Tough Ending in K.C.

January 5th, 2010 - 12:40am by mark_cooper

This may be the toughest post I’ve made all season because I was a little upset with what I read in the papers today. Remember what you were told in school? If you’re upset, wait before you say something (write something) that might get you in trouble. Well that’s what I did. I waited and now it’s almost midnight and I couldn’t wait any longer.

Here goes. Woody Paige wrote an article today that said the Broncos quit. It said QUIT. Are you kidding me???

Sorry Woody and everyone that bought that garbage, professional athletes and coaches don’t quit. QUIT is a 4 letter word that ISN’T, NEVER WAS, or NEVER WILL BE in the vocabulary of a professional athlete or coach. Sports writers use it because they either haven’t ever played or never played at a high enough level to know there is no such word or action when you reach the NFL.

They use it because they don’t know better and are trying to sell newspapers and get a reaction from the readers (it worked) here.

This team did better than anyone gave them credit for at the beginning of the season and yet disappointed us more at the end because of a 6-0 start that got all our hopes up and then the season came crashing down. I personally enjoyed this season more than many in the past few years because I really got excited about the future and what we have to build on. Just look at the other 8-8 teams around the league….pretty good crew of folks that didn’t make the playoffs too. Many beat better teams throughout the year but just couldn’t keep it together for a multitude of reasons.

Seasons over, more controversy with Brandon and now Scheffler and I still haven’t heard the whole story so I reserve comment until more comes out in the coming weeks. Are they trying to be traded? I don’t know. They both want to catch more balls and seem to want to be in a more vertical offense. Can’t say I blame them on a personal level other than disrupting the rest of the team for personal gain. Not something any of the real pros of the day I know would have done.

I’ve always been a team guy. I did what the team asked, I played guard and tackle and which ever side I needed to play and moved from one side to the other during game…why…to win as a team. I played hurt, shot up whatever was needed to win. Call me stupid, maybe, but I wanted to win regardless of the cost to me personally. I had all offseason to heal and the rest of my life worry about it. But not gameday.

Different era, different mindset. You can have your opinion but there’s only one head coach, president of any company, owner or operator and they have the final say, pure and simple….just like out here in the real world. Agree to disagree and play to win.

The game. Like we’ve discussed before…sometimes you don’t need to look at the stats. Sometimes in the NFL, you wish you could have a mulligan and a do-over because it just wasn’t your day. Tough day, enough said, because I know you all will say it for me.

Tough year, new team, new coaches, new players, new system….I’m still excited by what I saw that we have to build on. Call me a HOMER…..I like what we have going forward, with or without Brandon or Scheffler who ever makes the next fuss.

Teams win, individuals at the end of their career wish they had a chance at a ring and Super Bowl.

QUIT?…really…don’t know, recognize, relate or acknowledge the word.

GO BRONCOS!!!!!!!!!

I look forward to your comments and the offseason. I’m sure I won’t catch as much heat as I did last offseason…but you never know…keeps things interesting doesn’t it? :o )

The blog doesn’t stop here. I’ll have more to say and discuss as we watch the Playoffs together.

Coop..yea i agree with u that QUIT is not in a professional athletes vocabulary. But,you do gotta wonder what the heck happened after such a great start at the beginning of the season.I will always bleed orange and blue, but i will admit this is the worst i’ve felt after the season in a long time.Oh well…looking to the future…..

  2. broncos20 says:

Hei Coop! its been great reading your posts throughout the season..though a sad ending, it just proved where the Broncos are at right now as a team, a proven winning team! Woody is an annoying person..he keeps writing stupid quotes on his show.

  3. broncos20 says:

well, looks like will be paying to the draft talent a little earlier than i hoped we would this season.

Our defense has slumped a bit during the last stretch letting the sorry raiders and the awful chiefs score all over us. I like this new 3-4 attacking defense, but werent 3-4 defenses base is to limit the running game? It seems we will need bigger D-linemen (not to take anything from Peterson or Holliday) they had sacks but most of them were coverage sacks. Fields had his moments, but we still need help with the line.

