Tough schedule, your thoughts??

April 19th, 2009 - 2:40pm by mark_cooper

I was reading the paper between shoveling this Friday and Saturday. Had a crazy week at the office with closings at the end of the day in a snow storm Friday. If you’re from here you know EXACTLY what I mean, wow, spring storms…crazy! Hope everyone was safe!!

The schedule came out and Krieger, I think, says 5-11. Before we get to far into the draft talks and picks…you guys are really good at this and I wanted to get your opinion on the schedule. We’ll have plenty of time to talk draft but I was really curious of your opinion and thoughts are on the schdeule???

    Hey Coop,

That I know of, all teams are 0-0 right now. So I don’t know how hard the schedule really is. Injuries, loss FA, acquisitions of players that dont pan out all equate too this year notlast years record. for example, Baltimore Ravens lost 2 great players 2 the Jets and let go of Chris mccallister, how will they fare. We will see.

    Stay True Denverland.

  2. jacob33 says:

It’s a little hard i think we can do it maybe 8-8 thats if we get a good QB in the draft so it will be a ok year!!!

  3. 831_Broncos_Fan says:

Im just hoping we dont get plauged by injuries again like last year

  4. dlmyers says:

    Seven items point to 7-9 wins;
    1.Quality QBing with less turnovers
    2. Healthy RB’s
    3. Another year together for the OL
    4. Front 7 will stop (more) runs
    5. DB’s will get (more) int’s
    6. Beter coach with better players make for better competition
    7 (More) Pro Bowlers

  5. 07elway says:

Hey Coopster! I see you got to enjoy a typical Denver “Spring” storm… haha, surprised are ya?!?! Its spring time and people still think Denver or any part of Colorado won’t get snow… comical!! My mom told me yesterday that some part of North Eastern Colorado got 52 inches of snow… so jealous over here!!! Can’t wait to move back. :D

As for the schedule… WOW!!! This will most definitely be a test for us to see how much stronger we’ve become. Will be a bigger test for our defense and now rudely abrupted offense. Can count on one thing though… we won’t have one dull moment around here during the season that’s for sure. Excited yet hesitant about the season at the same time.

    With faith…
    GO BRONCOS in ’09!!!!

  6. George Bush says:

The way I look at it is that to get a winning record you need to win all your home games – and Mile High Invesco Field should be a fortress for the Broncos.

I honestly believe that Coach McDaniels has what it takes to be a winner from the start and I fully expect Denver to win all their home games plus the away games against Cincinatti, Oakland, Washington, Kansas City and Philidelphia. This may seem to be a tough ask but McDaniels has the tenacity and vision to beat any team and since Denver is a young team with great energy they will give him the chance to lay down a marker for years to come.

Get ready for a new Bronco’s dynasty.

  7. imready says:

Tough schedule, new coach and a new team. Who the heck knows what’s gonna happen? The general consensous is it takes 3 years to develope a D-lineman. This is the 3rd year for many on or young guys, will they step up and be somebody? Though Raji can maybe play 60 percent of the snaps, I think he may be the only D-lineman that could play at a high level his first year. I say if we move up to get him our chances are better, especially if we primarily play the 3-4. C. Powell may excel too on the D-line, I was very disappointed when he got hurt last year. W. Woodyard on the field this year will help a great deal , he’s the man and sets an example for all defensive players. I think the defense will be better than last year with M. Nolan at the helm. I think Simms or Orton will play well in McDaniels offense and I was relieved to here he is as high on P. Hillis as are most of us, We still have a great O-line and receiving corp too. I think we suprise some people and finish 10-6 regardless of the schedule and make the playoffs. This is the Denver Broncos we are talking about after all, not the Detroit Lions. Go Broncos!

  8. babychamp-broncos^ says:

I’m hating all the comments I see from so called bronco fans from this site as well as different sites talking about just because we lost Cutler our season is dead with no more than 5 wins…Come on now what kind of fans are you…i honestly believe even with the schedule we have 10 11 wins…Just think last season no one thought we could beat the jets browns or falcons and we proved them all wrong…what else i dont understand is they say the bears will go 12-4 or whatever makin it to the playoffs….thats sidin with the other team first of all and why not become a bears fan or stay a cutler fan and stop down talking the broncos like all hope is lost..i believe in orton or simms to be the man in the back because of our O-line they give time in the pocket and with time you make great decisions….

