Tough Sunday for Broncomaniacs

October 31st, 2011 - 9:06am by mark_cooper

This post will probably get the same hundreds of responses that the Raider game last year warranted. Tough day…had a few of these over a seven year career.

The toughest part is while it’s happening, you’re trying to get something started. You’re in the huddle talking amoungst each other about getting the next first down. On the sideline the coaches aren’t pleased and every little mistake is magnified. You’re looking over the fronts the opponent are playing and talking about the way they are playing them. You’re fixing mistakes and getting a mini plan together for the next series and you head back out on the field and 3 and out before you know it and it’s like groundhog day all over again. No matter how pissed you get it keeps happening with a breakdown somewhere in the play. One guy/player each time.

Everyone’s trying to rally. It’s not going your way. Your fighting to do the best you can and it seems you’d have been better not getting out of bed that day. Sometimes it’s just a flat day at the park. Ask the New Orleans Saints this past weekend as they were beat by the Rams. And their fans were hoping for Luck in the first round??? Who knows.

Next days FILM….ohhh the dreaded film, back and forth, back and forth, slow motion, every mistake AMPLIFIED in slow motion, you know it coming and you almost contort your body into the right position……trying to fix the mistake you know you made, as if you can fix it before it plays up on the huge monitor. Talk about Halloween….it is!! FILM never lies.

It’s not a one man team. Patience. Yep, said it before and that’s the (Theme), really for the next 3-4 years. You have to let this staff have their fair shot at bringing in the talent and making the trades they see fit to run a organization they built not McDaniels and the prior staff. I have patience, do you??

A young, new coach took us 8 and 8 the first year and we fire him in his second. Yet…we should give an old, has been mediocre coach, with a losing record, almost twice the money and twice the time to get the job done? Makes NO sense at all. He’s already cost us the best receiver we had, who doesn’t seem to mind performing for McD so much.

  2. baylinorcrush says:

    Well, I’m still here! LOL.

  3. seweatherman1 says:

All I know in talking about Tebow, is I keep asking myself one question. Did Elway go through this kind of ridicule and people wanting to get rid of him his first year after he stunk it up in one of his many losses? How did people back then react to him losing? His first year was a bust if memory serves me correct.

  4. Carsonic says:

Thanks, Coop, for a great inside-the-huddle perspective. It’s really refreshing after games like these to have your as-positive-as-possible take on things. Personally, my adrenal glands no longer respond to the team, so I watch the games with either pleasant surprise or detached bemusement, and will continue to exercise patience for as long as it takes for our beloved boys in orange and blue to claw their way back.

  5. seweatherman1 says:

I like your last paragraph the best Coop. So right, it is NOT a one man team.

  6. Carsonic says:

weatherman, I have had the same questions in my head. It would be great to have a 16 game comparison of Elway and Tebow as starters (assuming Tebow actually ever gets 16 games as a starter with the Broncos – lol).

  7. shaztah says:

Yes I am patient. I am not giving up on the team or Tim Tebow. I just hope the coaching staff etc. don’t give up on him either. I did not expect a miracle from last week to this week and of course there wasn’t one. I am not a football expert but we were over matched by a long shot. The team needs to grow and learn together, we have a lot of young players and not all players are going to come in and be spectacular in a short amount of time. I am patient enough to wait for the team to improve and learn to trust each other. I just hope we don’t take a step backwards and start Orton again because that will send a message to the young player that you had better do miracles or your on the bench.

  8. stevecan2 says:

I wish I had patience. every single mcd hire that is responsable forgame planning. out. trade tebow before they completely trash any confidence he might have.

tebow should not be a denver bronco, neither is good for each other. he is not being coached the way he needs. a bye week is not enough time to change every aspect of a players game. rediculous coaching.

  9. Atwater4HOF says:

    seweatherman-

Times have changed, fair or not. When you look around at other teams who have instant success with rookie QBs, it’s hard not to be frustrated with our situation. Guys like Dalton, Matt Ryan, Aaron Rodgers, Joe Flacco, Big Ben, even Ponder and Newton showed promise from the get-go. Years ago teams wouldn’t judge a rookie QB until his third year. Now, if a rookie looks rough in 5-6 starts teams want to throw the towel in on a guy. Just my take on it

  10. seweatherman1 says:

That is one thing we will never see here is a 16 game comparison between Tebow and anybody. He will be doing well if he gets the remainder of this season to prove his worth to the front office. They want results now, not later.