Sign bigger O-linemen and draft defense..(or keep in mind, Peppers could hit the market this offseason, He is still a Beast!).IMO…Suh will make an excellent DE in a 3-4…but i would I’d take up Taylor Mays..need our DBs to get younger. We have the best DB veterans in the game, let em’ teach the new group.(love the Goodman and Bailey tandem)..i wouldnt be surprised if coach tries to pick up Seymour if he hits the FA block…

Nice blog Coop! Yeah a tough season on all of Bronco Country.

I’m not too happy with missing the playoffs, but I’ll get over it. The thing that concerns me the most is how we lost to divisional opponents in our own backyard. When teams come to Invesco Field at Mile High they should be scared. At the old Mile High that thing shook to the point I thought it could fall down. It was so loud, not the loudest but one of the loudest. Not it seems like they just waltz in and waltz out with a blowout win, sickening really.

I hope McD and Co. have a great plan this offseason. There is so much that needs to be addressed and I hope he doesn’t leave anything out. I wasn’t too happy with some of the draft picks last year, but I just have to keep telling myself this is a marathon not a sprint. You have to put the pieces into place and develope them.

  5. nw3030 says:

Hey coop, good stuff man! you always did have the heart of a lion.

Yeah it was a tough season. but for one i am really encouraged by this team. we really are not that far off from being the real deal. i honestly can say with all my heart that i think is the last time you will see this team falter at the end of the season. they will only get better. heres to a great and exciting offseason! GO BRONCOS!

  6. eeerockski says:

Great post. And even though I’m bummed we got wooped and missed the playoffs, the fact remains that the team won more games than I thought they would. They surprised just about everyone with their red-hot start, then fizzled out and looked pretty mediocre from then on. But as a whole, I’d say this season was a success because of the fact that they won more games than most people thought they would. Now, if we could just figure out how to finish a season strongly, we’d be ok. And with the Marshall issue re-emurging, I trust this teams staff to make the right decision. I’d love to see him signed to a long term deal with us, but not if he’s gonna continuously screw up. I’m no Jesus, but then again, I’m not in the spotlight either.

  7. nw3030 says:

Trust me i think the broncs will be much better off by trading marsh for some picks. we really could explode next year with a few good FA signings and a couple more solid rooks

  8. Orange_Crusher says:

I think Pat Bowlen shold buy the Denver Post and put Wodie Paige out of a JOB….haha

  9. baylinorcrush says:

Morning, Coop, I had been wondering about you, not reading your post, glad to see everything is ok. Tough ending to a wild season no doubt. Woody has had a very tough year this year with his emotions, he has been all over the gamut, making flip-flop after flip-flop, depending on how the season went, to the point that about a month ago I just finally addressed a post to him saying he had completely lost it this year, and even so I have read him since he started at the DP, I would no longer do so. That’s how bad it got with him. He is still a great writer, but age is catching up with him, and I am not so sure he differentiates thing as well as he used to, it’s becoming a bit of mayhem in his head, IMO. Well, he knows better than us what sells, as you refered to, and he can still be funny, so that’s that.

Him saying the team quit is the kind of irresponsible general statement that no one should fall into when you are takling about 53 different guys. I do think the locker room grew some type of division since the mid season point and it probably got exarcebated with the recent events, so in that light I do believe part of the team, a SMALL part, had somewhere lost the playing as a team concept along the way and got more interested in their private business if you wish, hence McD stepped his foot down, unluckly he aired the laundry in front of the press and it snow balled into an ugly ending. I have already voiced my opinions so much about all that on this website, I won’t rehash any of it now. I will say this, because of how we got to where we are at I believe that it is imperative that we let the malcontents walk out of Dove Valley and into greener pasture, so they think, if we are going to keep going in the team concept direction and do so with a united locker room.

Some guys like Marshall are just not built for the team concept, it is foreign to them, he and Cutler never played on big college programs where winning is everything, Marshall at Central Florida, Cutler at Vanderbilt, with all due respect these organization aren’t exactly on top of the football world, so they had to make a name for themselves, not through their team, but on their own, and that stuff is still carrying on through the NFL right now for both of them. End result that’s why they are were they’re at with the Broncos, or without. After the weeding is done, we will be able to get back to work, and find ourselves with a united locker room again. More than anything, I believe that will be a major piece of the puzzle to our success for next year, this off-season, may prove to be critical for McD, he needs to step up his leadership and unite the troops, just not the way he did it last week. He knows himself he blew it when he took it to the press when he said some things should be done internally, we all know what he meant. But, he is a rookie coach, younger than a fourth of his players, or just about, and he is bound to do stupid things as he learns along. If he can learn the art of becoming a leader, couple that with his knowledge of the x and o’s, he will be a force to be reckoned with for years to come.