  9. painterdave says:

    Jeez!

We still have not even had the draft. We don’t know who is the starting QB, RB, etc. Somebody mentioned injuries… that is way valid. The whole question is pure speculation… more so since we have a totally revamped team, coach, philosophy, etc.

Way too many variables to even make a good guess.

    8-8?

    6-10?

    10 – 6?

It’s little more than a look into a crystal ball.

  10. BradJamesBroncoFan says:

I say the best case scenario is 11-5, and the worst case is 9-7. The Broncos will not have a decimated backfield again this season nor will the quarterbacking be as horrendous as many believe. As always, GO BRONCOS!!! Yes, Coop, the snow storm was bad in Denver. The day before you guys got it, we got some bad snow in Utah so hopefully it’s tormenting the Chiefs fans in Kansas City by now.

  11. cutler6101 says:

having cutler still would be nice but with everyone dissing us and saying we are doomed without him…..IF I REMEMBER CORRECTLY THIS TEAM IS IN ITS 50TH ANN…..AND CUTLER IS LIKE 25 YEARS OLD…..we’ve won without him before and will continue winning without him. Our record will be whatever we want it to be…if we fight every yard we will come out on top! we have more sting than last year on defense and WE WILL DRAFT A QB THIS YEAR. we can get it done with orton or simms but we don’t want to…well mcd doesn’t…he wants his guy (he wants to bring up someone from scratch)….and I hope he does b/c thats what hes supposed to be able to do in the first place! it will be an interesting next couple of years and this season will be the foundation to something good I hope! and also ever heard of ANY GIVEN SUNDAY…..thats right we still got our swagger

  12. cutler6101 says:

    I say 10-6 or 11-5

  13. PatientBronco says:

The thing to remember is that we are in a rather weak division. Hell the Dolts won the division only with a epic failure of our team at the end of the season. The cheifs and chargers will likely be better, but I dont think they have made the improvements overall that we have. So long as this team gels and plays smart football there is no reason we cant win the division. In fact, if you take the 3-4 games that Cutler threw late game interceptions that either took away a chance at a win or comeback we would have had a playoff spot and likely hosted the first round.

My real concern here is playing KC twice near the end of the season. Playing in KC in dec/jan sucks and playing them 4 weeks apart doesnt help. 4 division games in the second half of the season at least gives us some room to gel before facing div opponents. Schedule seems harder in the second half of the season, so we’ll see how the team improves as the competition gets stronger. Oops rambling again. have fun.

  14. cutler6101 says:

well put patientbronco….if cutler had not thrown the costly interceptions we would have locked up the division and a playoff spot! He ended up hurting us more than helping us last year…don’t get me wrong though he was a good qb but needed better coaching or more practice at making better decisions. Mcd coached their qb and should know some of the things he likes to do and that helps a little. kc’s defense has changed a lot but we have some great football minds in our coaching staff! I look to do a little better than the 11-5 I posted earlier..as always!

  15. 1golfdoc says:

i still can’t figure out the whole drama between mcd & cutler. but i do know, i watch the broncos for the players. so mcd, show us who you can get playing for us at pro bowl levels.

  16. broncochick1 says:

1golfdoc who cares who is in the pro bowl as long as we are winning which we haven’t done in the last few years under Jay “Daddy will you CUT me meatLER”. If McDaniels goes 8-8 this year we should all sing his praise because this schedule is a lot harder than last year. If he makes the playoffs we should all be really excited about our future. Go Broncos!!!

  17. broncbeat says:

Heck, I can never guess these things. To many X facters and teams are not always what people think they are. I’m going out on a lim and say 10-6. Tough schedule but none of us know for sure, so I feel save with that.