  11. savinghyrule says:

    Totally agree, shaztah.

  12. killerkod says:

Yes – Elway might not have done well his first season………….

But what did Elway have that Tebow will never? AN ARM!!!! The most valuable asset to a QB.

  13. Atwater4HOF says:

My fear, and it appears to be coming true, is that teams are continuing to learn how to gameplan against Tebow. The more tape that comes out on him, the worse he seems to be doing. Detroit blitzed on 55% of their defensive plays compared to 12% (I think is the right number) that they averaged the rest of the season. That number would have been much higher if they didn’t revert to a shell prevent defense for most of the 4th quarter.

The challenge now is for Tebow to learn how to counteract being blitzed all day. Until he can do that, its going to be brutal to watch.

  14. RabidOrange says:

Interesting. I just read an article on FoxSports by someone who actually gets paid to write about sports basically accusing Fox and Co of “sabotaging” Tebow and trying to make him look bad in order to get out from under the burden of Tebowmania. Wow. I don’t think I buy that, but I have heard it here, too. I’m patient, and try not to repeat myself too much, but I’ll wait out this season with Tebow at the helm. If not him, then Weber. Anyway, I’m looking forward to a real step forward at the QB position next season. Semper Broncos!!

  15. BroncosLAX says:

As a Broncos fan I was disgusted yesterday. I have been a fan for 19 years have seen good and bad days of this club and I am truely sorry to offend anyone but I am passionate about the team and am more open minded than most fans but am also unbiased. Fact of the matter is that it will take at least 2 years to make Tebow a serviceable back up in this league. I DO NOT want that to be the case but it is! Wish he could succeed here but he wont. Writing is on the wall and all Tebow is doing as adding to the narative instead of writing his own that proves the naysayers wrong. I am still going to hope for Tebow to succeed, but I do not believe he will. Love me or hate me I’m gonna tell you what I think and I learned from bay in that I’ll stick to my guns and not back down because you think I’m wrong.

  16. seweatherman1 says:

Detroit did exactly what they said they were going to do. They were going to make him throw the long ball. They cut out the run and the short passes and left him only the long ball, that is if he could throw it in less than 2 seconds, which is how long it took for their defense to come through the line to get to him.

killerkod, you are correct, he had an arm. His longest his 1st season was 49 yds. He was 123 of 259 attempts and 7 td’s with 14 interceptions. Comp. % 47.5 and a 54.9 rating.

  17. RabidOrange says:

Here’s how I see the rest of the season going. No rationality behind this, really, but here it is. Tim will get five starts just like Orton did. If and when he goes 1-4, in comes Quinn. He’ll get the next five. There’s your QB competition. If and when Quinn goes 0-5, in comes Weber for the last game. He’ll light up the Chiefs and make Fox and Co look the fool. Thus, no real QB dilemma solved except that we’ll know that Luck, Jones, or whoever we draft at QB will have either good competition or a quality backup in Weber next season.

  18. baylinorcrush says:

I have patience but in this current organization this is not the best of scenario for me to use it as I stated on a previous blog from which I will repost an excert:

Now let’s put things in perspective:

Starting with when Shanahan lost it as far as our D was concerned was the start of our downfall into the abyss of hell.

And when every knowledgeable Bronco fan knew we needed to hire a D minded HC, Bowlen decided to hire a 34 year old OC as our new HC in McD.

Who then got rid of most of our talent in the next couple of years, like Cutler, Marshall, Hillis and Scheffler among others.

So in order to stop the destructive force that McD was and reconnect with the fans Bowlen hired Elway into an unknown position for him.

Who with Bowlen got enamored by one of the few candidates who accepted an interview with the team for HC (slim picking it was), Fox represented stability, conservatism, wouldn’t do anything near as crazy as McD did, even so he came with a 2-14 record he was the best they could get.