In closing, I am not sad at all we didn’t make the playoffs, just like last year, rather relieved that they saved me the embarassment that was sure to follow in the playoffs. This is going to be as exciting an off-season as the regular season was, IMO.

  10. Ro Daddy 56 says:

Hey Coop! This is my first time posting on ANY blog but I agree with you 100%. I’ve never played football beyond high school but I do know that in order to reach football at its highest level, you have got to push yourself beyond the level of quit aka fatigue or whatever you want to call it.

I personally like Woody Paige but I have to whole-heartedly disagree with him on this front. THE BRONCOS DIDN’T QUIT. POINT BLANK PERIOD. True enogh, things didn’t go as well hoped they would, but look at the big picture my fellow Broncomaniacs, there were a lot of people(myself included) who didn’t think the Broncos would win more than 6 games this year, and I’m a hardcore fan! But the thing we have to remember is this is a team that brought in a new Head Coach, new Defensive Coordinator, new offensive system, new defensive system and a multitude of new assistant coaches so with all this change, there was bound to be some growing pains and bumps in the road. But if you look at all the things McDaniels and the Broncos were able to accomplish this year, I guarantee they all outweigh what they didn’t get accomplished with all the circumstances involved.

The majority of these sports reporters and writers have never played organized sports on any level so they say things to sell papers, get viewers or to get as many viewers possible to visit their web pages, take what they say with a grain of salt. Sorry to be so long winded but I am tired of people doggin OUR team and OUR coach! I am excited about the new culture of the Denver Broncos organization and I can’t wait til next season!

    BRONCOS 4 LIFE!!!!

  11. blkhillsbronco says:

it all starts in the trenches..we need to win the line of scrimmage on both sides of the ball. that’s were we have to first improve upon (draft and free agency)

  12. nw3030 says:

Bay great comments on why marsh and cutler are the way they are. i never thought of it that way. McD does have to find his niche with the leadership thing. I think he makes some major strides this year

  13. nw3030 says:

    Ro Daddy 56,
Im with you man. i am new to writing blogs to. i used to just read them and let it role off my back. but i couldnt stand back any longer. i wanted to express my faith in the organization and coach also glad to see im not the only newbie

I don’t know, is he 56? Either way, Meck, Coop and I are probably all in the same neck of the woods age wise, big difference is they are Denver Broncos, I am just an idiot fan of theirs. LOL.

  22. florio's_mom says:

That is next years schedule. 6 games against play off teams.

  23. killerkod says:

I think something else McD really needs to address was his own play calling. It got so boring and predictable after the first 6 games, every D coordinator in the league knew what was coming and how to stop it. I know you can’t huck it down the field deep all the time, but at least show teams you can at different points of the game. And I swear I can count on one hand how many play action passes I watched this year. A great O needs all of these in the bag of tricks to keep D’s off-guard and unsure of what we’re gonna run. Instead, they teed off on the run up the middle or the short screen dump off. YAWN!

  24. 07elway says:

Been a VERY long time since I’ve been on here but I just wanted to stop by and say hi to the Coopster.

Coop, you said it all. Quitting is never an option; it shouldn’t even be a word. The season ended badly but you have to give the Broncos credit for one thing… it was, as usual, completely unpredictable and one crazy rollercoaster. I have total faith in McD to get this team & all who are willing to become something better than 8-8. They have 7 months to take a break & come back refreshed and stay focused.

    Keep the faith Bronco Country!!