  18. oldsouthstander says:

Okay, coop, here’s my “expert” preditcions:

Cincy At best, Cincy has one disgtuntled receiver. Sure win.
Cleveland Home opener of a new era. Sure win.
Raiders If Garcia’s not starting, sure win. If he is, tossup.
Dallas Disfunctional Cowboys have no team leader and a head
coach who can’t lead either. Tight game to Broncos.
Patriots Teascher vs pupil. Tossup. All depends on how Broncos
ground game is going. NE in a squeaker.
Chargers Chargers are the better team. Chargers win.
Ravens Ravens defense is getting very old. Prime for an upset.
Steelers Steelers defense is better than ours, but Broncos seem to
have the Steelers number. Broncos in a tight game.
Red Skins Home field advantage Redskins. Skins win.
Chargers Tossup. Broncos must play perfect game to win.
Giants Easy win if Giants don’t pick up a replacement for Burris.
If they found a replacement, tight win for Broncos.
Chiefs Broncos suck at KC. Chiefs win.
Colts Peyton should be in top form this late in the year. Colts.
Raiders Broncos win. Close game if Garcia is starting.
Eagles Eagles have consistantly showed how tough they can be at
the end of the season. Eagles win.
Chiefs Broncos close out the season in a high note.

Final tally, Broncos 10-6 with possible wild card slot.

  19. 07elway says:

Oh yeah cutler6101… like it was ALL Cutler’s fault because we had so many INTs. Ya know its a TEAM sport… half of the blame in those plays belongs to Cutler and the other half belongs to the person who didn’t catch the ball but should have. Ok yes, Cutler did throw some passes that weren’t catchable by any means to our guys but ALL of the INTs are not all on him.

You can’t say its a TEAM sport and then put all the blame on one player… doesn’t work my friend. We lost and won as a TEAM.

    With faith…
    GO BRONCOS in ’09!!!!

  20. rebelbronco says:

babychamp, I couldn’t agree with you more. I’m sick of hearing that we are doomed without cutler and that this schedule is impossible without him. Last year I looked at the schedule and said 11 or 12 wins easy, but then our defense got on the field. Cutlers int’s didn’t help either.

We all have to stay positive and realize this will be a different team than any of us have seen over the past 14 years. Change is inevitable, and in this case good. For us to have a good season it has to start at home. We need to be an intemidating team at mile high again. I think we win all the home games except for New England and New York, then split the road games. That should give us 10-6, and with a weak divison perhaps a divison title with a big middle fingure to the bolts.

    Lets go Broncos!!!

  21. CaptainPoncho says:

When are we going to be wearing the Brown/Yellow unis? My guess was @ San Diego and maybe home vs. the Patsies, but no word from the front office so far.

  22. broncs55 says:

I think the most logical answer so far is the first. Every team is batting 1000 right now. Everyone starts with a clean slate.

Putting injuries, acquisitions and everything else aside, it is very feasible with the talent we have to go 11-5 though. However, I believe a few of those games are going to be very close calls and we could very well end up going 8-8 again.

    Just my two cents!

  23. broncogangsta86 says:

It does not seem like any team is “dominant” any more, It’s more of an “any given sunday” style now, so its hard to predict a record for them.

all I know is Cutler is going to LOVE his time here during preseason game #2!

    - yea u are

  24. Old Hockey Guy says:

My expectation is that the Broncos should be at least 9-7. Judge this new coach by his performance on the field.

  25. SBXXXII..Iwzthr! says:

Hey, Coop. I’m not going to predict what’s going to happen because, really, no one can predict what will happen.

We won games everyone thought we should have lost and lost games we should have one. And that goes around the league.

No one thought Atlanta or Miami were going to do as well as they did and nobody thought that Jacksonville would go down in flames like they did.

I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again….If we take care of the ball, score touchdowns on offense, be sound on defense and solid on special teams, how can we not win no matter who we play?

    Go Broncos!!

  26. ManelyOrange says:

    Coop,

McDaniels says he wants to win now rather than build for a year or two and then win. I must say that he had better make this team go AT LEAST 8-8 if not 9-7. It is a tough schedule, but if he wants to win now, he should have been totally removed from his supposed concern over Cutler’s whiney attitude and launch into the playoffs.

So, if his intent is to win now, he had better have one hell of a plan to go about doing it.

