choice would be Tebow.

Orton was sent here with 2 1st round picks … he was pretty much sent out as a consolation prize just to get rid of him. When Orton was playing in the first season here … people chanted for Simms … it doesn’t matter who is behind Orton … people will chant for them because orton is clearly not the answer … so the problem isnt tebow … the problem is Orton … And that might be because the guys on the bench cant make mistakes from the bench so they look better than Orton … but when a guy both sucks and puts you to sleep … yea … there will be a chant for the back ups … no matter who they are. Henne sucks … but that man looked like he was fighting … Im sure Miami is glad they didn’t trade for Orton … which was why we shoulda traded him for whatever while he was under contract and still LOOKED “good”. Now we are stuck with him …. who knows maybe he will turn into Aaron Rodgers before the season is over … maybe our Oline will turn into packers oline , and our play call will get some immagination … i won’t hold my breath tho. TRB

OK…I’m against Orton being the starter just as much as the next guy,but to call Elway gutless is crossing the line dude!!!!

I agreed with everything you said up until then,we all wanted Elway calling the shots, now we have to live with what decisions he makes. Our team is so bad it will take 2-3 years to get back to respectability, did you forget McDufus depleted this team of talent,we are starting to get talent back, but it will take at least 1 if not 2 more good drafts to be able to have the talent to compete,I might not agree with EFX’s decisions but please don’t start calling Elway gutless, because he is NOT!!!!!!!!!!!

To even think Tebow could steal Elways thunder is ludicris…..Tebow can’t even lace up Elways shoes.

If you have a problem with Elway,Fox,or,Xman God forbid,I’ll be the last person on here to bash you for it,I’ve called Elway out already too,but didn’t resort to calling the best QB ever gutless, not Kool!!!!!!!!!!

    GO TEBOW!!!!!!!
    GO BRONCOS!!!!

    Sorry for the double post.

  20. bronctario says:

@Brian; HA! The Rudy chant was great, but it wasn’t preceeded by the crowd booing the starting pass rusher. If for no other reason, I don’t want Tebow to start right now BECAUSE of the way the O-line played last night. If the pocket collapses like it did yesterday, Tebow will scramble to try to make a play (which is commendable), but that will leave him exposed to LB’s that wait for a chance at the QB. I don’t want guys like Hali, Johnson, Harrison, Lewis or countless other heavies getting a clean shot at my teams QB every play; that’s a good way to end up like Joe Theismann before you turn 30! Once the line improves, and only when the line can hold a pocket and open run gaps and run block will it be a fair assessment of Tebows talent. Right now, if he can’t play his game, it will only (unfairly) work against him because of the terrible play of his teammates.

  21. baylinorcrush says:

For you guys who keep saying we only lost by three points so we did good, had we played a good disciplined team that didn’t have penalties all game long on every other play, we would of gotten blown out. The only amazing thing is that the Raiders could win that game at all with how may times they tried to give it away. That is more the realistic part of it in my view anyway.

  22. Crazyhorserider says:

I saw Cutler’s post match interview and I saw somebody who was not happy about the way he played because of the mistakes he made, and his team won. I want that attitude in our QB and if you were to pick the QB on character Tebow would win by a country mile.

  23. Broncfalls says:

Can you get a mulligan in football?

  24. brian_schneider says:

Basically the Raiders sucked less than we did last night…

  25. Crazyhorserider says:

Good point Bay – I sometimes think I can’t see the wood for the trees.

  26. Broncfalls says:

    You know what I would like to see? A heading on the Denver web page that says;

The Moring After: Broncos Vow to Never Lose Again This Year!

    GO GET EM’ BOYS!

  27. Broncfalls says:

LOL….just realized that if you do the math, Brady threw for over a 1/4 of a mile last night LMFAO!

..uh o.k. knock it off dude! Not even funny :)

    GO GET EM’ BOYS!

  28. bronco-blaze says:

That and a crying tebow saying we will never lose to the faiders every again haha.

  29. Atwater4HOF says:

It was definitely a game that neither team seemed to want to win. We gift wrapped penalties, turnovers, and special teams blunders. The Raiders gift wrapped even more penalties.

Raiders at least excelled in 2 facets of the game. Running the ball and stopping the run. We didn’t excel at anything except when Decker had the ball. Both teams would have lost by 50 to the Patriots/Packers/Saints/Ravens

  30. brian_schneider says:

I bet if you told Orton that the football was a bottle of Jack Daniels he wouldn’t have dropped it LOL!

  31. bronctario says:

HA! Yea but he wouldn’t have thrown it either… though last night that may have been a good thing.

  32. baylinorcrush says:

Like I said in an earlier post, when you compare our game to the Packers game, it looks like two different leagues, absolutely no similarities. We were awful.