  25. eternalorangeandblue says:

Marshall and Scheffler are clearly me before the team players. Marshall only played as well as he did because he wanted to show other teams he can still play at a high level, even during a contract dispute, which gives him better trade value. I say we trade him to get better draft picks

  26. papacy808 says:

Bottom line we didn’t and couldn’t run the stinking ball… Lets go after Tebow

  27. papacy808 says:

Not comparing but I remember a young kid from Stanford wo could run and pass…

  28. Ohio says:

Embarassing! Flat out………from a 6-0 start to a 2-8 finish? Are you kidding me? Same outcome for us the last 2 years…….start hot and then fizzle………please, come on, figure it out! I’m still upset from the 2005 AFC Championship game loss to the Steelers…….that team is the one that started this whole “it’s not that scary to play the Broncos in Denver”. The Steelers came in and punched us in the mouth kind of like they did this year and just like the Chiefs did and the Raiders and let’s not forget the Jags from a few years ago and the Chargers this year……..ugh I could keep going but if you want to make the playoffs and or win your division you have to be tough at home, going 8-0 would be nice or how about 7-1! Where has the home field advantage gone. I’m sick to my stomach with how we finished……I don’t want to type anymore. Go Broncos

  29. baylinorcrush says:

Ohio, I hear you loud and clear, however I don’t know what game you are refering to when you mention Jacksonville, but if it’s the one we lost at home in the wild card, one of our worse loss all time, IT WAS IN 1996, so I have no idea how it reinforces your point in your post, we won two superbowls after that game. Just saying.

  30. beefdirkus says:

    Ohio,
I am totally with you. The biggest disappointment to me the last few years is not taking care of home games. Mile High used to be one of the toughest places to play. Teams feared coming to Denver as they knew it was going to be a loss. Now we are getting worked over at home. I heard a stat that this was the first year EVER that the Broncos lost to all 3 division opponites at home.
Like you said – if the Broncos were to control home field- that is 7-8 wins right there.
Broncos need to get the home field advantage back.

  31. baylinorcrush says:

The problem lays with the corporate wine sippers, the only ones who can afford to go to games anymore….. Long gone are the scary South stands, filled with rowdy run of the mill hard working folks. Progress, they call it….

  32. baylinorcrush says:

I guess it all starts with paying over inflated contracts to NFL players. Be careful what you wish for, the guys who keep coming on here and say “give Marshall the big contract he deserves” are probably the same ones who miss the old home field advantage when rowdy folks could afford it. I guess we are finding out it’s hard to have it both ways.

  33. baylinorcrush says:

    That was deep. LOL.

  34. brian_schneider says:

I think one of the biggest reasons why the stands aren’t what they used to be….John Elway. Nothing against any of the former Bronco greats but you had to stay in your seat until the clock hit 00:00. Not it seems like if we get down by 10 or 14 points people are leaving the stands early. Just my opinion.

  35. baylinorcrush says:

    The cardiac kid.

  36. brian_schneider says:

Yes they are expensive. I guess when you’re not selling out you have to raise prices to make the same amount of money that you would by selling out lower priced tickets.

  37. TheRoyalBeast says:

Dunno what happened after bye week…but it is wha tit is…we started hot in 08 too and fizzled out….sad to say but im geting used to it…was soooooooooo over this season by the time the game was over

QUIT in KC….No far from it. Made costly mistakes yes!!…Quit? NO!….Orton was hussling that offense…Moreno was doing all he could to get more yards and get out of bounds and on the last play he coulda gone further but was tryign to preserve time and was very mad and dissapointed when the time had run out. Defense…Maybe but i doubt it cuz there are alot of vets there that know how to treasure every game like its their last adn play till the whistle. Ortons 1st INT stupid. 2nd INT, even i didnt see the guy, 3rd INT was basically a hail mary. The INTs essentially lost teh game for us cuz they turned to points but the defense didnt exactly slow down the chiefs.

Funny thing is….first 6 games…our defense was stingy…and we played some good running teams, Bengals, yes the raiders, cowboys, chargers, and held our ground….we just fell off. Our defense being stingy was why we were winning cuz our offense was suspect since day one….once the defense couldnt limit the opponents points anymore…we started to fall….

As far as Marshall…I want him here forever and think trading him will be a mistake…but if hee gets traded…it is what it is…the sun will rise and set the next day and all the days after that. I don’t control this team and they will do what they please. Just think it will be a BIG mistake. As a coach, you dont run and give up on clashes with your team members. Belichek made it work with Moss. ARI with Bolden. ETC…and this is just talkign about WR not other star players that coaches learn to work with. And i dont think he puts himself above team. He fought for this team. And like he said “its 1st and 10, even if i get 15 yards…im still fighting for 16+”. MRI said it showed nothing but he said he has to trust how it feels and it felt bad. Last year MRI said nothing was worng with his hip and it ended up being a tear in his hip….You learn from history…..