After looking at the schedule, I say we go 8-8. Hopefully McDaniels learns a few lessons while out from underneath Belichik’s wings and that he realizes that his youthful naivete is a reality. Just because Tomlin did, doesn’t mean he can.

It is very difficult to foresee a record with a head coach who has to go out and prove that he’s not stupid.

When all is said and done, all I can really say is…..

    GO BRONCOS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  27. finkman says:

    Coop:
There are a lot of ( if’s) in this season. I suspect if the Broncos stay healthy and play to there potential they could have a winning season. If not, who knows what can or will happen! They could be 8 & 8 or 5 and 11. We shall seen in early January!! GO BRONCOS!!!!!

  28. bronco-blaze says:

Well…I totaly agree with alot of your posts….Sadly i kind of agree and disagree with the losing at KC…Shanny had the curse, not the organization. Mcdenver WILL bring dicipline. Shanny was great and all but i think we can all agree he alot of people slide. With McD being young i think he can bring that connection and closer friendship. Cassle and Garcia is what scares the crap out of me lol….We have been giving the raiders and chiefs hell, but when they make a sudden QB move they seem to have our number..They have the weapons but not the dicipline…Kinda like us..I HATE TO SAY THAT Becuase it seems like i hate the chargers worse than any team right now..I just hope we shut them up….Rivers talking all over us is getting ridiculous..Shanny and Cutler obviously couldnt get the job done..So i hope that Mcdenver will make our organization proud..Not a push over game on the schedule…

-I Say…….11-5 at best…I wouldnt be to upset if we go 8-8 just because wow….THat would be a great improvement with a brand new team almost…BUt some how i expect better from our team, and from Coach..I think all bronco fans should feel the same…. ALL of you may have your different view on things, but we need to support our team in all ways possible..DOwning them makes us wose than posers…It makes us CHarger fans ;-) I have high hopes and i think all of you should…WIth protection on our QB i think well do fine on Offense..IF orton is the QB he seems like a strong leader, and with the right weapons and training he will be damn good enough until we get a franchise player..

BTW CUtler will fail….Cutler threw for alot yes..But we had a damn good O. BEARS O LINE BLOWS! they better get better O line men or cutler will be running for 4500 yards now throwing for it :D

    Go BrOnCoS!

  29. BroncoDude76 says:

I think that this season will be an interesting one for Broncos fans and players alike. This is the most optimistic I have been about Denver since we went to Super Bowls XXXII and XXXIII. I hope we do well. I predict we’ll go 13 – 3, and win the AFC West and beat the living CRAP out of San Diego, Chokeland, and KC!

13wins??? People just post comments to post them? lmao Im (in my mind) the biggest Broncos fan ever but 13 wins?? If we do that Mc Daniels is coach of the year! Shannahan should have been fired! Now after typing that there is no way we get 13. 10 maybe

  31. cutler6101 says:

07elway….I never said that it was all cutlers fault….but when he throws an interception driving for the win…then yes it was his fault last year b/c he had the best o line in the nfl last year and could have checked down….go look at the tapes before you blast me b/c when he threw several int he just about always had someone open….but with him and HIS STRONG ARM he would try to look good and put it where it shouldn’t go! cutler was here for himself not the team and he really showed us that! and on top of that we did throw a lot but we had a run game because we averaged 114 or 116 yards a game last season and our run game was ranked like 14 or 16th in the league……we had a lot drop from that position but if you ask me I believe that it had a lot to do with the play calling at those given times…plus cutler doesn’t like to check down he likes to go deep and felt pushed to make the play….so yes we lost as a team but being real about it it was more his fault than anyone else’s on offense…yeah bmarsh dropped the ball but cutler turned it over more than anyone…when it comes down the line dude someone always takes the blame and that is why mikey got the boot my friend…..its been nice schooling you again….later…read my post again at the top I never said he was a bad qb……he is a really good qb and I myself would like to still have him here just needed to work on ball control

  32. cutler6101 says:

oh and yes this is a TEAM sport for us but behind closed doors at the office they do put the blame on ppl and ppl end up making their decisions based on what you do as a person and someone will ALWAYS take the blame it is life. i live and bleed orange and blue

  33. babychamp-broncos^ says:

Thank you rebelbronco for yo recognition but I am lookin forward to this draft so i can see where we really stand as a team…..