And when Orton backers are defending Orton saying he had many great plays, I must of missed most of them because he was totally inaccurate all night, most of the catches made were because the receiver made a great adjustment on the poor throws, everyone is talking about his INT and fumble and inability to do anything in the red zone, but unlike some other games, he was bad all around, even between the twenties, just saying.

  33. bronctario says:

Yea Bay, A terrible game all around. Certainly wasn’t worth stay up til 2:30 and needing 3 extra cups of coffee to function at work. I wish that was a preseason game, then I could exuse some of those horrible mistakes.

  34. brian_schneider says:

If this is Fox’s idea of “winning now” I’d sure hate to see what his idea of “losing” is.

  35. baylinorcrush says:

    LMAO @ Brian!

  36. Orange_Crusher says:

    Orton is Fox’s idea of “a gamer”……hahaha

Oh wait, maybe Fox was talking about the game of tiddly-winks and not football……lol

  37. bronctario says:

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=H0QOV2Ubtzo
Fox saw this and thought “What a gamer! He can help me with my chip shot when we’re busy NOT BEING IN THE PLAYOFFS”.

  38. socalbigbroncofan says:

So now that I calmed down, just a couple of points. We are a team rebuilding. Our d was left on that field too long. So it was not there fault. This was not a blow out game like last year, although it still sucks to lose at home to the raiders. Now with the orton. We have every right to be mad at orton as much as cowboys fans are mad at romo. Orton played terrible, and it was not because of our o line. They did play terrible though. But when u hear how qb is praised to extend the play by moving out of the pocket. You have the right to boo orton when he can’t. U don’t hear how bad the o line was for big ben, vick, rodgers or even our great elway when they moved out of the pocket and made a great play. Like bay says orton is liike a wooden statue. I will not call for tebow because im a tebow fan but hope that the gods above (management) will do it because its the right thing to do.
until then I will look forward to Sunday but still dissappointed.

  39. Orange_Crusher says:

    Orton is Fox’s idea of “a gamer”……hahaha…hahaha..haha

Oh wait, maybe Fox was talking about the game of tiddly-winks and not football……lol

Or maybe it was shuffleboard, go fish, checkers, dominos, scrabble, pixi-stix, Barrel-O-Monkeys?……hummmm??

Oh, I’ve got it! Fox was saying that Orton is a real “gamer” in a staring contest… aaaah that must be it…..lol

    Yatzee…..?

  40. killerkod says:

pin the tail on the donkey……or jacka$$ in this instance! LOL

  41. true2broncos says:

I thought Eric Decker looked like the REAL DEAL last night! He reminded me of Eddy McCaffery and seems very sure handed. Also gotta like his punt return!

On the other hand – I wish Eddie Royal would catch the dang ball!!! I want Royal gone or at least assigned to the return game and special teams!!!

By the way what happend to DOOM last night??? Is he hurt for the next game???

  42. killerkod says:

yeah, not sure what’s up with Royal. He seems to have lost his hands.

  43. 1nOnlyTRB says:

Decker was very good yesterday … i have him in my fantasy league … unfortunately I will have to drop him because of all he does on special teams in the punt game. leaves the man too gassed for recieving game even tho he still made some plays … mix that with the fact that we are almost always in a 2 receiver set until the game is lost and we are trying to play catch up and u can see why I can’t use Decker as a fantasy receiver. But as a real life receiver … he is very good and very versitile. A real QB would kill with out receiving squad. But they also need a real OC. TRB

  44. brian_schneider says:

Royal has been taken out of the gameplan all together. He isn’t returning kicks/punts, I think he was only targeted 2 or 3 times last night. He’s just not “in” the gameplan or something. Not sure but I’d sure like to see more “Royal Decker with Lloyd”

  45. strandoftds says:

Brian, liked your comment on Fox wanting to win now. LOL

  46. Broncfalls says:

    brian_schneider,

HIRED! We have an OC position available! please pack your things and report to the front office as soon as possible!

Royal, Decker and Lloyd….I like it

Not get to work brian and plan that Cincy game! LOL!

    GO GET EM’ BOYS!

  47. Broncfalls says:

    LOL!

You know it’s bad when the scouting combine measure’s the speed of a runner by the 40 and that’s 2 yds more than what we rushed for last night! WHAT? LOL!

    GO GET EM’ BOYS!

  48. strandoftds says:

John Elway doesn`t fear anybody. Johns his own man. Elway has more guts than you will have in your whole life time. Your speaking like a FOOL. I`m a Tebow fan also and the BRONCOS are rebuilding so GET OVER IT!! Tims time is coming and very soon.

  49. brian_schneider says:

The one thing we can control is the dumb penalties. Not holding and allowing only a 2 yard gain or loss is a lot better than giving up 10 yards on a holding call. We’ve first and foremost need to clean up the penalties that is an absolute must if we want a chance at winning against Cincy.

  50. strandoftds says:

You hit the nail on the head and thats a start.