If anyone puts himself above the team, i think its McD. With his stubburn/arrogant ways. For example….I think we passed all game agaisnt the Chiefs just so he could prove to Marshall that we can have a passing offense without him. But at the end of the day, we lost, and we were passing against the chiefs. Also there was no reason our strategy shouldnt have been run first and control TOP. He should be held “accountable” for that dumb game plan…IMHO!

  38. stevecan2 says:

I haven’t pulled up the exact numbers however food for thought. The Raiders have the best record playing in Denver. I finally had the nerve to watch the entire McD post season press conference. Most of the way through I had the impression that we are going to face more of the same. However as the conference went on, what I saw was McD breaking away from talking points (finally) and starting showing signs of what actually went wrong. Trying to psychoanalyze 20 to 30 something year old, with an over inflated ego, spoiled, brat ass, punks the likes of BMarsh would try even the best of coaches. McD assumed very incorrectly that you can step in from day one and think you are going to demand the respect that he would need to handle his players in the manner he did. He knows it and is ready to move on, will certain players be able to do the same? No they won’t. So cut ties with the babies and let the real men set the tone of this team. Bring in the players that are hungry, eager and willing to win. I do not believe anyone can honestly say that BMarsh ever gave an ounce of iota about his team mates. He is a cancer that can spread on someone else’s team. Similar to a previous post about mine concerning the Cutler era of our team, without an ounce of respect or loyalty that is certainly undue to a group of never has beens like Cutler, BMarsh, and Scheffler. There are probably more, but those three obviously the ones that could not get over what they haven’t even achieved before, a winning freaking season.

In summary, Coop I really and truly wish that my generation would stop and look at yours and realize what this game is truly about. Fast, agile, and smart are must haves, but even when you are all three, you are going to get dirty, play hurt, come back after getting thrown in the mud, etc. Now its all about numbers for dollar’s, when the only number that matters is the W. If these players of my generation would just look at those who are hailed as the greatest, they are the ones who win. PERIOD
Case in point, Joe Montana, Dan Marino… Compare the numbers, Marino crushed Joe Montana in almost every single statistic known, but who is better regarded, the one who had it in them to win.

  39. 1golfdoc says:

    my take on the season;
1- get rid of marshall, hope we can get something in return for him.
2- time to let simms go.
3- sign dumervil to long term deal. the guy can rush a qb.
4- open up the offense. if the personnel isn’t right, make the moves necessary.
5- hope mcd learned and will apply the lessons learned; better play calling, better drafting, & better management skills with players and media.

let’s hope for better days, GO BRONCOS!

  40. baylinorcrush says:

Guys, I have a funny stat for you, well, maybe not so funny.

On a day when KC put up 317 yards on the ground against us Sunday, the entire D line, Fields, Peterson, McBean, Holliday and Thomas accounted for a combined grand total of 4 tackles and 1 assist!

I thought we all needed a good laugh. LOL. I was just killing time, reading the game stat sheet and saw that, unreal.

  41. baylinorcrush says:

Anyone still think we need skill players in the draft? LOL.

  42. royalbroncofan1 says:

It’s official Shanahan is the new Head Coach of the Redskins.