  34. 987654321 says:

Well put ManelyOrange, I agree with you 100%.

  35. Greatness007 says:

Did I miss something? Did D.J. Williams get cut.? He’s the best LB we have. He can play outside and inside. So if we draft Jackson then put Boss at OLB on the same side. Then ya’ll are putting Doom on the other side and then draft Maualuga for inside with Andre’. Its olny natural D.J. plays the otherside. No where in any of this post have I seen D.J. name in any of them. Well maybe one if any(thinkin I didn’t see all the old comments). If Doom play OLB (my thinking is because he is not that good at DE on run defense and OLB in a 3-4 would be better)then put Boss on the otherside. Andre is the one of the starting inside LBs. Thats why they brought him in for. Draft Jackson(good pick) then another inside Lb?(not a good pick)Put D.j. at the other inside LB And get a 3-4 NT! I think sometimes people just be posting just to post! lol Man

  36. cutler6101 says:

I love going into a game and everyone saying we don’t have a chance…I am looking forward to playing the giants and ne….b/c I think we got them….this is a new team and they will strive to win and put themselves as far as possible away from looking like last years team. we are running on all cylinders and I believe that change is good and that we needed a change. change is here and i am going to try and embrace it…..so excited

  37. cutler6101 says:

dj is recovering from a shoulder injury if I am correct…but no he hasn’t been cut

  38. 07elway says:

cutler6101 – I was in no way trying to blast you for goodness sakes man. You just worded your comment in a way it sounded like you were putting all the blame on Cutler. But everyone’s tyring to make him look like the bad guy… he has mistakes like every other QB in the world and he gets and got all the criticism. He’s young, he’s different than the other QBs, he had a different start to his career than all the others, OF COURSE he’s got things to improve on… so do the Manning bros even Brady, they’re not perfect. They don’t do EVERYTHING right.

And he does have a strong arm, better than Elway – not so sure about that one – but a strong arm uh yeah. That’s one of his strengths, it does need to be controlled, which is what you’re trying to say – ball control. He overused his strength which made him look sloppy at times but my word, someone needed to stick with him and help him in his weaknesses. And I never said you said he was a bad QB.

    With faith…
    GO BRONCOS in ’09!!!!

  39. George Bush says:

Seems like some fans still cannot stop talking about the Bear’s QB.

When are you going to put a lid on it? Nobody will know what would have happened if he stayed because he left to join his boyhood heroes. Let’s put it this way, and be fair, if I were playing QB for the Patriots and McDaniels wanted to sign me I would be in Denver whilst we were still on the phone and would have taken a pay cut to get here.

    Enough said.

As for the schedule, when the going gets tough the tough get going, and as far as I am concerned until we lose a game we are aiming for 16 zip.

  40. dwillwilliams27 says:

I like the team as of right now, before the draft. I say we will def be 10-6 and if we get good players in the draft we can def be better. Dont forget Kyle Orton has a winning record, we cant say that about Cutler. Still think Cutler is God, but saying Orton is def a good QB.

    Denver Broncos in 09 – Wild Card with a 10-6 Record *

  41. terbronco07 says:

I see them finishing at the bottom of the division, Not only did Bowlen and Mcfailure rip the offense apart, the powers that be that decides the schedule are dishing out there own justice for what those idiots have done to this franchise!

  42. terbronco07 says:

So I say 6-10 at best! And that’s even pushing it!

  43. babychamp-broncos^ says:

terbronco07 and the rest of the doubters why dont u jus become a bears fan or whatever and stop downing talking the broncos…when they get on a roll dont try n hop on it cuz u right along with the rest of these doubters…get over cutler and to the rest of u that think he was all that cuz he wasnt if that was the case he would still be here bottom line…as much as u wishin he was bacc here n wastin yo time thinkin bout him he dont give a bleep wuts goin on in denver or about us fans so focus on the team we have now and support them thru the thicc n thin and bleed orange and blue like real fans…..to the ones thats sticcin with the team i respect all of u and look forward to this rollercoaster season we about to ride and future conversations cuz im pretty sure this season will be full of excitment and surprises

  44. monodono says:

    It’s a tough schedule

  45. Werzdabeer says:

Wow, what is in the water?? A bit too much optimism. The difference between 4 and 6 wins this year will be who they draft. Denver is going to be hard pressed to find a vicotry in October and November. If something isn’t done to shore up this defense 2009 will be something like 1999. The only highlight for that year was we drafted Big Al. The rest is pretty forgetable.