That whole sequence in our franchise was and is a total recipe for disaster.

And the disaster keeps going on and on and on.

So my reason for patience maybe not the best course of action here:

Everything in life runs its course, and that includes ownership, and clearly ownership has been amissed for at least three years, a extremely troubling trend, every move made was simply a knee jek reaction to what has happened, time after time after time, and that simply doesn’t give you a shot at a proper reorganization, we are in deep doo-doo for three or four years like Coop says, not the crap part the time frame part, and I’m not sure that’s even realistic since ownership keeps making knee jerk moves to basically please the fans to feed the bottom line rather than have a comprehensible plan to move us forward with a strong organization in place with the only goal being winning.

Not only is the ownership short on money, they can’t even use up multi millions of the salary cap, but they also placed themselves in an impossible situation having named Elway V.P. of Football Operations because no good GM in their right mind will ever take the job only to be under Elways’ authority so we’re stuck with Xanders.

Bottom line if the top of the organization is poorly run so how can anyone expect to see the coaches and players do their jobs.

It pains me to say all that but I believe current ownership in Denver may just have run its course, if you’d like to have a team returning to the big winning ways of the past again that is. I’m afraid business as usual will keep us in mediocrity for a lot longer than 3/4 years, big time decisons are on the docket for ownership.

  19. seweatherman1 says:

killerkod, I am not defending Tebow, nor cutting Elway by any means. My point here is that Tebow was and is not the only one out there that stunk this game up. This was truly a team effort, coaches included. There was one time that the announcers even called out McCoy about his play calling.

  20. seweatherman1 says:

Bay, I know this has been asked before but do you really see Elway’s role as his current position or do you think, as I kind of think that this position was created for him to get his foot in the door as a learning curve toward full ownership and take over of this franchise, keeping it in Denver?

  21. BroncosLAX says:

My biggest grief is that many fans said it was mostly Ortons fault when we lost before even though we were competitive in every game except against GB. Now there is everyone pointing at Tebow but fact is screen passes were not gonna work when Detroit had everyone on the line all day. Has anyone thought that maybe McCoy only calls plays that Tebow is supposed to be able to run? How can someone say to dumb down and suit the offense to Tebow and then blame the OC for aycalling. With Orton the problem was exeution with and open playbook. With Tebow the problem is execution with a limited playbook. Tebow deserves the majority of yesterdays loss as QB1 Just like orton got

  22. baylinorcrush says:

Elway doesn’t have enough money to buy a over a billion dollar team outright, just a minority stake is all and I do hope that’s what eventually happens that way he can get out of the way of a real GM coming into town so we can have a fair shot at straightening all this mess up.

  23. seweatherman1 says:

I was wondering. I was also thinking the same as you have stated here bay, but I was also hoping that with his business background that he may know some other “money” pockets that would want to invest in this takeover.

  24. seweatherman1 says:

I do agree that if this isn’t fixed from the top down, 3 or 4 years of this might not even be a reasonable time to look at whatever they are trying to accomplish.

  25. baylinorcrush says:

In all honesty, all they are trying to accomplish now is to feed the bottom line, every move basically points to that whether anyone likes it or not.

  26. seweatherman1 says:

    true. all about the money!

  27. seweatherman1 says:

Later guys. I am out of here for a bit.

  28. orangemnm says:

LAX, I agree with you! At least on the last blog. Tebow does deserve the majority of the blame for Yesterdays loss. However, the difference is still that Tebow is a 5 game starter, and Orton was a 7 year veteran.

  29. brian_schneider says:

I was unfortunate and didn’t get to watch the game yesterday..or maybe I was fortunate? Anyway I haven’t even had the chance to watch the highlights or anything, but judging by the score there probably aren’t too many. Just like Orton, Tebow will get most of the blame deserved or not. Without looking at any video or stats I really can’t say one way or the other. I will say those who thought Tebow would just come in and be awesome must’ve been suffering from the side effects of the kool-aid. LOL! Eveyrone hoped that Tebow would’ve been a God send and just been awesome, but he isn’t. It’s going to take some time for him, patient or not the schedule, league, and organization will move on with or without Tebow. Maybe eventually that will come down to Tebow being successful at a different position, who knows. All I do know is that some call it patience, some call it ignorance, and some call it waiting for a miracle. Just like with Orton, it isn’t all the QBs fault. Look at the team that just pounded us..they’ve been at the bottom for a while, they drafted..successfully, and now they are a legit team. That’s what we need to do, whether that is a new QB, HB, WR, DT..whatever we need to become an established franchise once again and we need to do it in the draft and not relay on picking up other team’s garbage..so to speak. Patience, I’ve got it, heck I’d go another season with Tebow but that’s just me, instant gratification is something on my low priorities, while it would be nice it isn’t going to happen. Call me old fanshioned, call me in the stone age. The team is either going to invest with Tebow and form a team around him, or they aren’t. In this business it is about instant gratification and performance which hurts all players. “If you don’t win” you’re a bust blah blah blah. I’ve already come to terms with thinking maybe Tebow isn’t our guy and if that happens I’m fine with that. Like I’ve always said I’m willing to let him have his chance if the team doesn’t feel the same way than that’s fine also…maybe they’ve already made their decision…

  30. BroncosLAX says:

True but that should not mean that everyone should excuse Tebows play completely. FLGator on the last blog just said that on the fumble an Orange jersey should have jumped on the ball… Which cant be done when it is stripped by the defender and in front of him as he is in stride. Had Orton fumbled the same fan would say to get him out but with Tebow the D scored because an Orange jersey didnt fall on it. The denial is laughable

  31. baylinorcrush says:

These are the simple truths of the matter about the Tebow phenomena:

-Elway has stated numerous times that he wants Tebow to perform well from the pocket.

-Tebow has so far proven that he cannot perform from the pocket.

-So it’s irrelevant what kind of playcalling McCoy and Fox use.

-If Tebow can’t perform from the pocket he is as good as gone.

And that’s it, end of the story, sorry to the Tebow disciples who don’t like it but arguing about it here will get you nowhere, you guys need to take it to Elway. Do it on twitter tomorrow, LMAO!

  32. killerkod says:

seweatherman………I hear ya man……..and I’m by no means placing all the blame on TT…………the whole team stunk up the joint.

But on the same token………….Tebow did nothing……..and I mean nothing……..to even show that he has improved. His throws were painful to watch. I think that throwing accuracy is more of a gift and talent, rather than something you can teach, or learn. I don’t think he has it. It’s just my opinion.

On a funny note………..was watching SportsCenter here in Canada and Geory Simon of the BC Lions, a CFL team tweeted that they’ll be seeing Tebow in the league soon. LMAO

  33. BroncosLAX says:

Haha wait Bay we could insert a college offense in the pros to tailor to Tebow skill set… Isnt it asinine to suggest that Tebow should have to make passes from the pocket? That he should have to hit recievers in stride not 3 yards ahead or behind? I hope I’m growing on you a little Bay because youve been saying the most reasonable stuff the last 2 days out of any fan on here

  34. killerkod says:

Maybe we shoulda used the Statue of Liberty play in the playbook?

  35. shaztah says:

So what you guys are saying is that this offense should play at a much higher level after a bye week (with at least 4 of those days off) and 2 more weeks of practice (the week of Dolphins game and the week of Detroit game)? Would 3 weeks be enough to get chemistry and timing? This offense hasn’t been together that long jeez cut them some slack and give them some time to gel and learn.

  36. baylinorcrush says:

I hear you LAX, but often it’s not what you say but how you say it that gets under others’ skins, done that many times myself, keep that in mind and you’ll be fine.

  37. killerkod says:

    shaztah……..

timing means nothing when you can’t properly deliver the ball…….something TT has shown he can’t do. Most of his completions have been because of great catches on poorly thrown balls.

  38. HardHitting27 says:

I see we are touching on all the topics today.
I still feel the issue is not in the QB, Tebow, Orton, or Quinn. I feel the issue is with a rigid, inflexible HC and OC.
And I include our DC now too.