  43. BDawk20 says:

I’ll try to make this short and sweet as much as possible. Listen, after the season of 2006 where Mike Shannan replaced Jake Plummer with Jay Cutler I told my family and friends(Rabid Chief fans family is, friends all sorts of fans) that we are going to witness a Jake Plummer curse. I mean really look at it, 2006 we go into a game against the below average 49ers and lose in overtime. The next season, Jay Culter hype baby, his first starting season, whoopie? 7-9, as I recall I member several games in which we should have won, but the monkey of the Plummer curse lives on, hence the football in the jaguars game in there redzone which led to a loss, I cant remember the halfback but I believe it was Tatum Bell or Ron Dayne I dont know doesnt matter. Then the famous playaction fake to Gren Jennings from Brett Farve….COMON! How could this possibly get worse. Oh but it does, the Chicago game, man I remember being so pumped after being up 34-20 with like around 7 minutes to go, but Devin Hester the beast he was then killed us. Two overtime tosses couldnt go our way because of the Plummer curse I seriously believe this guys. Then here comes the 2008 season, man we were litterally the Pink Crush Defense let me tell ya, 8-5 things are looking good we got a 3 game lead with 3 to play. Chargers lose one game and were on to postseason or we win one and then we are in the postseason. We lose to panthers, which I didnt think we would win, with the defense we had. Then the Buffalo game, before this, Chargers played the Chiefs, chiefs dominated the chargers throughout this game, The Chargers score a late touchdown in the 4th qtr and have to go for the on side kick to save there playoff hopes. The best arguable hands on the Chiefs Roster bobbles the ball and doesnt end up with it (Dwayne Bowe). You all know the rest, then Jay Cutler blows the Buffalo game by missing a wide open Brandon Clutch Hands Stokely to possibly win the game. (2008 season ends with a SD beat down). We fire Mike Shannahan, fire some coaching staff, trade Jay Cutler. Make a massive player rebuffing, with the hiring of McD, Yes hes a good coach, yes hes brought in good assistants, yes Kyle Orton and Bdawk and the new defensive 3-4 scheme worked well versus past seasons. We go 6-0! I never got excited one bit, believe it or not, im use to fast starts with collapses to either wild card colt BEAT DOWNS, or season failure to fast offseason. We lose the next 4 games, Kyle Orton hurts ankle(Plummer Curse) We beat the giants , very impressive win. Then I get to go to KC and watch the KC Beat down, loved every bit of it. Then we go to the colts, why watch this game, were Peyton Mannings B8ch I mean cmon, im 20 years old and havent seen Manning lose to us yet, inless Jim Sorgi comes in. Were 8-5, favorable schedule down the stretch, WHAT DO YOU KNOW, we cant get two yards to put away the raiders which I was screaming for 4 straight run plays, if we dont get it, Russell has to go 98 yards to take the LEAD, I dont see it happening, but we kick a field goal. Russell comes in a looks like Tom Brady(Plummer Curse) We lose, then we go to philly and it looked early that we were going to get killed, I was positive though just like some other bloggers, on here. We stormed back(Not suprised, I even called the let of Matt Prater kickoff kick to let them run it back and cause fumble oh ya baby, said it to my Raven fan friend to…) Then when the score was 27-27, the Plummer curse came into play….we end of losing after Jeremy Maclin looks like Marvin Harrison in his prime on the sidelines.) We lose the game…..Week 17 I had high hopes and new we would get some help as long as we did our job. I watched pitt game and houston game on two tvs. Gary Kubiak does his job and Pittsburgh almost lost there game ugh, but we had hope going in to the Kc game, all we had to do is win and Jets or Ravens lose. Things were looking really good, Game is very competetive down the strech late in the 3rd Qtr, I just new we would win this, then CHARLIE FRYE GETS HURT! NOT TO MENTION HENNE GOT HURT, Plummer curse all over it, I believe ravens would of loss if Russell didnt go into the game, my opinion. Ravens win, Broncos get killed, and Jets killed Bengals. Go figure, wonder what Plummers doing? Probably laughing his butt off…I would be. (Anyways I do believe the monkey will be lifted or the curse, next year, 13-3 Postseason 2 seed and we go to AFC Championship game against the Chargers.) Definately not picking that game least, yet….Go Jets in the playoffs!!!

BDawk20, thanks for unknowingly answering my question to Ohio about what Jacksonville loss at home he was refering to, probably same one you talked about in Cutler’s 1st year, obviously too recent for me, completely forgot about it. LOL.

    BDawk20,

    That is one huge paragraph….WOW

Plummer was the only QB to get us to the AFC champoinship in a ten year span.

the 2009 denver broncos never quit, we’re they out played? yeah, i think most teams get out played every now and again and some more than others through the course of a season. i can’t say that the players now a day “coop” have the same level of loyalty that you had when you played and I can’t say that today’s players have the heart that most of the former players of the nfl had, but I know that they didn’t get where they are now quitting, they didnt’ achieve what they’ve achieved with a quitters mentallity…our boys played hard, they lost some tough ones, and won some good ones, they showed signs of growth and showed obvious weaknesses that need to be strengthened. the thing now is bringing back a team that wants to win together and make this thing happen. anyone and I mean “ANYONE” that doesn’t share that same attitude need not return. this is football, someone will step up and beam for a chance to be the next bronco great…

It was 2007, Cutler’s second year, 3rd game of the season, Jacksonville at Denver, 23-14.