  46. cutler6101 says:

I only said we could win without cutler and everyone breaks down and ppl get touchy about stuff to easily. he used to play for us so yeah his name will be mentioned sometimes….he just left the team and we have a qb battle going on and I mentioned his name and if I mention it again then oh well

We shouldn’t be scared of a tough schedule come on this is still a talented team and it will not be the same defense saying 6-10 is disrespecting the stars we have on our team….we will not bow down to a team because they were tough last season…..ANY GIVEN SUNDAY

  47. BradJamesBroncoFan says:

Jay Cutler’s with his boyhood heroes now. Awesome! First of all, I think players such as Walter Payton and Mike Singletary were great but the Broncos franchise is better since the merger and otherwise. The Bears may be successful, but we’ll be more successful. In terms of Super Bowl championships: Broncos 2 Bears 1, and the Bears beat the Pats before they knew how to cheat well enough. So, let Cutler have fun throwing swing passes to Matt Forte all day. We’ll be dominating with Orton as our triggerman. GO BRONCOS!!!

  48. cruiz82 says:

Well, i love the Broncos but to be honest i think its the toughest schedule in years…with Cutler leaving the 3rd best offense we need a good quarterback, ex. Mark Sanchez if available and well if we can pick up either Cushing or even better Malaluga from USC to help DJ Williams we have a shot at 10-6 yet with out a better offense or a good QB it’ll be hard to get a winning record but as a true Denver fan i don’t think or even hope for a losing season

  49. bigmandan says:

I think they will win about 9 to 11 games. Now I know most of you now think I have lost my marbles, but hear me out.

The number one reason I think that this will happen is the O-line. They were the best in football last year protecting the passer, they had to adjust to seven different RBs and had a pretty good year run blocking. This was with many new starters on the line. They will only get better. That make the run game and pass game better.

But the Offense wasn’t really the problem, was it? No, but They should be slightly more efficient, even without Cutler and potentially marshall than they were last year.

The defense will be the othe big difference. It has been several years since Denver had a pass rush. It is not that the overall D was so bad, just that opposing QBs had a TON of time to find a receiver and runners had open lanes. If the front seven get revamped the way I think they will, then the Defense will be the difference in 2 to 4 games for them.

So heres how I think it goes…

Weeks one through three…three wins, though week two vs. Cleveland might be interesting. Cincy and Oakland are still way off.

    Record Now 3-0

Weeks four through six…now is when the tough middle 8 games begins. They will lose some of these. I think the Cowboys are in for a free fall this year…and the Patriots have lost a lot of weapons, including McDaniels. Plus they are both in Denver. I give the edge to Denver in both. Week six in San Diego…well, they might lose that one. Any way it works, they will lose one or maybe two of these three.

    Record Now 5-1

    Weeks 8 through 12
Some tough games here. Now is where their record starts to drop. At the Ravens…even though Baltimore has lost weapons, I think the D is too much for Denver. Close loss, like 3-5 points there. Hosting the Steelers on National TV…It will be a good game, but even though they are at home, Denver loses in another close one. At the Redskins…I think they win this one. And then the Chargers and Giants at home…I think they win one of these…maybe both. We’ll say one.

    Record Now 7-4

    Weeks 13 through 17
Poised to fall apart as they did last season, I think the new attitude wins out in this part of the season. They will beat KC twice, even though it is always tough at Arrowhead. They will beat the Raiders at home. They will lose one or both of the other two games, at Indy and at Philly. Philly has lost a lot of talent, but it is a tough place to play. Indy is, well, Indy.

    Record Now 11-5

Considering the tossup games, I think anywhere from 9 to 12 wins, and a playoff berth. But I am just guessing.

It seems tough but it can be managed