Yesterday our Offense didn’t adjust to allow for success. It didn’t play to high percentage confidence building passes to get Tebow rolling. It didn’t adjust to the Lions D to switch up the run and pass. Most of the time we ran on first down, play action pass/run on 2nd and straight pass on 3rd. Because we didn’t mix it up, we failed and played to their hand. This was the MO yesterday and in games past even with Orton at QB. The only difference is that Orton knows a few more plays, but the problem is that both Orton and Tebow hold the ball too long. Orton just would’ve been sacked faster yesterday.

The D didn’t adjust either and played horrible. The Lions must’ve ran the same delayed hitch running play throughout the day with success. We never filled the gap or adjusted to stop it. And the passing D and pass rush was awful.

John Lynch was spot on with his assessment of the team during the game.

And everyone is not mentioning the fact that Romo from the Cowboys, a Vet, had similar numbers to Tebow in an awful losing effort yesterday.

This was a TEAM loss yesterday. And the blame is on the whole team, but you start pointing the finger at the coaching staff first and then work your way to the players.

  39. shaztah says:

And Bay, I hope that Elway will give Tebow more than 2 starts this year to prove himself but the more I think about it the more sense you make. Here is a scenario in which I think Bay said too or at least close to it. Miami will get first pick and Denver will trade Tebow, Moreno and some extra draft picks to Miami for the #1 pick. Detroit will have Meyer either as their HC or OC (I think not really but ya never know) and Tebow will light it up meanwhile Denver will have more growing pains with Luck and will suck for at least 2 more years.

  40. BroncosLAX says:

Well you and I both know I need work on that when in the heat of the moment my passion for Bronco football kind of takes over. I prefer to say what I feel but I need to try taking a step back.

  41. killerkod says:

lol @ hardhitting……….Bringing up Romo is too funny.

Romo is a verteran choke artist who usually plays horrible………Dallas will never be a winner with him behind center.

I do not consider him an elite QB whatsoever.

  42. BeastFromEast92 says:

Coopster…….the Rams fans were hoping for Luck in the 1st round????

Why in Hell would they want Luck, when they drafted Bradford last year???

Either you don’t make any sense,or I read you wrong bro, because Bradford has the makings of a good NFL QB!!!!

  43. killerkod says:

but again, that’s just my opinion…………

  44. BroncosLAX says:

Shaztah if you watched the game it is plain Tebow will not be lighting it up anytime soon. Hiring Meyer and installing a Colege Offense will not solve his apparent problems the speed of the NFL isnt that of college. What I see is Luck to denver for 2 1st round picks, this years 2nd and 4th, and Tebow. Miami is an entertainment team and Ross would love to have Tebow to fill seats. Denver with Luck would automatically become at the least 1 6 win team with Tebow they are a 3 or 4 win team… thats my piece there

  45. BroncosLAX says:

BFE he was serious rumblings have been lately that if SL gets 1st pick they would draft Luck and trade Bradford to the Browns. If they do draft Luck We should pounce on a trade for Bradford… a 2nd and a 4th would do the trick a Draft picks stock dips immedietly after being drafted and Bradford hasnt done much yet

  46. BeastFromEast92 says:

I will probably get bashed for what I’m about to say,but I don’t care,I’ll say it anyway!!!
The best thing Mr.B ever done was hiring Shanny!!!!!
The worst thing Mr.B ever done was firing Shanny!!!!

I would love to still have Shanny,Cutler,Marshall,Hillis,Shef, and Harris.along with our #3 ranked Offense. At least with that team we had a chance to outscore our opponents, with this team we barely score!!!!

I know,no use crying over spilt milk, but this sucks!!!!!!
Our Defense sucks, and now our Offense sucks!!!

  47. BeastFromEast92 says:

We won’t have to worry about Bradford we will get a shot at Luck,Barkley,Landry, and Moore!!!!!!!!!!

  48. BeastFromEast92 says:

    Romo sucks!!!!!!

  49. BroncosLAX says:

BFE I agree and disagree… Something had to change and they started from the top but he could have hired a GM who was active in team decisions leaving Shanny with Ofensive personell decisions. they needed someone who knew dfense to make important decisions. But it probably would not have been taken well by Shanny

  50. BroncosLAX says:

I’m just throwing out the scenario but I would love to have Landry even though my wish list is topped with Luck.
